Debbie tells Chas that Zak has taken her mobile away. She begs her to cover for her while she sneaks off and uses the phone box. Chas refuses to help her.

Jimmy is alarmed when Sadie shows him the pictures of Charity and Cain kissing and he insists that there must be an innocent explanation. Jimmy sets off to get the truth from Cain but when Zak tells him that he has gone away,

Sadie helps Charity get ready for her big day. Charity is touched when Sadie lets her have a diamond bracelet to wear for the wedding as ‘something borrowed’. Sadie heads over to Holdgate Farm and engineering time alone with Tom and Jimmy drops her bombshell.

Still dressed in her wedding dress, Charity wakes up on the Dingle sofa. Meanwhile, at Home Farm, Sadie celebrates her enemy's downfall and tells Jimmy that she feels like a buck's fizz. Jimmy is appalled and Sadie tells him that she's celebrating because Charity has been stopped just as she was on the verge of taking over their family.

Edna is persistent in rallying the locals to sign a petition stating that Councillor Eric is unfit to hold public office. Val is defensive towards Eric and encourages Louise to say something when Edna comes in the pub looking for signatures.

Jimmy continues to fret about Tom’s absence. He wonders whether Tom might be trying to track down Cain. Sadie looks alarmed but pores scorn on the idea. Jimmy frightens himself and Sadie when he suggests that Charity may have down away with Tom as an act of revenge. Later, he accosts Charity in the village and demands to know what she's done with Tom.

The police inform Alan that a woman's body has been found on the moors. Alan is distraught at the thought that they may have found Shelley’s body. Meanwhile, Ethan reluctantly goes to visit Steph in prison.

Ashley and Ethan argue about Ethan's treatment of Alan the previous evening. Ashley tells him that he was out of order when he suggested to Alan that Steph might not have killed Shelley. With puffed cheeks and arms waving, Ashley tells the curate to go and apologise to him.

Andy is delighted when Libby invites him to go for a drink to discuss renting the stables and they head to The Woolpack together. Meanwhile, Debbie comes out of the pub toilets having done another two tests confirming that she is pregnant and is clearly upset to see Andy having a drink with another girl.

Sam is depressed about Alice’s pending departure and as a cry for help he climbs up onto the roof of the village hall. Sam insists he wants to injure himself in the hope that it will encourage Alice to stay and look after him.

Alan is shocked when he receives a call from the producer of the daytime TV show This Morning inviting him onto the programme to talk about recent events. Alan refuses, as he doesn’t feel he is up to it, before heading off to visit Steph.

Alan appears on This Morning and makes an emotional plea to Shelley to get in touch if she is watching. Back at the village, the B&B telephone doesn’t stop ringing with journalists wanting to speak to Alan.

There is a showdown in The Woolpack between the Kings and the Dingles when Cain shows his face for the first time since Tom and Charity’s wedding.

Charity tries to appeal to Cain’s better nature by pleading that if she ever meant anything to him he should tell the truth. With Debbie present, Cain confidently assures Charity that everything has worked out for the best and affectionately goes to hug her.

Charity is delighted when she overhears Jimmy telling Matthew that he is sick of Sadie getting all of the credit at work. When he goes on to say that he would never have married her if he had known what she was like, Charity sees an opportunity and corners Jimmy telling him that they have a lot in common. Val decides to help raise funds for Eric and offers to sell his watches to Rodney. Thinking this is an impossibility, Eric jokes that if she does he will cook for her in the nude! Much to Eric's horror Val succeeds in making the sale and Eric is left with no choice but to get his kit off! Sam gets a shock when Alice asks him to move to Norfolk with her. Sam is torn between his feelings for Alice and the love of his family, but Zak is intent on keeping his son close.

Zak spends the day telling Sam how much he would miss out on if he left Emmerdale and reinforces the importance of being close to the family. With his father's words playing on his mind, Sam tells Alice that Zak needs him and the couple spend a romantic evening holding hands for the last time. As it gets late, Sam walks Alice to the bus stop and both are sorrowful as they say goodbye. Over at The Woolpack, Charity feels down as Debbie refuses to speak to her until she admits that she loves Cain. Luckily for Charity her spirits are lifted when a miserable Jimmy walks in and she instantly sets about forming alliances with him.

Zak notes Sam’s agony over Alice’s departure and after visiting Butch and Ben’s graves he returns in a new frame of mind, telling his son he must not miss his opportunity to be happy. They drive to the train station and Sam makes a dash for a train.

Jimmy attempts to build bridges with his wife and admits that it's been his fault that Tom has been pushing him out. Sadie tells him they all need to keep their heads low and not upset Tom. Sadie and Charity meet in the street and have a few words.

Jimmy’s off to play golf, but Sadie tells him they’re having lunch at Tom’s and that he should cancel his plans. He says he won’t, but then, as always, Sadie gets her way and he reluctantly says he'll go.

After a series of anonymous calls at the B&B, Ethan suggests to Alan that Shelley may be on the other end of the phone. When it rings again Alan listens carefully and thinks he can hear crying. He asks if it is Shelly but the call is cut off. Meanwhile, Steph lies on her bed deep in thought as she remembers the night that Shelley went missing. As her mind flashes back she opens her eyes in horror. Over at Dale View, Chloe continues to play happily families with Carl and she shocks him when she comes home with a pet dog. Carl is clearly not impressed but Chloe is unperturbed by his reaction. Chas warns Charity that if she wants to continue to manipulate Jimmy she’ll have to be quick because he's off to France with Sadie.

Chloe leaves The Woolpack in a state of panic after seeing Carl and Max flirting with Tamsin and Libby. When Carl eventually comes home, Chloe makes it clear that she is upset and as he tries to tell her that things aren’t working out Chloe breaks the news that she is pregnant. Alan informs DI Keysell about the phone call he received the previous day and the inspector warns him that it could be a hoax. Despite this, Alan can’t help but hope that Shelley is alive and he becomes increasingly convinced that she has been trying to get in touch. Meanwhile, Charity tells Jimmy that if he is looking for proof that Sadie has been speaking to Cain he only needs to check her phone bill.

Chloe emotionally blackmails Carl by telling him that the pregnancy is her problem and not his. Carl insists that he won’t turn his back on her and reluctantly agrees when she suggests a termination. Chloe later books an appointment with her GP and then tells Carl that her biggest fear is losing him. Meanwhile, Alan gets his hopes up when the mysterious calls to the B&B are traced back to Newquay. Knowing that Shelley has always been fond of the seaside town, Alan is convinced that she has been trying to get in touch. Elsewhere, Andy’s hopes of wooing Libby are dashed when she mentions that she has a boyfriend.

Ethan visits Steph in prison and is stunned when she tells him that the flashbacks in her mind have made her realise that she must have murdered Shelley. Steph asks the curate to tell Alan the truth and to let him know how sorry she is. She then calls her solicitor and insists that her plea is changed to guilty. Over at The Woolpack, Carl cancels his trip away with Max in order to spend time with Chloe. Chloe is smug that she finally has Carl just where she wants him. Jimmy‘s suspicions towards his wife intensify. After some rooting around he manages to find the number of the private investigator that she hired to photograph Cain and Charity. He arranges to meet him the following day.

DI Keysell interviews Steph about Shelley’s death but becomes frustrated when she insists that she can’t remember exactly how she killed her. Later that day, Steph calls her father to apologise for the hurt that she has caused. Alan hangs up in fury before breaking down in tears as the magnitude of the situation finally hits home. Jimmy meets the private investigator and is shocked to learn that Sadie held back pictures of Charity fighting Cain off after the kiss. Jimmy can’t believe his wife's behaviour and after seeing his anguish, Charity seductively assures him that Sadie will get her comeuppance. Over at The Woolpack, the open mic competition gets underway and Viv can’t resist mocking every joke that Bob makes. Viv's comments only add to the comedy value and the pair are voted joint winners, much to Viv's horror!

Ashley gets a surprise during his sermon when Laurel returns from her travels a day early. The vicar makes it clear how much he has missed his other half by wasting no time in asking for her hand in marriage. Ethan visits Steph at the remand centre and advises her to confess the whereabouts of Shelley’s body. Much to his horror, Steph explains that she wishes she could but she simply can’t remember what happened. Chloe enjoys Sunday lunch at the King's and takes the opportunity to get better acquainted with Tom. While Carl goes to the pub, Chloe insists on staying to help and subtly hints that she would like to marry his son.

Tom and Carl rush to Chloe’s aid when she falls down the stairs. Tom is left stunned when she lets slip that she is pregnant. Despite her protesting, Carl takes Chloe to the hospital but as she is about to have her scan she asks Carl to go and talk to Tom. Left alone, the doctor tells Chloe that she was never pregnant. However, she later lies to Carl that the baby is fine and that she can’t go through with the abortion. Elsewhere, Laurel is delighted when Diane offers her a home at The Woolpack and is thrilled when Nicola throws her a surprise welcome home party. Laurel's day improves even further when Nicola offers her a job and she is left overwhelmed by her perfect life in the village.

Chloe’s manipulation of Carl continues when she threatens to go and live with Siobhan so they can bring up their children together. Fearing that he will lose access to his baby, Carl assures Chloe that she has his full support and they later announce the pregnancy to a surprised Jimmy and Matthew. Elsewhere, Chas enjoys a night out with her policeman boyfriend, Denzel, but when Marlon and Shadrach spot them together she is forced to pretend that she has just been arrested!

The villagers attend a tearful memorial service in honour of Shelley and they all gather around as Alan reads a sonnet from one of her poetry books. Alan stays behind and talks aloud, telling Shelley how much he misses her. He gets the fright of his life when there is a tap on his shoulder and he turns around to see a surprise guest - Shelley! Over in The Woolpack, Chas offers Carl a listening ear as it is obvious that he is struggling to come to terms with his new situation. The chemistry between them is clear but they have little choice but to deny the feelings they have for one another. Meanwhile, Zak sets about finding out the identity of Chas’ new man and gets the wrong end of the stick when he sees her chatting to Rodney!

Alan is still in shock after Shelly’s surprise appearance, but at first he’s just glad to see her. Shelly tells him she had to go after seeing him on the television and seeing how much pain he was in. But what was initially joy turns to anger on Alan’s part as he can’t understand why she didn’t come forward sooner. He tells her about his sleepless nights, wondering where she was.

Shelly and Alan have been in the police station all night giving their statements. Much to Keysell’s annoyance, Shelly tells him she doesn’t want to press and charges on Steph. He tells her Steph will be released as a consequence, which obviously scares the poor woman. Betty and Viv are left shocked when Shelly and Alan step out of the taxi. Viv waits for Shelly to give an explanation, but she just apologises.

Charity is about to pay for her groceries in Viv’s shop, but noting Jimmy’s presence she pretends she has forgotten her purse and is pleased when he offers to lend her the money. Charity later goes to Home Farm to thank Jimmy, but her sexy attire suggests that she has got more than money on her mind.

Charity goes to visit Jimmy wearing a very revealing dress and instantly turns on the charm. Jimmy suspiciously asks her if she is leading him on but Charity insists that her only motive is to have some fun, as she leads him to the bedroom. Meanwhile, Ethan picks up Steph from prison but advises her to stay away from Emmerdale. Taking his words on board she agrees and heads off to a hostel in Leeds. Over in The Woolpack, Eric tries to drink away his misery as his impending trial looms heavily on his mind. When he starts to get lippy with the locals, Val steers him out of the pub and he repays her with a kiss when they arrive home.

Alan gets a shock when he finds Steph on his doorstep demanding to see Shelley. After he slams the door in his daughter's face, Steph heads to The Woolpack but is upset further by the reception that awaits her. With nowhere else to go, Steph heads to the church where Ethan questions her about why she has come back. Steph insists she loves Alan and Shelley and that she wants to tell them that she approves of their relationship. Meanwhile, Eric has a meeting with his solicitor and is devastated to hear that he could face a six-month sentence for the fraud at the factory.

Steph tries to live a normal existence in the village only to find a hostile reaction wherever she goes. Even Ashley is irritated by her presence, annoyed that Ethan didn’t consult him before inviting her to stay at the vicarage. Shelly goes out for a walk and is disturbed to come face to face with Steph. Having feared her for too long, Shelly pulls herself together and is strong as she approaches the woman who previously held her hostage. Over in The Woolpack, Jimmy flirtatiously asks Charity if there is going to be a repeat performance of the other night. Charity agrees and they arrange to meet the following day. Elsewhere, Pearl and Len discuss their future and finally agree that they don’t want to leave the village after all.

Charity goes to Home Farm to see Jimmy and she bides her time as she waits for a pre-arranged phone call from Chas. When Charity takes the call she apologises that she has to go and promises Jimmy that she’ll make it up to him. Charity heads to a hotel and makes a reservation for the following day. Elsewhere, Tom asks Paddy if he has any work for Max and is shocked to learn that his son has already turned down a part-time job at the vet's. Tom is determined that Max should earn himself a living in the village and tells Paddy that he is prepared to fund the job to make it a full-time position. Elsewhere, Steph bakes cakes and delivers them around the village in an attempt to make amends. Unfortunately for her the only person that shows an ounce of appreciation is Shadrach!

Max begins his job at the vets. Paddy introduces him to the new receptionist - Libby. Max is up for a kiss or two when he asks Libby out for a drink after work. Meanwhile, Eric is going to court for his trading standards case. Val is on tenterhooks waiting for Eric and she admits to Diane that she's not sure if he's coming back. Diane is surprised by Val's reaction, but her sister tells her that Eric is misunderstood. Eric waltzes into the pub a free man after Steph took all the blame in the handbag scandal and was given a conditional discharge.

Charity is triumphant, having got the evidence she needed on video tape. After making several copies she heads into the pub with one in her bag. Chas is shocked when her cousin asks her to look after the tape and demands that Charity tell her exactly what is going on.

It's the big day and Charity is wrapping her present for Jimmy and signing his card. Meanwhile, Glynis gives Eric a surprise call and asks him out to lunch.

Laurel excitedly tells her friends about the wedding but is later downhearted when Ethan reveals that he suspects the Bishop will disapprove of Ashley marring for a second time. Ashley tries to convince Laurel that everything will be fine. Meanwhile, Jimmy is raging with anger at being blackmailed and he takes out his aggression by trashing Charity’s room at the B&B in search of the video tape. Jimmy thinks he has won after smashing up all of her tapes and the camcorder, but a smug Charity is quick to tell him that she has a backup copy and that she has decided to up her price to £200,000. Elsewhere, Eric values a widow's antiques and is delighted to discover that he is likely to make a huge profit. The dodgy dealer is thrilled that things are finally looking up.

Jimmy gives Charity the first instalment of money but she is unimpressed not to receive the full amount. Jimmy insists he has cleared out his savings account but Charity is in no mood for excuses. Sadie returns from her travels, which only makes matters worse for Jimmy.

Ashley and Laurel receive devastating news when Bishop George informs them that he's decided he cannot allow them to marry. Ashley refuses to accept the situation and makes matters worse by flippantly suggesting that he believes Ethan was sent by the church to keep an eye on him. Meanwhile, Val and Eric are as thick as thieves as they excitedly realise that they are going to make a fortune from auctioning off the widow's goods. They show no remorse for deceiving the unsuspecting lady and the pair agree that they make a winning team. Elsewhere, Charity tries to splash her cash on Debbie in order to get her on side. Cain interrupts and is horrified when Charity announces that she plans to leave Emmerdale and take Debbie with her.

Ashley struggles to contain his fury following the argument the previous day and informs Bishop George that he has decided to resign from his post. The bishop urges him to reconsider his sacrifice but the hotheaded vicar goes home and tells Laurel that from now on it is just them and Gabby. Over at Home Farm, Sadie is outraged to discover that Jimmy has withdrawn the savings from their bank account. When she confronts her husband he quickly covers by explaining that he bet the money on a horse. Meanwhile, Eric cheers up Lisa who is upset that Zak hasn’t bought her a birthday present. Zak is angry when he later sees his wife with another man and Eric soon finds himself wiping birthday cake off his face!

