Good film, not his best work but still a Tarantino classic. Definitely worth a watch.

Far too referential and self aware for my taste. I can't help but think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I knew nothing about its influences. I usually find color in film to be optional, but this is one of the few instances where I feel like the greyscale sequences were an actual downgrade.
This movie was much more disappointing than I remember. I first watched it as a kid at the age of around 10 years old, I am now 22 and I hadn't watched it until today since the first time that I saw it. When I was a kid, I loved the crazy violence and fight scenes because I had seen nothing like it and I thought it looked cool. But now that I am an adult, when I watch this movie, I see only try-hard fight scenes that look like the star wars prequels' lightsaber fights. This movie also has tons of plot holes, there are things that make no sense and there are scenes that defy the laws of physics. At one point in the movie, snow suddenly appears everywhere, it's as if in only a few hours, it changed from summer to winter but with absolutely no explanation. Also, apparently in the kill bill world, special magic swords can cut other swords like butter. There are so many japanese stereotypes that seem completely ridiculous. Also, guns exist in that fictional world but when people use swords, it's as if all the character forget that using a gun would be much more effective, though, after seeing so much ridiculous nonsense in this movie, I wouldn't be surprised if the protagonist was able to make the bullets bounce off her sword. That is how cartoonish this movie is. I know that Tarantino is famous for using a lot of crazy violence in his movies but in this one, it was so overused that it quickly started to look very fake. And, many characters are able to do things that they shouldn't be able to do just so the movie can happen. This movie can be entertaining but you basically have to shut off your brain completely when you watch it since its even less realistic than a superhero movie.
The only good things about this movie are the soundtrack, the acting, the animation, the japanese voices and a few funny scenes.
Overrated movie
What a sh**tty movie. Why isn't "Comedy" in the genres, as far as action, this was horrible, and laughable. The blood spatter effect is ridiculous. Well, Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this mess, so I guess I shouldn't have expected more.

I'm speechless as to how amazing this movie is. From an amazing soundtrack and sound mixing to gorgeous cinematography, this movie had me mindblown and I genuinely cannot express how well done this movie was. Even staying up until 3 am in my darkroom made it better, this has to be my all-time favourite movie by far.

Kill Bill, both volume 1 and 2, is absolutely gorgeous! The art direction is beautiful! The camera angles are perfect... just Gorgeous! The lighting, the sound, the dialogs... and of course, the details!
This movie is just perfect. It is a big compilation of the best samurai movies from the 70's (with a special Tarantino touch). If you like this genre you will love this film. There is not a single thing I would change in this movie.
Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill is a masterpiece and a staple in the history of action films. Uma Thurman as Beatrix killed it. Kill Bill is filled with insane and unrealistic action sequences full of style. The only major drawback I had was the overwhelming usage of style which got Tarantino written all over it. Overall a must watch movie for everyone out there.

One of my all time favorites and one of the best action movies ever made if you ask me. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 has Pussy Wagon sharp dialogue and comedy, a knife sharp catchy iconic score, butcher knife sharp characters, meteor hammer crushing blood and gore, and Hattori Hanzo sharp epic action sequences.
The music choices, camerawork, editing and captivating visuals create something uniquely stylish. The pacing is flawless and it's very entertaining there's no time to get bored, we even get bits of black & white and beautiful animation to change it up (would have taken a whole movie with that animation style). Love the wide shots over the rooms.
Every single character is a badass in this movie. Uma Thurman is perfect in the role and Lucy Liu makes for a satisfying villain. The story is as simple as it gets: revenge. A criticism would be the non-linear timeline, I don't think it was necessary at all. It's like it's trying to hide the fact that the story's simple by adding a "confusing" timeline.
The third act is one of my favorite third acts ever, it's just perfect, so much action and blood, has me smiling the whole time like a psychopath. The switch from colorful, black & white and black & blue keeps it visually interesting.
Love Tarantino. But what a chore this is to get through... In 20 years, I've tried twice before and this third time I've persevered.
Not looking forward to part 2 as this was bloated, uninteresting, self-indulgent crap.

I'm mixed on this one. Great cinematography, acting, writing, lighting, action, but there isn't much of a story here. It mostly relies on fighting scenes which are really long. I won't complain because it has a great style, but they are long. I wish that they focused more on building a story but I still had a fun time and I thought it was pretty great.

3 Thoughts After Re-Watching ‘Kill Bill’:
This is, hands down, Quentin’s masterpiece. None of his other films hold a candle. And to not include that Uma contributed to the majesty of all this would be a tragedy. She is an absolute force.
When I first saw the Vernita Green battle in my initial viewing at the theatre, I was floored. I just didn’t expect what this film was about to throw at me. I’ll never forget that feeling. It’s one I’ve wanted another film to offer again ever since — and I’m still waiting.
The music. My goodness. It just elevates this film even further. Every song for every moment was perfectly matched. Simply epic.
"Kill Bill: Vol. 1" is a pretty good film that sees an assassin plot her revenge against her ruthless employer, Bill, and other members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. While this film is highly entertaining, with great acting and cinematography, the level of violence in this one is excessive and cartoonish. It felt more self-serving than thematically appropriate. It's also hard to connect with the protagonist, given how ruthless she is and that her name remains a mystery in this first volume. I will say that the showdown between her and O-Ren Ishii was great, not feeling either anti-climatic or over-the-top at all, and perhaps the best scene of the film.
Overall, quality film for Tarantino, though not on the level of his previous films.

