I'm a huge fan of SF and AI based plots - I was really looking forward to seeing this but it was a frustrating disappointment. It has terrible horrible shamefully bad writing. Not a single original idea about AI and in fact they don't really deal with AI apart from robots basically being exactly like humans but nicer. No original futuristic sci-fi ideas either with a lot of the futuristic stuff not making any sense. For example the AIs speak to each other in English, no super fast data pours between them. They can't even speak remotely over cellular or whatever... they use walkie talkies lol. They had an old women robot that limped around though the robots do not age?!? I could have forgiven all of this in the 80s or from an adaptation of an Isaac Asinov novel but we're in 2023 and we've all watched the Matrix etc... Also it had very little action and the action sequences it did have were bad and boring with yellow lazer tracers zapping around in the near dark or fog. Visually it was ok and the score was decent but the poor writing completely ruined it for me. Half way through, I couldn't wait for it to end. You can't be a serious Sci-fi fan and think this is any good, it's just not possible... yes that's you good reviewers.
Ok this episode was total crap. Reacher stands out in the open and calls out for the bad guy who could be hiding anywhere and shoot him from any angle. Then the helicopter comes in with a gunman shooting an AK or something similar and again Reacher goes out in the open with his pistol and has a shootout with the guy? Then the cop walks out in the open straight towards the bad guys? That’s just so stupidly unrealistic. No trained officer would do that. He would run from cover to cover and try and flank them or at least come at a diagonal. Was I asleep during the first 13 episodes or did the action sequences just become very stupid?
Damn the preview looks cheesy. Am I the only one that’s ODed on super hero movies?
Really f-in’ good start. Love the cast. Love the erie cold desolate gritty setting. It’s hard to nail down exactly why it is but this show is just better than the rest. I guess it’s all of it. It’s just good without being pretentious or calling too much attention to itself,
Loved season one. Season two is poop.
Season one was ok. Season two starts off ok but turns to poop.
I’m not a monster movie expert but this is pretty good. The acting is decent, the pace is quick, the monsters and special effects are well done. Plus it’s a bit refreshing since there have not been that many monster movie series compared to zombies, super heroes, space operas etc Just finished the second episode and I’m eager to keep watching the next one when it comes out…
Pretty incredible situation. Definitely worth watching.
Another great example of how if it were non-fiction, no one would go along with the story saying it was too unrealistic. Like “that’s too stupid, no one would do that in real life…”
Average true crime production but the story really makes it standout.
Trakt says available on 0 services but it’s available on Netflix.
I still really like the show. Way over average IMO.
I disagree with other reviewers criticizing the pace and saying the episode is boring. I was not bored at all.
I also disagree with people criticizing the flash backs. I usually tend to dislike flashbacks but here they are key to deepening Darby and Bill and contrasting the super luxe high tech hotel in the frozen tundra vs the grungy motel in the desert.
The phone and laptop in the bathtub was a nice touch. Not only is he gone but she has no hope of reaching him.
Fingers crossed that they don’t mess up the finale.
PS: I let it run a bit after the credits and they started showing a preview of the next episode. Why the heck would they do that?!? Who wants to know what’s going to happen in the next episode before watching it?!?
Sets, cinematography, soundtrack all top notch. Acting and actors are pretty good. Dialog is basic - shame they did'nt try to make it interesting. Action is super unrealistic "a la" John Wick but that's the point and the choreography and stunts are pretty good. Mel's a nice touch too... LOVE the NYC in the 70s vibe. It's all overdone and exaggerated but a lot of fun to watch....
Still a great show but a very disappointing last episode. I agree with @leytonstone that it seems like it was a different crew crafting this episode.
For one thing, the battle sequences were so poor. The riflemen attacking the city and defeating all the gates so easily was a cop out. These are flintlock riffles that take a minute to reload. The poor Samurai are really depicted as helpless morons.
Then the fat Irish bad guy is able to easily defeat Mizu and Shaizen together with a sword in 2 seconds?!? WTF then he runs away from Mizu like a sacred child and moments later pounces on her and chokes her while she holds a dagger and does not stab him… what happened?
It’s not ok for characters to switch from bad ass fighters to stinky ass fighters over and over again.
As for the end… sailing away to london on a ship with two other unknowns and the Irish dude in a cage… she does not speak English. Is the Irish guy going to be her travel guide and translator?
