Star Trek: Season 2

2x07 Catspaw

Star Trek's Halloween episode is kind of awful. The spooky haunted house vibe should have been fun but it's all very silly. Some of the dialogue is funny, though, and the "giant" cat wandering through an obviously miniature set was a cheesy highlight.

This episode is dumb, and I love it! "ooh housecats wandering around miniature castle sets... spooky!"

Was Chekov wearing a beatles wig? His hair did not look at all natural.

I refuse to say much about this episode. It's awful, silly and boring. Plus, it looks incredibly cheap. Most mystery episodes were always silly - even in later iterations of the franchise - but those sirens/witches/cats? WTF? That's even worse than Voyager's Threshold. And Kirk does what he always does: fist fighting, groping women (who does he think he is? Sean Connery in a Bond movie?). Plus, the occasional racism: sure, Sulu is into martial arts (he showed that before), 'cause he has the funny eyes. Gosh. What's next? McCoy likes whiskey and skirts, Chekov is a borscht chef and a chess grandmaster, and Uhura is into vodoo and javelin hurling?

I'm torn in this episode. It wasn't all that good in some ways, but very enjoyable in others. I think the problem is they didn't really commit to the episode. To make this episode really work, it should have been done up in full horror movie glory. Nothing was truly scary and the crew never once looks really put off by anything they experience. Hanging a few cobwebs on an otherwise immaculate hallway, or having a well lit dungeon, or fog that is thick but not thick enough, all indicate a lack of commitment to the episode and it ultimately shows.

That aside, the two villains are somewhat interesting. I liked both characters for the most part. The cat was fun, especially when it told Korob he wasn't being a good host. So funny considering it is out of place with the treatment both landing parties got.

The short comings may have been expense, but I really suspect the writers/directors/producers didn't know how to do this episode without risking turning people off from the show. It was potentially dangerous to do a full pulp horror episode in a pulp sci-fi show, so I wonder why they even bothered.

"Very bad poetry, Sir" - Mr Spock

Also in this episode Captain Kirk waves his magic wand at a giant pussy...

How did I randomly get to this episode for a first time watch on Halloween? Kind of a creepy coincidence.

If there is such a thing as a forgettable Star Trek episode this falls into the category. It's downright laughable.

At first you don't know if you should take it serious at all. They used every scare they could think of, only it wasn't scary. Then you learn of those aliens and that they are possibly the precursor to what could have been an invasion of the Universe (again, I must add). Which could have been the interesting part. "Could" being the operative word.

And when you see them in the end, in their natural form, you're pretty sure this can only be meant as a joke.
