The Herculoids: 1x07 The Mole Men / The Last Dorgyte

How does Dorno immediately know a "mole ship" when he sees one? This time, the bad guy is Markon (the Mole), and Zandor says that Markon is up to his old tricks. Zandor has a reputation because all of these villains invade his planet. They really hate the guy. There's a lot of repeated animation in this, it's almost like watching a clip show at times. These Herculoids cartoons are packed with action, though. I'm sure I saw these as a child, but it must have been in reruns years after they originally aired.

Looney Tunes: 1953x11 Southern Fried Rabbit

A Freleng-directed short that watches very much like it's going through the motions. Although the gag with Bugs blowing out the bomb's fuse is good, especially the timing as Sam runs it back towards the tree but it explodes halfway there.

Looney Tunes: 1942x36 A Tale of Two Kitties

This is just unbridled Clampett energy. Tweety is the coolest he will ever be. Catstello is funny but, WOW!...he is so loud. This is a great, and I think often forgotten cartoon.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle show: 1x02 Fractured Fairy Tales - Rapunzel

Features the continuation of Rocky and Bullwinkle's "Jet Fuel Formula". Fractured Fairy Tales has a story of "Puss and Boots". Mr. Peabody and Sherman drop in on Napolean and swipe something from him that reveals the source of one of his traits.

The Rocky and Bullwinkle show: 1x01 Jet Fuel Formula (1) - Jet Fuel Formula

This is like watching a variety show. It's the first episode and it'll be fun to see how the show evolves. I saw a lot of this show as a child, but I'm sure there's much more that I've forgotten than what I'll remember. The two main segments feature a continuing storyline starring Rocky and Bullwinkle. "Fractured Fairy Tales" spoofs on Rapunzel, "Peabody's Improbable History" stars Mr. Peabody and Sherman hopping through time while Mr. Peabody simulaneously adopts Sherman, and featurettes star Bullwinkle as a poet, a magician, etc. The most enjoyable things are the quick-fire jokes that hit and miss equally and the voice work, especially Bullwinkle and Mr. Peabody. The simple and often sloppy animation is endearing.

Looney Tunes: 1953x10 Muscle Tussle

They used to play "Muscle Tussle" a ton on the old Bugs Bunny/Road Runner show. Daffy's awesome in this, even though McKimson tones him down, but Daffy's such a sucker and an overconfident one at that. The chain-chewing teeth gag is an all-time classic. Nice touch when Daffy spits his teeth out and some of them have gold fillings. The "one cheeseburger...and hold the onions" bit is a riot, too. Love when Daffy is posing and flexing, and his girlfriend asks him if he's got a stiff neck. Daffy deserves that kind of subtle abuse.

Woody Woodpecker and Friends: 1945x02 Chew-Chew Baby

Wally Walrus is in top form here. He's looking for a lady friend, and of course, Woody's planning a little revenge for getting kicked out of Wally's apartment building. Woody dresses in drag as a way to get back at Wally. The animation in this is way better than the later cartoons of the series. In some places, like early in the short when Wally is dancing, it's practically comparable to the same era of Disney shorts. Wally's voice is tremendous here. Woody is Bugs Bunny-like with his tormenting of Wally.

Looney Tunes: 1942x34 The Daffy Duckaroo

Wow! It's another one that I can't ever remember seeing before. There is so much weirdness going on in this cartoon. It's probably one of the wildest, fastest, loudest shorts that I've seen. The Native American crashing his bicycle and later crying because Daffy "bwoke his widdle hammer" in the Petrified Forest...the drawings during that moment look very odd; almost incomplete, actually.

The ending when Daffy's trailer is stripped of its tires, and the brave gives them back to Daffy because they "no fit putt-putt"...it's like it's unfinished. The brave kind of glides over to Daffy and when he talks his mouth doesn't move. It's just dubbed in or something.

I'm confused about the whole cartoon, but I still loved it. Daffy's two or sometimes three-string guitar with four tuners., the maiden's thick Brooklyn accent, the horse breaking the fourth wall and asking if there's a first-aid student in the house, well, it's a bonkers cartoon.

