Have watched this two years running and it's beginning to be a tradition. Been enjoying the lethal weapon flicks as well lately. This is fun stuff. Really good chemistry between Willis and Jackson & Irons is a great baddie. Cheesy 90s action galore that hits the spot. 7.6 for me. Very good.
Initially gave this movie a 10/10 when I first saw it upon release not because it's perfect but because I was so thoroughly entertained and loved all the performances so greatly. I saw it again last July and still loved it but I'm more discerning score wise than I once was. It's still one of my favourite films of all-time entertainment and performance wise. Great directing by Duncan Jones. Today I'll slot it in at a 9.0 which is currently in the top 2-3% for movies I've scored on this site.
Rewatched this for first time in 13 yrs w my wife today. We're now 40 yet this remains an exceptionally crafted film. I'm a sucker for any type of media that stars anthropomorphic characters be it robot or animal. The heart and sense of humour of this masterpiece remains in full effect 14 yrs after its release. The animation also looks spectacular in 4k Dolby vision on an OLED screen. 9.3 for me, really close to a 10, but maybe juuuuust shy of that for me. Regardless it's so enjoyable, re-watch it folks! And if you never took a peek when it was released it ages very well. It's possibly even more timely now than it was in 2008.
First time rewatching since initial viewing upon release. Was able to see a 4k imax Dolby vision copy on a 65" OLED.
Spectacular doesn't do it justice. I love the mingling of science fiction with fantasy and good ol' family drama. There are things many choose to nitpick ad nauseum , but for me it checked so many boxes. The only difficulty I had was with the level of strobe like effects in the final third. Im particularly sensitive to those unfortunately. What a masterclass of cinema. 9.4.
Wasn't sure what to expect out of this one. Solid first two acts and an absolutely phenomenal third act. For fans of this meta shit that don't snob up during some blatantly silly/unexplained aspects this was great nostalgia mixed w the new gen. Generous 7.7 overall
Really enjoyed this when I first saw it 15 years ago. Have seen it once or twice since and still think it holds up. Saw a bit tonight in passing and feel it's one of the last really good atmospheric thriller/horrors I've seen in the last 20 yrs. **Edit. Ended up re-watching in its entirety tonight and it remains a wonderful descent into madness. I continue to get a little creeped out by it. Nostalgia and just a solid thriller imo. 8.2
One of my favourite 90s movies. Great intrigue, excitement and a wonderful score to boot. Penn is fantastic as Douglas' brother and of course MD was excellent in the role of Nicholas Van Orton. There is a ton of suspend your disbelief, but if you can muster that it's a wonderful ride and it holds up well. 8.7
Rewatched this tonight. Absurd and yet undeniably entertaining. It was fun seeing all these actors 15+ yrs younger. The over the top stunt style action flick is much more my style versus the 5000 flashing guns for 2 hrs w very little actual fighting. This one goes so far off the deep end you can't help but laugh and shake your head, but it's also done so tongue in cheek. 7.4 for a great amount of fun
Little Xmas Eve rewatch almost 7 yrs on and I forgot how amazing Mikey Shans Mr. Green was. Best part of the movie. Great chemistry and cheesy fun. Some parts missed, but this was a well done buddy xmas dramedy. 7.4
Rewatched this on a whim as I scrolled through streaming offerings. It's bad, but entertaining. A lot of flashing gun shots w a 3% accuracy and some awfully ludicrous plot points, but we're watching die hard here and we want to die harder. Bruce Willis is but 34-35 in this and still a long ways away from his 10-15/yr straight to video specials era. He keeps this entertaining and the one liners are so bad they're good. 6.9. Yippeekayay.
Another Neeson rewatch for me. This was worth the time imo. Good thrills, enjoyable 80s style B movie baddies, and an overall intriguing mystery. Has its faults w some pacing issues and some weak dialogue, but overall an entertaining film. 6.7 for me.
A rare rewatch for me. The entertainment holds up despite some aspects being completely asinine it's still a fun mile high thriller for me. Neeson in one of his best "post Taken action career" flicks. This was his second of four collaborations with director Collet-Serra (Unknown, Run All Night, The Commuter) and there's a chemistry there for sure. Upon rewatching it's remarkable how good the cast is and how well many of them have done since. 6.6 for me.
