Waaaaaay better than I expected. Slasher comedy fans wet dream. Roth nails the tone for this one expertly. Best kills I may have ever seen from an over the top standpoint. Perhaps 10-15 min shorter would have benefited pacing, but small gripe. Some silly choices here and there, but overall a solid 8.0. Happily surprised.
I enjoy Tom Hanks movies as well as fun robot movies like Short Circuit. This one nails quite a few things and does so w emotion w a good heaping of levity when needed.
Very enjoyable. 8.4
A fun watch at the cinemas. Audience was laughing throughout. I think a good crowd can certainly impact one's own enjoyment. A fun actioner w some good comedic chops. Some over the top silliness of course , but that's part of the charm I suppose. 7.9. Highly recommended for folks that know what they're getting into. Surprised critics are under 60% on rt. Too silly I suppose for some.
Pretty well acted and immersive story dealing w difficult subject matter. The abject horror they feel at the outset is palpable and well portrayed.
There were some slow parts, but overall this was worth the watch. Fun fact: Maddie Ziegler who plays Mia is the girl from the Sia music videos (most famously "Chandelier").
7.4 for me.
JL has great presence and comedic timing. Some of the writing was 5-6 rungs over the top and completely silly, but that's okay for this type of flick. Easy one to laugh with for the most part. 6.6
Tarantino meets John Wick mashup flick w European stoicism. It features some sublime kills and also some way over the top scenes. Quite enjoyable overall, but has its limitations. Friendly 7.8
Low budget mystery/thriller filmed out of Montreal (I caught the per litre gas price in the background. It's set in Baltimore). that got some good buzz so I gave it a go tonight. Really like a lot of Mendelsohn's & Woodley's work so that was an easy setup. I find the comparison to Silence of the Lambs a bit tenuous , but this was a solid effort in its own right. It didn't always go for the easy or popular choice. Happy we watched this one. Gritty one for the adults in the room. 7.1
Solidy crafted and well acted. Some suspend your disbelief moments for sure but overall a very good & expertly creepy flick. 7.4
Good acting by Isaac here. Slow building story, but worth your time if you want a to go on a sometimes gritty psychological journey w his character. Far too many slow moments for me with some interesting character choices as well. Not a great execution for me, but was happy I watched. 6.3
Worse than I expected. Very cringe in several areas. I like all 3 leads, so disappointed even for a silly popcorn flick. Not here for the plot, but was just too stupid to enjoy. 4.2
One of the best late Career Neeson features of the last decade if not the best. Well placed and acted. Great casting w Condon stealing the show. Enjoyable and thrilling when it wanted to be. Strong 6.6.
Balls to the wall action as expected. Solid but not great. Some of the writing was absurd, but we had fun. Some creative kills. Was fun to see the Goliath Levan Saginashvili in a role here. 7.2
My favourite film of 2023 to date. Outstanding performances from Salim and Gyllenhaal. Ritchie doesn't miss often. The pacing does slow slightly at some points, and that lowered the score for some, but I was fully immersed throughout. Spectacular. 9.0
Surprisingly pulpy action thriller. Far better than it could have been. Nice to see a King Leonidas & Luke Cage tag team. This one's for the adults in the room that enjoy 80s action movies w a side of cheese. 7.0
Surprisingly good & incredibly entertaining overall. Has its limitations, but the back & forth between the characters is a joy. Lamb in particular is a treat.
7.7
Intense. Beautifully shot. Really makes use of the sound design. Was ear piercing/gorgeous w Dolby atmos/vision combo for an at home viewing. There's a lot of missing pieces, but it nails the in your face chaos of war. This one leaves a mark. 8.0
A solid telling of a remarkable story. Foster was sensational in this for me. Benning seemed to nail the tough to handle main character here. Good crowdpleaser. Beautiful cinematography during dark night scenes as well. 6.5
Very good. Maybe sliiightly overhyped from all the "movie of the year" reviews I've seen, but it had a good story which is quite impressive for a Godzilla feature with characters you care for. Some overacting here and there took me out of the moment a little bit.
It also may have been our theatre's print but it was blurry in fast sequence and looked to be 480p in other stationary scenes. Still a very solid entry at a 7.6 for me.
I like Whelan & Van Dien so decided to give this B creature flick a chance tonight. The CGI is from the 90s and even without a budget of more than $15 the writing let down the actors as well with wooden dialogue and awful choices. I still had moments of "so bad it's good" but few and far between. 1.7/10. Worst movie I've rated in years.
We knew this would suck going in, but dug in anyway. Quite a bit worse than expected. I hoped for something in the 5/10 range (expectations were low), but we got a 2.5 stinker. Had one moment that made me laugh out loud (unintentionally), and the rest was filled was incessant and unnecessary strobe effects during the storms. Should come with a high seizure risk advisory. Brutal acting from all but ol' Billy Loomis. A film has the budget it has so hating on the CGI of a small budget indie like this isn't too fair, but a lot of it was so awful and there were continuity errors as well. Only family of the cast and crew could truly enjoy this one.
One of the better silly but fun NF originals in awhile. Probably since Extraction. I'm grading this on an enjoyment actioner scale. Part mission impossible, part Bourne this is mile a minute absurdist fun. Gosling and Evans had a blast. Some of the baddy CIA peeps were poorly cast, but the main folks did well. 6.7
Gritty, depressing, electric. A Waugh specialty.
I tend to gravitate to the stories he both writes and directs. It took me too long to finally watch this one. Solid stuff. 7.5
Pretty on point satire. Too many over the top in your face retard moments though. Got to be too cringy for us. perhaps that's because the truth hurts. Regardless check it out as a Walmart version of idiocracy that's far closer to reality in the current climate. 6.2 (over 6 is considered good on my scale).
A very good engaging documentary. Nims & his team are absolute savages in the 0.0000001% level of elite human endurance. Really quite amazing. I don't want to spoil anything that happens along the way, but a true wonderful human as well is Purja. 8.4
Takes no prisoners. Hilarious, touching & brutal. Really at the top of his game here. Phenomenal. 9.0
Saw lite was okay. Some of the puzzles were pretty good, but I found the acting and dialogue to be sub par and often took me out of it. 5.4. Watch for the intense rooms if you like these types of flicks (I tend to) and try not to cringe too hard at the script.
A tale of two tones.
First half is a pretty funny buddy flick. Good dialogue, very natural performances. Found myself smiling throughout. Second half gets darker of course as is the point. I preferred the first half but overall the movie was very good for what it was. Solid 7.3.
Lang does a good job once again, but it's difficult to cheer for him considering his past. Obviously we're cheering for the well-being of the girl, but for him to come out the other side isn't a priority per se. Somewhat cartoonish baddies. Decent set pieces. 6.4 for me.
Started out promising and devolved pretty seriously during the second half. Still worth a watch for genre enthusiasts I suppose. You know the "shit goes awry on a plane" genre. 5.4 for me.
Criticker is usually within 1-2 pts of my score but for this it guessed a 6.7 vs my 7.3 score (I base on 0.1-10 vs 1-100 scale) for ease of sharing review between multiple sites. This is to mean I naturally gravitate towards this kind of movie. Nice to see Esmail direct a feature film like this again. Good performances, excellent tension and chaos. It'll be divisive, but an easy win for me despite some message heavy handedness. One of the better NF originals you'll see. Loved Mahershala the most