Paddy looks on with jealousy at Marlon and Donna canoodling. After one too many drinks, he shocks Marlon by confessing that he and Emily are experiencing problems in the bedroom. Elsewhere, Viv tries to reunite her family and with the best of intentions she invites everyone over for lunch. When she fails to round up the troops, Viv is left feeling utterly depressed and she complains to an uncomfortable Emily about her own non-existent sex life. Meanwhile, Ashley remains adamant that he stands by his resignation from the church, but when a parishioner rings saying that his dying mother is asking to see him, the ex-vicar goes to visit her without a second thought.

Marlon suggests that Paddy tries to spice things up with Emily by cooking a romantic meal. Unfortunately for Paddy things don’t go to plan when a careless word from Dawn leads Emily to fear that her husband is having an affair. Meanwhile, a drunk and depressed Viv rings her nearest and dearest insisting that they come round to see how unhappy she is. Despite Viv's best efforts to be miserable, her guests can’t help but be amused and they have a really enjoyable evening! Elsewhere, Laurel is shocked when she receives a visit from Bishop George.

Laurel is making all manner of mistakes at work, much to the disgust of a furious Nicola. Laurel tells her that she's distracted so Nicola decides they must go to the pub to talk about whatever's bothering her. Laurel and Nicola are joined by Emily as the newly-engaged woman admits to her friends that Ashley has resigned. Nicola is appalled that Laurel still wants to marry a man who will be jobless and penniless. Meanwhile, Viv is drinking plenty of coffee after her depressed evening. But when sales rep Johnny Hupton comes round she sees that he may be able to offer her more than just some cans of beans.

Ashley is nervous as he breaks the news of his decision to Laurel and informs her that in order to convince Bishop George of their love for one another they will have to end the physical side of their relationship. Laurel assures the vicar that she is willing to wait forever if she has to, but later on she breaks down in tears as she removes her engagement ring. Meanwhile, Charity is desperate to make Debbie believe that she has been set up and tells Chas that she is considering showing her the videotape of her and Jimmy. Chas strongly advises her against this. Elsewhere, Jimmy worries that his days are numbered and he panics knowing that he doesn’t have the money that Charity is demanding. Out of desperation he slips Sadie’s jewellery into his pocket.

Ashley and Laurel get on with their lives after agreeing to wait for the Bishop’s approval before getting married. Ashley tells Zoe that he knows he’s done the right thing, but he feels ‘strangely deflated’. Laurel meanwhile is getting support from Emily, but negatives from Nicola, as expected. Later the downcast two bump into each other and Ashley checks that Laurel is still fine with their decision. Charity heads over to see Debbie again, but the pregnant teenager still wants nothing to do with her mother.

Debbie is upset following the revelations the previous day and she listens attentively as Ethan tries to help her understand the reason behind her mother's behaviour. Later that day, Debbie receives an apology from Charity and she begins to realise that maybe Cain has let her down. Charity is hopeful when Debbie hints that she would like a fresh start. Elsewhere, Jimmy is anxious to ensure that Sadie never sees the videotape and as Charity puts the pressure on him he resorts to stealing money from King & Son's office. Meanwhile, Steph makes a conscious effort to build bridges with Alan and Shelley. However, Shelley is not ready to forgive and forget and she slams to door in her rival's face.

Charity is beginning to pack her things at the B&B and tells Debbie that she's leaving the next day. The teenager tells her mum that she hasn’t made her mind up yet on whether she will go with her or not. The Dingles are preparing a leaving party for Charity and Shadrach and Zak go and get vital beer supplies at the shop. Shadrach emerges dressed in a shell-suit and having put toilet cleaner all over him instead of soap, intending to ask Viv out. As he walks in the shop Bob’s there having returned from his holiday.

Jimmy’s 40th birthday party becomes an unforgettable evening when Charity bursts in and blurts out that she and the birthday boy have been having an affair. When the Kings refuse to believe her allegations, she whips out the evidence and plays the incriminating videotape. Tom is stunned as the tape confirms that Sadie set Charity up to stop the wedding and a distraught Sadie launches herself at Charity.

Sadie and Jimmy are blaming each other for the situation they’re both in, but Jimmy reminds his wife that she was invited to join the family when she married him and ends up telling her that she's not a part of it now. Tom bumps into Cain in the village and confronts him from what he and Sadie did to Charity; telling him he knows exactly what the pair did to her and calls him a thug as he expresses his "broken heart" over her departure. Cain starts threating an unfazed Tom until Matthew rushes over to intervene and warn off Cain, who then leaves just as Matthew questions his father for squaring up to Charity's ex.

Despite his heartache, Tom is carrying on his life as normal and heads into work, much to the amazement of son Max who, he’d agree himself, would surely take several weeks off after what Tom's been through. But as his father tells him that life goes on. He certainly still has his head screwed on for when Sadie goes to see him at work he has already packed up her things, much to her amazement. Steph is trying her hardest to get an audience with Alan and Shelly and calls up Betty’s on a regular basis.

When Viv hears that Bob has a date, she is distraught and, seeking comfort, rings Emily. Emily is out but Paddy takes the call and goes round to console Viv. After two bottles of wine Viv becomes flirtatious and Paddy is torn between horror and lust as their eyes lock. However, when Viv misreads the signs and puts her hand on his knee, Paddy makes his excuses and leaves. Meanwhile, Sadie wonders how she can win Jimmy back and arrives at The Woolpack all glammed up. Jimmy ignores her and she feels humiliated as all eyes are on her. Sadie refuses a drink from Robert and leaves. Elsewhere, Eric is appalled by a newspaper headline regarding the local library and devises a money-making plan with Val as a result.

Paddy confides in Marlon about what happened with Viv and confesses that although he turned her down he was tempted. Marlon can’t help feeling amused but warns Paddy not to take it any further. Later that day, Emily thinks Viv needs cheering up and invites her round for supper. An awkward Viv and Paddy agree to forget about the previous night, but both are thinking of nothing else. Over in The Woolpack, Steph announces that she is sorry and Alan can’t help but feel a slight twang of sympathy. Shelley is furious when she walks in and sees Alan with Steph. Diane, noting her anger, suggests that Steph leaves. Elsewhere Eric and Val’s money-making plan continues. The evening paper prints a positive piece about Eric, and Val insists that Eric agree to a 35% share of the profits.

Emily asks Paddy to help Viv set up some tables in the café but he can’t face it and persuades Marlon to do it instead. Emily questions Paddy about his behaviour towards Viv but he assures her that nothing is wrong. Nicola is desperate to expand her business and when Eric employs her to clean the factory she offers Shelley a part-time job. Delighted that things are going so well, Nicola talks to Simon and tells him she wants to set a date for their wedding. Over in The Woolpack, Sadie is upset when Jimmy refuses to speak to her, making it clear that their marriage is over. Sadie tells Zoe that she refuses to leave the Kings behind and is prepared to play the waiting game.

Emily is convinced that Paddy and Viv have fallen out and are avoiding each other, so she tricks them into coming face to face. As Emily forces them to shake hands, the physical contact stirs feelings in both of them. Elsewhere, when Val fails to sell any paintings, Eric pretends they have gone up in flames in order to claim on the insurance. Meanwhile, Shelley struggles to take orders from a bossy Nicola and reconsiders working with her.

Val charms antique owners in an attempt to get offers for the paintings. Meanwhile, Eric is having trouble trying to get insurance cover for the pictures and is mortified to find out that Val has told the dealers he is her gofer. Elsewhere, Steph tries to win Shelley’s forgiveness by offering her beauty therapy equipment, but she is clearly not ready to forget. Shelley is furious when she arrives home to find Alan with the equipment, and in a rage she insists that she has decided to leave the village. Nicola is bitter having failed to set a wedding date with Simon and she takes out her fury on the cleaning team.

Alan takes Shelley to The Woolpack for dinner but she is furious to discover that it came courtesy of Steph. Val helps Eric organise an exhibition and proactively suggests that they need more publicity. Eric disagrees, warning her that their venture isn’t strictly above board, but Val places an advertisement regardless. Ashley becomes so preoccupied trying to set up a drama society that he unwittingly ignores Laurel. He later admits to Zoe that he is desperately trying to make himself indispensable in the hope that the bishop won’t send him to another parish.

Shelley admits to Alan that she wants to go to Spain, but he tells her he can’t leave Steph alone. Shelly remains adamant that she's going regardless, telling him that he must choose between her and his daughter. Andy promises Libby that he will look after her horse but panics when he notices a rusty nail embedded in its hoof. Andy calls for a vet but when Max turns up the rivalry between them is instantly apparent. Eric is mad when Val gets top billing in the newspaper and panics when Glynis questions his relationship with Val. Eric is all too aware of what a loose cannon Val can be and worries about what she might say.

Eric is terrified as Glynis turns up at the gallery opening with a photographer from the local paper. He desperately tries to prevent her from finding out where the paintings came from until Rodney takes pleasure in divulging the information. Steph is reduced to tears as Alan reluctantly asks her to leave him and Shelley alone. She pleads that she is only trying to make amends but agrees to leave the village if that is what he really wants. Elsewhere, Tom is livid when he finds out that Jimmy has outbid the Kings for a contract. Tom angrily confronts his son but Jimmy insists that business is business.

Shelley faces her demons as she cleans the B&B, but revisiting the cellar brings back dark memories of the suffering that Steph previously forced her to endure. Shelly is later horrified when she returns home to find that Alan has invited Steph round for dinner and during the meal she cracks, forcing Alan to choose between them. When he hesitates, Shelly declares that she is leaving the village the following morning. Elsewhere, Libby is amused when she walks in on an embarrassed Andy ironing in just a towel. She later asks him to join her for a drink, but when Andy explains he has got to get home, Libby assumes that he isn’t interested.

Shelley says her farewells before leaving the village, telling a tearful Alan that all he has to do is call if he decides he’d like to join her. Steph later visits Alan and is overwhelmed when he admits he couldn’t leave her behind. She vows to go after Shelley herself to convince her to come back, claiming that if she's successful she will not be returning herself. As Steph leaves she says an emotional goodbye to her dad, explaining that this may be the last time they see each other. Meanwhile, Eric tells Val the exhibition has turned into a disaster since Glynis unlawfully revealed that he's giving the profits away. Val points out that they are still able to deduct expenses and is confident that with some clever accountancy they’ll come out on top.

Steph goes to Arran in search of Shelly, while Alan desperately waits for news on whether it will be his daughter or girlfriend who will be returning. Later in Arran, Steph follows Shelly onto a ferry and they come face to face on the top deck. Shelly is petrified when she sees Steph, but is determined that for once she must stand up to her bully. There is a scuffle between the two of them and Shelly loses her footing before falling overboard into the ice-cold sea below, pulled beneath the waves and out of sight.

Louise and Terry prepare to look at another B&B until Terry finds out that Dawn needs him to look after TJ. Matthew offers to accompany Louise instead and she gratefully agrees. As they look around, Matthew turns on the charm but is careful not to give too much away. Matthew suggests they stay for lunch and over a few glasses of wine he proposes a toast to their new venture.

Matthew offers Louise and Terry a hand going through the B&B books and Louise later thanks him with a free pint in The Woolpack. Matthew suggestively tells Louise that he could help her with more than just the accounts but picking up on his proposition she firmly insists him that she is attached. Matthew bluffs that she's got the wrong end of the stick but Louise is clearly ill at ease. Over at the vicarage, Laurel and Ashley cosy up on the sofa until they are interrupted by Ethan. Uncomfortable in his presence, Laurel leaves and she later glumly tells Nicola that things aren’t going well between her the vicar.

Louise and Terry decide to go through with the mortgage on the B&B but Louise is surprised when Matthew sends Carl in his place with the documentation. Later that day Louise goes to visit Matthew and hands over the signed forms. She apologises for the previous day but Matthew insists that she got the wrong idea, not him. She offers to buy him a drink, but Matthew refuses and shuts the door on a disappointed Louise. Meanwhile, Colleen joins Chloe and Carl for dinner and Chloe lays on the charm offensive. The subject of the poison pen letters comes up and Chloe insists that she never believed that Colleen sent them. Carl is left thoughtful, hoping to get to the bottom of the letters. Elsewhere, Laurel admits to Ashley that she's finding the distance between them difficult and he confesses that he is finding it equally as hard.

Carl continues to think about the pen letters and he asks Chas if she still has them. She digs them out and Chloe is later horrified when she comes home to find Carl studying them. Carl tells Chloe that he doesn’t understand why the letters suddenly stopped and Chloe covers her tracks by saying that she received another one but kept it to herself. She later quickly pens the letter and produces it to a flummoxed Carl. Meanwhile, Dawn is excited at the prospect of taking a job at an estate agency, but she is later downhearted when she works out that after childminding and travel costs it will not be worth her while. Over in The Woolpack, Matthew flirts with a lady client purely for Louise’s benefit. At an opportune moment, Louise apologises for the previous day and says she feels like an idiot. Matthew relishes in the fact that he has regained the upper hand.

Carl has a private chat with Colleen about the letters and he asks her to write the word ‘waste’. She is disgruntled by her ex-husband's accusations but writes the word regardless. Carl later cleverly asks Chloe to write a letter for Tom and as he dictates he includes the same word. Chloe incorrectly spells the word ‘waist’ and Carl is horrified as the mistake matches an error on the letter. Meanwhile, when Viv takes her new pet rabbit to the Vet's, Paddy is clearly nervous in her presence.

Carl confronts Chloe about the letter and despite her desperate attempts she is unable to convince him that she is innocent. Carl tells her that he wants her out of the house and Jimmy turns up to reinforce his decision. Over in the post office, Dawn sees Ashley who tells her that he's struggling to find a baby-sitter for Gabby. Dawn offers her services and is delighted to have found a solution to her cash crisis. Paddy’s strange behaviour provokes questions from Marlon and leads Emily to seek marital advice from a painfully guilty Viv. Later at The Woolpack, realising he left his glasses behind after their moment of passion, Paddy arranges to meet Viv outside the toilets to retrieve them. Katie’s nerves prove unfounded when she impresses Tom during an interview at the King's. However, Donna is also up for the job. Meanwhile, violence erupts in the village ahead of the fete when Edna and Pearl end up fighting over a packet of raisins!

The temperature plummets when an astonished Marlon catches them together. Meanwhile, Laurel rebuffs Ashley’s invitation to be the judge of the baking competition, suggesting the Bishop takes her place seeing as he seems to be doing most of the judging in Emmerdale. Ashley is led into temptation when one too many glasses of wine unleashes his concealed passion for Laurel. Jimmy is delighted to rejoin the family business. Meanwhile, Laurel is determined to prove that she can be a perfect vicar's wife by playing host to the Bishop.

Sadie is unwilling to believe that Jimmy’s financial situation is so poor and determined to get her fair share of the Kings’ cash she tries a different tack and arranges to meet her husband in The Woolpack. Sadie is left reeling when Jimmy triumphantly reveals that he's been welcomed back into the King fold and that she won’t get a penny out of them. Sadie is shattered as the realisation hits home that she is no longer part of the family and she leaves feeling completely alone. Meanwhile, Nicola faces an uphill struggle to keep her relationship with a reluctant Simon on track. She invites him for a meal with her and a friend the following evening but he is clearly not keen. Elsewhere, Dawn worries about her finances when her earning potential is hindered by her inability to drive.

Sadie’s attempt to gain sympathy from Tom backfires when he gladly accepts her token gesture of returning her engagement ring, since it originally belonged to his wife. Feeling rejected, a paranoid Nicola gives Betty a tongue-lashing when she overhears her gossiping, assuming it's about her. Meanwhile, Dawn unwittingly upsets Bob when she ropes Scott into giving her driving lessons.

Sadie’s fortunes continue to plummet when she fails to convince Zoe to go along with a business deal. She later feels isolated further when Max and Carl give her the brush-off in The Woolpack. Feeling desperate, Sadie seeks comfort from Robert and when she visits him at Annie’s Cottage it doesn’t take long for them to head upstairs. Post coital, Sadie feels worse rather than better. Realising that she’s completely alone, she decides to escape and heads back to Home Farm to pack her bags. As Sadie flees the village, she promises Zoe that Jimmy will get his comeuppance when she returns. Elsewhere, Nicola is upset when Lesley mentions that Simon is due to be best man at his friend’s wedding and she confronts him about why he has kept it quiet. Simon assures her that it just slipped his mind, but Nicola is left worrying about the strength of their relationship.