The most visceral, nonstop, gladly wanton orgy of violence I've ever seen, not to mention one hell of a stylish compilation of influence and homage. Like a cinematic Wanderlei Silva, this is an action picture that just does not stop throwing haymakers until it's finished, and I love it for that simple-minded dedication to its own nature.
Uma Thurman is surprisingly well suited for the role of the double-crossed professional killer on a blood vendetta, as she rampages from one gory smackdown to the next without lifting her icy mask for more than a wink and a nod. The plot is simple enough, with Thurman literally carrying a list of the five heads she's out to collect with her from scene to scene, but doubles down on thick atmosphere and detailed dossiers on every major player. Though it's sliced in half with all the abruptness of a katana slash, the story's split doesn't bother me a bit; in a way it's an appropriate intermission, as the two very different halves are able to stand on their own without getting in each other's way. Masterfully orchestrated chaos, it's impossible to turn away from the Bride's classic exaggerated fight scene with the Crazy 88s.
Very stylish with all the over the top action, blood and sound effects. I'm not a huge fan of martial art movies but this one is entertaining.
I think this film may be Tarantino at his best. The great thing about this film is that it takes the audience and puts them into a myserious and colorful world that Tarantino has created for us. For years I had kept this movie in the middle of my to-watch list because I thought that it was merely a wannabe Bruce Lee movie. Not so. Tarantino, not unlike the Coen brotheers, is the kind of moviemaker that makes the movie that he wants to see and isn't interested if you like it or not.

Not as good as Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, but definitely a good movie.

Absurdly stylish and blatantly absurd, Kill Bill Vol. 1 was exactly what I expected. Plenty taken here from classic Japanese film, with a twist, I felt like I was watching an anime. Looking forward to Vol. 2.
Kill Bill is pure and unadulterated fun projected on screen in spectacular fashion. Tarantino pays tribute every step of the way to his favorite genres and directors, which act like nuggets of celebration to the accomplished viewer. The revenge is satisfying, the humor is abundant, the characters are brilliant, and the storytelling is masterful.

This movie is pretty much a hit or a miss depending expectations. If you don't like it in tje first 20 mins...you won't like the rest of it either. So in that regard let me possibly save some time. :sweat_smile:
I personally can't take anyone serious who rates this belos a 7. It's one of those movies that even if you don't like it... You should be able to see the artistic cinematography for what it is.
To clarify, I can perfectly see why somebody would not like it and even turn it off. It's not for everyone.

That woman deserves her revenge and we deserve to watch it. I wish I could get a chance to watch The Whole Bloody Affair cut of Kill Bill because man I really enjoy it. Serving as a canvas for Quentin's desire to make a 70's kung-fu movie. Kill Bill Vol. 1 offers that up plus more. This is an amalgamation of so many genres: western; modern action; hints of noir; and even anime all wrapped up in an over-the-top martial arts Japanese-inspired drama. I can see how it's not everyone's cup of tea with the amount of blood and gore that often come with Tarantino films and the actual style can be somewhat niche. Simply on the cinematography alone though, I would say to give it a try and see if it's in your wheelhouse.

Great cast in a great movie. Have the Japanese dvd release also which does not switch to black and white during the fight scene. Which was only done to keep from getting an X rating.
Great homages, music, animation, subculture and violence flood the viewer's curiosity with the strongest entertainment. Although disappointed by the unconvincing Japanese performances of Sonny Chiba and GoGo, the assortment that the audience still received after the screening is quite unique, messy, but with the most pop visual sensation. Tarantino's signature plagiarism, with its elaborate use of several techniques, is akin to Pablo Picasso, Even though it is a plagiarism of "Lady Snowblood" it is still more than the original. The scene in which O-ren's head is cut open, which invokes Meiko Kaji's "Shura no Hana", is a violent depiction that will remain in the history of cinema.
Quentin Tarantino is one interesting filmmaker. I have seen this movie once before and I can’t say I loved it with that watch. Since that watch nearly a decade ago, my taste and appreciation for film has changed tenfold. Tarantino is one of the most unique directors, for better and worse, and this movie is no exception. It’s balls to the wall with style. Memorable scene after memorable scene. Is this my favorite of this style of movie? Not really. There’s a lot of revenge flicks out there that are more suited to my taste, but the creativity and flare on this movie is worth seeing and appreciating.

I can't remember any as aesthetically pleasing scene in any movie as Lucy Liu and her performance in the winter garden. Every move, look and gesture is perfect.
It’s basically a really simple genre film, but it’s stuffed with so many memorable action scenes, great characters, terrific music, dialogue, visuals and gore that it gets elevated to incredible heights.
It doesn’t suffer from the pacing issues that his film usually do, but Tarantino’s voice as a director can still be overly present and indulgent here and there.
To this day, I still find the bleeping of the bride’s name pretentious and unnecessary.
Other than that, it’s an absolute must watch.

