I liked it. It kept my interest all the way through. More than endgame and infinity war did.
Good dialogue and interesting characters. Something new for Disney’s marvel.
I'm glad that Marvel is authentically increasing the diversity of their main characters. The landscape shots and the fight choreography were satisfying to watch. However, the story wasn't very compelling, which made it difficult to empathize with the characters. As an Asian American myself, I'm excited to see how Shang-Chi will fit into future MCU productions.
It’s such a so-so. I know superhero origin stories can only get so interesting but this literally took me a year to finish watching.. wouldn’t even have picked it back up if not for Tony Leung.
The featured review on TMDB is so weird. How can someone watch this movie and think "this isn't trying to educate me on any subject at all"?
Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung Chiu-wai are the real stars here.
After a year since I've seen it, the Xu Wenwu vs Ying Li fight scene is the only memorable part of the movie.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a thrilling adventure film. When he’s attacked on a bus by agents of the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi attempts to track down his sister, knowing that they will be going after her next, and learns that his father is searching for the mythic city of Ta Lo. Simu Liu and Awkwafina both deliver strong performances and have good comedic chemistry together. And the action scenes are exiting and fun (if not a little rote). Also, the CGI is well-done, with some interesting creature designs. However, the plot is rather thin and the characters are a bit one-dimensional. Yet despite a few weaknesses, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is another solidly entertaining Marvel film.
That was entertaining enough. It changes a bit from the regular Marvel stuff, probably more if you've never been exposed to Chinese style. However the pacing is pretty bad, most of it is too slow / too long.
Best part is definitely the martial arts fights that are top level. The fights with the rings are somewhat ok. SFX for the final fight are a bit below what would have been needed.
The story itself is a bit lacking as well as the family drama that definitely feels as it could have been handled better.
Shang-Chi himself is interesting as a character, though the way he's becoming basically the only useful fighter of the end fight is a bit out of nowhere, he'll be less interesting as a hero.
The Kate character is almost OK as comic relief but basically useless otherwise. Why would Wong ask her to come at the end ?? That's just endangering civilians. And even as comic relief, she is totally eclipsed by Ben Kingsley's destitute Mandarin (and Morris) that is just stellar. The best idea of the movie that also serves as slightly anchoring this in the MCU.
It's called "legend of the 10 rings" but we literally know and learn nothing about the rings. Assuming they will play a role later, Sones of Power style ?
Holy shit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings exceeded most of my expectations :clap::clap: It was steeped in so much culture and history in comparison to most other superhero origin films like are you kidding?? Talk about flavour.
I think my only criticism is that it fell back on such an unoriginal and archaic trope surrounding Li and her significance in the plot, just to give the two male leads some emotional angst and drive :grimacing: THAT SAID it’s re-watch value is super high.
Tony Leung as Wenwu did such a masterful job nailing the absolute arrogance of the character, and he stole every scene for me. The fact that I got to watch him, Michelle Yeoh and Simu Liu play off each other so naturally felt so unbelievably major. The MCU struck gold with this cast
BONUS THOUGHT: I’d let Xialing beat me up in her illegal fight ring, and the 2nd post credit scene better mean we get to see more of her in the future. Also when she saved Katy from plummeting to her death I know all our asses shipped that don’t even lie.
Im confuse wasn’t his father an asshole conquer? Are we suppose to just forget about that?
Great fight scene in the bus
Ok thats answers my question about the dad being an asshole.
The Bamboo breaking was bullshit.
Also pretty stupid that he can beat his teacher after not training for 6 years. Hate when movies do that bullshit.
His father is a psychopath, he’s just pretending like everything is hunky-dory
So an evil man with powers comes to your village where you are suppose to protect and keep people from and you fall for that man?
Don’t believe a damn thing that man says. They just sucking up his lies lol dummies
Why take the car in couldn’t they just walk in like the father did?
“WELCOME TO JURASSIC PARK” lol
Am i suppose to feel bad for the psycho? Like he hasn’t killed 1000’s of families lol. Text book hypocrite. This is how wars continue, someone somewhere does something someone else thinks they deserve revenge but the one that started it is always the most righteous
All and all. This is by far the best Marvel movie since the first Iron Man :clap_tone3: everything was so well done.
Best Marvel movie I've seen since the last Spiderman, great action and effects, solid story and loveable characters.
First and foremost.! Awesome movie. Really beautifully made, not just the cgi but the martial arts to. Felt so living and moving.