A harmless competition of ‘Mr and Mrs’ in The Woolpack ends in a bitter row when Simon confesses that his dream home would be in Scarborough. Having wrongly assumed that he would want to live with her in Emmerdale, Nicola is furious. Meanwhile, Jimmy is delighted to hear that Sadie has disappeared and heads to Pear Tree Cottage to tell Tom and Carl the good news. Tom is clearly not in the mood for celebrating, disappointed at the way things have worked out. Elsewhere, Scott and Dawn are unable to stay civil with one another as he attempts to teach her to drive. Giving it up as a bad job, Dawn asks Bob if he would consider helping her and a thrilled Bob readily accepts the challenge.

Lesley’s interfering is welcomed for the first time when she tells Nicola about Simon’s past and the breakdown of his previous relationship. Realising that Simon is scared of commitment, she confronts him and he finally opens up to her. After a long chat they announce that Simon is moving to Emmerdale and the couple look smitten as they look forward to their future together. Meanwhile, Viv and Bob are separately miserable as their divorce finally comes through. Viv is delighted when Paddy offers to take her to The Woolpack for a drink, but despite keeping up appearances, it is clear that she is as sad as Bob that their marriage is officially over. Over at the Antiques Barn, Rodney surprises Paul by asking him to become part owner of the family business. Paul accepts, knowing that is a big step forward for him and his recently found father.

When Emily is late home from a shopping trip with Paul, Paddy heads over to the shop and is unable to resist when Viv invites him upstairs for a bite to eat. The tension mounts between the lonely individuals and before long they are wrapped around one another, forgetting all about the chicken sizzling under the grill. Otherwise engaged, Paddy and Viv fail to notice the grill pan has caught fire, but as the smoke alarm goes crazy and Donna flies in, they are forced to lie that Paddy heard the noise and came to save the day. As Donna brands the vet a hero, he and Viv are clearly embarrassed by their behaviour. Elsewhere, Nicola and Simon grow closer as they plan their future together. However, Rodney is mortified when he is left with Lesley for company!

Zoe is disappointed when Callum fails to attend the birthday party that she's laid on for him, and when she confronts him he accuses her of using him as an excuse to invite people round. Despite their row, Callum eventually shows his face and has an unexpectedly good time. Louise joins the celebrations and can’t help but flirt outrageously with Matthew. Fearing that she's on the brink of doing something that she may regret, she makes a sudden exit and heads for Diane’s. Louise confesses that she has feelings for Matthew but insists that she wants her relationship with Terry to work. Elsewhere, Paddy is disappointed when Emily snubs him for Paul yet again. Viv convinces him that one final fling with her will make him feel better, and she books them a hotel on the internet. Donna becomes suspicious of her mother's behaviour and snoops around for evidence.

A suspicious Donna persuades a reluctant Marlon to follow her mother. Horrified that she is close to discovering Paddy and Viv’s affair, he desperately distracts his girlfriend and she fails to discover the identity of Viv's mystery man. Inside the hotel room, a guilty Paddy decides that he can’t go through with the liaison and leaves a disappointed Viv feeling dejected and alone. Meanwhile, Emily goes looking for her husband and when she is unable to find him she confesses to Paul that she is no longer happy with her relationship.

As Emily makes a special effort with Paddy he is full of remorse and contemplates confessing all. Marlon strongly advises him to keep quiet. Over in the shop, Viv also wrestles with her conscience and she gives a surprised Emily the day off. Confused about the odd behaviour of those around her, Emily seeks advice from Paul in an attempt to save her marriage. Elsewhere, Val and Bob provide support for one another in their individual quests. Bob admits that he is looking for a woman, and Val admits that she's after a job!

Emily walks out of the shop after a rude comment from Viv, and when she returns home in a rage Paddy gets the wrong end of the stick and confesses all. Over at the B&B, Val is amused when she catches Bob recording a video message in an attempt to get a date. After considerable teasing she offers to help, and after a couple of bottles of wine she offers herself! Elsewhere, Dawn is outraged to discover that Scott conned an elderly lady out of her car and returns the automobile to its rightful owner. The young mum is left in disgust at her boyfriend's behaviour.

Viv is at a loss as to what to do and Paddy tries in vain to talk to his dismissive wife. Elsewhere, Val and Bob wake up together and make a pact to tell no one of their liaison. Later in the pub, Eric is jealous of the flirting going on between the two of them and he asks Val out. Meanwhile, Diane and Jack return home from the hospital and head to The Woolpack to celebrate Diane's final chemo session. A sentimental Jack tells Diane how happy he is that she has come through the worst of her illness.

Emily struggles to come to terms with her husband's betrayal, but after a few words of advice from Paul, she plucks up the courage to confront both Paddy and Viv. The disgraced postmistress and vet begin to argue over whose fault it was and Emily eventually cracks under the pressure. She tells them that she wants things to carry on as usual and that no one in the village is to know about the affair. Elsewhere, Jack is concerned about Diane when she snaps at Victoria and, guessing that she is apprehensive about her forthcoming scan, he does his best to reassure her. Meanwhile, Bob decides that he is determined to achieve one of his greatest ambitions – to get into the Guinness Book of Records! He enlists the help of Val.

It's business as usual for Emily who is determined to behave as though her husband's affair never happened. A guilt-ridden Viv demands that Emily punch her in the face for revenge, but Emily calmly responds that she has no right to tell her what to do. Despite her composed demeanour, Emily confides in Paul and breaks down as she tells him that she can’t stop thinking about the betrayal. She returns home, only to find Paddy and Viv discussing what has happened and, despite her instinct to flip, she disappears up to bed, leaving the shamed couple feeling worse than ever. Meanwhile, Donna incorrectly assumes that Viv and Bob are back together and goes to see her step-father to find out what's going on. Val and Bob are busy practicing their world record attempt and not wanting Donna to interrupt, he shouts out that he is with a woman. Donna takes this as confirmation that he is with Viv and later ignores Marlon’s protestations that she is wrong.

Emily is irritated when she finds herself clearing up after Paddy at home. When she gets to work she can feel her blood boiling as Laurel innocently tells her that she has heard that Viv has been seeing someone on the sly. Emily's pent up aggression finally becomes too much to contain and the usually timid character explodes, snapping at Len before attacking the shop in a frenzy. She sweeps the products off the shelves and smashes everything to the ground. Before long a crowd gathers and a horrified Viv realises that she has only got herself to blame. Later that day, Donna sees the wreckage in the shop and demands an explanation from her mother.

A furious Emily packs Paddy's bags before storming over to The Woolpack. The punters look on in shock as Emily dumps the suitcases at her husband's feet and announces that he has been sleeping with the postmistress. When Viv is unable to deny the affair, Bob punches Paddy. Zak gets Paddy to his feet, but punches him as well, saying that that was for Butch. Nicola has a go at Viv and then hits Paddy with her handbag. When Marlon gets Paddy back to his feet, Scott says that Paddy disgusts him. Donna discovers that Marlon knew about it. Later, outside Smithy Cottage, Emily tells Paddy that their marriage was failed along time ago and their marriage didn't fail because of Viv. Emily tells Paddy that they were good friends but there was never any passion or romance. She tells Paddy she loves him but that she doesn't fancy him. Emily says that they should never have got married in the first place and that Paddy knows it as well as she does. Emily tells Paddy that the marriage is over.

Matthew’s sights are set firmly on Louise and despite the obvious chemistry between them she continues to reject his advances. With Terry away, Matthew tries a new approach and he openly tells the barmaid that he is crazy about her. Louise insists that she is attached, but the handsome King tells her that it’s dinner at his tomorrow night or nothing. Elsewhere, Zak does his best to cheer a miserable Emily and invites her to have tea at the Dingles’. She gratefully accepts his offer but later shocks him when she announces that it's over between her and Paddy because he will always come second to her late husband, Butch. Over at the veterinary surgery, Paddy struggles to carry on as usual and when he overhears Tamsin and Libby gossiping about him. He warns Libby that he will sack her if he hears a peep out of her again.

Louise struggles to suppress her desire as Matthew openly plans their dinner together. In a desperate attempt to remain loyal to Terry, she tells Matthew he's a walking cliché and to leave her alone. Later, Louise is consumed by lust. After telling Bob that she's going for a walk, she finds herself at Matthew's door. A delighted Matthew reaches to help her out of her coat and before long they are wrapped up in a passionate clinch. Afterwards, an extremely pleased Matthew pours two glasses of champagne but Louise leaves telling him that it was a one off and will never happen again. Elsewhere, Andy, Robert and Victoria anxiously wait for their parents to return home and are thrilled when Jack and Diane arrive with news that Diane has been given the all clear. Jack proposes a celebration, but soon regrets it when his wife plans a long shopping trip funded by him!

Sadie takes advantage of Cain’s obvious desire for her by telling him that she’ll reward him generously if he gets hold of evidence about Jimmy’s real financial situation. He agrees to sneak into Pear Tree Cottage. Meanwhile, Louise is distracted by thoughts of her night of passion and arouses Diane’s suspicions with her odd behaviour. Unable to stay away, Louise meets Matthew in the car park for another tryst but has second thoughts, leaving Matthew aching for more. Later that day, Louise panics when Matthew starts up a friendly conversation with Terry and at an opportune moment she warns Matthew off and tells him their fling was a mistake. Over at the Dingles’, Chas boasts that she has more will-power than Zak or Shadrach and declares she could give up drinking without a problem. Her father and uncle declare that they could give up booze tomorrow and Chas swiftly takes them up on the offer.

Sadie distracts the Kings in The Woolpack while Cain sneaks into the office to look for evidence of Jimmy’s true financial state. Unable to find sufficient paperwork, Cain decides to take Jimmy's laptop along with a few other valuables. Sadie is later relieved that Cain has narrowly avoided being caught and she gives him his bonus before leaving him hanging with a passionate kiss. Meanwhile, Zak and Shadrach soon break their booze ban when Rodney asks them to help him shift some crates of beer. Chas finds the drunken Dingles and tells Rodney about their supposed plans to stay sober. Rodney challenges them to stop drinking for a month in return for £500. Elsewhere, a guilt-stricken Louise makes a special effort with Terry and turns down Matthew’s invitation to spend the night in a hotel. Matthew remains determined that he can win her round.

Sadie is horrified when Denzel questions her about the robbery at Pear Tree Cottage and hints that Cain may have exceeded his brief. On the warpath, Sadie confronts Cain and he reluctantly admits that he stole Jimmy’s laptop. Despite her initial fury, all is forgiven when Sadie realises that this is exactly what she needs to get her claws on the Kings’ cash. Over in The Woolpack, Rodney is delighted as he catches Zak and Shadrach ordering two pints, but they astonish everyone by ordering two pints of water! Meanwhile, Louise is put on the spot during a drunken game of ‘sex or death’ when Paul asks her about Matthew. Louise lies that she would rather die than sleep with him but despite her apparent objection, Matthew proves popular with the others and he is later smug when Val tells him that he is the most eligible bachelor in the village.

Zak resolves to keep his mind off booze by taking a reluctant Shadrach fishing. Noting the gloomy atmosphere, Zak tries to cheer Shadrach up with a cup of tea instead of an alcoholic drink but it clearly isn’t enough to satisfy him. Sneaky Shadrach later steals money from the Dingle pot and treats himself to a few drinks at The Malt Shovel. Zak is appalled when he realises what his brother has done and throws him out of the house, branding him scum. Meanwhile, Louise is unable to deny her feelings any longer and when Terry goes out for the day with TJ, she finds herself back in the arms of the irresistible King. Post coital, Louise and Matthew share a tender moment as she admits that it feels so right even though she knows that it's wrong.

Rodney calls off the bet when he catches Shadrach drinking in The Woolpack, but an angry Zak manages to convince Rodney that he has stuck to the rules and persuades him to re-negotiate the deal. Shadrach leaves The Woolpack and disgraces himself by urinating in the street. A disgusted Edna catches him in the act and demanding police action, Denzel is called, leaving Chas torn between her father and her relationship. Elsewhere, Robert delights in telling Sadie that Katie let slip that Jimmy has put in an offer to buy some land. Sadie is intrigued and offers Robert a reward to find out more. Meanwhile, Cain keeps a close eye on Sadie and is furious to see her saying farewell to Robert.

Sadie is impressed when Robert tells her that he has discovered that Jimmy has offered a local £10,000 for her field. Sadie instantly organises a meeting and undercuts her husband's offer to ensure that she becomes the proud owner of the land that is invaluable to the Kings. Later that day, Cain tries to seduce a uninterested Sadie and, after cruelly putting him down, she heads off for a steamy session with Robert. As they lay in the hay at Home Farm they are oblivious to the fact that a furious Cain has caught them in the act. Over at the Antiques Barn, Shadrach asks Rodney for another shot at the bet. Softened by his sincerity, Rodney agrees to give him another chance on the condition that if he fails he has to take a bath on Main Street!

The couple are pleased when Andy offers his congratulations. Cain ruffles Sadie’s feathers when he lets slip that he knows about her and Robert. Later on, in The Woolpack, he witnesses the Sugden family celebrating Robert and Katie's engagement. Irritated by the scene of family happiness, Cain promptly informs Andy that Robert is still having his cake and eating it. Meanwhile, Tom returns and Jimmy confidently tells his father about the offer he made for Mrs Kidderminster’s land but fails to inform him of the burglary. Later, Tom is surprised to see Sadie back in the village and is suspicious of her sudden reappearance. Elsewhere, Jarvis and Len practice their cricketing skills but it soon becomes clear that Jarvis's talents are not what they used to be.

Jimmy is stunned to learn that Mrs Kidderminster has sold her land to Sadie despite his offer. He quickly realises that his estranged wife must be behind the stolen laptop and attempts in vain to persuade Sadie to sell him the land. He later breaks the news to Tom and Matthew who decide to quiz Katie about the break-in. Meanwhile, Andy discovers Robert’s dark secret as Cain’s accusations ring in his ears. He quizzes Daz about Robert and Sadie and his suspicions are confirmed when he later witnesses the pair in close contact. An enraged Andy sets off to confront his wayward brother. She later catches Paddy looking at jobs abroad and hints that it's something she has considered herself. Meanwhile, Edna creates a fuss when she refuses to allow Paddy to treat her dog.

After discussing Sadie’s demand, the Kings conclude that it would be a bad idea to allow her to regain her interest in the business. Tom and Carl visit Home Farm to break the news to Sadie, who reacts by telling a stunned Tom that Zoe is now going to sell her the only other bit of land that they need for their development. Shaken by Sadie's plans, Tom is forced to concede and offers her a 10% share in King & Sons. Sadie is triumphant. Meanwhile, a concerned Jack questions Robert about his spat with Cain. Robert informs him that it was Cain who spread the rumours about him and Sadie. Robert again denies any wrongdoing and explains he was negotiating with Sadie about buying a property on the new King development. Jack is concerned. Elsewhere, Zoe worries that Dawn is not coping very well with the task of looking after both TJ and Jean.

Jack turns detective when he visits the council offices and discovers that the Kings have gained planning permission to build housing on Zoe’s and Mrs Kidderminster’s land. Jack wastes no time in revealing to Zoe and Andy the Kings true intentions. The trio make a pact to stop Sadie and the rest of the King family. Meanwhile, a triumphant Sadie arrives at the Kings and gleefully announces that Zoe has agreed to sell her the last field needed for their development. Sadie admits that Zoe is under the illusion the field is to be used for a livery business. However, Sadie is stunned when Andy, Jack and Zoe arrive and inform the gathered King family the game is up and that they are aware of their true intentions for the land. Angry at being duped, Zoe makes it clear she would only sell the land to Jack and that she wants Sadie to move out of Home Farm. Elsewhere in the village,

Meanwhile, Viv sets about fighting for Jean, and after visiting the Citizen's Advice Bureau she tells Scott that they stand a good chance of getting custody of Jean by proving that Zoe is unbalanced. Scott is clearly uneasy at the thought of playing dirty. Over in The Woolpack, Emily finally ventures out of the house but struggles when faced with Viv. Paul cheers up Emily with his witty remarks about the postmistress but Viv is left feeling worse than ever.

