Kudos to Kieran Culkin for making Roman so despicable and endlessly punchable in this episode.
The future of a country boiled down to petty little tyrants with daddy issues. Kendall destroying democracy because his little sister lied to him is crazy is peak Roy children.
I wish I hadn’t thought this would be the “most shocking episode” so I could have enjoyed it more. The whole time I was transfixed from start to finish, but I kept waiting for something more shocking than episode 3. A populist won, we’ve literally all seen it before.
Shiv asking her cousin if he finds her attractive. :shushing_face:I think if Shiv had actually tried to talk to the Jimenez camp about killing the GoJo deal she could've gotten something. But she didn't. She’s as complicit as her siblings. She still wants the GoJo deal going through, and was willing to risk America for it. This episode showed that she would betray everything she professes if it means she gets ahead.
It’d be real funny if Tom actually ends up in jail after his previous jail scare.
“Couldn’t I get a sniff of even a little guy? Organize a little coup, down in old Peru? Put me in a van to Tajikistan? Couldn’t I just be our fun guy in Uruguay?”
"Some people just can't cut a deal"
The pacing of this episode was crazy good I couldn't take my eyes off the screen even for a moment. It felt so real and tangible.
This was an absolutely thrilling and horrifyingly fun episode. As a fan of politics, this episode is absolutely fascinating, a realistic imitation of election night, with a more nihilistic and corrupt vision of our current political and mainstream media system. There will be a lot to unpack from both the political and the personal angles. There's a lot here for everyone to enjoy--or fear, depending on your political persuasion.
Thailand had a pivotal general election for the House of Representatives and next Prime Minister on Sunday, so this episode feels beyond timely and real-time anxious for me. Roman's slime is through the roof this hour, gosh. And amidst the through-the-roof tension, two great comedic moments: the pollster's wasabi + Greg's lemon water slapstick, and the old guards dissing "Connor was running for president?" Could have used more of their commentary this ep.
A tumultuous episode. Each Roy has shown that they can be the next Logan but in this episode we are clearly seeing how Kendall and Shiv are not capable of being him, in a good way. Like when people say they are practicing empathy and becoming centrist or left as a result, we see how Ken thinks about his kids in Menken's America and is heavily conflicted. Shiv was already the left most of the siblings but she also has stake in the election with her being married and her connection with Matsson. It's very much that Roman is the new Logan, has no connections, no dependents, no attachments - can think only about the business and whatever needs to be done to get that to happen. His jokes too, he's always said some unhinged stuff but everyone knew he's just fucking around. But in this episode no is reacting to his jokes like they are jokes, they come off as real hateful and insensitive remarks that only one other character in Succession could say.
Honestly, I need Greg to be a whistleblower and just end them all. I also need the writers to know how unhinged yet appropriate Tom's "Is that even true" line was; he's absolutely desensitized to Shiv and can't even tell if she's being real or not anymore.
Ending sequence of Tom sending it and everyone just very hesitant felt like everyone but the top brass at ATN were thinking about what their life is going to be like - and actually, that's kinda what a lot of us felt like too when Trump got elected.
Just superb. Sneakily one of the best single episodes of this show. Incredible pacing and balance in the script, exciting and tense throughout, good comedic moments, and great payoff.
Incredible pace until they suddenly pull on the handbrake for a moment between Tom and Shiv.
The silence, importance and heartbreak of what felt like a vacuum inside this episode.
Brilliant.
"I danced with an old man. He didn't want to dance, but they made us dance. He was so confused. I drank things that aren't normally drinks." Best line on television, ever?
When we see the reality of 2023, the episode becomes very funny. All the ideological projection made in this fourth season reminded me of the "basket of deplorables".
Wow. This season gets better with each episode. What a great show. Love it.
This episode seems inspired by the time Fox News called Arizona and ended up pissing off Trump and his supporters. With the parties switched.
I still don’t understand what goes on in Connor’s head. Every time he’s on screen he’s doing or saying something pathetic. Roman sucks at being CEO and I think Shiv/Kendall would’ve made for a better combo.
On another note, the dialogue of this show always feels so authentic. The characters are perfectly written.
Ken setting Roman up to take the fall for election meddling?
The constant stuttering of almost all the characters is pissing me off. Are americans talking like that now IRL?

"Greg, do not put any more lemon water or wasabi in his eyes!"
