Much better than I expected it to be!
This is a well made slasher, surprising it didn’t get a sequel.
Makeup and special effects made by the master Tom Savine are really great as usual. It’s a shame that the killer’s full appearance is only shown in the ending, which causes impact for sure (you’re not really expecting THAT much of an ugly face). The problem with this choice is that it makes the kills somewhat boring throughout the movie. We don’t get their full potential due the fact that the killer can’t be seen by the audience.
The killer has a look that is different enough so it can get some spotlights. He's got a cool origin story, a creepy look and his killing weapon is also a good choice. All of this, makes the film feel a little bit more fresh.
I liked the acting, it is better than most of these films. We have Jason Alexander and Holly Hunter among the cast. Always cool seeing famous actors while they were young starting their careers and doing these types of movies.
Rick Wakeman is responsible for the soundtrack and simply putting, it’s awesome. There’s no way to dislike it.
The pacing is kind of slow, I got bored a bit. Certainly a good slasher though, recommended.
ai yi yi... Why do I keep watching this tripe? I guess "back in the day" (that would be the late 1970's - 1980's) movies like this were all the rage but it's hard for me to comprehend this pablum being considered "good" even back then. The acting was so incredibly bad, the dialogue, the script, the entire storyline...I kept wondering whether this was supposed to be a real "horror movie" or was it pure spoof? Sadly, back in the day (1981), this was (I assume?) considered a genuine "horror movie"; today it comes across as a cheap version of a spoof of the plethora of teen camp slasher films back then. Leah Ayres, as "Michelle", is as awful and overbearing as she was in her Bloodsport role opposite Jean Claude van Damme. Apart from her, there's not a single character that you can even buy into...and sadly, you could only get attached to her character in the hopes that she would be the recipient of the most violent, gruesome death of all. Not even the "bully" (Larry Joshua as "Glazer") could pull off his role... Oh my gosh, I could keep going on what a steaming pile of tripe this was but why bother? Just... I don't even know why this was listed on the "Video Nasties" list unless it was the few shots of boobies... (and trust me, that's all they were: tiny boobs not even worth seeing) The "kills" were ridiculous...some burned-up dude is going to take out an entire raft of somewhere around 10 teenagers, using only a pair of garden shears, while they all scream and cringe in horror and never even try to fight back OR escape.... SMH. Just do yourself a favor and give this one the ol' skiperoo... You'll thank me. This was truly awful.
So I finally watched this 80s slasher..some positives being the raft boat scene was gory as hell and Tom Savini done a great job on the make up effects. It’s an odd cast including young up and comers like; Jason Alexander.
However, multiple scenes of teenage boys trying to force girls to have sex with them.. then the girls are killed off first as if it’s a punishment for them not opening up.. guess this is a Weinstein flick after all! Very similar to Friday the 13th, so I guess if your a Jason fan this one is for you. I’m not a massive fan of the original Friday the 13th, I’d probably say this was as good as it to be honest, both fairly average. Although Friday the 13th went on to make better movies and became iconic, the burning could of probably done with a sequel, it had the elements there for one.
I must admit that I fell asleep for about 10 minutes while watching this movie, but I woke up at the perfect moment, the famous killing scene, and I felt both confusion and fear. I mean, imagine waking up to that!
Also, I was so shocked to see a young Jason Alexander and Holly Hunter before their careers peaked.
Great 80”s slasher if your tired of P.C films and want to be fe minded of a time we just wanted to be entertained watch this puppy.
It was ok. Anything you would expect from 80s slasher movie. The plot was pretty decent.

It was a real 'camp' ride, and I was pleasantly shocked to see Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) with hair, Holly Hunter, Fisher Stevens (everything) and Brian Backer (Fast Times at Ridgemont High). Sadly, I was distracted from all the fun by the opening credits which proclaimed loud and boldly that Harvey Weinstein had both written and produced the film, which made me wonder how the young starlets appearing in the film were treated. Also, the 3 scenes where men forced themselves on said starlets were very awkward, as a result.
