The Prestige

Just mindblowing. It's strange watching it the second time round knowing the secrets but it's a completely different but delightful experience. I do wish that I could watch films like these with fresh eyes sometimes though. Nolan's a genius. Simple.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

The style of this film is honestly the main thing I like about this film. But essentially that covers a lot of ground if we simply split a film into style and substance; the boundaries of which blur as each affects and is affected by the other.

As another reviewer mentioned, the essence of the style feels Wes Anderson-esque but set in a more modern, realistic world. I for one, extremely enjoyed this in the framing, camerawork, character styles, editing and story structure.

One thing I'm not sure about was the character of Earl. But as I think about it, maybe it's just because he wasn't the type of character I was expecting.

I can see why people wouldn't like this film but that's exactly why I do like this film. It's like someone who's unapologetically themselves - can't please everyone.

Just writing this review as made me up my rating by 1/2 a star.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

I really don't think this film is as bad as everyone makes out. I get that it was disappointing but I wouldn't say it's significantly worse than Attack of the Clones. At least this Anakin can act. It does seem more aimed at younger audiences but what's wrong with that? I feel like it appealed to the kid in all of us and let us have a little fun in the Star Wars universe.

The Office: 9x23 Finale

This marks my second time completing the show and if I thought that finale hit me hard the first time, boy was I wrong. Sobs, actual sobs were what I expelled during this absolute heart-felt conclusion for one of the greatest comedy shows of all time. At this point, I couldn't imagine my life not knowing these characters and I do feel like they are a real part of my life. Not having more episodes to watch feels like an empty piece of me, and I couldn't help but sneak a peek back at the very first episode to see how much everyone had grown and provide myself that little piece of comfort. Outstanding show and what a way to finish it.

Orange Is the New Black: 1x02 Tit Punch

Straight into getting to know more about Red, which I think is great so they don't exhaust Piper and make it all about her. This show is great for seeing every side to the story and why the inmates are who they've become.

Piper also gets some flashbacks which while usually used for dramatic effect actually flesh out what's happening in present time without having to be spoon fed ie making the lotion for Red, and how she would've known how to do that.

What are the chances of Piper and Alex being in the same prison? Actually knowing what I know about Litchfield, they don't seem to give a crap, so very high!

Legally Blonde

I watched this after I saw an article about it's feminism which I found really empowering. I was disappointed how Elle worked so hard for a boy that clearly didn't deserve her but after a while I realised that this was a pivotal plot point to show her journey as a character. I think it communicated great messages especially about how everyone should be taken seriously in their goals and that everyone's interests are important and everyone has something to offer. It's far from free of cliches but that doesn't take away it's position as a great film for empowerment.

Joy

This isn't anything like I expected from the trailer which gave the impression of a woman living many lives with a string of storylines abound in perhaps a convoluted plot. In reality, it's about a mop. That's marketing. It's about a mop made by a woman who keeps her dependant, dysfunctional family afloat without so much of a glimpse of time for any self-care. The characters are diverse and have depth, even if you did wanna punch them in the face. Jennifer Lawrence and the characters she plays are always an inspiration which is what this film was.

Supernatural: 2x01 In My Time of Dying

Wow, even though I knew Dean would survive, I still panicked for a bit. He proper showed some vulnerability. Although I didn't particularly like John, I'm sad for the boys. Shows how much he really loves them.

Gotta say again how much I love the different settings and themes of each episode. It's like Dean and Sam going into different horror films!

A Beautiful Mind

I love watching films with a twist the second time as seeing it knowing the secret is a completely different experience. This film is still gripping even though I know what will happen. John Nash's character has so much depth and Crowe's performance is delightful. He gives the character a vulnerability even when he's a danger to others which is a thought-provoking representation of schizophrenia. As gorgeous as Jennifer Connelly is, I don't think her performance was outstanding in terms of other supporting roles I've seen from others in other films unfortunately.

Saw 3D

Wow, what a difference to the rest of the series. Honestly, what was the point to all this?

If you let Hoffman die in the last film, or maybe even let it be ambiguous, that would've been a perfect ending. You could've even have weaved Dr. Gordon into that one for a twist but honestly...this was drivel.

The only good scenes in this were the opening trap and Chester Bennington's cameo. The rest was the most pointless thing I've seen...There was barely a story. The main game was boring as everyone was insufferable anyway.

Just a poor show.

Orange Is the New Black: 1x03 Lesbian Request Denied

Yaaaas, Sophia. This episode is all about Sophia and I'm so glad her story is being told and right straight in on the third episode. It's so hard to watch, I can't imagine the pain her and her wife must go through.

Piece by piece we're learning more about Piper and Alex which is better for a TV show, to see it unravel, so it keeps us hooked.

These stories and these characters are so rich. I don't think I've seen another show like it.

Humans: 1x04 Episode 4

Just when I thought nothing shocking had happened this episode, Karen only goes and pulls out a condom from her throat full of food and drink. She's a synth! Does this mean she's like the others and can feel consciousness? Was she programmed to behave like a human? Does anyone else know she's a synth.

Something I didn't find so shocking was the husband having sex with the synth. Usually things like this tap into a nerve with me which puts me off of a character completely. But instead, I saw his pain, his shame and his lack of knowing what to do and that was interesting. I hope this isn't just left here.

Leo has found out some way of discovering more about these synths with more to them so we'll definitely find out more in the following episodes but it's fair to say that it'll probably be revealed painstakingly over the rest of the series.

American Ultra

This is why I should write reviews straight after the film...

Anyway, I liked this movie. It was surprisingly clever, witty and fresh. It was also self-aware but not in a absurd Scary Movie way. It wasn't a parody but at the same time, it took a stoner movie and just, i guess, made it good. Characters had personalities but I guess the focus was more on the plot as opposed to character development. There were nice twists and it didn't go down a cliche route with romance but didn't feel uneventful for that.

I'll write a better review on a second watch. I promise.

Supernatural: 1x01 Pilot

I always find it hard to judge pilot episodes as they are structurally different to other episodes. You don't know the characters to have any feeling toward them and there always seems to be a lot going on. Except, I didn't feel overwhelmed with plot in this one. It kinds felt like a short film which I liked.

Super Size Me

I remember watching this in Science in like Year 10 and laughing at the fact that his sex life suffered. But like that's some screwed up stuff. As a lot of people have said, Morgan's experiment is extreme but it's so interesting to see what he goes through. What we have here is an extremely entertaining and shocking documentary. However, although it has many valid points, it shouldn't necessarily be taken as real scientific research.

Supernatural: 1x07 Hook Man

Literally stepping right into a slasher horror. I keep thinking to myself that one day, they're gonna walk into it thinking it's their kind of problem and then it's actually just a crazy axe murderer and Dean just runs.

I was getting a little impatient for things to go full throttle and then my god did it hit me. The moment when I realised his forgetting things was based on his fear of developing Alzheimer's like his dad shook me. And I thought I had worked out the ending but yet it still managed to surprise me.

Orange Is the New Black: 1x09 F*cksgiving

I agree with JeanRausseo. Essentially, he was listening to his dad's advise about not giving Piper something to ruminate over but in fact he's actually pushed her closer to Alex. Healy's homophobic obsession has also had the same effect, causing defiance in Piper's relationship with Alex.
