awesome movie. like others say, the alien is incredibly advanced and the science and biology that was used to make it believable were what made this movie terrifying. sure, i was a little horrified any time calvin darted around, sort of how i feel when a spider darts around, but it was the implication throughout the movie that was truly terrifying. as humans we've survived and thrived despite our weaknesses and handicaps because we've used our intellect to advance far beyond any other animal on earth. this little martian was outsmarting them at a frightening pace and it wasn't even evil; just witnessing how desperate it was to survive was simultaneously horrific and heartbreaking. as bummed as i am by the one direct death calvin caused, i mean -- the guy WAS trying to kill calvin with fire and all, so i can't blame the alien. humankind has done way worse in its time trying to survive.
the twist at the end was easy to predict but no less enjoyable than if it came as a shock. more than anything, i hope there's a sequel in which we learn more about how calvin's biology works and in which jake's character lives to struggle through adjusting to earth's atmosphere after well over a year. fingers crossed calvin plays nice with him.
LIFE (2017) REVIEW
.
.
:scroll: Plot: A team of 6 scientists aboard the International Space Station discover a rapidly evolving life form that has caused extinction on Mars and now threatens all life on Earth.
.
.
:man:⚖ Review : Life is an engaging, fast paced and and intense thriller. An amalgamation of brilliant Cinematography and Intense and visually great vfx this movie shines as an entertainer. The screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese encapsulate a series of brilliant scenes and attched them one to other and Director Daniel Espinosa handles them them with ease.
The scenes where the alien form tries to create havoc and horror like environment about its presence sends some chills down your spine.
The Credit should be equally shared with a established and big starcast of the movie with Ryan Reynolds , Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Hiroyuki Sanada. The Performances are on top and brilliant from start till end. This movie is tightly edited to keep a short 104min runtime which doesn't bother to waste anytime.
For a viewer point of view the movie is highly entertaining and hooks you up from the first 15mins itself. The unpredictable twist in the end just baffles up your mind . Dont Miss this Highly entertaining flick.
.
.
:thumbsup:Goods : Rebecca Ferguson is the soul of the movie with a top notch performance, Brilliant Direction , Stunning VFX, Gripping Set Pieces and Sequences.
.
.
 Bads : Due to its short runtime we see less character development and hence none of them stay in your minds after the credits.

.
:fire: Final Rating : 8/10

:white_check_mark: Recommendation : An Engaging and Entertaining Flick. Recommended.