I know he’s English but dang he looks Irish.
Terrible movie. The action scenes are absolutely ridiculous and awfully choreographed. Most fights drag on unrealistically with each participant having had the opportunity to put down their adversary multiple times. At one point Gal is running in a straight line in the flat wide open desert and she has three dudes shooting at her from 20 feet directly behind her with AKs and they miss! Ridiculous. They never even told the Asian actress who is supposed to be a top MI6 agent how to hold a gun... I'm always amazed at how this kind of sloppy amateurish stuff is possible when there are so many talented people available. Glad to see so many other commenters agree Gal can't act. She's not even pretty IMO.
Decent actors, acting poorly, terrible dialogue, terrible sound track and audio effects, terrible stunts and visual effects. Must be embarrassing for David Rodriguez to screw up so badly. He should definitely look for a different line of work. I’m sure the actors and the crew hate him for adding such crap to their resumes. Some scenes are so bad they seem like spoofs. The inception folding city scapes are particularly hilarious. It starts off bad and gets worse and worse… I was very tempted to turn it off at minute 110 and I should have. The end is mind bogglingly pathetic. They actually have a final “twist” that would make you think there could be a sequel lol. How is this movie even possible… didn’t anyone read the script before agreeing to participate?
Man if they were trying to bore us to death so we’d turn it off they succeeded. Lasted 22 minutes. I have no patience for this crap. If it gets better let me know…
Incredibly boring and annoying. It’s the kind of film where they take pride in having bored and annoyed the audience on purpose. Plus all the characters are super unappealing - on purpose again I’m sure… Gosh I really dislike French cinema - except for comedies. As a testament to how terrible French cinema can be, movie theaters in France are required by law to play French movies (otherwise most of the time they probably wouldn’t).
It was undoubtedly very longggggg and pretty boring at times but surprisingly, I was mostly captivated. It is such a horrible tragic true story that is worth knowing and therefore I say take your shot and suffer through it…
The characters actions and reactions are often so stupid and unrealistic that if it were not (supposedly) very close to what really happened, I would say that the writing is terrible and that audiences would never play along. A perfect example of how true stories can be so whacked that they would not fly as fiction.
Mostly good acting and sometimes great but it took me a while to get used to DiCaprio making a constant and incredibly sever frown with his mouth. He and Lily elegantly portray village idiots with depth and finesse. DeNiro plays himself perfectly as a total megalo a-hole. Frazer is scary as heck. Someone needs to cast him as the monster in a new horror franchise.
Anyone know what McDouffus was adding to the insulin? Was Mr. Cob a white dude and did he end up with the headrights? They should have taken a lil fat off the three hours and put it towards meat on the tail end…
It’s not often that I have such a strong aversion to a movie that I have not seen. I will never ever ever watch this. From the preview, posters past Miss Marvel etc. I know with 100% certainty that I will hate this movie. I’m still having cringe flashbacks from the preview. And I love bad ass chicks - I even have Trakt list by that name…
Over average “portrait of an assassin” film. Fassbender plays the role very well.
The inner monologue is ok but seemed to fail, at times, at being as interesting, as original or as funny as it intended to be.
Having our assassin listen only to the Smiths was a little cheesy IMO. I know it was meant to be cheeky but it missed the mark for me.
My daughter and I agreed that because of Fincher we entered the theatre with high expectations and were a tad disappointed. Had Fincher tightened things up and sprinkled in a couple more tasty morsels it could have been a great film…
… and there are a ton of plot holes and implausible situations. Here are a few in chronological order (spoiler alert):
Being invisible is impossible our man says because there are cams everywhere. So his camo is dressing like a German tourist. He scopes out the location of his future assassination for days as the German tourist, then switches to ninja clothes for the dirty deed, then switches back to his same German tourist outfit to make his escape. Ridiculous.
Why didn’t the assassins that beat up his gf wait around to kill him? You would think that would count as a failed assassination and that they too would be targeted for cleanup. I need to rewatch the part with the attorney because perhaps he says that he expected our man to have disappeared to the other side of the planet and that sending the assassins to his house was just a gesture to make it look like he made an attempt to clean up. And in that case to whom were they making this show of cleaning up? The botched assassination victim? That makes no sense…
The first assassin has one of those loud entrance door beeps when our man enters the assassins house and yet our man goes about looking through the house as if he expects to find the assassin asleep on the couch with a bag of potato chips. Of course the assassin gets the drop on him… Ridiculous.
