Scream

You'll have to leave all logic at the door, but this was a fun movie to watch. I love the nostalgia.

The Many Saints of Newark

Sopranos happens to be one of my favorite shows of all time, so I was looking forward to this. But to be honest, I was also wondering if this was even necessary. After watching this, it confirmed my suspicions. My favorite things about the show were the strong cast, their interactions, and the dialogue. The movie does have a strong cast (it was neat watching Michael Gandolfini), but it's missing the strong dialogue and interactions. I think it tries to make up for this with a lot of action. It doesn't necessarily share much with the show, other than the setting and character names, so it ends up feeling like any other mobster film.

Reminiscence

This is reminiscent of better films, like Strange Days, for example (which had better tech and a better story). I think with a stronger writer, it could have become a much more exciting movie. Instead, it's sort of a mess that has moments which show what it could have been.

On the bright side, I did find the setting and world far more interesting than the film itself. I loved the visuals and over aesthetic.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The overall film just felt a bit off. It was noticeable that it was a new director as this movie was missing the same tension from the previous two.

I thought they would have focused on the case in the courtroom too and not just the two scenes. I think this would have made things really interesting. Instead it's almost an afterthought.

That being said, Wilson and Farmiga are great, and are clearly the soul of the franchise.

Geez. I went into this expecting an easy popcorn movie, but this thing was tense, especially the first half! I think they could've ended the movie a bit better though. Overall, much better than expected

Zack Snyder's Justice League

After watching the 2017 version years back, I didn't want to watch this because that film was god awful. The story was all jumbled, the backstories to some characters was minimal, and ultimately it was forgettable.

After hearing good reviews and reading a bit more into Zack Snyder coming back, I decided to give it a shot. I was really surprised at how well this film turned around. It's pretty much night and day. As I was watching this, I couldn't help but think that this is a completely different film. I appreciated the back stories to some of the newer characters like Victor Stone.

I really loved the acting here. Sidney Poitier is amazing; he brings so much energy to this role. Elizabeth Hartman did a good job as well.

WandaVision

There were aspects I really loved about this series and some I didn't like. I loved how it was shot; I was impressed by how most of the episodes paid homage to shows of the past. It was fun to appreciate. However, I wasn't hooked at all. From a perspective, I could tell it was a good series, but I was bored at times.

The Prince of Tides

It was a good film, not great. I don't know why it was nominated for so many awards though.

Coming 2 America

Off the bat, it was cool seeing the same faces, who made the first one so amazing, come back. It was especially amazing to see James Earl Jones again! As far as the movie, it wasn't very good. I think the storyline they chose was very predictable, and forced the actors who made the first one, to take a back seat. At some point in the film, it felt like there wasn't even enough Eddie Murphy! Pretty much all of the new people, besides Wesley Snipes weren't funny or unique at all. There was some good jokes in there, but most of it was hit and miss. Overall, it just felt like one long skit.

Good film. I really liked the acting, especially from Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. The downside is that the movie is a bit on the longer side, and can drag in the middle.

Judas and the Black Messiah

That was a powerful film! Two great performances by Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya! Daniel Kaluuya, in particular, was amazing as Fred Hampton. He really captured the right attitude and energy. The speech scene was sensational! I highly recommend. Side note: Martin Sheen looked creepy as hell, as J. Edgar Hoover!

I finally found the time to watch this film! I loved the acting, especially Phillip Seymour Hoffman! I think this is an example of great acting, but just a good movie; not great.

The Gambler

Pretty good film. Sadly, I watched the remake before I saw this. This is clearly better than the remake! Pretty good job by James Caan. I wasn't a fan of the ending though

The Producers

What a good comedy! The chemistry between Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder is amazing; they work well off of each other. Both of them bring a unique energy to their roles.

Rosewood

Sad piece of American History. It's one that isn't often covered, especially in school. The film itself is pretty good.

It hits the right note of stupid/funny. It's a really easy watch

The Namesake

I was pleasantly surprised coming across this film. It was great to see the late Irrfan Khan. It was an interesting, seeing a little glimpse into his parent's roots, so you can get a better feel of Gogol. I think sometimes for children of immigrants in America, it's hard for them to quite understand the sacrifice their parents had to make. As great as America is, I think sometimes people feel the need to strip away too much of their own culture in order to be more "American"; by doing that the next generation ends up in this limbo with a mixed identity

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

The film was good, not great. The performances of Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman are really good! It's bittersweet to see Chadwick Boseman's last performance here. He clearly had so much talent left to give. Viola Davis plays the diva so well!

The Tax Collector

The film itself wasn't that good, but Shia LaBeouf's character was entertaining in a bad way. I spent the whole movie debating in my head whether or not if it's offensive that he's playing a Mexican street-caricature

Locked Down

We were bound to get a Covid/quarantine movie at some point, and here's the first major one. Put simply, this was awful. The acting was pretty bad, along with the storyline.

Places in the Heart

I was really impressed with this film! The acting was really good, not a shock, considering it's from a solid cast. Before browsing on Prime, I had never heard of this film before, so it was a pleasant surprise

The Intouchables

I made the unfortunate mistake of watching the US remake (The Upside) before I saw this. Watching this has gladly washed away that horrible experience. This was such a great film! The chemistry between the two leads was superb

Let Them All Talk

The film is a little on the boring side. The writing definitely wastes such a good cast. They deserved better

Deadwood

Such an amazing show! I can definitely see the hype behind the show. The world it creates is so immersive and detailed. It's one of the best "Westerns" I've ever seen. The acting is top notch. There's plenty of people who are typically character actors, but get their opportunity to shine here. Timothy Olyphant, Brad Dourif, and Ian McShane particularly stand out here. Al Swearengen happens to be one of the greatest characters ever! I highly recommend!

I Used to Go Here

I really like Gillian Jacobs, but this movie is so damn predictable. This movie pretty much follows the going-back-to-college-to-find-yourself template. Oh well, at least the movie wasn't that long

The Plot Against America

This was an excellent show. I think it captures the slow burn of increasing anxiety perfectly. The acting was amazing, especially the performances from Morgan Spector and Zoe Kazan. Even though they had different opinions on the same side, you couldn't help but identify with both. I do wish the show was a few episodes longer; it did seem like the last 20 minutes or so was a little rushed. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it.

Love Story

The storyline was decent. I was however, really impressed with Ali MacGraw's acting.

Hillbilly Elegy

It's a mess of a movie. Plain and simple. I'll get the good stuff out of the way: Glenn Close was really good. It's a shame that her performance is wasted in this. The bad: I wish there was more to this story, especially with Amy Adams character. I don't want to shit on a child's performance, but I wasn't a fan of the kid who played Young J.D. I also didn't like the way the film was going back and forth between past and present. Such a disappointment of a film.

I expected it to be a little better, especially with the solid cast. It's also a little on the long side. The film itself looks beautiful, and the soundtrack is pretty good.
