It’s an intense ride, greatly held together by a fine mix of music, sound effects and acting. The tension is intercut with some of the most humane and warm character moments so far. This is a wonderful mix of sci-fi adventure, thriller and mystery. The Enterprise and the orb play a long game, and we see just how calm and calculating Kirk can be in hot situations. The lengthy first act is followed by a marvellous final act onboard the mother ship.
