Despite it being visually and conceptually stunning, the film turned out to be extremely slow and actionless for my taste.
Many people think that the aforementioned positive qualities outweight the negative, but personally, I think that narrative must prevail over visuals, soundtracks, effects or symbolisms.

@patozf Exactly.
I am watching this movie the first time ever. The visuals -especially the "How-a-Spacestation-looks-like"-Parts are great."
But all the meta-Stuff and Symbolism is boring.
4/10
Many things that don't make sense:
– How does one live with a huge hole on his chest? Is he inmortal?
– How does one survive a high altitude fall into the sand, with no protection? He is inmortal.
– Why would Obadiah want Tony Stark murdered? After his kidnapping and change of heart, sure, but before? He is the golden goose... even Obadiah admits it so!
– Also, why would he keep the incriminating video messages on the company server? For a criminal mastermind, he's pretty dumb :joy:
– Why is Tony breathless and weak when the chest thingie is off? The magnet is supposed to stop the sharpnel inside his body from reaching the heart... it's not powering the heart itself!
– By the way, how does a magnet near the heart stop sharpnel from reaching the heart? Doesn't the magnet attract the metal? Closer to the heart?
– Isn't there anything else in the human body that could get pierced by sharpnel and kill you? Lungs, liver, stomach, arteries...
– Why does the generator run out of power? 20%, 15%... it's a generator, not a batery!
Anyway, good movie, fun to watch without thinking too much... and great start for the Marvel Universe, who would have thought all that was to come after this? :nerd: (Not Terrence Howard, that's for sure :joy:)
loading replies
@surleyone I wouldn't call it science fiction. The arc reactor, the Iron Man suit, Jarvis... sure, all that is sci-fi. Everything else? Not so much. To me, science fiction depicts what could be possible if we had advanced technology, or we could change some physical aspect of our universe (time travel, for instance).
Iron Man isn't like that. They aren't saying "lets assume Tony built the first prototype in the cave with advanced materials which would protect his body from impact. Yeah, unobtanium and vibranium". No. It's made of spare parts. No sci-fi explanation there. Not fantasy either, they didn't go with the "he didn't die because of magic" path. It's just a plot hole they didn't care about :joy:. No big deal to be honest, it's not supposed to be a realistic movie anyway... but it is a plot hole.
But yeah, I do enjoy all Marvel movies, even if they're full of nonsensical parts (Iron Man isn't even the worst of them, on that aspect). Which is why I've watched all of them more times than I probably should have
I never thought I would be so upset about Ecbert's death, but somehow he grew on me, especially during the last episodes :c
And of course I'll miss Floki so much! That poor guy went through so much. I have no idea where his storyline will go from here, but that makes it even more interesting. I can't wait for season 5!

@haibara Ecbert's been the best character since he entered the show, to be honest.

Hahaha, I totally agree. Now robo-girls are going to continue the tradition.
I think the message of the movie is rendered more important and urgent by the fact that so many adults simply don’t get it.
The story is beautifully told, but in a society obsessed with being successful the metaphor about the gifts flies over most heads.
loading replies
@trek42 I believe the message is about family and community. The film tells the story of what happens when the members of this magical family are only valued by their gifts: at least one is crushed by the responsibility, one becomes an outcast because his gift is misunderstood by everyone including his family, and yet another is put aside for having no magical gift. The stakes are high because the family’s standing in the community relies largely on the contribution of their fabled magical powers. When the family loses sight of the reason why the miracle was granted in the first place the magic starts to fade. The magical house comes crumbling down, before the giftless granddaughter manages to bring the family together and save the day by restoring the miracle.. It tells me that whatever your talents and successes, you partly owe them to the family/community that reared and nurtured you; and that if you forget that you risk neglecting your very foundations. Moreover, that you are not defined by what you can do, but rather by the choices you make. And that people that are apparently powerless can be the heroes we need, by bringing people together and supporting everyone in the process.
Being a Colombian I can tell you that it was set in a perfect way.
The colors, the cultural diversity, the music that represents us, the typical foods, the personalities, everything. You could even say that the background on the violence is very well done. In Colombia we have a big problem that is forced internal displacement, so much so that we are the number one country in this. The fact that they gave a few little moments about this conflict ... brought me to tears, but I really appreciate it.
It is the perfect tribute to my beautiful land. I loved it.
In addition, I feel that it is very easy to connect with the characters and give each one a little development, considering that there are so many.
I have a little criticism for the movie though. I feel like a little more explanation was needed as to why Mirabel could not receive the miracle when she was a child and the specific reason why Casita was cracking. Maybe they could make it a bit longer to explain this, but overall I liked it.Pd: Lin Manuel Miranda never disappoints, I'm his fan 4eveeeeer
loading replies
@daniela-g The reason of Casita was cracking, was quite simple in my head. The Candle gave the miracle to Encanto, so they can live in harmony and love each other. When Mirabel was envy of her sister and "hated" her for her perfect life, The vision shows both hugging and getting along together. When it happens, Casita is good! what happens next? Mirabel argues with her grandmother, and the harmony is broken such as Casita.