Cain is furious when Sadie is dismissive about the previous night and feeling wronged the angry Dingle promises to make her pay. Later that day, Sadie is fraught when she finds a docile looking Damon, and she is later horrified when her beloved dog is pronounced dead. Meanwhile, Viv tries a different tack and asks Terry to make Zoe see sense about taking Jean away. Remembering how he felt when he thought he’d lose TJ he agrees to try, but Zoe quickly guesses that Viv sent him and insists that she has made up her mind. Elsewhere, Betty asks Jarvis how he will be celebrating his impending 65th birthday but he is determined that he doesn’t want to do anything. Betty asks Len to talk to him and when he does Jarvis reluctantly agrees to a few drinks the following day.

Tom can’t help but sympathise with Sadie and he offers to help bury her beloved pet. As they spend time together, Sadie comes clean about her past. Meanwhile, Jarvis’s pleas for a low key birthday are unheard and the quiet drinks he planned in The Woolpack soon turn into a party. Despite his initial reluctance, Jarvis soon goes with the flow, so much so that he puts his back out on the dance floor! That evening, Libby invites Andy to be her date at the farmer's ball the following week. He is thrilled to be asked but worries that his lack of dancing ability will let him down. Terry offers to give him lessons.

Carl notes that Chas is feeling low and he takes her out for a drink in Hotten to cheer her up. During the evening Chas tells him about her plans to join the army and he is clearly upset at the thought of losing her. Their conversation is interrupted when Chas sees an old friend and Carl is left gutted that he hasn’t had the opportunity to tell her how he really feels. Meanwhile, Tom is concerned when he hears that Sadie is planning to leave the village and he goes to say his goodbyes. Sadie hands over the land and assures him that she never wanted to use it as a lever to get back in with the Kings. Tom softens and invites her back into the firm. Over in the café, Viv takes great pleasure in outlining Home Farm’s sordid past to ensure potential buyers of the property are put off for good. An angry Zoe confronts Scott about his mother's behaviour and he gains himself a few brownie points for being sympathetic to her fury.

Chas tells her family that she plans to join the army and is disappointed when they make their disapproval crystal clear. Meanwhile, Carl worries that he can’t bear the thought of losing Chas and Max and advises his brother to talk to her. As he confesses his true feelings, Jimmy interrupts with a mocking comment and Chas is left believing that she is at the centre of some sort of bet. Elsewhere, as Sadie packs up her car, Tom approaches and asks her to manage a short-term contract near Huddersfield. Sadie is only too happy to accept and she leaves the village feeling delighted that she is still a part of the King fold. As Sadie drives away she almost ploughs into Cain and promises him that if she ever discovers that he was responsible for Damon’s death, next time she won’t stop. Meanwhile, Scott convinces Zoe to join him and Jean for a picnic and they enjoy a pleasant day out.

While Scott and Zoe continue to play happy families with Jean, Viv is busy speaking to a solicitor about Scott's rights as a father. It later comes to a head when Viv interrupts Scott and Zoe's lunch and announces the results of her investigations. Scott is openly angry at his mother for interfering and he follows her out. Viv and Scott discuss the situation and agree that it is brilliant that Zoe thinks they are at loggerheads. Scott then goes back to the pub and apologises to Zoe, telling her that he's told his mum that it's none of her business. Meanwhile, pregnant teenager Debbie is feeling increasingly isolated, and having spoken to no-one about her delicate state, she is in desperate need of help. She goes to her hideout place and calls a teen advice line but after asking a few awkward questions she hangs up.

Scott puts his plan into action and sends Viv round to Home Farm to apologise to Zoe. Viv spells out her concerns in her usual brash manner, clearing the way for Scott to arrive and offer Zoe a sympathetic shoulder. Elsewhere, Nicola tells Rodney and Paul that Lesley is coming to stay as she has hurt her arm she could do with a hand. A desperate Rodney is dismayed to find that the B&B is closed for refurbishment and is forced to invite the overly friendly woman into his home. Meanwhile, Daz thinks there is something strange about the way Debbie is acting.

Daz is determined to get to the bottom of what is bothering Debbie and he follows her as she sneaks off to her hide. Believing that she is alone, Debbie takes off her jumper and as she reveals her bump Daz bursts in and is shocked by what he sees before him. Debbie insists that Daz mustn’t tell a soul that she is pregnant. Elsewhere, Lesley has her feet firmly under the table at Mill Cottage, much to Nicola’s annoyance. Simon and Nicola head off to view houses and Lesley invites herself along, infuriating Nicola further. Meanwhile, Chas finds herself explaining her decision to join the army and insists that it is something that she has always dreamed of doing. Feeling that she is being discouraged she becomes even more determined that she has made the right decision.

Daz is clearly concerned about Debbie and he visits the hide armed with presents for the expectant mother. Debbie confesses that she plans to dump the baby at a hospital after the birth, but Daz argues that Zak and Lisa would help out if they knew. Daz pleads with Debbie to visit a doctor. Meanwhile, Carl confesses to Max that he can’t stand the thought of Chas leaving the village. Elsewhere, an embarrassed Andy visits Viv for a dancing lesson in preparation for the farmers’ ball and the postmistress takes delight in showing him a few moves!

Debbie panics when she overhears Zak and Shadrach saying that they are heading off to the woods and fearing that they’ll find her hide she asks Daz to go and clear it. The Dingles later stumble across Daz and he manages to excuse his whereabouts. However, he later tells Debbie that he won’t lie on her behalf anymore. Debbie fears that Daz will tell Andy about the baby and to keep him quiet she says she's going to see a doctor. She heads off to the surgery but bottles it at the last minute, later lying to Daz that she saw the doctor and everything is fine. Elsewhere, Andy's dancing lessons appear to be paying off and Viv is thrilled at his progress. He proudly tells Libby that she is in for a surprise at the farmer's ball leaving her curious as to what he has planned!

Debbie begins to feel the first twinges of labour, but refusing to tell anyone about her suffering, she sneaks off alone into her hide. As the contractions continue, the terrified teenager realises she needs help but as she reaches for her phone she howls with pain as she watches the battery die. Daz arrives to find Debbie in labour. Over in The Woolpack, the locals give Chas the send-off she deserves, but Carl is clearly struggling to stand back and watch her leave. Elsewhere, Andy is ready to impress Libby with his newly acquired dance moves. However, when he turns up at the farmers’ ball he realises that waltzing isn’t on the agenda!

Debbie’s waters have broken and despite her pleas for Daz to stay, he rushes off in search of help. Alone in the hide, Debbie is forced to pull herself together and concentrate as she gives birth to a baby girl. Having heard the news from Daz, Emily rushes into the hide to find a terrified Debbie with an unconscious baby. As Emily revives the tiny girl, Daz arrives with Dr Forsythe and after making sure mother and baby are well they are escorted to Emily's house where Debbie is faced with Zak and Lisa. Meanwhile, unaware of the unfolding events, Paddy loses hope of winning over Emily when she dashes off with Daz in favour of talking to him.

Debbie is in the hospital after giving birth to a baby girl. She looks over at her sleeping baby. In the waiting area Zak tells Lisa that he will never forget the look on Debbie's face. Zak takes the baby from the hospital and heads back to the house. When Zak breaks the news to Cain that the baby is his granddaughter, Cain takes the news badly - insists he's scared but not angry and rushes out. Paul arrives at Smithy Cottage with a box of chocolates for Emily. He tells Emily that his gig didn't go well but Dr Forsythe gave him a lift. Paddy enters and gives Emily a letter that was posted next door and explains that Marlon slept in The Woolpack. Emily tells Paddy that she is glad she ran after Daz and tells Paul that Paddy asked her back and that she is very glad she came home early the night before. Libby tells Andy that she can't be bothered to show Bobby round the stables and that she just wants to go back to bed.

Cain remains determined to stand by his daughter and grandchild and an impressed Zak invites him to move back in. Daz continues to offer his support and naively suggests to Debbie that they bring up the baby together. He is hurt by her horrified response and feeling low he heads back to the farm where Andy questions his mood. Daz blurts out that Debbie has had Andy's baby and the young farmer stands in shock as the enormity of the news sinks in. Elsewhere, Matthew and Louise play a dangerous game, and as they get friendly in the cellar Diane makes her way down the stairs.

Jack is stunned to discover he is a grandfather, but after his initial fury he calms down and heads up to the Dingles’ with Andy. Cain refuses to let them in until Zak intervenes, insisting that Debbie and Andy need to talk. Andy holds the baby in his arms and is mesmerised by her beauty. Debbie tells Andy that she's named the baby Sarah, after his late adoptive-mum and although he is initially shocked, it helps to reinforce his part in the baby's life. Debbie is thrilled when Andy promises to be there for them. Elsewhere, Louise and Matthew are excited that the B&B will be ready in a week, knowing Terry will move back in, giving them more space.

Matthew takes Terry for a night out, but after getting him uncontrollably drunk, Matthew carries him home where Terry passes out on the sofa. Taking advantage of the situation, Matthew and Louise head upstairs, but when Val hears noises she investigates the situation and discovers their affair. Meanwhile, Andy is forced to put an end to his relationship with Libby in order to face up to his responsibilities. Despite his best efforts to do the right thing, Andy feels he can’t win when Robert fumes over the baby's name and Tamsin shouts at him over his treatment of her sister. Elsewhere, having lied to Eric about planning a birthday party for him, Val desperately tries to think of ways to organise something at short notice. Realising that none of the villagers wants to spend an evening with the local con artist, she begins to panic.

Bob and Val create the idea of a VE celebration as a cover to get people to attend Eric's birthday party the following day. Val ends up admitting to Bob that she has fallen for Eric. Over at the council meeting Eric rejects Glynis admitting that his feelings lie with Val. Debbie and Cain face the village for the first time with baby Sarah. Meanwhile, Jack tells a stunned audience at the pub that Andy is the father of Debbie's baby. Elsewhere Louise tells Val that last night with Matthew was a one off. Val reassures her that her secret is safe.

Total mayhem ensues when Eric hears the truth from the villagers about the real reason for their attendance to the party. Although Val is heartbroken when Eric blames her, she whole-heartedly apologises and after a few home truths are exchanged Eric softens. The Dingles are coming round to Andy being Sarah’s father, due to the fact Jack is worth a bob or two. However Cain makes a point of reminding Andy what will happen if he messes them around. Meanwhile, back at the party Louise is tempted to take a break from running the bar to head off with Matthew. However she turns down his advances.

After Louise has spent a sneaky lunch break in bed with Matthew, she is horrified to find out that he had also made plans to meet Terry at the same time. She lets Matthew know how annoyed she is with him. When Val arrives at Eric's with her worldly possessions he is visibly unaware of her plans to move in. Over in The Woolpack, Ivan takes pleasure in buying Tamsin drinks, but she ends up so drunk that Diane has to politely ask her to leave.

Louise and Matthew grab an opportunity to sneak off to a guest house together. Post coital Matthew half-heartedly suggests she lie to Terry in order to spend more time with him. Louise agrees but quickly susses that Matthew doesn’t appreciate how difficult she finds being dishonest to Terry. Upset she calls the affair off and leaves. Meanwhile, Eric suggests to Val that with his factory and business acumen and her sewing skills they could set up a successful soft furnishings company together. After a successful day trip with Scott and their daughter Jean, Zoe tells Effie, the nanny, how impressed she is with the effort Scott has been making as a father.

Zoe is impressed by Scott’s recent paternal decision and shocks him by asking if he’d like to accompany her and Jean by moving to California. Scott can’t believe his luck and all his feelings for Zoe come flooding back. Meanwhile, in The Woolpack work-shy Tamsin wonders how hard bar work can be and offers her services to Diane. Diane tells her that she needs someone with more experience.

Zoe receives a visit from Social Services and is convinced that Viv is behind it. When the Social Worker mentions to Zoe about her losing two brothers, Zoe becomes infuriated and tells Scott only him and Ashley knew about that so he must have told Viv. It suddenly dawns on Zoe that Viv and Scott have been colluding together all this time. Has Scott just blown his chances of a future together with Zoe and Jean? Elsewhere, the Sugden's barn is flooded and the blame is pinned on Daz.

Donna is shocked by Scott’s generosity with money, unaware that it is his way of saying goodbye as he prepares to leave the country with Zoe and Jean. Before heading to Home Farm, Scott also posts a letter to girlfriend Dawn. Having acknowledged his feelings for Zoe, Scott gets down on one knee at Home Farm to propose. Zoe is unable to keep up the pretence that everything is going ahead as planned and tells him there is no way she will marry him, before retracting her invitation for Scott to join her and Jean in America. Scott reacts by throwing her down against the table in a rage. Zoe grabs the nearest thing to her, a syringe filled with Ketamine she had just prepared for an injured horse and plunges it into him. As Scott falls to the floor Zoe picks up a second syringe just as Paddy walks in and witnesses the attack.

The police arrive at Home Farm to question Zoe. When the engagement ring and the puncture wounds on Scott’s body are discovered, DI Warren begins to wonder if Zoe knows more than she is letting on and she is arrested on suspicion of assault. Paddy is told that he must give a statement but is aware this evidence is crucial to Zoe's fate. When the drugs are mentioned and the fact that as a vet, Zoe would be aware of their effect on humans, the pressure is on Paddy to ensure some damage limitation. Meanwhile, Viv is told of Scott's condition and rushes to the hospital. Adamant that Zoe is responsible, Viv tells Bob that Zoe will pay for what she has done.

Zoe awaits news on whether she is to be charged or not until the police have obtained a statement from Scott, who is currently unconscious. Eventually, Zoe is released on bail but told to have no contact with witnesses. That afternoon, back at Home Farm, there's a knock at the door and Viv barges her way in. Zoe tells Viv that Scott tried to rape her but Viv is having none of it and goes for Zoe. A struggle ensues but Depaul arrives and prises them apart, telling Zoe she’ll end up getting herself arrested again. Elsewhere, Dawn is furious when she receives Scott's letter telling her he's left the village and, feeling betrayed, she decides to flee to Spain.

Kelly Windsor makes a shock return to the village to be at Scott’s bedside, but step-mum Viv isn’t impressed. Kelly doesn’t waste any time in showing that she hasn’t changed when a young doctor on duty arrives and she sets about seducing him. Kelly quick slips back into caring mode when Viv arrives back from the canteen. Meanwhile, Ashley pays Zoe a visit and asks her to explain what happened. He reminds her of a previous comment she made saying that she wanted Scott out of her life for good, but Zoe is indignant at his suggestions. Elsewhere, Max tells Jimmy that Andy may lose his entire flock of sheep due to illness resulting in a loss of £10,000.

With an arguing family by his bedside, Scott awakes. He tries to speak and manages to mumble something about Zoe trying to kill him. Before those around him can make sense of what he is saying he begins to fit and as the nurse calls for assistance the family are hustled out. When Bob and Donna are alone, he admits to her that Scott had written Dawn a letter explaining that he and Zoe were running away together. Donna is stunned but finally understands Dawn's reasons for going to Spain. The doctor explains to a distraught Viv that Scott may suffer permanent brain damage. As the family take in the news, the police knock on Zoe's door and escort her away for questioning. While Emily baby-sits Sarah, Debbie is distraught to find that Andy won’t leave the farm to spend time with her.

Kelly turns up at Home Farm with a journalist and snap-happy photographer. Zoe is stunned, and when pushed for a comment she realises she's beaten and heads inside. Meanwhile, Dawn arrives at the hospital and is stunned to see Scott’s delicate condition. Kelly makes snide comments about Dawn not being there sooner and as she tries to defend herself she goes to grab Scott's letter. Elsewhere, Robert is angry when he finds a cheque that Jack has written for Andy. He thinks that Andy is becoming Jack's favourite son and is determined to get back at him, so sets about chatting up Libby. Andy is upset when he sees Libby accept a lift from Robert.

