The Holdovers

Giamatti magnificent. Whole cast quite good. Full of ocular delights. Drags slightly here and there but a worthy 8.1

Enjoyable story I only knew half of going in. The cast was fantastic. Solid tone switches from drama to comedy. Strong 7.8

The Abyss

Watched the remastered 4k DV tonight and it looks spectacular. It's interesting to see old technology mixed w the new. Great directing mixed with some cheesy 80s overacting in spots. It did have some heartfelt moments as well. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Some nostalgia boost for sure. 8.1

When Harry Met Sally...

Recommended as a great movie to watch on NYE, we decided to put it on tonight. We're both in our early 40s, but I don't remember ever seeing this front to back, just here and there when it was on in the background. Well it was fantastic. Rob Reiner had one of the all-time great runs from '84-92 and this up there for best of the bunch. Always had a crush on Meg Ryan growing up and she's outstanding in this. Crystal has great presence and timing. 8.5. An all around triumph that still holds up.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Saw this in UltraAvx w Dolby Atmos w recliner seats. This is the pinnacle of how to see this type of flick imo. Monster screen with booming sound. Some good fight scenes, and the humour was solid. It's still a kids movie with 95% cartoony CGI. To be expected. I'm happy with the 5.8 I'm giving it. Expected it to be a little worse than it was. Pleasantly surprised in spots.

A Haunting in Venice

Another well directed and beautiful entry into this series. Some moments lag a little, but overall the pacing was satisfactory. Good performances overall. Slightly below Nile for me; however, a respectable 6.8.

Christmas Bloody Christmas

Loved the 80s retrowave set & soundtrack. Heard someone call it Terminator if Rob Zombie directed it in 16mm neon drenched glory w a side of high fidelity thrown in. Dandy was excellent as Tori. Will look out for her other work. Will also seek out more of Begos' features. This was a blast. Yes the ending was a bit long, but felt tongue in cheek like those family guy skits that never end. Strong 7.1 for genre fans.

It's a Wonderful Knife

This one missed the mark. Some decent effort from Widdop as Winnie, and Long is great if not underutilized as the creepy mayor, but the tone feels all over the place. Edgy horror meets hallmark and it just doesn't work. Some okay kills, and a better second half vs the first. Still, it's hard to go higher than 3.5 for this entry.

The Equalizer 3

I enjoyed this finale immensely. It was fun feeling like I was watching Gommorah in parts as well. Fuqua does pulpy action sequences expertly. This didn't disappoint. Some disjointed moments here and there and some baddie clichés abound, but for what we're looking for in a gritty actioner w a nearly septuagenarian Denzel? This is an 8.2 overachievement. Well done.

Thanksgiving

Waaaaaay better than I expected. Slasher comedy fans wet dream. Roth nails the tone for this one expertly. Best kills I may have ever seen from an over the top standpoint. Perhaps 10-15 min shorter would have benefited pacing, but small gripe. Some silly choices here and there, but overall a solid 8.0. Happily surprised.

Godzilla Minus One

Very good. Maybe sliiightly overhyped from all the "movie of the year" reviews I've seen, but it had a good story which is quite impressive for a Godzilla feature with characters you care for. Some overacting here and there took me out of the moment a little bit.

It also may have been our theatre's print but it was blurry in fast sequence and looked to be 480p in other stationary scenes. Still a very solid entry at a 7.6 for me.

The Flash

I'm overscoring this as a total time travel & nostalgia mark. The hilarious CGI made it campy and silly which was a plus for me vs a detriment. A time travel comedy that was a touch too long. 7.6 which is very high for these movies. Don't care , had a blast.

Leave the World Behind

Criticker is usually within 1-2 pts of my score but for this it guessed a 6.7 vs my 7.3 score (I base on 0.1-10 vs 1-100 scale) for ease of sharing review between multiple sites. This is to mean I naturally gravitate towards this kind of movie. Nice to see Esmail direct a feature film like this again. Good performances, excellent tension and chaos. It'll be divisive, but an easy win for me despite some message heavy handedness. One of the better NF originals you'll see. Loved Mahershala the most

In the Land of Saints and Sinners

One of the best late Career Neeson features of the last decade if not the best. Well placed and acted. Great casting w Condon stealing the show. Enjoyable and thrilling when it wanted to be. Strong 6.6.

Acidman

Good casting. Nice little indie this one is. Some scenes dragged a bit, but overall it's a solid 6.3 and for a movie of this type that's a good score. Put it as a positive on the tomatometer.