I think they did explain it. The Gifts were given by/through abuela, not the candle. Mirabel didn't get one because abuela was too afraid/anxious about the future of the encanto. Same reason for Casita cracking.

@geekztor They clearly mention that the plane was hijacked to cause an unspecified political and financial disruption. They were paid a million dollars each to hijack the plan, they created a fake conference so they could get Muslim scapegoats on the flight, and the end goal was mentioned to likely crash the stock market or affect the upcoming election but the hijackers were mercenaries without a direct incentive besides financial gain.
It seems it was likely a state funded operation to make it seem like a jihadist terror attack. The plane was preprogrammed to crash into a building in London, and a message was set to play claiming ISIS like responsibility. This could both crash the stock markets and allow certain political messages to help specific candidates.
Very powerful movie! I don't need to repeat, what the other comments already pointed out.
The only 2 things I found a little bit weird, were 1st: that it seemd like nobody told Ruben, that his hearing will be different after the surgery. I don't think (or hope) that the doctors he probably talked to, wouldn't tell him that.
And 2nd, I feel like "Metal" as a genre, probably hasn't been handled fair here. I do not listen to Metal myself, but obviously for a lot of people it sounds just like "loud noise" which Ruben turns off at the end.
So metaphorically... Maybe that thought goes too far, but I feel, that metal as a genre was handled a little negative. Like these two only played Metal because they were hurt from the past and that they had to get out of it, to start living a normal life again. But still for the characters, as they were presented, I think storywise it worked and the journey they had, was resolved very very well.
But these really are the only issues I had. People should definetly watch it! Great movie! :)

@hallorian Every Ci patient will be told "before" implantation, that in the beginning everything sounds weird, mechanical, you don't understand much, if all.
It takes months or years to re-learn to hear with CI's. That part is poorly handled in this movie. That's why I gave it a relatively low rating.
Review by Paul Vincent
VIP5I can't believe that after two seasons this stupid "Whisperer War" is still going on. It's boring, played out just as slowly as the "Savior War" if not slower, and it's taken the show nowhere fast. Beyond the whole "Why would these people follow two crazed idiots who constantly kill their own people?" question, you also need to realize timeline wise how long this is all supposed to be. The war with Negan lasted just over three weeks in the story, this new war has gone over well past a year, how long is it going to drag on? Why have the "Good guys" not just put on whisperer masks and killed them off already? Why after Beta keeps killing people do they not shoot him instead of an undead Gamma? Ugh. Enough already. Then instead of ending the season they blame the corona virus for not doing post-production until the days before it airs? Enough's enough, let this show die it's slow death before it turns into a walker too.
Now that this season is finally over a year and a half after it started, I can say with confidence this was the worst season the show ever produced. They tried to blame covid first for a long delay to post produce their original finale, then put out absolutely horrifyingly bad episodes that they called "Extra episodes" which fanboys of the show defend being so bad because they were shot during covid, which is a problem no other shows or movies have had. The problem here isn't covid, it's that the show didn't end when it should have and now the writer's are out of ideas and the characters that you once cared about are empty vessels dragging the show along.
I can't believe this show I once loved is such a drag now.

@paulvincent83 better yet just shoot it so it CAN’T turn into a walker and comeback. This show should have died years ago... too many deviations from a good source and bad writing have been slowly and excruciatingly killing it, torturing us all the while.