After rewatching I even deleted my old comment. the movie is really very good, of course, it makes the same usual script mistakes from marvel, but otherwise it manages to be extremely fun. something that bothers me about the script is that it is so rushed, one hour we are learning about Wenwu's life, soon after Shang's situation is shown and suddenly he is attacked??? it's anticlimactic, the fight itself is well choreographed but the direction and visual special effects not so much. seriously, I don't know what happened with the direction and photography, at times it seems like I'm watching an American commercial (as a Brazilian I say that our commercials are a thousand times better than those from the USA), the camera movements are generic but at the same time the photography has this plastic blockbuster vibe where everything looks kind of fake. my favorite scene is Shang going to Katy's house listening to music, I don't know but it gives me a real/philosophical/cult movie vibe but in a way that's made to sell. well, the CGI is horrible in some parts (cars and landscape) and beautiful in others (CHINESE DRAGONS!!!). But at the same time it's all kind of colorless, damn it's two dragons, one good and one evil and the villain has more color than the good guy??? another thing that bothers me about the script is a lack of a villain, Wenwu doesn't frighten me and he's kind of right, not every villain is evil, but the movie tries to show that he is and fails at that (a little more violence would be nice here, but they chose to be violent in DS: MoM lol), so the first time I saw it I was like "wait, now he wants to KILL his father???". The final battle is also kind of emotionless and here it's a mix of everything wrong, the music, the direction, the editing and even the acting, no one seems really scared of a fucking soul-eating demon. the humor is very good on the other hand, Awkwafina is amazing, the return of Trevor as well as being funny, it's also a portrayal of perhaps the worst choice Marvel has ever made (after MoM) and Wong is… well, Wong (i love this guy). At the end of the day, it's one of the best Marvel Phase 4 movies and one of the best origin movies too, but kind of forgettable.
I confess that I didn't have high expectations for this movie. Perhaps it was the movie that I was least excited about in the last releases of the MCU. However, it surprised me a lot, it's a great movie.
Best Marvel movie by far
Just the right mix of goofy, magical, action and world building with a good family story. I liked it.
78 I Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings fulfilled the expectation almost at an optimal level. This film brings Marvel Cinematic Universe into a different area of film. We can see that in the action elements that this film has. It is different than average MCU films and better. There are not many Hollywood films that have great choreography. Shang-Chi's fighting choreography is at the same level as John Wick's.
But Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings did not take the inspiration from John Wick. Its action has more similarities with some Asian films such as Hero and The Grandmaster. Tony Leung who played The Mandarin also played the main character in The Grandmaster. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director did his homework perfectly to bring that Asian martial art into Hollywood
Every time the characters fight, they are like dancing with their enemies. Every punch, kick and dodge is very amusing to watch. All of those are supported by smooth camera movement that is much prepared by the people behind this film. The camera movement of this film is better than the other elements of cinematography in this film.
Shang-Chi has a beautiful visual but sometimes it felt too unreal. The visual effect is mostly good but at some point, it looks terrible. This film all out when making a scene about the Monsters. Never in mind, that there would be a Godzilla versus Kong scene in this film, well at least in its version. All of that magical creatures and monsters are interesting elements to add to Marvel Cinematic Universe. It could be a very big potential to enhance the story in MCU films.
The action element is the winner in this film, but we should also mention some funny moments that this film has. At first, it seem Awkwafina's character would be the funniest person in the room but instead, it was Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery. His appearance is so entertaining but also not overpowering the main character. Talk about the main character, Shang-Chi himself not getting much exposure in his film. But it is probably a good thing because the main focus of this film is how he got the ten rings' power. To make his father, The Mandarin has more exploration is a smart decision to introduce the audience to the power. But unfortunately, it was not fully successful.
The Mandarin is the worst written character in this film. He probably has a cool power but his motivation, goals, and behavior are badly written. Almost all of the action stuff at the beginning of the film are unnecessary to happen, he could simply ask and explained his children. His rushed and unwise decision made him a shallow character. It was such ashamed with that kind of character played by a legendary actor. The Mandarin live a thousand years but he is still unmatured and irrational. It was very unfortunate. But thankfully all of that bad writing was saved by the great action scenes.

Can't believe we got to see Fala Chen again, let alone on the big screen! :')
Gotta say, the bus scene was epic thanks to the fight sequences, camera angles and stunt effects. Tony Leung unsurprisingly stole the show. Simu Liu on the other hand, has the most stoic and flat expression. He needs some serious acting lessons.
Bad Movie
Bad plot
Just bad
Entertaining and a little funny. This is the most CHINESE movie I have seen since Tiger & Dragon.
Movie was disappointing ......too many things made no sense .First the fact that the Father was alive for 1000 years and was just a gangster is laughable . Then Shang plan to runaway and leave his sister is shameful. Then they utter lack of reaction from the crowd on the bus and again in the restaurant was just stupid. Outside of the story was just meh and Aquafina (lol) had absolutely no romantic chemistry with Shang..
