Well, so I just saw this movie for the first time yesterday. Almost 40 years after it was released. A bit late yeah, but it never really seemed interesting enough to check out. And what can i say? To be honest, I expected the movie to be pretty bad considering how much praise it gets (usually in horror that's a sure sign it's only trendy to like it somehow). But I never expected it to be this bad.
The characters are just a big mess. The acting is atrocious and the casting choices are very weird. Everybody looks way to old for the role they play, and the dialogues are just some of the worst I've ever heard. My favorite being Laurie saying "was that the boogeyman?" which had me burst out in laughter. Great stuff. Anyway, none of the characters ever sound realistic in any way. And there is NO chemistry with any character and I mean zero. Michael Myers himself is just nothing special at all. The opening scene with him is pretty great tbh (when he's a little kid), but after that, it's all downhill, and we don't get to know anything about him at all whatsoever. He's truly lacking any character whatsoever. He doesn't speak or even have motives. He just goes around strangling people. Yeah very creative.
The story is among the worst I've ever seen. Almost not a single thing makes sense, and it becomes very slapstick at times. It is the perfect example of all the archetypes everybody hates in horror movies like "go randomly into the closet" and "stab the killer and toss the knife away afterwards and sit and wait for him to get up" or my personal favorite "just give him the car". The main storyline itself is extremely narrow and it truly feels random. For like 70% of the movie there are no real interactions of any kind between anyone and some overgrown babysitters just sees spooky things and gets killed in (extremely) predictable and stupid ways. There is a doctor too, but that part is so ludicrous that it almost seems to be for comedic relief. He's sure funny when he breaks out his doomy and gloomy speeches, I'll give him that. Especially when he's peeking on the kids from behind the bush. That was hilarious. The ending is atrocious too. Worst end sequence I've seen in a while. And that brings us to...
The directing is simply awful. Some shots drag out for a laughable long time, so much that it gets really awkward. And there is so much repetition too, and some parts that (I guess) is supposed to be scary just looks very funny. Like the times when Michael collapses. Or when they are being tailed by a car accompanying the "creepy music" for like the 5th time in like 10 minutes. The editing is poor also, like when Michael cracks the car window. And the movie is shot in such a way that not many scares are unexpected. It's a very predictable movie. Like the music will always let you know well before hand when something creepy is about to happen. Which brings us to...
The score is very amateurish and very often plain bad. Yes the main theme is kinda good, but not after you've heard it slapped on like 50 scenes. It starts to get funny after a while to always hear that tune. Not very scary.
Overall, the movie felt like a very bad low budget horror of it's time. But would it have been better back in the days? Hell no. It's a bad movie, no matter what time period it's from. It's just a very trendy movie, and now that I've finally seen it, I can safely say that I wasn't missing out on anything. Phew.
A difficult movie to watch, makes me scared of ever having kids.
I have just seen the first episode, and that is enough. This was awful. The acting, the story, the scenery. It also feels nothing like the games in it's "atmosphere", even with all its forced references.
But probably worst of all: it was boring.
One of the worst pilots I've ever seen. Steer clear of this one if you have any standard, even if you don't care about the games.
A stomach wrenching movie. It's really well done and it really makes you think.
I went into this without even reading anything about it. Not even the plot summary. To say the least, I did not know what was going on, at all, for the longest time. And when I finally realized what was happening, I felt really bad for having giggled all the way there. This movie really messes with your head and it is masterfully made. I like how, about 70% into it, it takes a sharp turn (I only say this: video tape) as if to wake up the viewer from the coma this movie has purposely induced. And when it wakes you up, well, you can't look away any more. Your eyes will be glued to the screen until the end, after which you will only feel a big void in your soul.
At first i thought "It can't end like this!" but then i realized it's kinda perfect. The movie is like a mindfuck, and it only sets up a discussion. You will think about this movie for days to come, and what we are really doing to our kids as a society. It's very sad. I would like to say that this movie has some seriously pitch black comedy at times too, but I won't because I'd feel too awful.
Fantastic movie, and a great classic!
Really funny movie. The ones rating this as bad is missing the entire point :)
It's a bit amusing how much people like this movie, when it's just your average run of the mill thriller. Or maybe below average in this case.
There is simply nothing new here and it even gets somewhat cliche at times. The plot definitely has some holes, and plenty of logic flaws, and the whole thing just feels very sloppy in some parts. The movie could really have benefitted from more realism and attention to details.
The ending is really a letdown too, and we are left with 95% of the movie becoming completely void with no resolution whatsoever. There really was no suspense to it thanks to some clumsy directing, and the whole thing just seems very random because of it.
