What initially appears to be a retelling of Pixar's Up turns into something very different, quite amusing, and heartwarming to boot.
The film is, of course, another showcase for Tom Hanks to show off his wide range of talents, and he inhabits the role of the eponymous, cantankerous grump very well. But besides him, the entire cast of different and well-written characters put in strong performances all round, particularly Mariana Treviño.
Although the story could have easily settled for being another one about overcoming grief, what makes Otto stand out is its celebration of caring, compassion and kindness to and from strangers.
Psychotic, motiveless killings are something I can tolerate in a horror movie - but not when the victims are this unlikeable and stupid.
Perhaps I'm missing something, as I've never played the video game(s) that this is based on. But for me, the plot was far too ludicrous, the script far too nonsensical and the scares far too predictable. Its only saving grace is the cast, who take their roles more seriously than I can take this film.
Alice Oseman's adorable graphic novel series is brought to colourful life in this, one of the most beautiful and inspiring queer love stories ever told. Its writing is exquisite; its cinematography and style are wonderful; and its ensemble of wonderful character are played by an amazing cast, particularly its captivating leads Kit Connor and Joe Locke.
In spite of its plot being rather silly, The Half of It is worth the watch for its feel-good factor, its compelling performance from Leah Lewis and Daniel Diemer's inventory of hilarious faces.
Though the story is somewhat convoluted, there are some excellent twists and turns, powerful tension and striking performances from the cast, particularly Havana Rose Liu.