Looney Tunes: 1937x25 Speaking of the Weather

Now matter how legendary Frank Tashlin is, the sort of name-dropping or puns that these cartoons consist of are just not for me. I'm sure they were very popular in their time. There's lots of clever ways that the magazines are tied together to form what little story there is, but it's just not funny. I also have similar problems with most of the non-funny cartoons of the 1960s.

Looney Tunes: 1953x09 Fowl Weather

Sylvester isn't quite as funny in this, probably because he doesn't say much. He's mostly trying to escape both a bulldog and a rooster. The voice work is really good on the bulldog and rooster, though. The "AAAAA SHADDAP!!!!" line at the beginning is the only thing Sylvester actually says and it's the best moment in the short. Tweety has a few things to do for once as he scratches around the chicken coop with other chicks. When the bulldog imagines a cartoon bubble with Granny blasting him with a shotgun, it's delightfully violent stuff.

Looney Tunes: 1942x32 The Hep Cat

This is on Jerry Beck's list of 100 Greatest Looney Tunes. It's crazy Clampett and I think it's the first ever Looney Tunes cartoon in color. But it's still pretty dull. It's just about a horned up tom cat. The drawings are really good but the gags are nothing special. I'm likely wrong about this one, but it just doesn't work too well for me.

Looney Tunes: 1953x08 A Peck O' Trouble

Dodsworth the Cat is a dud. The schtick is that his laziness gets him into many opportunities for pain, and he gets plenty of that in this cartoon. There's a kitten that Dodsworth cons into hunting a woodpecker for him, and thankfully, Dodsworth suffers the consequences for his actions. There's some pretty good gags in this that make up for what is ultimately an unappealing main character.

Tales from the Darkside: 1x13 Anniversary Dinner

It took very little time to figure out that this was going to be a story about a married couple who are cannibals. A young woman named Sybil, who happens to visit with the couple at the most unfortunate time, acts as dumb as a post. She comes from a broken home, but even that isn't an excuse for her overall stupidity. The awesome Alice Ghostley plays Elinor, who is married to the moody and hot-tempered Henry (Mario Roccuzzo). They've got a weird chemistry that sort of works. Elinor appears to be a very loving, tolerant person. Well, other than her one nasty trait. Taking this one step further, is the final shot implying that this couple actually ate their children?!?!?

Looney Tunes: 1953x05 Kiss Me Cat

It's another cutesy Chuck Jones cartoon, which can get a little annoying. Thankfully, the mouse looks and acts psychotic and there are some great facial expressions. I do like that Marc Anthony has to cover for Pussyfoot and has to scramble to get him out of jams.

Looney Tunes: 1953x07 Upswept Hare

Bugs wakes up groggy and unknowingly drags his butt to Elmer's penthouse pool. Bugs looks so good while slumping and splashing himself with water. Then he comes out of the pool room with a towel on and uses the piano to get his voice in tune after struggling to hit the right note while singing "There's No Place Like Home"...it's just a favorite moment.

I love how carefree Bugs is in this whole cartoon. The way he dances on the roof of the penthouse is so well animated. Elmer looks terrific in this, too. Later, Bugs and Elmer face off in a few sporting events. The timing is perfect when Bugs, accompanied by the tune "Freddie the Freshman" (of course), tries jumping over the bench and falls flat on his face, laughs and says "tripped". The way he acts embarrassed is so great. This has always been a classic to me.

Sherlock Jr.

A wonderful short film with Buster Keaton as wanna-be detective. There are plenty of laughs, with most of them generated by Keaton's shy, sad little character. There are not as many stunts in this as there are in his later films but there are still a few that are jaw-droppingly amazing. His comic timing is impeccable and this story is heartwarmingly cute. It wasn't intentional, but it looks like this film is 100 years old at the time of my viewing.

Tales from the Darkside: 1x12 In the Cards

At least this was not another comedy episode. This isn't really very interesting unless you're into fortune telling. But it was done with a serious tone and tried to conjure up a darkened atmosphere. The acting was pretty corny and overdone. I had no idea that Tarot Card reading was such a cutthroat business.