Just finished a re-watch a decade on. Really still enjoyed it quite a bit. 7.7 for me. For meta comedy horrors you can't do much better. An excellent fun filled ride. The last third is absurd and so hilarious.
Waaaaaay better than I expected. Slasher comedy fans wet dream. Roth nails the tone for this one expertly. Best kills I may have ever seen from an over the top standpoint. Perhaps 10-15 min shorter would have benefited pacing, but small gripe. Some silly choices here and there, but overall a solid 8.0. Happily surprised.
I enjoy Tom Hanks movies as well as fun robot movies like Short Circuit. This one nails quite a few things and does so w emotion w a good heaping of levity when needed.
Very enjoyable. 8.4
A fun watch at the cinemas. Audience was laughing throughout. I think a good crowd can certainly impact one's own enjoyment. A fun actioner w some good comedic chops. Some over the top silliness of course , but that's part of the charm I suppose. 7.9. Highly recommended for folks that know what they're getting into. Surprised critics are under 60% on rt. Too silly I suppose for some.
Pretty well acted and immersive story dealing w difficult subject matter. The abject horror they feel at the outset is palpable and well portrayed.
There were some slow parts, but overall this was worth the watch. Fun fact: Maddie Ziegler who plays Mia is the girl from the Sia music videos (most famously "Chandelier").
7.4 for me.
JL has great presence and comedic timing. Some of the writing was 5-6 rungs over the top and completely silly, but that's okay for this type of flick. Easy one to laugh with for the most part. 6.6
Tarantino meets John Wick mashup flick w European stoicism. It features some sublime kills and also some way over the top scenes. Quite enjoyable overall, but has its limitations. Friendly 7.8
Low budget mystery/thriller filmed out of Montreal (I caught the per litre gas price in the background. It's set in Baltimore). that got some good buzz so I gave it a go tonight. Really like a lot of Mendelsohn's & Woodley's work so that was an easy setup. I find the comparison to Silence of the Lambs a bit tenuous , but this was a solid effort in its own right. It didn't always go for the easy or popular choice. Happy we watched this one. Gritty one for the adults in the room. 7.1
Solidy crafted and well acted. Some suspend your disbelief moments for sure but overall a very good & expertly creepy flick. 7.4
Good acting by Isaac here. Slow building story, but worth your time if you want a to go on a sometimes gritty psychological journey w his character. Far too many slow moments for me with some interesting character choices as well. Not a great execution for me, but was happy I watched. 6.3
Worse than I expected. Very cringe in several areas. I like all 3 leads, so disappointed even for a silly popcorn flick. Not here for the plot, but was just too stupid to enjoy. 4.2
One of the best late Career Neeson features of the last decade if not the best. Well placed and acted. Great casting w Condon stealing the show. Enjoyable and thrilling when it wanted to be. Strong 6.6.
Balls to the wall action as expected. Solid but not great. Some of the writing was absurd, but we had fun. Some creative kills. Was fun to see the Goliath Levan Saginashvili in a role here. 7.2
My favourite film of 2023 to date. Outstanding performances from Salim and Gyllenhaal. Ritchie doesn't miss often. The pacing does slow slightly at some points, and that lowered the score for some, but I was fully immersed throughout. Spectacular. 9.0
Surprisingly pulpy action thriller. Far better than it could have been. Nice to see a King Leonidas & Luke Cage tag team. This one's for the adults in the room that enjoy 80s action movies w a side of cheese. 7.0
Surprisingly good & incredibly entertaining overall. Has its limitations, but the back & forth between the characters is a joy. Lamb in particular is a treat.
7.7
Intense. Beautifully shot. Really makes use of the sound design. Was ear piercing/gorgeous w Dolby atmos/vision combo for an at home viewing. There's a lot of missing pieces, but it nails the in your face chaos of war. This one leaves a mark. 8.0
A solid telling of a remarkable story. Foster was sensational in this for me. Benning seemed to nail the tough to handle main character here. Good crowdpleaser. Beautiful cinematography during dark night scenes as well. 6.5