The acting was OK but the characters really weren't. We never really get to know them much at all, which is terrible in a movie like this.
Overall a huge disappointment. I wish people would watch more diverse movies, so they would stop hyping mediocre movies like this.
Terrible plot "twist" at the end ruined what was already a bad movie. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
Awful movie.
It's not clever at all. In fact, it's a very basic movie with a bad and overly simplistic story, bad and very flat acting, awful pacing and considering the "puzzles" and the plot twists are also awful - the movie just get boring.
The ending is also annoying in that it pushes christian values and vilifies others.
I have not read the books, and maybe they are better, but this movie is just bad in almost every way. Avoid.
Ridiculous plot, childlike dialogues at times, flat acting and awfully generic. If you have already seen any space movie with a monster then you have seen this. Though the movie you saw was hopefully (and probably) better than this. Stay away.
Really wonderful movie.
For once we see two guys in love where the movie doesn't shove gay stereotypes down our throats. The characters are realistic and the story is really emotional.
Heath was truly an exceptional actor.
This movie is really crazy. Crazy awesome too.
Very creepy movie. The way everything is set up and filmed, it just feels extremely unsettling. The mystery in itself is introduced right away, and then it just latches on to you and keeps you craving the answer all the way up to the end.
But do you get the answer? Well. I'd say not really. But in some ways I'd say it doesn't matter much in this movie because the ride there was pretty intense. Which is what horror is all about at its core anyway. The lack of a crystal clear resolution may be a bit annoying, but at the same time it upholds the mysterious tone set throughout the film and it leaves you wondering a bit. Anyway, pretty cool movie.
Boring in theory, epic in practice. Loved this movie.
Horrible movie. Poor acting and it's too simple and patronizing overall.
Also, what's up with these american movies wanting to always have a scene where people applauds and cheers a rescue they watch on monitors? This movie even has more than one such scene!
If you, like me, believed this was something more special thanks to the hype, trust me and just avoid this.
The most boring movie I've ever seen. A cheap "documentary" where everything is explained through "interviews". Don't watch it.
One of the worst movies I have ever seen, and definitely the worst movie of this year for me so far.
This is one of those movies where it's a bit bizarre how it is even sold in the wild. I can not in my wildest imagination believe that anyone, of any age, with any interests that this could appeal to. And I don't say this lightly.
I mean the movie just fails in every aspect. It's so poorly made (acting, camera work, pacing etc) that it almost felt like a parody of sorts. After the first 20-30 minutes I thought it was some sort of art-movie because of this, and that I just didn't quite "get it" yet. But as the movie went on (and on and on - I swear this thing feels like it's 4 hours long), I slowly realized that the movie was just that awful. And after that realization, the movie got downright painful to watch. I barely made it through the last 30 minutes.
It's also not one of those movies where it's a "so bad it's good" type of thing. Because of it's subject matter and because of it's complete disregard to any form of quality, it just got really annoying. If it tried to be funny and/or artsy, it simply missed the mark by an immense amount.
And frankly, considering the subject matter of the movie, it's pretty astonishing how it does not manage to convey even a slight sense of a coherent or relevant message anywhere. Honestly, I don't even remember the last time I saw such a pointless movie. It's also not a horror movie by any sense of the word. It didn't even have scares, not even in the simplest of form. Actually, I'm not even sure what genre this should count as, considering the almost non-existent content in it. Oh, and I have to do this; even the damn sound is awful. And I don't care about sound. Oh well.
I will end this by saying that it's not often I truly believe that I have "wasted my time" with a movie. Almost always there is something to be had for it, even if it is sometimes laughter. But this time I can actually say that I feel like I lost a little bit of my life. I strongly urge anyone to avoid this garbage of a "movie".
Cool movie that has that distinct 90s feel. It has some twists and I doubt you'll predict the ending of this.
I think people just doesn't get this movie.
For me, this was the best of the trilogy. Why? Because it is the most clever of them all. The first was just an overhyped "OK" movie, and the second one was pretty bad. They both had a serious tone, yet it always seemed the director was messing with everybody with those ridiculous taglines etc. And here we finally go full circle in this franchise. All seriousness is stripped away and it's just a full out onslaught of cheesyness, jabs at critics, jabs at the franchise itself, jabs at fans, jabs at the actors (the main actors here are the same as in the previous two movies but as other characters) and the result is just downright hilarious. Dieter Laser is very good and very funny here. For some good measure we also have some porn acting (I mean one of the main characters is actually a porn star).
