Legends of the Fall

I love this film. It's beautifully shot, scored, and paced, producing a mesmerising effect. There is real love and depth in the story. I would highly recommend and will watch it every few years I'm sure. It's a perfect film for when you want to drawn into an emotional journey.

Trainwreck

A film I could happily rewatch every few years. For me, good comedy is hard to find. I'm easily bored by lots of stuff out there but this held my attention.

American Graffiti

Highly stylised look at crusing culture in its centre Modesto, CA in 1961 where director George Lucas grew up. This film is the original Dazed and Confused. We follow a bunch of teenagers on a fairly plotless but fun night out. Some of them are spending their last night in town before going off to university. The music and visuals are great. Some of the dialogue is ace and the odd couple roadster and pre-teen B plot is fun. I'm not sure If watch again due to the lack of a plot but I enjoyed it once around.

The Dig

Slow-paced yet compelling film about discovery of Sutton Hoo burial. A quiet world one wants to inhabit. I would watch again.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Thian is one of the absolutely best, well-written shows of all time, especially the first season when it's all so new and fresh. Also, there are so few shows which are truly engaging but not heavy drama. We all need light viewing sometimes. Highly recommend to everyone and will watch many times in my life, I'm sure.

Never Have I Ever

This coming-of-age drama is extremely watchable, with a good balance of humour and heart. The casting is great. Will probably appeal more to teens and women than adult men. Only complaint is that Ben Gross is an anti-Semitic portrayal in the first season that doesn't upend the tropes it's playing on but instead reinforces them; this is consciously dialed back in the second season and beyond.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

I'm an adult who enjoys the occasional YA coming of age film or show. I'd recommend this to most teenage girls but for me it fell short. the show shines when it allows it's characters to be at their most natural. The writers should have leaned into this realness, and this tenderness and subtlety more.

Unfortunately, to fill 7 episodes, they gave into teen cliches. The plot is peppered with incidents like a fight breaking out at a party, a main character getting too drunk and spilling secrets, and even a Debutante ball. Eye roll. So overall, the show is okay and I'll probably watch the second season, but it's hardly bingeworthy.

The Lost Daughter

This was worth a watch but I probably wouldn't watch again. The themes explored are important but the film is a bit slow without a strong narrative. It's great to give voice to mothers who resent motherhood though. I might check out the book.

Downton Abbey

King George and Queen Mary visit Downton. Royalists delight and Republicans cringe. This felt.like two mediocre episodes of the later seasons strung together, with very little tension or story upstairs and a stupid storyline downstairs. It's entertaining enough for fans despite the cheesiness. There are certainly some amusing moments. The highlight was the costumes - absolutely stunning. I wish the camera showed them off more. I'm glad I watched once but wouldn't watch again unless for the visuals.

The Pursuit of Love

A delight. Unlike some period pieces, this one is fast-paced with touches of modern humour, framing, and music. Highly recommend and would watch again.

Ready Player One

A fun and unique watch but not good enough to watch again.

Fosse/Verdon

Well worth watching for fans of musical theatre, but others too. Excellent drama about the toxic relationship between 2 of Broadway's greatest legends and the stories behind the curtain of Sweet Charity, Damn Yankees, Cabaret, Chicago etc.. Michelle Williams is superb - what a transformation! I'd even give it a second watch one day.

4 Part Miniseries . Excellent story, themes, music, costumes. important gender and race history explored.. Will watch again.

The Prestige

Great acting, character development, and puzzles to solve. Would like to watch again years from now, knowing how each man's trick worked, and keeping that in mind as I watched.

My husband and I both enjoyed it and listened to the best songs on repeat for weeks. Would watch again.

Totally holds up. Light charming entertainment. I'll happily click it again some day.