Monsters: 1x08 Sleeping Dragon

This was so silly. The "dragon" was B-movie cool, but it (and everything else) was cheap looking. It must have been filmed in a closet because everything is so claustrophobic. Kin Shriner (Merrick) was constantly grabbing and clutching Beth Toussaint (Lisa) even though they couldn't have possibly gotten away from each other in the 12' x 12' room they were shooting the episode in. Russell Johnson is also in this as a professor, same as his Gilligan's Island role, who basically just says "NO!" to Merrick until he gets killed off after about 10 minutes. The way that Lisa exterminates the dragon is hilarious, again not having enough room on set to move more than two feet away from it when she kills it.

Looney Tunes: 1953x04 Forward March Hare

Bugs gets mistakenly drafted into the Army and inadvertently causes his drill Seargent to be gradually demoted. Bugs isn't intentionally getting his Seargent in trouble, he's just kind of bumbling his way through boot camp. He's sort of out of character, and it makes this a less funny cartoon, but it is entertaining.

Looney Tunes: 1953x03 A Mouse Divided

Sylvester becomes a father to a mouse and spends the hilarious second half of the cartoon fighting off the neighborhood cats who know there's a mouse in the house. The timing of this short is incredible. It's what Freleng was best at. Mel Blanc's voice work is excellent. I love the voice of the cat salesman and the cat posing as Santa Claus (in July, no less). The Santa gag with the cat being shot out of the chimney and exploding on the horizon is classic. It's too bad that the first half set up with the stork delivering the baby mouse takes so much time.

Looney Tunes: 1953x02 Snow Business

The added element of the hungry mouse makes this Sylvester and Tweety cartoon a little better because it allowed me to not have to rely on Tweety to be funny, which he isn't. Sylvester rules (of course), and the funniest moments for me are when he has to scrape his hand off of the hot stove with a spatula. The way he quickly rummages through the utensil drawer looking for the spatula is hilarious. Another great little gag is when he tamps out his burning tail in an ashtray.

Tales from the Darkside: 1x11 All a Clone by the Telephone

Goodie. Another Comedy episode already. This is really just an alternate take on Twilight Zone's The Dummy, but an attempt to make it funny. Which it really isn't. Harry Anderson stars and Dick Miller makes a brief appearance, but it's not enough to offset the manic, goofy tempo that this episode has. For comparison, it's way better than its predecessor, Djinn, No Chaser, but that's not really a complement. I've got my fingers crosses for something at least slightly eerie from the next episode.

Godzilla finally makes an appearance and as expected, it's cool. Keiko and Young Lee Shaw have some nice chemistry, also.

But those goddamned pouting Randas and mopey May...they only threaten to leave Older Lee and Elisa about a half-dozen times during this episode. Just friggin' leave already!!! Please! The show will be instantly better when they do.

Tales from the Darkside: 1x09 A Case of the Stubborns

A young Brent Spiner and an even younger Christian Slater star in this story about a boy's grandpa who doesn't believe he is dead. Eddie Bracken also stars as Grandpa Titus, and he just nails the part. It was cool to note that this was a story written by the great Robert Bloch. The ending shot is seriously one of the grossest things ever put on TV.

Tales from the Darkside: 1x08 The Word Processor of the Gods

I was never happier than when Richard deleted Lina and Seth. The actors playing those two characters were portrayed to such an exaggerated extent that I didn't even call Richard's decision into question. The ending was nice. I can't recall how closely this follows the Stephen King short story.

Outer Range: 1x01 The Void

After watching the first episode, it's pretty apparent that this is going to be a show with endless questions and mysteries and very few answers or even explanations. Josh Brolin is cool in this, and the cinematography was pretty, but there wasn't enough here to make me continue watching more.

Reacher: 2x08 Fly Boy

The special investigators were a fun group to follow, but the whole story was just too big and the final action scene in the plane was way, way over-the-top. I thought that Reacher giving away the $65MM was kind of dumb. I guess it was money recovered from a big, bad, corporation so that makes it okay . If there is another season, the story needs to be about less or on a smaller scale.

Looney Tunes: 1942x28 Eatin' on the Cuff or The Moth Who Came to Dinner

The live action segments with the singer/narrator weren't appealing and the story of the moth marrying the bee was cute but kind of dull. A joke about a moth eating pants can only be taken so far.