Simple revenge movie with action choreography of a South-Indian (No offense!). Liked the O-Ren Ishii animated backstory and cliffhanger in the end, without which I would've skipped the vol. 2
Not even close to being Tarantino's best, but it can be definitely considered the most representative example of his style of postmodern pastiche of genres. It's easy to make references to "The Killing" and other "cool" films, but let's not forget that Tarantino here borrows from the worst grindhouse garbage and still manages to deliver solid entertainment full of memorable moments and characters. The originality is not in the references - it's in the ways languages that belong to apparently unrelated genres are blended together to create an over-the-top yet coherent world. We see chambara swordfight emphasized by spaghetti western music, animation sequences, and horror B movie special effects to tone down the gorey moments but still make them visually appealing, and it still feels like the same film.
The only problem is that the movie is far too long for a style-over-substance action film where a simple revenge story is used as an excuse to have videogame characters fight each other. Especially if we count the two volumes as a single work, a less disjointed and more concise structure would have helped. Useless divagations and non-linear narration are trademarks of Tarantino's films, but they don't seem to serve any particular purpose here, with scenes that could have lasted two minutes eating up huge portions of the running time and climaxes coming up a little too early than needed.

From writer/director Quentin Tarantino comes the ultimate revenge thriller, Kill Bill: Volume 1. A former assassin is betrayed and left for dead, but awakens from a coma to seek her revenge. Tarantino does an excellent job structuring the storytelling, and has written some amazing dialog that enriches the characters. His directing is also quite impressive, especially in how it’s able to incorporate different styles and techniques. The ensemble cast features Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, and David Carradine (who gives an excellent performance as a shadowy villain). And, the fight choreography is outstanding; delivering some incredibly dynamic and impressive martial arts sequences. Additionally, the soundtrack does a brilliant job at accentuating the tone and spirit of the material. Daring and unconventional, Kill Bill: Volume 1 is a remarkable action film.
Kill Bill is a very unique movie. It’s a an American made 70’s Samurai Movie that came out in the 2000’s. The Plot is good one of the best revenge movies ever. The writing is great like in all the Tarantino movies, the characters are well established and The Bride is great an iconic character. The Action is top- notch every action scene is very entertaining with the karate moves and katakana fighting. The soundtrack is good as well. It’s interesting how it fits in so many types of movies into this with the black and white scenes, the slow motion scenes, and animated scenes. The cinematography is great as well the Crazy 88 fight scene is one of my favorite movie scenes ever. It’s definitely the bloodiest movie I’ve seen it’s not realistic blood it’s far fetched and more for comedy but surprisingly really works. Overall it’s great and unique action movie that is one of the kings of cult classics.

Wow! What a movie! Classic Tarantino! The story is fabulous and different, written by a genius. Great cinematography and beautiful scenery transitioning between different views based on the story. Uma Thurman was great as the bride as were all the other actors. Tarantino has a way with his films and stories that are undeniably him. In this film you can see influences of other Japanese films, westerns and so much more. A must watch.
Det torde inte komma som en överraskning för någon att Tarantinos Kill Bill är en stilig tribut till klassiska asiatiska splatterfilmer. Den är blodig och vid sina ställen nästan alltför våldsam, men samtidigt erbjuder dess knivskarpa stridsscener några av de snyggaste koreografierna som någonsin fångats på film. Såväl den första volymen som den andra är dessutom utan tvekan Uma Thurmans absolut bästa rollprestation tillsvidare.
Till sin struktur liknar Kill Bill vid flera tillfällen en billig B-film, men detta är et medvetet val från regissörens sida och är därför inte en dålig sak. Tarantinos karakteristiska svarta humor, den icke-linjära berättarstilen och de ofta överdrivna karaktärerna ger filmen en alldeles unik touch. Även om berättelsen inte löper i kronologisk ordning ser Tarantino till att leda tittaren vidare med ett säkert grepp och man tappar aldrig bort sig. Filmen innehåller också några av de mes dimensionerade och utarbetade karaktärerna som Tarantino någonsin skapat.
Även Kill Bill ibland känns lite långsam är tempot alltid lämpligt och skådespeleriet, musiken och klippningen håller tittaren alert hela tiden. Såväl den massiva stridsscenen i filmen sista akt som den överraskande välgjorda anime-sekvensen hör till filmens mest minnesvärda ögonblick. SZA:s skiftande soundtrack lyfter filmen till nya höjer och överraskningen i slutet tvingar tittarna att sukta efter mera.
Det är inte speciellt svårt att förstå hur denna överraskande, ultravåldsamma och uppfinningsrika film blivit en så älskad klassiker. Man gör helt enkelt inte dylika filmer längre.
Don't know the amount of times I've seen this but everytime I do I'm quickly reminded why it's my favorite.

Really cool flick! Everything gets together really well: the disturbing and weird story, the soundtrack, the acting and the "overall feeling" of the movie. I would have rated it even higher hadn't there been the absolutely unnecessary 20 minutes of butchering O-Ren Ishii's yakuza army at the end of the movie...
