Really good, wish there was more

Good Time

Great first 20 minutes, the rest was kind of boring.

Creed III

Something felt off about the pacing and the fights looked like they were from a video game.

Margin Call

This movie feels like it goes by an hour. Not a single boring scene, although some of the financial stuff I didn't fully understand.

Raw

I usually like disturbing movies like this .. but this one just didn't do it for me. I did not care for any of the characters and did not find the acting to be particularly good. The plot kept getting more and more ridiculous yet it was very illogical and didn't progress in a natural way. Like when she cut her sister's finger off the sister passed out and she didn't seem to care much. Then the sister seemed to forgive her right away and then stepped in front of a car. Am I missing something here?

Side Effects

Although the first half is pretty slow, once the movie picks up it never loses steam. Rooney Mara and Jude Law are both excellent but the rest of the cast is rather forgettable, particularly Channing Tatum who should not have been cast for this role.

All the twists and turns are really well done although not to the point where the viewer is totally lost.

Emily the Criminal

Nothing really groundbreaking here but a solid fun watch. Also, why make her from Jersey? the accent was terrible.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

An extremely fun and well paced movie with a great ensemble cast. Glass Onion follows a similar format to the first film but it is definitely not a just copy and paste. My favorite part was the first act which hooked me into the movie right away.

Once they reach Miles's house, however, the movie unfolds in a relatively simple manner compared to the first film and the ending is not fully satisfying.

I would have really loved an actual murder mystery, not some fake murder mystery game that was solved immediately. And Miles was implied as Duke's murderer way to early on.

The Menu

This movie suffers from leaning too heavily into comedy when really it would work better as a mystery/thriller. However, the comedy threw off the whole tone of the movie as it was hard to take it seriously and the payoff of the mystery in the end felt really lazy. Anya Taylor-Joy was a bright spot but I could not stand her date Tyler who I thought either gave a really bad performance, or was very poorly written.

Don't Worry Darling

The concept of this movie is very intriguing, it looks great, and I actually thought the twist was pretty solid. However, the character development is very poor -- you end up caring for none of the characters except for Alice (Florence Pugh is great), and Harry Styles is terrible which kind of ruined the movie for me.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

It is really amazing how Kubrik is able to do so much with so little. Although black and white and largely taking place in just a few locations, Kubrick is able to brilliantly craft a story that satirizes the annihilation of humankind. It is quite hilarious the measures that Buck and general Ripper are willing to go to, to stop the spread of communism, even if this means launching an atomic bomb on Russia. Buck's character is particularly funny as he has to pretend the entire time that he is against war.

The standout performance, however, is obviously Peter Sellers who plays three different characters, all unique. I'll be honest, I thought these were three different actors the first time I saw it -- that's how different they look and act. Seller's portrayal of Strangelove turns this movie from great to a near masterpiece. This movie falls short of the perfect 10 for me, though, because the plane scenes are pretty boring and I do not think we got enough of Dr. Strangelove!

Bullet Train

This is genuinely one of the best looking, most stylistic movies I have seen. I love how every character is introduced with a unique backstory and name. The color pallette is also expecional as is the chemistry between the actors, especially Lemon and Tangerine. I also really enjoyed all the cameos. The reason this movie didn't score higher for me was that the plot was not very intriguing. To some people this won't matter as the movie does so many other things well to overcome this, but for me it was hard to keep my attention for the full 2 hours without an interesting plot to invest in.

After Yang

The dance scene in opening credits might be my favorite opening credit scene ever. The rest of the movie is pretty boring, especially Colin Farrell as Jake, even though the concept of an android used to assist in parenting would be cool if done right.

Clue

I am a huge fan of the board game, and so was excited to give this movie a try. I wouldn't say it was bad by any means but it was very uneven in its tone which left me quite underwhelmed. In my opinion it should have leaned much more into the mystery and a lot less on the comedy. Mrs. Peacock was particularly unfunny and annoying but in general all the acting was way to over the top. The only character this worked for me for was Tim Curry's Wadsworth who really held together the movie and kept it from getting boring. I did find the actual ending satisfying and did like how it offered multiple endings just like the game.

I do think a remake of this movie could definitely exceed this one with the right actors.

Malignant

I am not a huge horror movie fan, to be fair, but I was a bit underwhelmed with this movie. [spoiler] Not of the performances were super captivating, the romance between Sydney and Kekoa went nowhere, and Gabriel's origin as to why he was evil was never explained. I did find interesting the whole concept of a parasitic twin which kept me engaged for most of the movie. The prison scene was also badass!

King Richard

I'm not a huge tennis fan but boy was this a compelling movie. Although Venus and Serena would go on to become the big stars in real life, this movie is certainly more about the unique way in which their father chooses to raise them. One thing that people may take issue with is that Richard is portrayed very positively in the film, even though he was extremely controlling and strict on his daughters. I, however, am fine with the film taking some liberties as it shows how much Richard believed in his daughters.

The acting from the young girls, particularly Venus, is very good as is Jon Bernthal as tennis coach Rick Macy. But, as expected, Will Smith steals the show here, mastering the mannerisms and the attitude of Richard in a way that you are rooting for this guy despite his stubbornness and hubris. The final match even made me tear up.

Where the Crawdads Sing

This was a solid movie start to finish. I thought it did a particularly good job with its pacing especially switching seamlessly from the present day courtroom scenes to flashbacks of Kya. Particular shout out to David Strathairn for his portrayal as the defense lawyer as he was able to connect with the audience with little to work with. The rest of the cast was also very strong (including the child actors) although I do feel that the other lawyer was not very convincing in his role. My biggest complaint about this movie is that it implies at the end that Kya murdered Chase, yet given the lack of evidence given in court this seemed almost impossible. How would she have made it to her meeting on time the next day? One small nitpick I had was Tate being horrified when he discovers the necklace. To me, he should have reacted with a smile.

Don't Look Up

Terribly paced. Message is forced and we are beaten over the head with it. Also, the characters are so unrealistic -- I understand that it is a satire and is making the point that our society is focused on the wrong things, but no one would act like this if there were a comet coming for the earth; the global warming metaphor just doesn't really work. Jonah Hill made me laugh a few times but that's about it.

Succession: 3x09 All the Bells Say

This show goes in the right direction every. single. time. I thought there was no way they could keep Kendall alive but that is why Jesse Armstrong is writing this show and not me.

Dead Poets Society

It would have be great to see a scene with Todd and Mr. Keating explaining Keating's affinity for him. Just in general, I would have liked to see Todd have more screen time given that they introduced him as being the main character yet I felt Neil was much more prominent. It is odd because Todd felt kind of unimportant to the entire film except for the obvious effect that Mr. Keating had on him given that he seemed to not have a great relationship with his parents. I will say, though, it was nice how straightforward the story was, making every minute enjoyable to watch.

Succession: 3x07 Too Much Birthday

This show does such a great job of showing the downward spiral of Kendall that I am actually starting to feel bad for him. Probably the best episode since the season 2 finale.

Gone Baby Gone

Phenomenal. The acting was great all around, particularly Ed Harris and Casey Affleck. All the twists are logical and keep the movie interesting and unpredictable. I would have liked to see Patrick and Angie's relationship fleshed out a little bit more and as it would have made for a more emotional ending, but still felt as though the ending was very good. One more thing -- I still don't understand who the bald guy killed in the bathtub.

So much potential but the script was just so poorly written. So bad in fact that it got to the point where I was laughing at how bad every single line was.