At the hospital, Dawn is irritated by Kelly and Viv’s continuous bitchy remarks and finally snaps showing a stunned Viv the letter from Scott. Viv is distraught and in her frustration she begs Scott to wake up. She refuses to believe her would leave her and is desperate to question him. After pressure from Cain, Andy visits Debbie. She tells him that she wishes they could spend more time together and suggests that she moves back to Butler's Farm to be with him. Elsewhere, Lesley suspects that there is something strange about Rose and determined to get to the bottom of it, she invites her to the pub. Lesley opens up to Rose and confesses that she lied about her arm to get close to her son.

Andy confesses to Jack that while he wants to do the right thing by Sarah, he no longer has any feelings for Debbie. Andy pays Debbie a visit and when she tells him that she loves him, he admits that he doesn’t feel the same. He apologises but Debbie is inconsolable. He insists he’ll always be there for Sarah, but an angry Debbie says he can’t have the baby without her. Debbie is distraught as she watches the man she loves walk away. Ashley is taken aback when he gets a call out of the blue from his brother asking if Jasmine, Ashley's 15 year old niece, can come to stay. Kelly, meanwhile, spends the day flirting with Danny.

A distraught Debbie tells Cain that she and Andy are finished. Cain is ready to go and hunt Andy down but he receives a second blow when Debbie announces that she's called social services and is getting rid of her baby. The worried Dingles try to convince her it's just her hormones. However, unbeknown to the family, Debbie is still convinced that her baby will be better off with a foster family and puts her in a taxi. In the nick of time, Cain arrives and desperately tries to convince her not to abandon her responsibilities. He assures her that he will be there for her. After finding out that Debbie has banned Andy from seeing Sarah, Jack tells Robert that Andy could do with his support. Seizing the opportunity to get back in with his family so that he can work against them for the Kings, he lends Andy a shoulder to cry on.

Jack and Andy are disheartened at the cattle market when there are no bids for their cows because someone has said that their cattle are infected with pneumonia. They suspect the Kings, and Jack confronts Jimmy in the Woolpack. Robert witnesses the confrontation and questions his father as to whether the land is worth all the aggro. He is clearly trying to persuade him to sell to the Kings, but will Jack remain oblivious to his son's deception? Meanwhile, Jasmine is in the house alone and she sneaks into Steph’s room to find a box containing cuttings relevant to Shelley’s disappearance. Jasmine is clearly intrigued and when Steph returns home she subtly asks her about Shelley.

However, when he goes to sign the dotted line, Andy stops him in his tracks and the father and son leave delighted that the Kings haven’t managed to get one over on them. Tom later goes to see Jack and tells him the offer is still there if he wants it, but Jack makes it perfectly clear that he has no intention of selling. She begins to cry and tells him that she loves him but can’t be with him. Terry is completely stunned and devastated as Louise's words sink in. Elsewhere, Jimmy suggests employing Cain to put pressure on the Sugdens. Matthew disagrees, but Jimmy gets Cain on side regardless. Cain pockets fifty quid before telling Jimmy that although he’d love to smash Andy’s face in, he promised Debbie he wouldn’t.

Louise is pleased to see Diane back, and in need of a shoulder to cry on she tells her that she and Terry are over. Diane guesses that Matthew is involved and warns her that she is making a terrible mistake. When Val appears, it becomes clear that she already knew about the affair, leaving Diane furious. Louise is annoyed at Diane's interference and tells her to go to hell. Later, in the bar, Diane consoles Terry and feeling he deserves the truth, she tells him that Louise has been seeing Matthew. Ashley questions his fiancée about her feelings towards him but will she confess the truth?

Alice turns up out of the blue and announces that she and Sam are expecting a baby. Nervous at his family's reaction, Sam hides and is upset when he overhears Shadrach badmouthing his abilities as a father-to-be. Zak eventually finds Sam and tries to convince him that he's more than capable of being a good parent. Will the reluctant Dingle take Zak's advice on board? Elsewhere, Scott succeeds in winding up Zoe and an argument ensues when she claims that Scott raped her. Scott points out that she has breached her bail conditions and takes delight in ringing the police. Zoe is later horrified when the police arrive on her doorstep. Meanwhile, Bob has a date with an astrologer after joining a video dating agency but it turns out she doesn’t want to date a Capricorn, while Jimmy and Robert collude against Jack and Andy.

Alice is upset that Sam appears to be uninterested in having their baby and decides to head back to Norfolk alone. A few harsh words from Cain finally encourage Sam to see sense and he runs after her. Later the couple return all smiles, announcing that they plan to marry and live in Emmerdale. Over at the farm, Robert is annoyed to see that Katie has written to Andy and storms out in a rage. He later apologises to Andy but it is clear that he has something up his sleeve. Elsewhere, Zoe is surprised and delighted when her solicitor calls to tell her that there is a witness to Scott threatening her. Callum later returns home and when he sees Zoe and Jean together he is certain that he has done the right thing by lying for Zoe in court. Meanwhile, Bob goes on another date, but as Viv watches them like a hawk, he is paranoid that Avril will walk out on him.

Having been paid by Jimmy, Robert spikes Andy’s drink in the pub and when he later heads home in his car he is stunned to be pulled over and breathalysed by the police. The reading is high but he narrowly escapes being over the limit. Andy realises someone has reported him but feels confused knowing he only had one pint in the pub. Over at the Dingles’, Lisa returns from a trip to her Granny Clegg’s and is stunned to hear that Alice and Sam are expecting a baby. Initially Lisa can’t help but worry about their immaturity but Alice puts her mind at rest, assuring her they have everything under control. Meanwhile, Avril and Bob are getting on like a house on fire, much to Viv’s disgust. It becomes clear that there is no love lost between Bob's former wife and his new love interest. Is this war?

Andy tells Jack that he thinks the Kings were responsible for spiking his drinks the previous night. The angry father confronts Jimmy in the pub but the arrogant King denies any involvement. Jimmy, Cain and Robert get together and decide it's time to get heavy with Andy. They agree that if his barn were to go up in flames he wouldn't get a penny if it was made to look like an insurance job, therefore forcing him to sell the land. That evening, they turn up at the farm with arson in mind. Andy's Alsatian dog barks which alerts his attention and he goes to investigate. Cain attacks Andy as Jimmy sets light to the barn and Robert looks on with horror as his brother is brutally beaten to the ground. Daz arrives and fearing for Andy's life he grabs a pitch fork and lunges it into Jimmy. As Cain and Robert drag bleeding Jimmy out of the barn, Andy falls unconscious with the fire blazing around him. Could this be the end for the young farmer?

Jack is furious to learn that Jimmy and Cain are responsible for the fire and he heads over to the Kings’ to get to the bottom of the matter. Tom tells Jack to look in his own backyard and points out the feud between Robert and Andy. Jack goes to his car to find that Robert has disappeared. But unwilling to get the police involved, Matthew and Carl bully a reluctant Max to stitch him up on the vet's table. Elsewhere, Cain wakes a worried Sam and insists that he must be his alibi if anyone calls. Will Sam cover up for his brother?

Jack announces to Robert, Andy and Daz that they are going to the police to report Jimmy and Cain for causing the fire, and he takes Robert's apparent willingness as a sign he wasn’t involved. Upon seeing him and Andy bicker once more, though, Jack is quick to confront Robert and concludes that he was the one who orchestrated the incident. After being forced to confess to conspiring with the Kings against his own family, Robert protests his innocence by reminding Jack in front of Daz about what Andy did to Sarah. However, Jack responds by pointing out to Robert over what he did to Elaine before recounting the time he ruined Andy and Katie's marriage by sleeping with Sadie. Becoming further stroked at his own son for not showing any remorse for his actions, Jack angrily drags Robert off to the Kings' office. He insists the Kings stop their dangerous tactics or he’ll go to the police.

Nicola is convinced Simon is having an affair with Naomi. When she spots Simon and Naomi walking into Mulberry Cottage she charges into the house shouting at Simon for cheating on her. However, Nicola is startled when Simon tells her he has a surprise in store. Meanwhile, Rodney has noted that Lesley’s mind seems to be elsewhere and she tells him she has a secret that she's been keeping from Simon. Later in the pub, Simon notices the concerned look on Lesley's face and can’t help but feel worried. Also, Val has a plan to furnish the showroom at the factory.

Lesley shocks Simon by confessing that the family business is almost in liquidation and her house has been repossessed. Simon is furious that he has been kept in the dark all this time and Rodney thinks Nicola should be told. Elsewhere, Val and Eric are struggling with their business until local entrepreneur Brett Wright asks to see some of their work. Val tells him to come back the following day and they hatch a plan together. Meanwhile, Daffyd is still at Viv’s the morning after their date. When Viv goes downstairs to help Donna, Kelly wastes no time in trying to seduce Daffyd. Viv goes back upstairs and catches them and after telling Daffyd to leave, throws Kelly out as well.

Brett arrives at Mill Cottage and Val asks Lesley to play along with their plan. Rodney returns home and is surprised to see his house full of people. Quickly catching on, he decides to make Val and Eric suffer slightly, telling Brett details of a few made-up deals which may convince him to hire them. Simon goes to drown his sorrows in The Woolpack after seeing his accountant. Rodney threatens to tell Nicola the truth if Simon doesn’t. Also, Max tells Tom his guilty feelings about patching Jimmy up after being attacked by Daz and lying to Paddy. As they start to argue, Tom lets out a secret that he's been paying half of Max's wages at the vet's.

After a few drinks, Max decides he doesn’t need his family's help to make it on his own and storms out of the house, followed by Tom. Max starts to drive off but Tom is determined to stop his son leaving the village and blocks his exit. In anger, Max runs Tom over and he is knocked unconscious. Jimmy sees everything and claims to be the driver to save his brother from being arrested for drink driving. Tom is taken to hospital. Meanwhile, unaware of Simon’s financial situation, Nicola meets with a local interior designer.

Matthew talks things over with Jimmy and convinces him that it might be best if they take business matters into their own hands. Elsewhere, despite Lesley trying to stop her, Nicola goes furniture shopping. Lesley and Simon have a chat with Matthew who has some bad news for them. He doesn’t want to invest in their kind of business. Meanwhile, just when Val thinks she's got away with hiring Delilah behind Eric’s back, he unexpectedly turns up at work forcing Delilah to hide. Eric invites Val for dinner resulting in Delilah being locked in the factory for the night.

A guilty Max is feeling sorry for himself after the accident, believing that his father doesn’t want to see him until Sadie points out that Max has always been his dad's favourite. Encouraged by Sadie's support, Max agrees to visit Tom in hospital. Simon confesses to Rodney that he has no choice but to sell his business. Rodney offers to help, but Simon is adamant that he’ll sort the mess out on his own. Rodney demands Simon should tell Nicola about the business failing as she is blissfully unaware and continuing to shop for items for their new home. Delilah demands that her services at the factory are made legitimate leaving Val with no option but to tell Eric she's been working for him.

Rodney is angry to hear that Simon hasn’t told Nicola the bad news and so tells her himself. Nicola is furious that Simon has lied to her. Lesley later tells Nicola that Simon has had to sell his share of the restaurant as well as losing the fishmongers business. On hearing that Nicola knows his secret, Simon feels extremely guilty. The couple look set to split up unless Rodney and Lesley can make them come to their senses. Emily finds looking after the Dingles single-handedly a strain so decides to draw up a cleaning rota. Delilah flies into a rage calling Emily pathetic and tells her she’d have more fun if she was dead. Emily is shaken up but is grimly determined to continue with the rota. Meanwhile, at the factory, Delilah sets up a plan to make Eric appreciate Val more. She gives her the number of a man who owns a mill in Bradford, who can get her better fabric but for the same price, providing she doesn’t give Delilah's name.

Lesley and Rodney join forces to remind Nicola and Simon that they love each other and Lesley is in fact to blame for Simon's losses. The two are initially defiant that their relationship is over but their parents are determined to get them back together. Meanwhile, at the Dingles, Emily is getting increasingly frustrated by the household's attitude to her rota but seeing that Debbie is upset by the end of her relationship with Andy agrees to do her chores for her. Daz pays Debbie a visit but is terrified to see Cain. Cain takes the opportunity to wind him up and a scared Daz sharply leaves. Debbie appears at the bottom of the stairs, seeing him run off and is suspicious of what Cain has said to him.

Debbie is determined to find out what has been going on and confronts Daz who reluctantly confesses that he stabbed Jimmy and that Cain beat Andy up during the fire. Debbie vows that Cain will not get away with it and Daz is worried about what will happen to him. Debbie confronts Cain about Andy's attack and is furious with him and she warns him off scaring Daz. However, Cain is having none of it and says if she doesn’t keep her mouth shut Daz will be going to prison. Meanwhile, Simon is planning to get a job so that he and Nicola are not just relying on her income. Their relationship seems to be improving as they bond over painting the house.

Cain is irritated when Jack arrives with Andy to take Sarah away for the morning. Later on in the day Cain bumps into Daz and Andy in the village. Cain is displeased to see Andy playing happy families and grabs him in a threatening manner. He is only put off when Daz and Jack interfere. Later again, Robert continues to seek his revenge on Andy and offers Cain a job at the garage. Dawn is frustrated to see that Scott is not responding to her affections and seems more comfortable in Kelly’s company. Meanwhile, Sadie bumps into Sam and he tells her he is going to be a dad. The intimate chat between the two friends causes Alice concern.

Robert is starting to wonder whether taking on Cain was a good idea as he is proving hard to control. Debbie visits Robert at the garage later to check up on her dad. Robert tells her Cain isn’t that bad, in an attempt to win her over. Debbie leaves feeling happy and Robert is satisfied that he might get what he wants from hiring Cain. On hearing that Dawn wants to cook Scott a special lunch, Kelly promptly goes to visit Scott and gets him to invite her along. Dawn realises what Kelly is up to and welcomes her with open arms. As this wasn’t the reaction Kelly had hoped for, she realises she will have to work harder to upset Dawn and sets about doing so. Meanwhile, Viv is disgusted to see Bob canoodling with Avril. Bob pulls away, trying to diffuse the situation, but Avril continues to try to wind Viv up.

However, Viv is later left lemon lipped when Avril manages to secure herself a place on the trip.

Dawn is furious about the phone call the previous night and when Kelly makes a dig at her, Dawn is unable to contain her aggression. She pulls Kelly to the floor by her hair and when Ethan intervenes he ends up being punched in the face! Ethan's interfering also gets him into trouble elsewhere, and when he tells the Bishop that Laurel and Ashley aren’t getting on, it suddenly dawns on him that he has betrayed his colleague and friend. Meanwhile, Terry is uninterested as Louise attempts to make conversation, and he responds to her small talk with impatience.

Kelly has her eye on Ethan and she joins him and Laurel for a drink. It's not long before Kelly notices that Ethan is fixated by Laurel and she manipulatively threatens to tell Ashley unless he is especially nice to her. Meanwhile, Louise is making every effort to put things right with Terry, but it's clear he isn’t interested. She is later forced to watch on as he and Dawn unite over their troubles and Dawn begins to wonder if she gave up on her relationship with Terry too soon. Elsewhere, Donna is frustrated when Marlon refuses to go out as he is busy brushing up his talents for the chef competition.

Louise is desperate to win back Terry and she invites him round to talk. She cooks him a romantic meal but her attempts to impress fall flat, and when she asks him for another chance, Terry tells her that he is disgusted by her proposition. Meanwhile, Kelly quickly realises that Ethan isn’t playing along with her games so she decides it's time to be more obvious. Ethan is stunned when she locks him in a car. Elsewhere, Donna resorts to a skimpy outfit to get Marlon’s attention but she doesn’t get the desired response. Marlon is more concerned with ‘Mack’ the carving knife and refuses to let anyone touch his lucky charm!

Feeling rejected, Louise takes out her anger on Dawn, but she soon realises that it's Matthew who should be bearing the brunt of her bad mood. She storms round to his office, but when he refuses to seem even vaguely bothered by her mood she takes things one step further by going to his home and hacking up his suits with a pair of scissors. Matthew later confronts Louise and locks her in the ladies’ toilets. Remembering the suffering that her ex-fiancé caused her, Louise is terrified and agrees to stay away from him. Elsewhere, Donna is feeling rejected by Marlon and starts to wonder if she is good enough for him. However, when Kelly tells her that she could never replace Tricia, her insecurities deepen. She begs Marlon for time alone and he eventually agrees to a picnic. Meanwhile, Kelly quizzes Laurel about Ethan’s single status and is delighted to find out that he is unattached. Laurel decides she likes the thought of Kelly and Ethan together.