And now add the grossness from the first two films and multiply it by two and shove that into the film. The result is pretty spectacular. The movie is much more gross than the previous ones and yet you find yourself laughing out loud instead of being repulsed most of the time. It's very effective and entertaining and I actually wish the entire franchise would have been like this instead.
The plots banality has also been cranked to eleven in this and is as over the top as the rest of the movie. It fits really well.
Bottom line is that this movie never takes itself (or anything really) seriously, and that's what makes this a rather excellent closer to an otherwise mediocre franchise.
Intriguing and suspenseful little mini series. The acting is great (Charles Dance steals the show of course), and it has a simple yet very interesting plot. It really kept me wondering what was going on, with a pretty unexpected ending.
That's just the thing though - the ending was pretty unexpected - almost to the point where it just seemed somewhat random. I mean, I'm not sure how that ending was 100% plausible, and it's not like the show tried to convince us otherwise either. But the show was about suspense and it really delivered there.
I just saw this movie for the first time, and it made it into my top 20 worst movies ever. And honestly, of all the "psychological thrillers" I've seen, this may very well be the worst of them all.
About this movie, the concept is OK but it has one of the most ridicoulus and unbelievable stories I have ever witnessed in any movie of all time. It's also one of those movies where you try to ignore it but the movie just keeps shoving plot holes, inaccuracies, and bad dialogue in your face, until it's just shockingly bad.
The acting is also spotty, the characters are completely lifeless, there is literally almost no emotions portrayed here except overacted anger (very out of place, and sometimes even becomes comedy material, like the bathroom scene) or very bad crying woman scenes.
The main hero is good at literally everything, and he randomly throws some of those manly-man tantrums every once in a while like "I'm having a fucking bad day man!". Cool eh?… ok honestly the main guy is very annoying. Actually, the whole cast is kind of annoying and it's hard to sympathize with any one if them. And we never get to know anything really about their personalities. Despite the fact that, considering how the movie turns out, that would have been very interesting.
Overall the movie is very clumsily made, and feels very amateurish all the time. It's also very cheesy at times, and the acting surely doesn't help here. The standard "what do you want from us!?" scene is a good example of this, and it almost drove me to laugh out loud. Such things keeps this movie from ever becoming intense or suspenseful, and not even once did I care who the murderer was or about the (very bad) "twist".
It pretty much goes without saying that the ending was very poor and clumsy too, but I must point out that the "surprise" at the very end is so predictable that I really wonder what they were thinking there. Everyone must have seen that coming.
Overall, it felt like they didn't put much thought or effort into this at all, and just assumed the main audience of this would be complete idiots. Well, it seems they were right, judging by all the praise this gets.
Could have been much better. Interesting story, but it gets a bit messy and the ending is terrible.
Honestly. I get what the movie was going for but... it is way too simplistic. The whole science part of it was seriously underwhelming. And the characters motives for doing what they do, seems a bit flimsy after a while. The acting is also not the greatest. And I expected much more from the twist as well. Funnily enough the twist is exactly like they say in the movie, too simple.
The science stuff and the magic is unfortunately what could have made this movie super interesting, and it is barely explored. Disappointing.
Not as good as the legend has it. I loved it as a kid though.
It's still good if you're looking for a bizzare and outlandish action flick with small bits of both intentional and unintentional comedy.
I really like this movie for what it is. Rather enjoyable and gives quite a few chuckles. Well worth seeing.
I found this movie really interesting and enjoyable. The movie has such details that you don't see today and much more creativity than many movies. It also has that 90s feel to it.
It really dares to be ambitious and amazingly it still manages to look pretty good, 20+ years after it was made. It feels so grand and well made. It is absolutely worth a watch!
One of the absolute best movies ever made. It has such a charm and atmosphere and also a strong and good message. And also one of the best plot twists ever.
Not sure what has caused this movie's bad reputation, but it's actually very good. Don't let the reviews fool you. The animation is good, the voice acting also, the characters are great and for once pretty interesting. It's also pretty funny, not only for kids. Actually, it reminded me of zootopia a bit with the style.
One of the better movies in this genre. See it, and make up your own mind.
Much better than I expected. It's pretty original for what it is, and has a great ending.
The acting, directing and general quality of this movie is pretty much top notch. I guess that the only thing I found a bit lacking was the scariness. I mean the movie is creepy and all, and it gets pretty intense at times too, but it definitely could have been scarier.
Anyway, great movie if your into exorcism stuff in horror flicks.
