Whether you like musicals or not, Singin' in the Rain is a musical classic that should be enjoyed by everyone
Here is my quick review:
[Like]
+ Beautiful and Memorable Choreography: Keep an eye out to the Magical "Singin' in the Rain" and the Acrobatic "Make them Laugh" section
+ Superb performance and chemistry between the cast (Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, and Jean Hagen)
+ Music and score are pure ear candy
+ Brings forward the idea of when Hollywood was transitioning from Silent Movies to Talkies
+ Considered by many as the best Hollywood musical of all time
+ Comedy also adds to the magic of the screenplay. (The microphone scene is priceless)
[Dislike]
- Lina's voice ;)
Plot Complexity:
Easy to comprehend
Best Movie Quote:
Lina. She can't act, she can't sing, she can't dance. A triple threat.
A wonderfully fun and happy musical. The dance numbers are great and the music is catchy. Makes me want to go on a musical binge and rewatch La La Land.
I'm clearly in the major, major minority. Honestly though, I didn't enjoy this.
It's certainly worth noting musicals are probably my least favourite genre, but I'm still more than capable of finding entertainment with them - e.g. 'The Greatest Showman', 'The Sound of Music' and others.
'Singin’ in the Rain', however, simply didn't connect with me. There's one, maybe two, good songs that I had already heard, while Gene Kelly (Don) is solid fun in the lead role. The premise, minus the music, is actually very interesting, what with the silent film transition era. Given it's a musical, though, they don't delve as deep into that as I wanted.
None of the songs, aside from the previously alluded to "Singin' in the Rain", landed well with me, I kinda found them a chore to sit through to be frank. Elsewhere on the cast, aside from Kelly, I found Debbie Reynolds (Kathy) alright but Donald O'Connor (Cosmo) a little irritating - he tries too hard, for my liking. Jean Hagen (Lina) is likewise a tad annoying, though that's intentional with her to be fair.
I will acknowledge that the film, aesthetically, looks excellent. I wish I liked it more overall, but I just didn't. Do feel free to ignore me!
This trio was undoubtedly top-notch! So glad I watched it, and the music numbers were just incredible. The best part had to be the end at the theater premiere!
Why, this is the gayest picture I ever did see! In the “happy” sense of the word, of course :smirk:
"Cosmo : Talking pictures, that means I'm out of a job. At last I can start suffering and write that symphony.
R.F. : You're not out of job, we're putting you in as head of our new music department.
Cosmo : Oh, thanks, R.F.! At last I can stop suffering and write that symphony."
:D
The title alone will have you humming the song.
Saw this at ace hotel theater, front row balc. Good even with crazies surrounding me. Lady to my right was taking her phone out to take pictures of the screen!!! What the hell?!
view again, possibly the best musical of all time, brilliantly remastered
I didn't enjoy this as much as other musicals.
perfect movie for Christmas :-)
The tagline 'What a Glorious Feeling' really sums it up for me. This is the movie that got me to realize, as a young teen, that every old movie wasn't boring (something I would continue to experience the more old movies I saw).
My only complaint is that there's a musical number that far overstays its welcome, but even so, they make a joke about it afterwards, so it's not tainted in my mind. It's genuinely funny, the songs are a blast, and the characters and situations they put themselves into are entertaining. Plus, the setting is really interesting.
Humor, music, songs, dance... everything perfect. The film is still entertaining after 70 years. :)
The only way I can explain it: fun! I had such a great time with the characters, the songs and even some of the old timey lame jokes. Really enjoyed it. Only thing is that the story is a bit predictable, but it doesn’t matter. It deserves to be an all time classic!
Rated a Connor 5, normal 7
Like an undelivered Valentine's day card, I don't get the love.
Full disclosure, I don't like musicals, and this is kind of why. First of all, I find the idea that people stop whatever they're doing and suddenly break into song and dance so artificial that it pulls me out of the film every time.
Honestly, the first two acts of this were bearable (especially as many of the songs are a natural part of the story, like people singing at a birthday party).
But then, when they decide to change the movie within the movie to a musical and just track on random musical crap with no relationship to the story in progress, Singin' in the Rain lost me.
(Still, I had no idea that Downton Abbey: A New Era stole their entire central plot from this movie! Crazy stuff.)
My favorite musical movie. It is simply perfect!
This is one of my all time favorite movies! Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds are amazing together. The chemistry is great, the singing and dancing is amazing. There are great original songs. But even more than any of those things, this movie is hilarious! There are unforgettable characters and a witty humor that is irresistible! For me, this is a must-see movie for any and everyone.
