holy shit, chef
The most unrealistic thing in this cursed movie is Jared Leto full on wearing his work uniform all day during his day off
What a great example of working with less or moving in space!
I actually disagree with others that knock this; I think it is a feature and not a bug.
The story and plot is very straightforward, familiar, and even overused or seen 100 times before. In her first feature debut, Chloe Okuno takes all of that in stride and makes something great here.
The tension building comes from someone who has been doing this for a long time, score, the lighting, location, camera, etc are all top-notch. Maika Monroe in the leading role does a phenomenal job here and just lets her face and expression tell the whole story.
If you're a fan of atmospheric, thoughtful, and physiological thriller you should really give this a spin! Just remember that flower, sugar, and butter may make a cake, but not all cakes are the same.
This film won't be for everyone, even those that are Garland fans. For those that do enjoy it, I believe a re-watch will be beneficial.
As always, Jessie Buckley completely knocks it out of the park. Sound design, lighting, and cinematography are all top of its class, ESPECIALLY sound design which serves as its own character.
All reviews or comments on this film should start with stating what a phenomenal director Sean Durkin is. What he is able to pull out of his actors, the expert lighting and mood, every little detail is top of its class.
I don't know anything about wrestling and this isn't a movie about wrestling, it is a greek tragedy and misery biopic. So many great performances here to call out an individual, but Zac Effron blacks out and turns in an all-time performance here. Absolutely stunning across the board, i can't keep thinking about the entire thing.
Richard Reed Parry absolutely murders the score here too.
I will follow Durkin to the ends of the world after this, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and The Nest.
Harris Dickinson is going to be talked about in best actor circles in the coming years.
Really enjoyed the scope and focus of this, every single shot besides the second to last is from the POV of Priscilla.
Sofia does an incredible job at setting and capturing the mood while subverting the expectation of that mood at the same time.
Knockout performances by Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi here. Beautifully shot and set and not to mention the incredible musical direction.
Not going to be for everyone and some may find it a bore, but if you give in to it, it will repay you.
within the first 5 minutes they decide to force feed you with on-screen text showing you that the opening scene is in the past because you are too stupid to understand.
then they establish that Ashton Kutcher does not understand what herb plants are.
I'm happy that Steve Zahn got paid for this, but his character serves zero purpose.
Tig Notoro continues to be the best with the least amount of effort. Tig Hive rise up
Went into this thinking that the discourse online and similar think pieces HAD to be overblown and had to admit, they had good gripes.
If this were almost any other director this film would be such a bigger issue and is that right? Every "cinephile" adores PTA so he gets a pass from people?
Some other thoughts:
- Wanted to leave the film thinking everyone is overhyping Alana Haim, and jokes fucking on me because she slays
- Should a 25 yr old female and 15 yr old male romcom be celebrated?
- Regardless of if they spend the rest of their lives together or not, does that negate the fact that the relationship is being celebrated?
- Should it just be swept under the rug of "welp, this was what the 70s was like"?
- Why does the Asian bit play for laughs?!? Why include it at all when it serves no purpose to the plot and is only a low hanging fruit chuckle from the crowd?
- I love Benny Safdie, but should he have been cast in this role as a closeted individual when there is otherwise so much pressure to accurately cast actors for those roles?
Being a teenager at church camp sucks. Good performances by Natalia Dyer and Timothy Simons
Hell fucking yeah, this shit rocked
I had no idea this happened the same summer as Woodstock and I assume the majority of the viewing audience is just now realizing too, what a shame. Stevie Wonder fucking slayed, Nina Simone with a great song that easily would be played at similar festivals today. BB Fucking King too. i miss live festivals so much
People should really give this a chance. It is a much better CBS sitcom than normal and once the show finds its footing it is very enjoyable!
Spiritual cousin to Red Rocket and addition to the Misunderstood Dirtbag collection.
An unsurprisingly PHENOMENAL performance by Andrea Riseborough with a shockingly good performance by Marc Maron
As a childless male I am unqualified to comment directly on the subject matter, but here are some high-level general thoughts:
I did not know what to expect for this special, was it magic? A one-man show? Something different? Well, it is a bit of everything to be honest. Some sleight of hand to warm up the crowd before making everyone cry for this public facing therapy session.
Very good with some peaks and valleys. You'll have almost as much fun identifying everyone in the crowd as you will watching.
Very heavy and is a performance that leaves you thinking much more about yourself than you did prior to viewing.
Go in with an open mind.
A lot of standing in doorframes that are either too small or too big while not saying anything.
Sadly, I wish that I had rewatched Portrait of a Lady on Fire instead.
My therapist thinks the only reason I keep watching these After movies is because I am a glutton for punishment
Put this up there with Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique. Good historical artifact that can serve it's purpose that I desperately do not ever wish to see again
This film is so fucked in every best way and Simon Rex turns out a complete unhinged performance and is phenomenal. Sean Baker is a gift of a director
The best thing NSYNC has done in years
An allegory about a few different things rolled into one with George MacKay playing a man convinced he if a wolf. With that being said, IMO this needed to lean into the absurdity and crazy about 35% more than it did. They are all playing this 100% straight and could have benefited from being a dark comedy instead
I am but a simple man. I see Carrie Coon, I watch Carrie Coon. I went into this film blind, not seeing any trailer or anything outside the cast. Carrie Coon is such a fierce and there is a scene maybe 20-30 minutes into the film at a dinner party and Carrie has this incredible non-audible close up that is so great. Sean Durkin knew what he was getting with Carrie and gave her the space to operate in the best way possible. Incredible use of the house itself which felt like the third billed character.
Slow burn of a film with no grandiose payoff but more a calm and understated agreement or conclusion. This one will certainly stick to my bones and I will think about it for days to come. Not sure if this was the color balance from the projector or by design but this was a very dark film, using almost all natural lighting it seemed.
This film will definitely benefit from a re-watch to fully grasp the unraveling of the spool and so I can properly understand the final horse scene.
Always great to hear anything from Richard Reed Parry and he did an excellent job with the score.
Carrie Coon forever
The only thing that this franchise has done is telling women that no matter what your partner has done in the past, it is okie dokie as long as he is 1) a "bad boy" and 2) throws up his hands and says he has changed like Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy
Is Hardin the least believable bad boy ever created?
Was hoping that this would be the 2023 version of Confess, Fletch. An under the radar, sneaky great film. Sadly, this is not that.
Nicolas Winding Refn has nudes on every executive. That is the only reason i can think of that allows him to continue writing and directing shows
PLEASE stop giving David E. Kelley money to make insanely poor TV
I had so much fun watching this on imax.
I am telling you, if you go in with zero expectations and just let the movie wash over you, you'll have a great time.
Enjoy the latest installment of Jake Gyllenhaal Unhinged and have some fun
This made me hate movies
Some things don't have to be made
I am but a simple man, you're telling me that Christopher Abbott with frosted tips is rocking out hard to Papa Roach in this while getting VERY in touch with his emotions? Say less my friends, say way less.
Great first feature from Jerrod Carmichael
Update: rewatched since first released at Sundance. Still is fucking awesome and may be even better on second viewing
It is really hard to end a movie like this without it being a straight homage to The Game and feeling fresh. I feel for Jake Johnson for that, because that is the only thing holding back this movie.
Very fun and thought provoking. You can tell this idea was born out of Covid but not in a bad way. LONG LIVE DETECTIVE CRASHMORE
Goddamn this series rocks so hard
