Yellowstone: Season 1

Don’t quite see the hype yet but an enjoyable introductory season overall. Really like Rip’s character and Walker interests me too and you can definitely sense some tension brewing between the two. The chemistry between the latter and Beth will only stir things up. Kayce’s arc lost momentum towards the end of the season but coming back to the ranch is a big moment for him. Jamie I don’t really care for at the moment. Onto season 2!

Boiling Point

One of the best things on TV this year. Same cast and director as the film, and just as class. Right from the first episode it forces you to put down your phone and really watch. An astounding central performance from Stephen Graham, because he’s incapable of doing otherwise. Particularly enjoy watching for those little moments that may turn bad, a pan being on too long etc. It is different to The Bear: uses interpersonal-comment-as-you-pass-with-a-hot-plate humour rather than, for instance, having to wrestle a big inflatable hot dog into a small car. Was initially worried it had too much dazzle and not enough life but once it drops the “we’ve only got one camera” shtick it quickly finds rhythm - by the end of Ep 2 I was so invested I (a very miserable and hard-to-move person) almost cried at one of the story twists. Nailbiting stuff. You really can’t look away

In Marcus’ episode Will Poulter’s character said he thought he was the best until he started working with someone at some restaurant who was way better than him, and so kept as close to him as he could in order to learn from him. This was probably Carmy, having seen that framed photo of him and Will Poulter’s character on this restaurant Richie’s at

The Gallows Pole: This Valley Will Rise

Great little watch. Socha deserves to go absolutely meteoric off this if he wants to. Loved all the king gloopy scenes and that specific middle-of-the-country natter that only Shane Meadows can possibly capture. Stunnin

THIS is the stuff that gets me excited about The Walking Dead universe! THIS is the level and care that should go into TWD!

The Bear: 1x03 Brigade

The final scene (continuing from the first scene) is just beautiful. Camry going down to see the sunset on Mikey’s birthday, whilst the wonderful “Oh My Heart” plays by R.E.M.

“This place needs to me here to start. This place is the beat of my heart”

The Bear: 2x04 Honeydew

Marcus’ character doesn’t particularly interest me, but really enjoyed his interactions with Will Poulter’s character. The realness of the latter’s acting and dialogue in particular really go a long way

Ted Lasso: 3x12 So Long, Farewell

I liked the finale, ignoring whatever the hell that musical bit was, but Season 3 on the whole has been a massive drop off from the previous two. Longer drawn-out episodes, spending too much time with characters you care little about, bad corny jokes and writing. Not a good season, but it was tied up nicely I think.

Fear the Walking Dead: 8x01 Remember What They Took from You

Regained some hope in the show when I learnt they were bringing Maddison back but season 7 was boring as hell. Something didn’t feel right about this season’s opener either, lazy writing idk. Really really hope they can salvage this show but Alicia’s absence, Strand character’s many misdirections and this PADRE storyline doesn’t fill me with much faith.

The Reckoning: 1x01 Episode 1

A chilling, morbid watch - but it must be said - Steve Coogan absolutely nails Saville. Writhingly uncomfortable-to-watch performance

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon: 1x02 Alouette

Actually really digging this show. Impressed at how quickly the writers have made me care about a new character in Isabelle - something that Dead City failed to do in six. Clémence Poésy is killing it.

The setting and scenery makes the series look and feel so fresh. Ok, there’s certain plot armour elements that are a little overboard (a baby being born 2 months premature and being completely fine, all children speaking English fluently, Daryl falling literally into a herd and having the time to look up and around, get up, get a weapon out, swing it about, without getting bit) but it’s whatever - it’s a tv show - about zombies, lol.

So far so good. Best stuff they’ve done in years

1923: 1x06 One Ocean Closer to Destiny

Seems I’m in the minority but this was probably my favourite episode so far.

Teonna’s storyline along with Spencer & Alex’s are still the most interesting aspects of the show for me, but this feels like the first episode where Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren have actually been able to work together, and provide us with their expertise. Their conversation outside the house was great mainly because it felt real, and you get the sense that both are enjoying their roles more and more as the show goes on.

I’m enjoying this series, although admittedly I haven’t loved it, but is quite extraordinary to look at – this goes for every episode. Much like Yellowstone and 1883, it feels like a movie at times

Saltburn

My major problem with this film is that I really enjoyed about 70% of it, before they started making up endings. A lot of people are afraid to admit this.

Having said that, it was gorgeously shot and captivating and that’s why it felt like such a let down when all 4 endings were crap.

Ending 1 (the first twist with his family on his birthday) just invalidated the first 80 minutes of the film entirely and every emotion he felt up until then.

Ending 2 (what happened after the party) was just a bit stupid. The drone shot after it was great though.

Ending 3 in the coffee shop was when it really started going off the rails.

And Ending 4, just a completely mental reshoot.