As Marlon packs for his picnic with Donna, Bob complains that Viv has been badmouthing him to Avril. Marlon convinces him that it's only jealousy and then asks him to help him carry the picnic hamper. Donna is furious when her step-father stays for a beer and can’t believe it when her mother turns up as well. She is certain that it's all Marlon's fault. Over in the bar, Louise rushes to the back to avoid Matthew and it is clear that he relishes the power he has over her. Meanwhile, Jarvis complains about his contract with the Kings and decides to call a union meeting with his colleagues. Later that day, Carl invites Ivan into the office for a chat and warns him that Jarvis is putting the future of the whole team in jeopardy.

Viv thinks Marlon needs to get his priorities right and decides to get revenge on Donna’s behalf. Getting ready for Newcastle, Marlon realises Mack, his beloved knife, has gone missing. He accuses Donna, who is unable to convince Marlon of her innocence. Meanwhile, Steph shows her father the positive comments written in the book at the B&B and asks him to take it off the market so she can run it permanently. Alan isn’t sure so confides in Ethan.

A run-in with the law brings Marlon and Donna together. When Donna and Viv arrive in Newcastle to hand over Marlon's treasured knife, Mack, for the cooking competition, they are shocked to find they've managed to misplace it somewhere. Marlon and Donna go in search for it and finally find it at the Metro lost property office. Marlon jokingly threatens to kill Viv in front of police officers who take him seriously and lock him in a cell. Eventually they release Marlon who is now extremely late for the competition. Whilst rushing back Donna admits it was her mum who vindictively stole the knife so she'd have an excuse to come and see Bob. Marlon is furious causing Donna to call it a day on their relationship. Marlon is left to decide between Donna or the competition, he chooses Donna and proposes. Viv tries to win back her man by showing off her chef skills.

When it comes to Carl with the casting vote, he goes in favor - leaving Tom incredibly disappointed. Meanwhile, at the garage, Scott tells Cain that he is no longer needed. Max sees this as an opportunity to get back into his father's good books and heads up to the farm. Max returns and tells Tom that Sandra and Craig Briggs now own the land and Tom tells his son that he wants him to get their signatures on paper. Max clearly feels uncomfortable. Meanwhile, Val is in a state over the bailiffs and she shows Delilah the letter. Val packs her bags with the intention of doing a runner and despite Delilah's attempts to convince her to stay, she insists that she has no choice as she’ll never raise the cash. Later on, Max sees Sandra Briggs in the café and after turning on the charm he is thrilled when she invites him to the farm the following day to look at the calves. Daz arrives to say goodbye, desperate for a farewell kiss. Also, Zoe confirms to Effie that she is going to run away but is stunned when Effie offers to go with her and confesses that she has feelings for her.

Zoe fears that Callum won’t help her plan her escape if he finds out Effie is going with her. Effie confronts Zoe about keeping it a secret but they end up sharing a passionate kiss and head upstairs to bed. Back downstairs, Zoe announces to Callum that Effie is going with them as a nanny and, despite the shock, he has no choice but to accept it. Zoe's escape is planned and Effie suggests that it would be less suspicious if she travelled separately with the children in case they are caught by the police. Zoe agrees and it is decided that Effie and the kids will get a plane to Ireland and meet Zoe there. Elsewhere, after a call from Craig Briggs, Paddy and Max rush to the farm to find scores of their calves dying, with many already dead. Paddy digs out the prescription and can’t understand why he would have written such a high dosage. Max feels terrible.

Max pays Craig a visit and, confessing him and Paddy were at fault for the dead cattle, tentatively ‘suggests’ that his father may want to buy the land off them. Smelling a rat, Craig heads over to the vets’ and pushes Max up against a filing cabinet, telling him he knows what he's up to. Max goes and tells Tom what has happened and is shocked when Tom proudly tells him he's now a fully-fledged member of the family. Self-loathing, Max struggles to accept he's truly joined the family by his evil deeds. Elsewhere, Jack aggressively tells Zoe that she could have told them that she was selling Andy’s farm from under them. Zoe is dismissive but later goes to Jack's house to apologise. She admits she just wanted a quick sale and tells Jack that she's sure Rodney will make a better landlord than Tom.

After the death of their cattle, the Briggs’ are forced to sell their land to the Kings. Tom calls a meeting with the rest of the family and tells them that they no longer need to sell the haulage company. Tom is furious when his sons are reluctant to give him their backing, and he makes it clear that he is sick of them all. Over at the Vet's, Paddy struggles to treat a dog, having lost all confidence in his own ability. Max’s attempts to boost Paddy fail and he goes to The Woolpack to drown his sorrows. Elsewhere, Rodney and Paul laugh that they both have unwanted fans. Delphine the vineyard buyer is besotted with Rodney, and Aubrey the estate agent adores Paul. The father and son decide to have fun with their unwanted admirers!

Callum waits in a lay-by for a contact to pull in and present him with fake passports for Zoe, Effie and the two children. He is later stunned when he returns to Home Farm to find Zoe and Effie kissing and storms out with the documents before speeding off in his car. Zoe is distraught, knowing that her plan cannot work without him. Over in The Woolpack, Rodney brags about being the new owner of Home Farm. Sadie overhears and goes to congratulate him. She asks what he paid and when he tells her £3.5m she manipulatively says that Zoe was offering it for far less. Rodney is left thoughtful. Meanwhile, Tom takes his family to the field behind the Vet's where there is a huge billboard advertising the new development.

Zoe leaves a panic-stricken message on Callum’s phone and she is thankful when he eventually arrives home with the passports. Effie gets the kids together and they go to catch their plane, whilst Zoe and Callum head for the boat. They arrive at the marina in Ireland and Zoe waits with anticipation for Effie, Joseph and Jean. She is excited when the seaplane arrives but is stunned when Sadie steps out. Zoe is furious to learn that Sadie and Effie have set her up and that Jean is back at Home Farm. When she hears how much has been taken from her, Zoe catches Effie with a right-hook. Unwilling to be separated from her daughter, a distraught Zoe has no choice but to return home with Sadie. She is forced to sign over Home Farm to the Kings and is beside herself in the knowledge that she can’t escape the trial. Meanwhile, Max feels depressed after his first official working day at King & Sons and tells Robert that he regrets ever setting foot in Emmerdale.

Paddy refuses to respond to Zoe’s attempts of blackmail and so she is forced to attend court with no idea of what he plans to say. Scott is also aware that Paddy holds the cards to his future and follows him home. Scott pins the vet up against a wall and warns him not to cross him. As a final threatening gesture Scott knees Paddy in the groin and he falls to the floor. Elsewhere, Tom is thrilled to be the proud owner of Home Farm and is smug as he shares the news with his sons. Jimmy is stunned to hear that Sadie is responsible and he clearly feels uncomfortable. Meanwhile, Rodney goes to Home Farm to do some measuring up and is horrified when Callum informs him that it has been sold to Tom.

It's the day of the trial and Zoe puts on a brave face as Ashley comes over to look after Joseph and Jean. She hugs her daughter and nephew tight as she says goodbye, fearing that it could be the last time she sees them. As the court case commences, Paddy is pacing the floor outside. When the vet eventually takes to the stand, both Zoe and Scott watch with fear and the entire congregation are shocked by what he has to say. The jury give their verdict. Zoe is found not guilty, much to Scott's anger. Later, while drowning his sorrows in the Woolpack, Scott discovers from Betty that Zoe is leaving with the kids. He heads round to Home Farm, armed with a shotgun, and holds Zoe, Callum and the kids hostage, although he lets Joseph go straight afterwards.

The high emotions of the week become too much for Scott who finds himself involved in a fight with Paddy. Dawn tries to break it up but ends up being punched in the face. For once Scott's usually overprotective mother sees that her son is in the wrong. Viv tells him that from now on he is on his own. There is a knock on the door and Viv answers to two police officers. They tell Scott that he is under arrest for assault and as he is lead off he pleads with his mother to help him. Viv is unable to look him in the eye as he is dragged away. Meanwhile, Val decides chatting up a wealthy business man could be the answer to her money worries and she sashays over to a gentleman in the Woolpack. She is delighted when he takes her business card but she is completely unaware that he is a bailiff.

While Val is offering her furnishing services, she is completely unaware the bailiffs are bashing on her door. Eventually they catch up with her and demand the money. Elsewhere, Debbie agrees that Andy can look after Sarah, but when Robert discovers this he sets about ruining Andy's plans. Also, Alice struggles to eat her breakfast and as she gets up she begins to feel queasy and faints. Adam comes over to see her and says that she is anaemic and needs to increase her iron intake.

Debbie tells Cain that Sarah’s spending the day with Andy. However, when Cain sees Andy drowning his sorrows in the pub and finds out that Debbie blew him out, Cain becomes concerned. After sharing a passionate kiss with Robert, Debbie goes home. Meanwhile, Val is desperate for cash and goes to Rodney’s Antiques Barn to steal a handful of money. Paul and Danny are horrified when Rodney later accuses them of losing the missing cash and tells them that it will be docked from their wages. Also, Steph takes a B&B booking for Rodney's business associate, Delphine LaClair but Terry also takes a call and double books the room. Steph tries to cancel Delphine, but struggles to communicate with the client as she can only speak French!

Robert and Debbie tell a stunned Andy about their relationship but when Jack confronts Robert he denies he is seeing Debbie. Andy is adamant that Robert is lying and is determined to end to the bitter feud with his brother once and for all. Elsewhere, Paul and Danny are both gutted when Rodney docks their wages. Paul asks Val if she’ll have a word with his father for him and she guiltily agrees. Also, Steph is concerned about where the French guests are going to sleep. She plans to move Terry and Adam into Edna’s house and stay with Betty herself.

Andy tells Cain about Robert and Debbie in the hope of a strong reaction but Robert smoothly manages to convince Cain that Andy is simply stirring things up. Later on, Robert visits Debbie and tells her that it’d best if they cool things off, leaving her distraught. That evening Andy sees Cain and Robert having a drink together and tells Cain that he's thicker than he thought. As a fight breaks out, Robert goes outside and Debbie begs him to give her another chance. Spying Andy approaching he kisses Debbie prompting Andy to knock him to the floor. Andy makes it clear his brother has gone too far and threatens to kill him for what he has done. Meanwhile, Tom instructs Max to collect rent from one of his tenants and when he returns burdens him with a stack of paperwork. Max can’t bear it and skives off to get drunk. Seeing his distress, Paddy offers him his old job back at the Vet's.

After recent events, Jack makes it clear that Robert is unwanted in the village and is so keen for Robert to leave the village that he offers to buy the garage. Robert agrees and meets up with Debbie to ask her and Sarah to leave Emmerdale with him. Debbie is unsure but Robert tells her he loves her and seduces her into bed. Afterwards she agrees that she wants to be with him. Elsewhere, Max confronts his father, telling him that he's sick of being dragged into his sordid schemes after Tom asks him to bribe Councillor Ledbetter for planning permission. Later, Max bumps into Robert, who, having taken his father's words to heart, invites him to leave the village with him.

Robert argues with Jack, and Max falls out with Tom, leaving them both more determined than ever to flee the village. The boys become impatient as they wait at Wilson's corner for Debbie and the baby, unaware than Andy has stopped them en route and alerted Emily about Debbie's plans to runaway. Emily refuses to allow Debbie to abscond with Sarah and eventually the teenage mum decides to go without her daughter. Debbie meets Robert and explains that they’ll have to come back for the baby. Robert tells her that she's nothing without Sarah and a devastated Debbie runs off leaving Andy and Robert laying into one another.

Jack heads to the scene of the accident. Robert tells Jack what happened and Jack is furious at his two sons, especially Robert. Jack tells Robert to leave the village in order to avoid being arrested for manslaughter by suggesting that Andy swerved to avoid a flock of sheep. Meanwhile, the police break the news of Max's death to Tom and Jimmy. Tom is devastated and laments with Jimmy at the hospital that he cursed Max.

There are concerns over Alice’s health and Adam tells her that he is worried about her high level of white blood cells. Alice is terrified that she's got cancer and fears for the safety of her unborn child. Adam advises Alice to talk through the situation with Sam but she insists that she doesn’t want him to know. Meanwhile, in the wake of the village’s bad news, Ashley suggests cancelling his working trip to Israel. Ethan and Laurel persuade him to go.

Val is becoming increasingly desperate for cash to repay her debts and when she sees the cash box in the Antiques Barn, she can’t resist grabbing a handful of notes and stuffing them in her handbag. Val panics when she notices the CCTV camera, and heads to the office to attempt to record over the tape. Later that day, Danny accusingly tells Paul that the takings aren’t tallying up and Paul goes off to inspect the CCTV footage. He is stunned when he notices there's a jump cut and suddenly sees Val. Meanwhile, Dawn tries desperately to keep the garage afloat by asking Cain to clean cars. Jack later suggests that they close it down for a while, but Dawn won’t hear of it, determined they can sort something out. Elsewhere, Matthew and Carl arrive home and are devastated to hear about Max's death.

Paul confronts Val about the missing cash and he tells her that if she doesn’t tell Rodney, he will. Val tries to explain to Paul that Jimmy Pepper was demanding money and that's why she stole the cash, but he tells her straight that if she wants his help she has to tell Rodney the truth. That evening, in The Woolpack, Val approaches Rodney ready to confess, but Rodney now believes it was Paul who took the money. Val tells an angry Rodney that he shouldn’t be making wild accusations about who stole the money, but fails to own up to her crime. Meanwhile, Simon tells Nicola he has a job interview that afternoon but is evasive as to what the job is. Simon later announces to Nicola and Lesley that he has got a job working for King & Sons, but they burst out laughing when he says that he’ll be their bin man.

Paul is annoyed that Val still hasn’t come clean, but unaware that he is now in the frame, he lends his mother the money that she needs. Val tries to sneak it back into the till at the Antiques Barn, but when Rodney catches her, she lies that Paul needed the cash because he was tricked into lending money to a friend who has fled the country. Later on, Rodney confronts Paul about the theft and seeing how furious her son is, Val is forced to confess all. Diane is outraged by Val's behaviour and decides to call the police. Elsewhere, Nicola has trouble coming to terms with Simon’s job as a bin man and the couple have a blazing row when she condemns him for shaming her. Simon brands her a snob and storms off in disgust.

Val is released on police bail and tells Eric she’ll be pleading guilty in court the following week in the hope of a minimised sentence. As Paul is able to forgive his mother, Diane begins to wonder if she did the right thing reporting Val to the police. Meanwhile, Nicola is still annoyed that Simon misled her about his job and begs Rodney to give him a loan to fund his business venture instead. Rodney agrees but Simon refuses the gesture, realising that Nicola is behind it and not wanting to accept charity. Elsewhere, Viv has transformed her front room into wedding central but is annoyed when Donna doesn’t turn up for the lunchtime wedding summit.

Donna tearfully admits to Bob that she is having doubts about the wedding. Bob is aghast but covers for her when Marlon enters. Meanwhile, Ivan suggests to Simon that he move in as a lodger to help with his financial problems. Simon agrees but Nicola is later annoyed that he has taken the decision without consulting her first. Elsewhere, Adam insists that Alice must tell Sam the truth about her health problems as she will need his support during her tests.

Donna decides that she can’t go through with the wedding and goes to tell Marlon. When she sees her fiancé, she bursts into tears and realises that she was about to make a terrible mistake. Marlon assumes they are tears of joy and afterwards Donna assures Bob she's seen the error of her ways and does want to marry Marlon. Meanwhile, Val leaves for court and Paul asks Diane if she's prepared to shoulder the guilt if Val is sent down. Diane waits with anticipation for news of the verdict. Elsewhere, Sam finds Alice crying and she finally opens up to him and tells him about the cancer. He is sad that she couldn’t tell him initially, but quickly realises that the real issue is that he could lose Alice and the baby.