@ruggid99 I lost interest after they introduced Negan. I realized that it had become super villain of the season. I certainly saw the show trying to mirror Game of Thrones with high level of violence and killing off main characters. Which doesn't work for this show. The characters are what drives it forward.
What took them soooooo long to make an episode like this? This is really the only episode in this extended season 10 that you can call "good". As good as the episode was, it's also annoying though that they wasted the other 5 episodes telling origin stories of dogs and literally chasing rats. I hope they end this series with Negan actually saving everyone, and Maggie killing him anyway, because even if he is the ONLY interesting character left, the show and his story should end. Daryl and Carol and their little spin off series interests me as much as watching a 45 inning baseball game, their time came and went and they passed the point where anyone cares, but they can at least end this on a high note with Negan redeeming himself while still getting what should've come to him a few seasons ago.

@PaulVincent83 Totally agree, I've followed every iteration of the Walking Dead since the original series. HUGE fan but I have to agree with you. Although if Negan had his own show I'd watch it instantly, he is only real interesting character left.

VIPAltough I'm german I rarely check out german TV shows. The last one was Deutschland 83 and that was like two years ago. Germany just hasn't figured TV out yet but that's another discussion.
When I heard Netflix was producing a german show I just had to check it out because Netflix has a great track record so far and Germany does have talent infront and behind the camera. But overall I think this show just fell flat. Good, but nothing great.
Fantastic visuals that are shot very beatifull, the actors IMO are mostly great and the music/score can be beautiful but often gets obnoxious. But unfortunetly there are too many characters that are hard to keep track off which distracts from the story.
The story is already confusing enough even without trying to keep up with the many characters over different decades and it heavily sets up future seasons without answering a lot of questions about this one and just left me unsatisfied at the end.
Still worth watching tough IMO and very bingeable similarly to Stranger Things.
But if you do watch it then choose the subbed version. I checked out the dub really quick and it sounded horrible. And also don't browse your phone as you might do on other shows. You're going to miss so much important shit.
EDIT after Season 2:
I'm not actually sure what just happened and what I think about it. But the one thing I'm sure of is that the casting in this show is absolutely phenomenal. The actors look so much like their younger counterparts that I'm not fully convinced they aren't actually related.
Plus the cinematography is still fantastic and the music monatages are really beautiful (and they got rid of those obnoxious sound effects).
And altough the story is still very confusing I found it more easier to follow and more engaging than Season 1 because I now know all the charcters and their background. And it seems that the writers had this all planned out and aren't just making shit up as they go.
Changed my rating from 8 to 9.
EDIT after my first rewatch just before S3 is released.
Changing my rating again. This time to a 10. After S1 I thought it was good but confusing show (8), after S2 I thought it was great and really well thought out one (9). Now after rewatching both seasons for the first time I think the show is fucking masterpiece. (10). Once you can watch it without being confused and actually knowing what is happening your just in awe throughout all of it.
If they stick the landing with season 3 it could be up there with the best ever.
EDIT after Season 3
Masterpiece. Simple as that.
Writing. Directing. Cinematography. Casting. Acting. Soundtrack. Everything is perfect.
I'm going to miss the beautiful music montages at the end.

@hwlr Actually, anything dubbed on USA sounds beyond horrible (really)! Guess the only good dubs they produce are for games (sometimes!)...
But once again I was impressed with two things: how superfast some Germans can talk and how good Brazilian dubs are usually on most things (thanks to both Brazil's high demand of Japanese series since the 80, which created great dubbers; and, specifically here, Brazilians being part-Germans). It was super fun watching it on German with Brazi subs and later the Brazilian dub with German CC subs (which was extremely hard to read, I feel depressed now lol).
Intelligent, twisting, gripping, well written and well acted. Definitely worth a watch. Netflix gives you options - mine was the original German with English subtitles. That’s my recommendation.

@capiazza-gmail-com I went with English dubbing AND audio description - audio description constantly tells you both the names of the characters, and what time and what world they are in. Super helpful.
This is by far the greatest TV Show of all time. No other Show started amazingly, got better in the second season and finished even better than that in the final season. Absolutely phenomenal.

