After Austin is imprisoned by the Mexicans, Houston is appointed commander-in-chief of the Texas forces in their fight for freedom. When Houston's orders are ignored, the Alamo falls. However, he rallies his forces and engages a much larger Mexican force under the wily Santa Ana, in a battle in which he employs brilliant military strategy.

The issue nevertheless gains strength and momentum when 22,000 men sign the ladies' petition. It eventually passes the New York State Legislature and becomes law. The husbands of Mrs. Stanton and Mrs. Bloomer sign for relief, only to find that their wives are in the midst of a new campaign—to win voting rights for women.