The Tutor

The first half was decent and then the writing fell off a cliff. It felt like the movie was trying to gaslight me. Hedlund was solid, but my goodness that creative decision to shave in that faux-receding hairline? Distracting throughout. There's a big plot point just after halfway that completely changes the tone and then there's just absurd plot hole after plot hole and some of the dialogue made me want to bang my head into a wall. E.g. "I was in a lake!"
"Why is your hair wet?" 3.1

American Underdog

Outstanding story, decent movie. Cheesy hallmark style for a lot of it, but still enjoyable. Levi and Paquin are good, Zaller is outstanding.
A bit surprising to focus on his first NFL start as the culmination and completely gloss over the super bowl, but I still enjoyed it overall. 6.5

The Creator

This type of movie is right up my alley. Anything with anthropomorphic robots and I'm in and will overscore it vs the avg viewer. This featured a ton of plot choices that didn't really make sense, but Alphie is phenomenal so who cares? Some good humour here and there and the emotion comes in droves. It can be considered cheap at points but I enjoyed it quite a bit so it all gets a pass. Beautiful to look at and thrilling to watch. Easy 7.9 for me.

Biosphere

Brown and Duplass were both quite good. The script was just okay. It's one of those where I wanted to like it more than I did. Some poignant moments elevate it to a 5.5. Worth a watch for those fans (like myself) of the Duplass brothers productions and in this case of Brown who was phenomenal, but those expecting more than a shoestring budget and a somewhat slow pacing that's dialogue heavy ought to look elsewhere.

Old Dads

Whiffs more than it lands. Some moments here and there were funny and satisfying, but too often it was just annoying millennials dialed to 10 with little payoff. It did do a solid job at making me hate pretty much everyone in the film though. Generous 5.3.

Killers of the Flower Moon

This was very well acted and told. It's a tough subject and isn't a joy to watch, but taken as a piece of art it's quite compelling. Second half seemed to zoom by whereas the first half took awhile to get its footing. Scorsese has a story here he can be proud he was able to tell. 8.1

The Killer

Excellent. Those w aversion to deliberate pacing and meticulous attention to detail may zone in and out, but I really enjoyed this. Fassbender is superb. Sound design is expectedly top tier. Strong 8.4. Not Fincher's best, and perhaps his most straightforward foray, but the pulpy richness is a treat.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Supremely shot and constantly entertaining. 8.2. Wild action scenes. For me, some of the B action movie villain stuff is a plus in these films, others may disagree. Looking forward to part 2.

Five Nights at Freddy's

Never played the games or read any of the books. Niece loves this stuff. This movie is weird in that it's not for adults as it's a bit tame and lame, but it's also not for children. I suppose those in the 13-16 age group may like it. Had a few moments here and there, but the neverending dream sequences grew stale. Generous 5.1 I'd say.

Creep 2

My review on Criticker: "This started out somewhat slow for me, but grew throughout the whole film. Akhavan and Duplass complimented watch other very well. There was a natural chemistry between the leads that I enjoyed. This was far more playful than the first. I liked the first in a "recommend to indie horror fans" way, but this one has further reach in my opinion. First half 6.3 ish. Second half 8.3! I'm going to go a little higher than the avg of the halves at a 7.5 and round up to an 8 for those 10 pt scale sites."

Saw X

I really enjoyed the opening act. Not been done in other saw movies. Octogenarian Tobin Bell was phenomenal in this. Parts of the middle third dragged a bit for me, but overall this deserves the praise it has received. 7.3.

Night of the Hunted

Just couldn't get into this one. Rowe is solid enough in the main role, but the nonstop preachiness and characters' choices were just too frustrating. The 90 ish min runtime felt at least 45 min longer as well. Too bad. I've enjoyed several of the director's other films.
3.4.

The Nun II

I like Taissa Farmiga's work, but in this I just couldn't get emotionally invested to the story whatsoever. Perhaps was my mood, I'm not sure. Felt like a 1000 other generic horrors surrounding demonic possession and the church. This was to be expected, but it just felt so by the numbers. Had some good moments, overall I landed at a 5.3. Cant recommend, but if you're a fan of the franchise you likely know what you're in for.

Really enjoyed this when I first saw it 15 years ago. Have seen it once or twice since and still think it holds up. Saw a bit tonight in passing and feel it's one of the last really good atmospheric thriller/horrors I've seen in the last 20 yrs. **Edit. Ended up re-watching in its entirety tonight and it remains a wonderful descent into madness. I continue to get a little creeped out by it. Nostalgia and just a solid thriller imo. 8.2

Creep

Solid indie. There are lulls w the pacing and it feels like it could just play in the background at times. Didn't always capture my full attention, but when it did it was quite good. I'd seen this on tons of best of indie horror lists for almost a decade now so finally scrolled past it tonight and popped it on. 6.2. I've always liked Duplass and he's cast perfectly here as Creepcity. If you don't mind super low budget Indies that are unsettling check it out.
I'll check out the sequel shortly.
