Well, Commodore Decker was a bit of a maniac, wasn't he?
Loved the design of the planet killer, just a bit old crazy thing.

  • Annoying overacting by the Commodore. It's nice to have someone else in the big chair, though. You don't like it 'cause that guy's different but he turns out to be a determined captain anyway. It's the "Jellico effect".
  • Can't the God Doctor declare him unfit for duty? I mean, he's obviously traumatized.
  • Plot: I like. High stakes. Nice team-work. Great FX (for the 60s). Great technical/strategic concept (obviously a comment on the Cold War). Two starships in one frame! As far as "action episodes" go, this is a great one.

Well, this is one of the episodes that probably gained the most from the remastering. This was the episode with the most SFX in the second season. The Planet Killer looks great, much more vibrant inside. And the damaged Constellation looks great, too.

Alltogether a thrilling action episode that also has great acting by Windom as Decker who apperently didn't like to work on Star Trek.

Star Trek did the Death Star before it was cool!

I am truly impressed by the ever increasing improvements in camera work w.r.t. the Enterprise this season. The first season is pretty monotonous in the views of the Enterprise, but we are seeing some good panning and rotation that feel far more realistic than we see in even the tNG, Voyager, and Enterprise which all seem to regress to season 1 types of shots.

"Promoted to your level of incompetence." Is a perfectly fitting phrase to describe the Commodore. No wonder he lost his ship. What a frickin idiot!

So, McCoy needs to provide medical records to declare the f-tard unfit for duty, but Spock can just declare it? WTF? Seems to me the senior medical officer should be the one to do that and everyone else would have to provide records. That is just retarded.

And then the Commodore doesn't even try to detonate the shuttlecraft and instead just kills himself. Sorry, Kirk, but you are wrong. You are better off without this pathetic shell of a man. He was destroyed when he lost his crew. He has been Nemo ever since, on a revenge/suicide mission.
