The Tunnel: Season 1

1x09 Episode 9

In terms of suspense, it's as good a (partial) culmination of a season's worth of thriller television as one could hope for. In terms of the visuals as well, Thomas Vincent's direction seems a cut above his predecessors', his collaboration with DP Wojciech Szepel really singing. I can't quite get past the iffiness of the whole sins-of-the-father thing being the villain's main motivation, though. The labyrinthine excesses of his scheme can be waved away by the fact that this man clearly isn't well, but the writers aren't doing enough to distance themselves from the notion that infidelity is in fact a transgression so vile that it might warrant biblical retribution. To be clear, I'm not saying that they want us to think that Karl Roebuck deserves the wrath visited upon him, but their use of the idea has a carelessness to it that – keeping in mind that I still have the actual conclusion left –leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