As Alice has her scan she can barely bring herself to look at the screen but Sam takes comfort in the nurse's assurance that everything seems fine. Afterwards, Alice nervously waits with Sam and Emily for her haematology tests. On the way home Sam is horrified when he runs over his prize cockerel and becomes convinced it is a bad omen for Alice's health. Ethan is nervous as he is about to conduct his first funeral and he feels the pressure to give Max a good send off. After the funeral, Andy arrives to pay his respects to Max, but Tom furiously tells him to leave. Jimmy tells Tom some home truths - that Max was leaving to get away from him, that Max killed the Briggs' cows for him and that Tom must be to blame for Max's death.

Jimmy tries to apologise to Tom about things he said yesterday. Tom's still angry. Jimmy thinks Max's death was an accident, but Tom insists that Andy must have something to do with it. Sadie confirms his suspicions about the Sugden brother row, having overheard village gossip. Meanwhile, troubled Andy confides in Jack about his run-in with Tom. Later Andy is shocked to find Tom at the front door to evict his son's killer. Tom begins throwing furniture out as Andy calls Jack for help. Jack tells the others to leave so that he can have a head to head with Tom. Tom vows revenge, threatening to take Jack's son from him but Jack is quick to tell Tom that he knows about Max killing the Briggs' calves and accuses Tom of selling Max's principles for money.

Laurel worries that Ethan should get out more and promises to plan something special for the weekend. When Betty points out to Laurel that all Ethan needs to cheer him up is a good woman, Laurel invites Kelly to join them on Sunday. Meanwhile, Diane flips during a busy shift in the pub due to her frustrations over Victoria, Val’s theft and staff troubles at the pub. Louise returns home and is stunned to find Diane with her head in her hands. Elsewhere, Paddy is mortified when Jo catches him on a chat room website. Jo realises he's embarrassed and tells him that lots of people use the internet to meet people. Curious, she uses the computer in the café to see who Paddy is talking to. She finds Paddy's alias and decides to put a smile on his face by sending him some messages.

Whilst playing Trivial Pursuit, Laurel tells Ethan that he and teammate Kelly make the perfect match. Ethan finally loses patience with the match-making and in his desperation to reveal his true feelings to Laurel he seizes the moment and kisses her. Elsewhere, Paddy is feeling glum after not having had a response from ‘Fireblade’, who he met the previous day in an internet chat room. Jo overhears and feeling sympathetic sends a reply. After a few messages Paddy feels reckless and invites her on a date. In a panic, Jo tells him she lives in Lisbon. Also, Matthew tells Jimmy that's he just sold the haulage yard for profit. Jimmy reckons they should have sold it ages ago when they had the chance and it's a shame it took Max’s death for Tom to see sense. Matthew can’t believe his insensitivity and suggests he stay well away from Tom.

After having his advances from Laurel rejected, Ethan gets drunk on the communion wine. Kelly calls into the church and after finding out what's wrong, the pair end up kissing. After being caught by Laurel, Ethan brands Kelly a whore, claiming he only slept with her because he couldn’t have Laurel. Meanwhile, after talking to Danny, Jo decides to confess the truth to Paddy but she returns to work to find that he's thrown caution to the wind and booked a flight to Portugal to meet ‘Fireblade’. However, Paddy lies to Marlon that the holiday is to visit his cousin Jason. Also, Len and Pearl decide to play Val and Nicola off against each other when Val approaches the couple to leave Nicola and work for her instead.

Kelly bitchily let slip to Edna that Ethan and Laurel have been carrying on behind Ashley’s back. Edna then informs the Bishop but Ethan saves his own neck by saying that Laurel threw herself at him. Laurel is horrified as Ethan tells her she has brought it all on herself as they would have been good together. Elsewhere, when Sadie and Matthew arrive at The Woolpack, Aunt Phyllis comments to Jimmy that she always knew the pair would end up together. Later Jimmy asks Sadie and Matthew what’s going on but Sadie tells him not to be paranoid. Meanwhile, Jo feels too cowardly to tell Paddy that ‘Fireblade’ is a hoax but wants to save him huge disappointment in Lisbon. She decides to send him a message telling him not to bother coming.

After Jimmy catches Ethan being aggressive with Kelly he whisks her off to a nearby hotel. Kelly becomes fed up of Jimmy being all emotional about being pushed out by his family and suggests they have some fun in the bubble bath. Meanwhile, Emily finds it hard to believe that Laurel would get involved with Ethan but Nicola points out that Laurel has been acting very cagey. Also, returning from Granny Clegg’s, Belle is sent home from school for fighting. Lisa and Zak give her a telling off but Belle gives them the run around. Belle talks to Sam about reprimanding children and Alice is chuffed to hear Sam's take on this.

Sadie bumps into Kelly, who is dressed up to the nines for another rendezvous with Jimmy. After Kelly makes a remark about Jimmy, Sadie confides in Matthew that something must be going on between the pair. After calling Jimmy's phone to hear Kelly answer, Sadie rants to Matthew, who suspects she is jealous. Sadie assures him her reaction is just because Jimmy should still be grieving for Max, not sleeping with the village bike.

Ashley informs Laurel that Ethan is insisting that she came onto him. He goes on to say that he understands it must be difficult with the Bishop putting things on hold. Laurel is incredulous and cannot believe Ashley doubts her and he is stunned when she promptly ends their relationship. As Laurel leaves with her bags, Ethan watches from the B&B and feels a mixture of satisfaction and regret.

A distraught Ethan delivers his sermon to the village but shocks the congregation by confessing that he is in love with Laurel. The curate admits that he has been misinforming the Bishop about Ashley and Laurel's relationship in order to keep them apart, and he leaves the village in shame. Ashley apologises for ever doubting Laurel but she is still hurt that he distrusted her. The Bishop tells them that in the light of Ethan's confession, he gives his permission for them to marry. Ashley gets down on one knee and proposes. Over at Home Farm, the Dingles go fishing and Shadrach is positive that he has seen something big and shiny lurking in the depths of the lake. Zak wishfully thinks that they might have struck gold.

Sam is consumed with fear that Alice may have cancer. Sam and Alice are distracted and in a somber mood as the family looks for treasure underwater. Unable to cope with the weight of keeping Alice's secret from his father, the young couple decide to tell the family their terrifying news. The Dingles are shocked to the core but vow to support Alice as she faces the results of her test the following day.

The Dingle clan wait with baited breathe at the oncology clinic as Alice collects her cancer test results. Zak tries to console Sam as he fears the worst, but Alice finally emerges and gladly announces that she has been given the all clear. Meanwhile, Adam and Isla Forsythe finalise their divorce and after signing the papers Adam warmly assists his ex-wife to her car.

Adam and Steph go for a meal in The Woolpack and when Betty joins them, Adam politely states that he and Steph are enjoying a date. Steph is taken aback and when they later retire to the B&B she is shocked when Adam kisses her neck. Steph warns him off with a knife, leaving Adam terrified and Steph devastated by her own rage. Over at the Dingles', Debbie is upset that her family have forgotten her sixteenth birthday. When Lisa finally remembers, she organises a party, but Debbie is unimpressed by her efforts and complains that Sarah always takes the limelight from her. Meanwhile, Tom is eager to get his family back together and asks his sons to live with him at Home Farm. Jimmy upsets his father by telling him that he can’t think of anything worse than living under the same roof as Sadie.

Adam tries to talk to Steph about the previous night but her embarrassment causes her to be dismissive and he is left frustrated by her barriers. After several attempts to get to the bottom of Steph's behaviour, he respects her wishes when she asks him to leave her alone. Adam's reluctance to fight is proof in Steph's mind that he can’t really be interested in her. Over at the Post Office, Daz dares Kayleigh and Victoria to steal something. Viv catches them red-handed and phones Martin and Louise.

Adam tells an astonished Steph that he’ll be checking out today as he feels their friendship and chance of romance has been jeopardised. Covering her true feelings, Steph agrees it's the right decision for him to leave. Later on, Steph realises that she can’t let the first man that she has ever cared for disappear and she bites the bullet, telling him that she has feelings for him. Elsewhere, Betty is thrilled when Kathy leaves her a message saying that she and Seth are returning to Emmerdale to celebrate his birthday. Betty spreads the good news and the villagers anticipate Seth's arrival. Meanwhile, Del tries to convince Carl that she has true feelings for him, but he states that, in light of what has happened, she has definitely blown her chances.

Betty and Laurel are waiting at the airport for Seth and Kathy’s flight to land, but as passengers disembark the flight, there is no sign of him. Betty is concerned when there is a tannoy announcement asking her to the information desk. She is ushered into an office where she sees Kathy. Her tearstained face says it all as Kathy confirms that Seth died from a heart attack during the flight, just an hour from home. They head back to the village and Betty bravely announces the news in the pub. She orders a drink and raises a toast to Seth. Adam invites Steph for a drink at The Woolpack but she reminds him that she wants to take things slowly. It is clear they are both happy to have things back to normal. Meanwhile, Delilah is attempting to secure the curtain contract. It is doubly tricky because Carl knows she fancies him and enjoys watching her squirm. He eventually gives in and lets her have the Home Farm contract.

Betty appears breezy and busies herself with funeral arrangements. The locals offer their support but Betty refuses to be down about Seth. Kathy, Laurel, Edna and Alan are all worried about their friend. Kathy makes many attempts to talk to Betty but is always interrupted. Eventually she sits her down and tells a stunned Betty that Seth had been ill for a while and was heading back to Betty to die. Kathy goes on to say that he had left her very specific instructions as to what he wanted at his funeral. She reads out a list that includes an echo friendly coffin, no hats, food poached by Alan and fine malt to be supplied by Eric.

The villagers are busy preparing for Seth’s funeral but Betty remains adamant that she will not be going. A crate of booze arrives care of Kim Tate. Meanwhile, Betty seeks sanctuary in Seth's hide, where she chides him for leaving her. As if answering her, Biff arrives and asks Betty why she isn’t ready for the crematorium. Biff explains Seth would only ever have Betty's best interests at heart and surely stayed away so long because he wanted to spare Betty having to see him suffer.

Debbie snogs Daz in front of Kayleigh to stop her bothering him. Kayleigh is devastated. Louise is comforting and arranges a girly night, to cheer up Kayleigh, assuring her that the right boy will come along. Kayleigh asks Louise some awkward questions about sex, which Louise dodges. Martin arrives and is taken aback by his daughter covered in make up. Louise fears she's offended Martin again.

Louise takes Victoria to her karate class and gets roped into joining in. She is paired up with Martin and although they pretend to be angry with one another, it's clear that they enjoy the physical contact. Victoria and Kayleigh blurt out that Louise and Martin fancy each other. They are both embarrassed but Martin bites the bullet and confirms to Louise that he likes her and asks her out for lunch the following day. Nicola arranges for Laurel to see a top dressmaker but is disappointed when Laurel fails to show any enthusiasm. When the dressmaker leaves, Nicola rebukes Laurel for embarrassing her, but Laurel tells her that planning the wedding doesn’t seem right at the moment as she is grieving for Seth. Lisa is furious when Debbie’s headmistress phones and informs her that Debbie has been wagging school.

Laurel decides that her love for Ashley is all that matters and that she doesn’t need Nicola’s frills at the wedding. Both Laurel and Ashley agree that they want a simple wedding and despite Nicola's regret, Laurel insists it's her and Ashley's day, not Nicola's. As Ashley heads off to work, Laurel flippantly wishes they could get married tomorrow. It's the day of Seth’s burial and Betty is being evasive, insisting she’d rather say goodbye to Seth on her own, whilst the committal takes place. Ashley can’t fathom why Betty would miss it, but Betty has her own reasons. The villagers speculate about Betty's whereabouts as Seth's eco-coffin is buried. And then, in the absence of a planned wake, they troupe off to The Woolpack to raise a glass to the master poacher himself. Betty, Laurel and the Dingles eventually join the group. Ashley spots they all have muddy shoes, but agrees it's best he doesn’t ask any questions. With everybody in attendance, the villagers raise a final toast to Seth.

After Ashley announces their banns in church, Laurel shocks him by declaring that she wants to marry him that day. After a bit of persuasion Ashley agrees and says that he wants the bishop to do the service so Laurel goes off to find him. The bishop is dubious about the sudden wedding but on hearing Laurel say that Seth’s death has taught her to live for the moment, he agrees. Nicola allows Laurel to drive the bishop to Emmerdale in the two-seater, leaving her desperately trying to get a taxi.

Kelly makes her way to Jimmy's for their date and bumps into Sadie, who takes delight in telling her that Jimmy is only using her to get over his grief and will drop her when he's bored. Kelly later admits to Jimmy that she's worried he is ashamed of her and asks him if they can go public. Meanwhile, Ashley is still furious about Sandy turning up out of the blue and calls him a cab, not wanting to hear his tales. Laurel insists that he tell her about his history and after divulging some information she feels there's more to this than Ashley is prepared to admit. Also, Viv tells Lesley that she's put the prices up in the shop to raise money for her wedding. She is determined that her wedding will be better than Laurel's. Lesley is outraged, but knowing that she can't afford to lose her job, she is forced to keep quiet.

Rodney is feeling downhearted after a knock back from Toni. He comes across an equally unhappy Lesley, who has been sacked for admitting to customers that the hiked up prices are to pay for Viv’s wedding. He joins her for a few drinks and as they are both feeling down, the drunken pair get carried away. Elsewhere, Sadie tells Matthew that she's been doing some research on the net and found that one of the agencies Kelly said she worked for went bust years ago. Taking no notice of Matthew's advice she hires a private detective, Colin Matthews and asks him to get her some dirt on Kelly. Also, Paddy and Toni continue to dupe Danny and Jo into thinking that they are a couple. Toni lies to Danny that she's been a bit deceitful as the loaded vet was due to meet a woman from a chat room. Both Danny and Jo fall for it hook, line and sinker and Jo worries that her joke has gone too far.

After a night of passion, Lesley proudly reports to Simon that she and Rodney are together. Simon confronts Rodney, who admits that last night was a drunken mistake and Simon orders him to put Lesley straight. He tells Lesley it shouldn’t have happened but is shocked when she agrees. Meanwhile, Kelly is horrified when, after some help from Sadie, a Mrs Connors walks in to The Woolpack and announces Kelly didn’t have a modelling contract but had posed topless. She also makes it clear that everything Kelly has financially was leeched from her own husband. Also, Toni is continuing with the game that she's using Paddy and flaunts a pricey looking engagement ring in front of Jo. Jo flips and accuses Paddy of being too silly to realise Toni's a gold-digger and blurts out that Toni isn’t Fireblade. Paddy laughs that the joke is on her because he found out days ago.

Rodney is horrified to learn that Lesley still hasn’t got the message that he's not interested when he discovers that she has declared herself his significant other for an upcoming council do. That evening Rodney goes to the pub and is about to come clean with Lesley when an opportunistic Kelly grabs his arm and says she's going to the council do with him, prompting Lesley to flee in a flood of tears. Rodney is pleased to have solved his dilemma as he spends the evening with Kelly. Simon later gives Rodney a piece of his mind and clouts him for treating his mother so badly. Rodney feels awful. Meanwhile, at the council do a drunk Councillor Ledbetter is complaining that his wife is away and quick thinking Val responds by saying that she's heard that the stiff looking new Mayor Angela, would love Ledbetter to loosen her up. Eric and Val watch in amusement as Ledbetter makes an outrageous pass at an extremely unimpressed Angela, who, unbeknownst to him, is a lesbian!

Eric is desperate to step into Ledbetter's shoes and sets about schmoozing the Mayor. Angela says she would welcome the idea of Eric sitting on the committee if it weren't for the fact that his partner is currently facing a criminal conviction. Eric's devastated when Angela gives him an ultimatum - Val or the committee. The village realise that Rodney and Kelly are an item. Paul is disgusted when Kelly comes downstairs having spent the night with Rodney.

Having been told that Val’s court case may affect his chances of getting on the planning committee, Eric sheepishly goes to see Val and tells her that their relationship is over. When Val reacts badly, he tries to appease her by suggesting that they just pretend to have fallen out instead. Elsewhere, Steph has a glint in her eye as she tells Adam that people seem to be getting the wrong impression about their relationship. They discuss arranging a day at the races and Adam asks if it would be as friends or as something else. Meanwhile, it becomes clear that there is a growing attraction between Dawn and Danny.