Billionaire client says attorney suggested the proper thing would be to cleanup (kill our man) for an extra $150K. What? $150K? Assuming the attorney takes 1/3 as commission, that means each killer gets $50K to fly to Puerto Rico and murder another assassin? Dang assassins are on sale in this movie! They must have killed a lot of folks at $50K a pop to have “more money than they could ever spend”.
That’s it for now. If I’ve missed any other plot holes or implausibilities please let me know.
PS: I don’t usually care about holes and implausibilities but this movie pretends to be a realistic peek into the life of a highly competent, no frills assassin.
Worth watching overall, especially for fans of whodunits, despite the usual butchering of Poirot by Branagh who can’t even do a decent French accent. Fey is also terrible reciting her lines like a 5th grader rather than speaking them in a natural way. The rest of the actors do well.
The sets are good and quite lovely for the most part except for being overdone at times.
The plot is thick and unravels nicely which accounts for the decent grade.
I’m curious to see how much they deviated from Christie’s plot on which this is supposedly loosely based.
If Branagh had not so mercilessly slaughtered Orient Express and Nile I would have probably tolerated and liked this one better…
Unwatchable garbage. Lasted a painful 30 minutes before turning it off...
Show starts off ok but by episode 3 it becomes unbearably cringy. There is not a single likable character here. It may be based on true events but those events where not that interesting, original or captivating…
Total crap. Lasted 10 minutes.
Right off the bat the intro monologue is pretty bad and unoriginal… it gets worse from there… Kora is tilling the earth at night and sniffing the turf… in her tank top… then the Irish folks songs start playing… pretty sure at this point this is not going to be good… wait the clan leader is a breaded gentleman with an Israeli accent… I do like the French actress what’s her name… did not like her the first time noticed her in Atomic Blond (a fav of mine)… but have seen her a few more times and she’s grown on me… I feel terrible she’s getting a shot a leading in this dog poop…the CGI is pretty good… the score is terrible bad opera… wait here’s the bad guy…basically a silly ripoff of the SS… and his cronies… I have to stop… OMG this sucks balls so much it’s mind boggling that it was made… dude if this can get made I have a good shot at moviemaking because it would be hard to do worse with all the funding they have… everything is ridiculous… I could keep writing… OMG why would they spend infinite resources to fly across the galaxy to claim some farming rights from this poor planet? How many accents can you have in one movie? Aussie, Irish, British, Israeli etc… lol UPDATE contrary to most poop this actually gets better and they spent a ton of cash CGI is dang good.
Acting, sets, script and score all good. Even the dialogue is not bad. I have a weak spot for whodunits and movies taking place in snowy locations so that also helps. It’s true that the show is a little pretentious at times and cheesy at other times but for the most part it is quite good and way over average IMO. Only the first two episodes have come out so far so that’s all I’ve seen. Hopefully won’t go downhill…
Super cute lil' film with groovy animation and a great sound track / score. Definitely the best feature length TMNT IMO. My tween son who's never watched TMNT and pretty much only likes YouTube and video games was captivated and cracked up several times...
I should not have tried to watch this. I knew it would not be for me - but people said it was good - and there’s what’s his face and Robbie - I love them - and there are so few movies coming out - I was desperate :sob:
Ridley somehow got away with doing a decent job with Rey but here she’s not acting very well and not at all convincing as a tough broad. She grunts, huffs and puffs way too much. The book was decent and had a great vibe but this movie’s got nothing except a few glances at some beautiful wilderness. Oh and her scope had no reticle. What’s up with that?!?
Definitely one of the best 80s fantasy adventure films for kids. Maybe even second best right behind Goonies.
I like Wes Anderson. In fact Life Aquatic is one of my favorite movies and I love Moonlight Kingdom. Asteroid City unfortunately was unwatchable and my honey and I agreed to turn it off after about 15 minutes. Hopefully Wes is not senile and will get his mojo back with the next one… What kind of bird are you?
Made it through the first two episodes and then my hun and I agreed that was enough. Dialogue is terrible, acting is terrible, plot is predictable and moronic. Constant droning background music is supposed to up the stress level but instead it gave us a headache and made us nauseous.