Holy fucking shit, I was not expecting that godforsaken ending. What a way to fuck up someone's day.
The movie itself is just above average, offering some good tension-filled moments and impressive special effects, but nothing too groundbreaking. The characters aren't given any special personalities and their backstories are given all through blatant exposition. No creativity in the character building, for this one. The alien design I found to be quite cool, as it evolved over time and consumed smaller animals and eventually humans. Going into this, I don't know why, but I was surprised by the amount of gore and violence, which I dug. I didn't realize it was a rated R film and a full-on shock horror piece, and while there is tension here and there, it's in pieces, which is a problem. There's no hanging tension in the air through the whole movie. Why are there momentary breaks where the humans are content and calmly just sitting around while a fucking alien is on the loose in the ship. Now some might say they did this in the original Alien from Ridley Scott, but that was a much larger ship and the alien was human sized. This bat-type alien is on a very small NASA research ship and could be just a couple feet away. But whatever, besides the problems the movie has, I did have fun watching it and I did get tense during quite a few parts, so props for that.
But that damn ending, I love it. I called it just a minute or two before it happened. Glad the writers took the fucking risk and made a memorable ending that sticks with you. We need more endings like this.
Smartest creature ever. Super adaptable, evolutionary. This is by far the bad assiest being ever imagined. The science in the movie was up to my extremely lofty standards. For the first time, ever in a horror movie, this thing could theoretically actually exist makes the movie extremely interesting. The main reason I gave it a 9, is due to the fact, they should have sacrificed the first guy, immediately. I had one other issue, but that would tip spoilers. Other than that, this is a great, thrilling, mind bender of a horror sci-fi movie.
And for those who ridiculously state this was "like Alien". This movie had a super intelligent, highly evolved bacteria. This was never done before. Actual physics and biology was implemented. It wasn't just some creature out of the mind of a teenager. The crew were attempting to contain and survive. Never before have I saw a movie, that was about containing an entity while above the planet. This used an actual space station, that is real and does exist. This was not a fairy tale of a movie, as was Alien. No one was hunting this thing down with guns and such. This movie is about what can actually happen as we go frolicking around our solar system. This is something that we should actually be worried about. That is completely ground breaking in every way possible. The Europa Report was closer related to this film, but even that was not as real of a threat as this movie, since it was on a Saturn moon, using theoretical science and fictional equipment. Life used all actual equipment, actual science, and actual crew reactions, although, I would have sacrificed the first guy, immediately and launched the immature state of Calvin at the first sign of an issue. And one last thing, Calvin didn't even kill anyone, except the first guy, who was attempting to incinerate it. I bet in part two, we will find out he is actually peaceful.
This movie was nothing like Alien. Besides the fact that the setting was in space and there was a creature hunting them down (or was he?). The Alien was killing, Calvin was surviving.
Netflix added this movie so I rewatched it after already seeing it in cinemas when it came out in 2017. I felt the need to leave another review because it blew me away AGAIN. I knew everything that was going to happen and I still felt the same as I did the first time, as if I would change the outcome of the movie. Still superb.
Seeing it the second time around I felt different toward Calvin. More like Hugh and less like Rory. I saw now how this creature being trapped, poked, burned, electrocuted would go on a killing spree and how it is trying to adapt, evolve and survive in these new settings.
The CGI is fantastic, Calvin reminded me of a flower at first, beautiful how they made it move around.
I still recommend this movie to anyone. I still think it is the best Alien movie made so far because it is different that just a movie about Aliens trying to destroy our world. It's more about survival instinct. The ending still gives me chills and I hope there will be a sequel. I want to know more about Calvin and how he would survive on earth. There is a lot more that they could do with the story so I hope they will.
Well !
I saw Alien Covenant some time ago, so I will compare it quite a lot with this film, sorry.
This movie... In my opinion, is better made than Alien :
- The decisions of the crew, despite being wrong at some times, are still understandable given the circumstances. I know there isn't THAT MUCH of a difference between Life and Alien Covenant, but I think what's important is how you feel about the overall credibility of their actions
- The behaviour of the creature is slightly different : while Aliens are killing machines, Calvin is "only" trying to survive (while retaliating when attacked, of course). Some clues are given throughout the film to support this idea.
- The setting is realistic, with the ISS, existing technologies, good physics...
For the realisation in itself, it is quite well done : the shots are great, the music and atmosphere works well (if not outstanding) and the acting is convincing !
I'm feeling a bit dumb though, because I didn't really guess the very end... I thought about it, but seeing as it went without them being abnormally stressed out (well David had still a hard time), I thought they had preferred a happy ending...
HOW NAIVE !!
Still... this gave me a good laugh when I realised they really switched trajectories, this was the icing on the cake !!
Anyway !
Overall i spent a great time, and this made me forget I was ill for some time !
Life is a pretty interesting movie that is basically a survival movie with elements from horror and thriller that is not afraid to have some drastic scenes (some of the people in the cinema left when the first dead occurred). However, these scenes are scarce. The Alien looks great, far better than I expected from the trailers.
Most of the time this movie keeps you on the edge, it is pretty captivating - the acting is great, however I found the characters to be a bit shallow and would have loved a bit more insights and development. Never the less, the crew is likeable and you do care for them which makes the story of course much more thrilling. The ideas are in part pretty innovative and the filming is great - so is the soundtrack. So all in all a good movie. However, shortly before the end, I did guess what would happen and it did, which I consider to be quite a bummer. However, the way they shot it, was still enjoyable - and again, the music for the end is ingeniously picked.
This is why I award the movie 9/10. It was fun watching from beginning to end, and I will love watching it again some times.

Why does everybody compares this to Alien ? This is not Alien, this is The thing. The concept of the creature is great even though I guess it would not be viable (wouldn't it consume a loooot of energy ?).
It's beautiful, a little original even though it follows the genre's standard. You see the final twist coming from a mile away.
But as often, I'm really annoyed by how stupid the characters are. They're not random people thrown into a high stress unexpected situation. They're astronauts, trained for this specific mission, aware they're dealing with an unknown life form that could be dangerous. But they still act like scared teenagers at Camp Crystal Lake.
You do not go in the room while it's attacking the first guy. Or when it was attached on her outside, why would they even try to take her back in with it ?? Why didn't she try to throw herself into space ? Though I wonder how it's capable to move outside in zero gravity. Why are they always on this idea that they'll deal with it later, when they already saw that it was dangerous and could kill since the beginning and have seen it evolving to be more dangerous very rapidly ?
But it's great if you can get pass that.