Dear Zoe

Disappointing adaptation of the YA nove about a girl who goes to live with her Dad after the death of her 2 year old half-sister Zoe. Sadie Sink is excellent but Kweku Collins falls flat as Jimmy, delivering lines with dead eyes and little intonation. What's more, while she was actually 17 playing 16, he looked like he was 25. The chemistry wasn't there, the connection wasn't built and the love between them wasn't earned. The dialogue was at times terrible. It's a shame. I liked the novel well enough (as an adult who occasionally enjoys YA fiction) and think this could have been a winner with better casting and more time devoted to the live story. Would not recommend.

Fleishman Is in Trouble

Superb commentary on middle age. The last few episodes have much to say and are not light viewing. Highly recommended and will watch again at some point and/or read book.

Poker Face

5.5/10 Rating - I would not recommend. I watched the first two episodes, read the description of the middle episodes, and finished with the last two episodes. I lost interest when I realised each episode was going to be in an entirely new place with a wholly new cast and story, except for our lead who has a preternatural ability which helps her solve a murder in each locale. I didn't feel any real growth in character and the fact that we know who committed each crime makes even the mystery aspect of the show lifeless. It's a shame because Lyonne's character is fun and the first episode was promising - I wish Rian Johnson had chosen to make the show all about the. head underworld.

It feels like the TV show equivalent of a short story collection and just was not for me.

The Wire

Overrated. I can't understand why this is so consistently ranked as one of the best. Perhaps it's because it appeared before and helped launch the Golden Age of Television. Yes, the show pulls together many storylines and themes. But the characters are not truly developed. I sat there in Season 2 and 3 and asked that question about the most important characters and realised we can have only really say a couple sentenced about each. The show is good and I wouldn't steer anyone away from it, but I don't see myself rewatching it either. I never even bothered to finish the last 2 seasons.

The Edge of Seventeen

Very watchable coming of age film. Only complaint is if gets too cringeworthy sometimes. Would watch again.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre

This feels like Guy Ritchie's take on a sort of Bond film. There's nothing unmissable here but it's quite watchable and Hugh Grant is fantastic. I'd happily watch it again down the road.

Stranger Things

I liked season 1 but wasn't motivated to continue after season 2. I wanted more character development and less time on the sci fi of it all.

Daisy Jones & the Six

Good but not great. Beautifully shot and great performances but something is missing. There needed to be more nuance and development of the main relationship and I needed to care more about the band itself or give it less screen time. The pacing is too slow and I just wasn't always motivated to keep watching. Would I watch it again? Meh. I wouldn't mind it as it's pretty, music is okay, and Keough is charming as hell. But also, meh.

Ammonite

A quiet, meditative film that lulls you into its rhythm. A nice mix of history (Mary Anning was real) and fiction (we know nothing of her love life). Not for everyone and nothing unmissable but I really enjoyed it and could see myself viewing it again one day if in the right mood.

Empire Falls

The world and the characters are intriguing and I'd like to read the book once I've forgotten the show enough. The script was lacking at times and had that old old TV feel to it with lots of clumsily interested exposition in the first hour of four. With such a great cast, it feels like it could have been much better. I'd love to see it redone now as an 8 part series with a better script and higher production value. Still, I might watch it again one day.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Overrated. If you love a murder mystery, you'll be entertained. For me, I didn't care enough about any of the characters and didn't feel they or their relationships were developed enough . I wasn't taken by Knives Out either, but at least that had some interesting family dynamics to explore. overall, this one felt like TV movie quality to me.

Hocus Pocus

I recently rewatched this as an adult and was really impressed. I guess I didn't expect more than a Disney TV movie level of quality. This film is joke after joke and the adult leads are abaolute pros who have created fully fleshed out unique characters. Bette Midler is mesmerising. I very much wanted to see what would happen next. I'm sure I'll watch this again one day when in the need of light entertainment.

Impromptu

Rather compelling with an all star cast showing off their comedic chops. I'm glad I have this witty period piece about Chopin and trouser-wearing authoress George Sand a chance and would watch again.
