I've put together this list using both a news post regarding the Alien Universe and a Quora post from Arthur Faust quoting:

What is the correct chronological order of the alien/predator movies?

Seen all the movies and read several of the books.
The answer to that question has always been rather divisive. Whether or not Alien and Predator even existed in the same universe was never actually confirmed by 20th Century Fox; Ridley Scott and James Cameron both seemed to revile the concept, but that was mostly due to just how badly they thought of the two AVP films. With Disney’s acquisition, they seem to be going for the idea that they are as of now officially connected. Except for AVP and AVPR, however. Those just seem to be standalone spin-offs that can be considered canon if you like, but they will most likely never be referenced in other media.
So, that being said, the official chronology is this:

  • Predator (1987) - Set in 1987. This is the earliest chapter in the saga.
  • Predator 2 (1990) - Ten years later, in 1997.
  • Non-canon: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
  • Non-canon: Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) - Both films are set back to back in October of 2004. Again, their canonicity is largely in doubt.
  • The Predator (2018) - This is set in 2018, 21 years after the last Predator was officially sighted on Earth.
  • Predators (2010) - We don’t actually know exactly what year this movie is set, only that it is between The Predator and Prometheus.
  • Optional: Blade Runner (1982)
  • Optional: Soldier (1998)
  • Optional: Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
  • Prometheus (2012) - This film spans the years 2089 to 2094. The opening scenes with Dr. Shaw on Earth are set in 2089, while all of the events on LV-223 span from December of 2093 to the first few days of January of 2094.
  • Alien: Covenant (2017) - This film takes place 10 years after the Prometheus disappears, in 2104.
  • Alien (1979) - The first film in the series happens to be one of the latest in terms of chronology. It’s set in 2122, 18 years after Covenant.
  • Aliens (1986) - The first sequel takes place in 2179, 57 years after Alien.
  • Alien 3 (1992) - The third Alien solo film is believed to be set almost immediately after Aliens, with the year still being 2179.
  • Alien Resurrection (1997) - Canonically the latest film in the saga, Resurrection takes place in 2379. A full two centuries after Alien 3. It seems that the canonicity of this film and Alien 3 are currently under discussion. There is a chance new media may be released in the future that could possibly debunk both films. Until such a thing happens, though, they remain canon.
  • Optional: Firefly (2002 to 2003) and Serenity (2005)

All movies in the Alien universe in chronilogical order.
Also includes the Blade Runner movies/shorts since Ridley Scott confirmed this is also in the same universe.
Apparently Predator is not part of Alien canon, but I'll keep them here anyway.

Chronological order as the story develops, not by the movies' release dates.

In here is a modified order of the chronological order that deals, with the pacing later on, and the change in a certain voice actor.

8

Timeline of all movies and series that are considered Canon.

This includes all Saga Episodes (Ep. I-IX), Series (The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian, Andor, etc.), Web-Series and shorts (Forces of Destiny, Galaxy of Adventures, etc.) and spin-off movies (Rogue One, Solo, etc.)

The correct watch order for Season 2. Trakt has not corrected its listing yet.

When I watch something where the timeline of events are different from the official release order, I make a chronological list. This Trakt list includes the visual media.