Very nice! I wasn't expecting much but this was quite good :)
I liked the beginning the most. The dancing like fight choreography in the forest at the beginning was so awesome and unexpected. And then the bus scene followed that was really funny due to the commentary of that streamer.
IIRC it slowed a bit down after that. There was still quite some content but I lost a bit of interest in the story at times. Anyway, the fighting scene at the end was great again.
I really liked the CGI effects. Especially the powers of the rings and the Chi effects (controlling the air, etc.).
In the end the story didn't feel as meaningful/powerful as it could've been but it's still a good movie.
Didn't care about the story (the kind you forget the next day), the style of some fight scenes were ripped off from Crouching Tigger, Hidden Dragon and the Big Marvel Battle in the third act was just a CGI mess but apart from that, it was enjoyable.
Giving it 4 stars, because: 1. I gave 3 stars to Eternals, and this wasn't that better, and 2. being an asian Marvel movie, this should have been so much better, but it was full of clichés, and the plot was really boring and lame. Apart from this, the actors were great, however Awkwafina reminded me some asian youtubers which is not a compliment here.
So all in all, not that good of a Marvel movie, it can be enjoyable, but it is far from greatness.
So happy with this film, definitely worth watching.
I’m really pleasantly surprised by this. Good villain, Liu is excellent and the first act in particular is a knockout. It’s not going to win any awards, but it’s a well enough judged script, has surprising heart to spare and the fight scenes are excellent. Well worth the wait.
Bruce Lee did it better. ;) But seriously, it's a nice fairytale with a little forced added MCU inserts.
i guess this is just not for me.
Felt cheesy, boring and stupid. Absolutely no surprise in the script, it was almost a joke at that point.
Ok the CGI is good, and Ben Kingsley is amazing. But remove this and you have absolutely nothing, except a waste of time.
predictable & unoriginal.
best describes as mediocre.
Awkwafina & soundtrack were the highlights of this movie
Well again a Marvel character presentation film. The script and story is not surprising, the only original and that I loved are the action scenes (well, half), moving away in almost the entire film from the typical Marvel (powers, magic, etc.) and more close to a classic martial arts movie, but with Disney media. It is so good that the ending has let me down with so much CGI. Still very cool. Recommended.

Great film, I knew nothing about the story beforehand, but I really enjoyed it.

Wow. I didn't expect this movie to be this good, probably one of the best Marvel movies ever.
The setting, the characters, the union of the Marvel world with the mythological world was fantastic.
What a beautiful film.
It sounds kind of abstruse, I know. "Beautiful." But it is. From the beginning to the end I thought to myself: My God, this is beautiful to look at. Be it the fight choreography, which picks up speed at the beginning, then takes a time-out and climaxes in a wonderfully Asian atmosphere towards the end.
It was impressive to see how everything was captured. In glorious colours, with a soundtrack that is both classic and modern, this is where contemporary events in the form of streamers meet Far Eastern history and legends. The mix is so grandiose that I had tears of joy in my eyes.
The actors are thoroughly likeable and superbly chosen.
This Marvel film was once again "something different". Refreshingly new and a revelation for fans of Asian art.
I'm already starting to loose interest in Marvel movies and series (already totally done with DC low quality high budget trash), then this doesnt help much either. Black Widow was a huge disappointment, this is worse, although not as bad as black Panther. Shang-Chi is a bit too clearly aimed at the Chinese market. Perhaps if you're into the old legends of the East you might enjoy it. I didnt.
Movie was great, I enjoyed every moment of it besides the scene during the end credits, which I could not get whatsoever, but nonetheless it was quite an enjoyable movie!
Unlike any other Marvel film so far. In the best way. Fantastic action and beautiful visuals. A true love letter to East Asian cinema mixed with western styling.
Not really my kinda movie but I watched it because of Awkwarfina Katy, I think she's very funny the movie in general wasn't bad but I think it's more kids.
Did you ever want to watch a mashup of Dragon Ball + The neverending story + Iron fist + any Jackie Chan movie + Speed + House of flying daggers + Kung-fu panda + How to train your dragon + The chronicles of Narnia? Then you reeeeeeally need to watch this movie.
No? Well... do you have a couple hours to waste with a dumb, extremely predictable, but pretty cool anyway, Marvel movie?
Or... :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
damn son. the amount of excitement this movie gives.
Watched at home on Disney+. Looks spectacular on an LG OLED. Cinematography was on point. I did feel like the first half was better than the last. The cheesy father vs son dynamic & the attempted comic relief were often too cringy for me. The fight choreography was well done.
Many pros and cons, but quite predictable and silly.
6.2 as I'm a fan of the genre, but some of this stuff grows tedious.