Steph and Adam are disappointed when their day out at the races is cancelled due to rain. They agree that they should continue to make the most of the day and Adam leans in for a kiss, but they are interrupted by Val who steals Adam's attention with a long tale of woe. An irate Steph later then threatens Val not to mess things up for her, viciously grabbing her hair and warning her to stay away from the doctor.

Steph becomes increasingly possessive over Adam and when he offers to drive Val to Hotten, she decides that locking him in his room is the only way to keep them apart. As Adam bangs and shouts to be let out, Steph realises what she has done and runs out in humiliation. Steph hates herself for losing control and later returns and quietly unlocks the door. Adam patiently asks her what is going on and Steph finally opens up to the doctor. Steph tells him about the way she treated her father and her jealously over his relationship with Shelley. Meanwhile, Jo plays Cupid and leaves Dawn and Danny alone over lunch. Danny goes in for the kill and kisses Dawn, but a phone call from Scott ruins the moment and Dawn is left frustrated when Danny tells her that she needs to deal with Scott before anything more can happen between them.

With Steph’s words from the previous day looming heavily on Adam’s mind, he tries to get her to open up about her difficulties with Alan and suggests she contact Shelley. Steph stonewalls him. Later he tells Alan that Steph is very distressed about what happened last year and asks him if he could bring himself to offer his forgiveness. Alan is furious at Adam's interference and as he shouts he clutches his chest in pain. He is soon rushed to hospital. Lesley remains devastated over Rodney's rejection of her and new relationship with Kelly.

Val stands in court and says that she is one of life's victims. She goes on to give a sob story of her life including being beaten by her father and bringing up Paul on her own. On top of trying to get the sympathy vote, she pulls out a wad of cash and says that she is going to return all of the stolen money. Diane is clearly disgusted with her sister. Elsewhere, Steph is nervous about visiting her father in hospital, but when she eventually does she is horrified to learn that Adam has been questioning him about the past. Steph returns to the B&B and asks the doctor what he said to Alan to upset him. Adam insists that he was only trying to help but she tells him that his interference isn’t wanted.

Jack suggests to Diane that she end her feud with Val, pointing out that she has tried to put things right by returning the money. Diane doesn’t think this is enough but she is left thoughtful when Victoria reminds her that Val stood by Diane when they thought she was going to die. Diane later apologies to her sister and offers to let her stay at The Woolpack. Val declines her offer, determined to stand on her own two feet. Over at the B&B, Adam plays Steph at her own game and locks her in a bedroom in an attempt to force her to talk.

Steph wishes that she hadn't told Adam about her past, saying that all it has done has made her feel helpless. She tells Adam that she wants him out of her life and asks him to pack his bags. Adam chases Steph as she storms out of the B&B. He calms her down and Steph says he doesn't have to leave if he doesn't want to be that whatever they had is over but Adam insists Steph must talk to Alan. Later that day, Steph goes to visit Alan at Betty's house as he has just returned from hospital. They talk about the past and Alan admits that Steph was a very difficult child. Steph comments that Terence was the favourite and that he received all of the love. Alan is astounded at how strongly Steph feels about this and is protective of his son when Steph says that Terence was a bully. Alan says that he feels it's the other way around as Steph put Terence into hospital after hitting him with a brick.

Steph tries to see her father, but he wants nothing to do with her. Betty shames her over the damage she's done to her father. When Steph realises that he won't listen to her, she tells Alan that Terence didn’t really rape her and that she was lying yesterday. Alan is appalled that she could lie about something so serious but she insists that she wanted to make him listen. She says that Terence did bully her but confesses that she has exaggerated the truth. Alan goes off, needing time to think. Tom’s PR event gets underway and he gives a speech to the sceptical locals assuring them that there will be no major changes at Home Farm. Later, Sadie and Jimmy’s bickering gets to Tom and he storms off to be alone. Sadie finds him and he pours out his heart, claiming that his success is worth nothing because he has never been so lonely in his life. As Sadie comforts him, Tom tells her he loves her and kisses her. Jimmy sees the kiss from the hallway and is disgusted. Sadie pulls away, rushes out and catches up with Jimmy, who calls her a whore. Sadie swears that Tom came onto her but he is convinced she is after him for money and status.

The atmosphere is frosty in the Kings office and Jimmy can't help himself from making snide comments about Tom and Sadie. As they pack Christmas hampers at the Village Hall, Pearl notices Jarvis is deep in thought and asks if he is thinking about Freda. Jarvis replies that if he was it would make the day the same as every other day for many years and asks her to mind her own business. Pearl says he will regret it if he doesn't speak to Freda but Jarvis ignores her. Later the dance gets underway and Jarvis freezes when he sees Freda walk in.

Having discovered the truth about the Kings’ involvement with the dead calves, Paddy doesn’t know what to do for the best. Going to the police will mean the Briggs lose their farm, but if he doesn’t he’ll be risking the reputation of his own business. Meanwhile, Jarvis is still in shock over Freda’s proposition. Convinced that his so-called friends set him up, Jarvis packs up and decides to leave the village. However, after a ticking off from Edna, Jarvis confesses his true feelings for Freda.

After almost being caught out by Terry at Home Farm, Sadie and Matthew arrange to meet at a B&B for a secret rendezvous. After realising that he came to the same place during his affair with Louise, Sadie feels used and angry. Matthew insists he loves Sadie. Meanwhile, Ashley is shocked when he receives a call from Jasmine’s school, informing him that she has been suspended for being drunk at a party. She returns to the village in shame and is grounded by a disgruntled Ashley. Daz reveals that Jasmine's grandfather is in the village. Elsewhere Paddy’s reputation is still in tatters.

Paddy is called out to a job, only to find Hari has set it up as a PR stunt to improve his reputation. When he finds it working, he begins to think more seriously about Hari's suggestion that they go into partnership together. Later that day, Paddy returns Tom’s blood money, but feeling under attack, Tom pushes the cash back. Meanwhile, Matthew sets about proving to Sadie that his feelings for her are genuine and tells her that he thinks they should tell Tom the truth about their relationship. However, after Paddy's harsh words they find Tom in a mess, upset by his guilt over his son's death. As Sadie comforts him, he admits he cannot cope with the amount of stress the company causes him. Elsewhere, Dawn struggles with balancing her relationship with Danny and friendship with Scott.

Wasting little time, Sadie impresses Matthew when she reveals she has already put a plan into action regarding Tom’s retirement. Sadie's plan works when Helen suggests Tom enjoy his retirement, reminding him his wife would have wanted him to enjoy his twilight years. Tom agonises over his future and what it means for the business. Meanwhile, Ashley reluctantly allows Jasmine to spend time with Sandy, but is later furious when he finds them in the pub, wrongly assuming that Sandy has bought the underage girl alcohol. With Jimmy still in the frame, Sadie knows that Matthew needs to up his game. Later, Matthew and Sadie think they may have witnessed Jimmy seal his own fate when Greg's tipper truck collides into Tricia's tree and in front of half of the village, Greg berates Jimmy's negligence for the accident. Edna and Terry are horrified to find that Sandy has made himself at home at Holdgate Farm and when he refuses to leave, claiming squatters’ rights, they are forced to inform Ashley. The vicar is outraged when his father remains adamant that he's staying put and he instructs Terry to turn off the water, certain that Sandy will have to leave when he gets thirsty. Meanwhile, Tom worries when Jimmy doesn’t turn up for work and he is grateful when Sadie tries to calm him down. Matthew feels guilty when Tom voices his doubts that Jimmy will return, and is struck by Sadie's callousness when she admits that she would rather her ex-husband never came back. Elsewhere, Rodney offers to replace Tricia’s tree, and suggests that for the time being they put a big Christmas tree in its place.

Terry warns Ashley that he will call the police if Sandy does not emerge from Holdgate Farm soon. Ashley fears his reputation in the village is at stake and resorts to letting Sandy come to live with him. Back in the village, the father and son have a heart to heart. On the phone, Chas, who has clearly been told about Carl and Del, informs Carl that she has a new man. Del tries to ignore her feelings for Carl whilst she comforts him, but he drunkenly makes a pass at her. Elsewhere Dawn feels guilty about Scott’s decision to leave and not only offers to let him stay but agrees to keep Danny out of their home until he has had his tag removed.

Carl confronts Del about the events of the night before and despite how he feels about Chas he asks her to make a go of things. Meanwhile, Ashley tells Laurel he has buried his anger towards his father but continues to find somewhere else for him to live. Jasmine is shocked to find out her grandfather is being kicked out so close to Christmas.

Carl's rescue mission goes disastrously wrong. Their trip to win Chas back doesn't begin well when the car runs out of petrol but a determined Del flags down Pearl and begs her for a lift. When Del explains to Pearl where they are going, Pearl looks worried but Del convinces her she knows exactly what she is doing. Arriving at the barracks the sentry refuses them access. A few minutes later they spot a mini bus leaving the barracks heading to a formal function. On the bus with her fellow soldiers is Private Chas Dingle. Del announces they will go in pursuit.

Del visits Chas in hospital and nobly states that despite her best attempts, Carl only has eyes for her. But Chas doesn't want to hear it and an annoyed Del tells her she doesn't deserve a man like Carl and goes to leave. Chas stops her, wanting to know if her and Carl had slept together. Meanwhile, when Adam tentatively raises the subject of counselling an annoyed Steph insists that she doesn't want to discuss her problems with him or anyone else. Also, Eric boasts to Val that he has rushed the Christmas light licence through the council eager to rub Rodney's nose in it. Val marvels at Eric's work and later seizes an opportunity to scoff at Rodney. Rodney vows to Kelly that he will wipe the smile off both of their faces.

Betty lets Steph into the secret that she is trying to track down Terence as a surprise for Alan. However she is left perplexed when Steph panics and leaves. Alone at the B&B, Steph's terror at the thought of coming face to face with her abuser takes over and she hits the bottle. Adam returns home to find Steph drinking vodka, with pills in her hand. Meanwhile, at a christening meeting things quickly descend into a slanging match with rows over Sarah's middle name, christening gown and hymns. Debbie remains silent until she can take no more and leaves. Elsewhere, Val is up to her devious ways when she happily swaps the pensioners’ expensive wine for custard creams. Rodney looks on suspiciously.

Not standing for any talk of abuse, Alan tells Adam that the only reason Steph is anxious about Terence's return is because he will expose her lies. Adam urges Alan that bringing Terence back into the equation will be bad news, however Alan seethes at Adam's impertinence. Meanwhile, Debbie is nervous when she returns home to find Cain with Sarah but he lies calmly saying that Emily didn't feel too well. He insists it is not a problem as he wants to be a more hands-on granddad from now on. Wondering what Cain is up to Debbie is unsettled and asks if she can have a night out. He agrees through gritted teeth and is left holding the baby.

Emily confesses to Paul that she feels guilty for allowing Debbie and Sarah to grow apart. Meanwhile, Cain struggles to understand why Debbie has not yet bonded with Sarah. Much to Debbie's disappointment he announces he intends to spend the day with the baby. Elsewhere, Steph struggles to cope with the possibility that her brother may return to the village. Adam reassures her it is unlikely. Meanwhile, after Rodney snaps at Kelly, saying that she only ever takes and never gives, she is determined to prove him and the village wrong.

Tired of her interfering and blaming her for the rift between Debbie and Sarah, Cain packs up Emily’s belongings and forces her to leave. After hearing the news, Debbie desperately tries to stop her. A distressed Debbie admits to Emily that she doesn’t love Sarah the way Emily does. Debbie blurts out a shock proposal that leaves them both stunned. Meanwhile, Sam is overjoyed when Alice returns. Alice admits she was wrong but explains her fears about being pushed into giving up on her baby. After Alice apologises for any worry she may have caused, she and Sam resolve to face whatever the future holds together.

As the Dingles prepare for Sarah’s christening, a distraught Debbie is upset after Cain has driven Emily away. However, she is relieved when Emily arrives in time for the christening. Emily manages to discreetly make it clear to Debbie that she is only back for Sarah. After the ceremony, Debbie makes Andy kiss the baby goodbye which he does despite being puzzled by Debbie's behaviour. Debbie manages to say an emotional goodbye to Sarah as Emily and the baby leave in a taxi. Elsewhere, after Sarah's christening, Alice worries that due to her cancer she may not be around for the christening of her own child. Her worries lead to a shock marriage proposal to Sam.

As everyone celebrates the christening in The Woolpack, a devastated Daz is left to break the news to everyone in the pub that baby Sarah has gone. Cain reacts violently, appalled Zak and Lisa both contemplate their failure as parents, and a heartbroken Andy blames Daz for allowing Emily to leave. Andy, Daz and Jack frantically search for Emily and the baby but are left distraught by what they find. Meanwhile, Alice is upset when Debbie brands her selfish, questioning how Sam will cope if she dies. In fury, Alice slaps Debbie hard across the face. Later Alice has a heart to heart with Diane which leaves her feeling more positive about her future.

As Lisa heads off to visit Granny Clegg, and the rest of the Dingles celebrate Christmas in The Woolpack, Belle is left in the care of Shadrach. When Daz calls round with Spike the ferret, Belle is intrigued by the animal. As drunk Shadrach sleeps, Belle lets the ferret out and follows him outside. When Daz realises she is missing he tracks her down but a frightened Belle runs away from him and terrified, she slips and falls down a mine shaft. As Daz panics and tries to help her he loses his footing and also becomes trapped. Meanwhile, Cain is still angry at Debbie and unwilling to forgive her for giving away his grandchild. Whereas Zak reminds Debbie how much she is loved by the Dingles and after seeing her devastation he reluctantly forgives her and tries to understand.

Lisa returns from Granny Clegg’s on Christmas morning full of festive joy until the hungover Dingles admit they thought Belle was with her. The family begin to frantically search for missing Belle and Lisa calls the police. Zak remembers Sandy befriending Belle at the christening and goes on the rampage to find him. As accusations fly around the village, Zak interrupts the Christmas morning church service to beg everyone to help find his little girl. A formal search of the area gets underway but when Zak learns that Daz is also missing, his suspicion leads to fury and he launches himself at Jack.

Having returned to the Kings’, Jimmy gets a shock when Helen admits that she and Sadie have been working together to convince Tom to retire. Jimmy bitterly reveals the discovery to Matthew, warning him he will be pushed out next as Sadie is on a mission to win charge of the business. Matthew covers but decides to test Sadie by asking how she would feel if they left the business to Jimmy and did a runner together. Sadie's reaction leaves Matthew thinking that Jimmy is right but later Sadie turns up unexpectedly with her bags packed and agrees to run away if it's what he wants. Meanwhile, Nicola arrives home from Christmas in Scarborough to find Ivan has also returned from spending Christmas with his family up North.

With Matthew due to take control of the business the following day, he and Sadie agree that they will have to wait a bit longer before announcing they are together, to avoid suspicion. Later, Jimmy returns home and picks up on a moment of intimacy between Matthew and Sadie. As the realisation hits him that they are an item, Jimmy is left humiliated. He is quick to tell Tom of his discovery but Tom is convinced he is being paranoid.

As Tom prepares to hand over the business to Matthew, he can’t get Jimmy’s suspicions out of his head. The official handover gets underway but is interrupted by the owner of the guest house that Sadie and Matthew frequented. Jimmy smugly asks her to confirm the affair but when she can’t and Jimmy realises in horror that Sadie has scuppered his plans. When Tom stalls, Matthew fears all is lost but Sadie refuses to be beaten. She finds Tom and tries to manipulate him into believing that Jimmy is lying, but Tom claims she's been trying to rip his family apart from day one.

Sadie suggests to Matthew that perhaps they would be best cutting their losses and leaving Emmerdale for good, but Matthew is adamant that they should stay and fight. Tom initially refuses to see Matthew but is persuaded by Carl to change his mind, although he still refuses to allow Sadie into the office. Tom demands Matthew explain himself to them all. Matthew claims that all he did was fall in love. Later Jimmy tells Matthew he is incapable of love and has never managed a long-term relationship but Matthew replies that it is because he has been sleeping with Sadie on and off since before she married Jimmy.