This show's something else. There's so much to unpack each episode and I'm 100% sure that, if someone had seen my face during this episode would've been worried about me.
Am I the only one who paused for like 10 minutes when the family tree appeared and was like, wtf does all of this mean? I've always struggled with generations, family trees and guessing who's who. No matter the language. Even in my native one. And so I needed to make sure I understood all the connections before moving onto the ending.
Another show would've just saved the family tree for later in the season but not Dark. I can't believe that they gave us the whole family tree from two different worlds and it's just episode 2!!! This show is on a whole norther level.
I always suspected that Agnes' husband was important somehow, but he's the key to everything. Holy Molly! If we know who Tronte's father is... Damn, this show!
So, let's summarize my thoughts 'cause otherwise I'll drive myself nuts. Noah's father is Bartosz together with a Silja, who, I'm guessing, is the girl from the future. So that means that Bartosz was killed by his own son and had an affair with Martha, who's Turan out to be his second cousin twice removed (or something) and his own great grand daughter in alternate world. Seriously, my head hurts.
I remember that I was always curious to know who Tronte's dad was and in my recent re-watch of the season, I remember Agnes saying that Tronte's dad was a priest. So, I'm guessing, maybe Peter? I don't know. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
One of the bits I'm loving the most is the generation trio. I'm both mesmerized and terrified by them. It's so weird to explain.
Ulrich and Katharina. My heart hurts. It was really touching and it hurt me more than I expected. Old Ulrich actor is AMAZING. You can see the pain in his eyes. I still remember the day when I thought it was just the same actor with make-up on. This is seriously one of my favorite scenes on the show.
I've always been against adults terrifying children or just even pushing them, but when Katharina pushed young Hannah against the wall and told her to keep her hands off of Ulrich and Mikkel I was like, there you go girl!!!
And that poor Claudia's secretary! Did anyone else think she was pregnant? Poor girl. I loved the scene when she told Tronte that everything started with that white-haired woman and her dog. Like, go Gretchen! She definitely has a part to play.
And the father of the year award was to Tronte. I can't believe how messed up this show is. In order to save Regina, Claudia has to ask Tronte to kill their daughter in order to push Claudia to be more focused and save everyone.
Also, how the hell did Tronte survive the apocalypse? He wasn't even in the bunker. And young Noah talking to Elizabeth. Something tells me that Elizabeth would be the one killing her father. This is one relationship I'm looking forward to getting to know more about.

@phoenix-calypso The fact that a vast majority (me included) thought that it was the same actor with prosthetics speaks volumes about the amazing casting they've done for the show. Up to one point, I'm gonna start to think that even the actors are closely related to one another.
The whole whisperers and their masks is so stupid. So you just put a mask and you become invisible to zombies. Leaving this aside why didn’t the other side just put masks as well to defend from whisperers and “invisibly” kill the wave of zombies sent by them.

@daniels0xff My perception is that ß has spent so much time amongst walkers (I guess without many showers) that it's not only the mask that provides cover. It's his hole clothes, and even his own hair and skin drenched in zombie dirt for so many months. Plus he knows how to move and manoeuvre between walkers, and all of that doesn't automatically come from just putting a mask.
Still, I agree some things feel forced, but as someone else noted it's a show and sometimes we have to deal with this kind of things :-)

@larcenet They should be smart about it. Thor is not real, The house on the haunted hill is not real. Still quality TV makes sense in its own universe. Random garbage is when the fanbase is too strong and they can do anything as people will just take it. You're telling me if Spiderman and captain Jean Luc Picard come to save Atlanta you're just going to take it as "zombies are not real anyway"?

@daniels0xff Yeah it's ridiculous. One of the most iconic scenes of the show is when Rick and Glenn drape themselves in entrails and still end up having to run because the rain starts washing some of the blood off. 10 seasons later that all goes out the window and Beta can push his way through a crowd of walkers already attracted by noise just because he slapped half of someone's face onto his head?

@felixgotrek Leaving aside the fact that zombies being able to smell is just as stupid, as they are rotten flesh just a tiny mask can provide the necessary smell for a horde of zombies to ignore you? Not to mention that that skin that the mask is made of it dries in few days and doesn't produce that much of a smell. I'm not referring to this episode in particularly but to the whole idea of whispers.