Meeeh, not really that great. Story wise i was also lost pretty fast. And alot of CGI stuff
Great movie to watch while unconscious in a coma.
Choreography, wuxia stuff and cast are great tho.
Disappointing introduction of martial arts in the MCU that shines more in the first part than in a second part marked by the mediocre CGI. Constantly missing the epic plasticity of Yimou-Lee-Woo or the choreographies of Tony Jaa or Gareth Evans. Father-son conflicts are boring by now, but it's a pleasure to see Tony Leung as a tormented antagonist. Was it really necessary to introduce Awkwafina into the MCU universe?
Yet another hollywood movie in which an enemy from another dimension is waiting beyond the gate. Nice visuals but otherwise, boring.
There's some weird music choices in this movie. Also, it could've been a lot more polished. It doesn't flow as well as it think it does, so the emotional bagage is kind of hit or miss. And I wanted more Tony Leung. Sometimes it feels like he's being pushed to the side, even though he and his feelings are super important for the story.
Action scenes were pretty good. Wire-Fu >>>>>>
The overall action and acting thing was good but the movie in itself has a pace and a tone that doesn't feel right. The thing got lost between positive discrimination and inclusive universe. It is neither good nor bad ... watchable yet not enjoyable ...
:heart:x7
This was a solid MCU movie. The effects were great. There were a bunch of fun bits. Morris was as cute as a faceless button. It was a pleasant surprise to see Kingsley in this movie. There were a couple of slow spots, but overall this was a really good action movie.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
It was OK. A Kung Fu movie disguised as a super hero movie.
It’s obvious Marvel is setting up stuff.
It’s not a great sign if the most excited I got during this whole movie was during that 1st posts credit sequence.
'Shang-Chi' is the least MCU feeling MCU film so far. Thank god, although I kind of wish it was also shot on film to add an authentic grainy feel instead of this green-screen sheen that's so prominent in these MCU productions. The movie really picks up once they leave the United States as it turns into an amazing "Journey to the West" type adventure with lush environments and fantastical creatures.
Excellent movie. Great fight scenes and special effects.. Well worth a watch :ok_hand:
It's utter silliness, but so enjoyed it. Maybe it's just because there was kung fu in it?
Packs a lot of entertainment and fun. Outstanding performances played by the cast too. An excellent addition to the MCU.
Great movie Well put together. each actor played the role perfectly and gave it just enough comedy along with action..
An amazing, incredible movie! Recommended for everyone.
Tony Leung Chiu Wai could still get it
I was really surprised by this. I thought it would be a lazy origin story with some king fu fighting, but I was really surprised by the whole setting, music, the mystical elements, and the story. They did a great job not spoiling this movie in trailers, which is an art these days. The humor is good and balanced. It was really entertaining. Lastly, I watched this in the cinema in 4DX and that end fight with all those real life effects in the cinema was F***ING INSANE!
Hahaha it's a good movie I guess.
Main characters are good, some cgi moments feel unfinished, basic story, and another funny character, I was expecting something different, but it's entertaining.
Combines How to Train Your Dragon and Black Panther.
In a word ...
Zhuàngguān
8/10
Shang Chi's Sister And The Legend Of The Ten Rings would have been a better title for this movie, because she shows him up at every turn, which is what we have to look forward to going forward with the M She U, can't have a male led movie without a strong female character showing them up at every turn can we? of course, it's a movie with a mostly asian cast, so naturally the critics are as usual overhyping and overpraising it to the point of stupidity, plus, the actor playing Shang Chi is so thin skinned, he has taken to attacking certain youtube channels that dare to criticise the movie
I thoroughly enjoyed the action sequences. The cast, although limited, held their own fully. Simu Liu and Awkwafina were a perfect pair on screen
Loved every minute of it and the cameo appearances were fantastic, would happily watch again, well done Marvel
I liked how they are told, the fights, how they are linked to the MCU, I did not like that that character comes out again
It’s the LFC scarf for me :ok_hand_tone1:
It's always bloody rings, isn't it?
The first half of this movie is pretty bad all around, between the effects, the plotting and some of the performances. Tony Leung is effortlessly cool and brings a real presence to the film, he’s by far the best part of the movie, the fight choreography is also very well done. Simu Liu handles the action well and settles into the role by the end of the movie but weirdly enough he comes off very awkward when he’s trying to be “regular guy” in the first half, but that could be the bad script and plotting. Awkwafina is completely awful and her character is worthless, I assume she is there to kind of say “Well not every Asian person is magic, here’s a regular person”, which they don’t really commit to anyway. I will say that I really appreciated how bonkers the climax is and I have to say it isn’t something I’ve seen before so they got a lot of points by the end.
