Ultimately, a story that existed only for the episode-to-episode suspense. Which it did well, to be fair, but... never did I feel like it was upfront about its exploitation, whether of the various political sore spots highlighted by the villain, or the outsized fallout from his grief. The obfuscation necessitated by the plot inadvertently also contributed to an expectation of meaning. In the end, there was none, beyond the connection made between two people. That's not nothing, of course, but it's just a default, a byproduct of casting a couple of brilliant actors in your lead roles, and letting them do their thing.
