This WILL be the best sci-fi movie of the year decade
Forget about dumb isekai and overpowered anime with convoluted power systems, Frieren is the opposite, a calm slow burn slice of life. It's everything you need from a fantasy adventure.
I'm no fan of the books but damn the pace is all over the place, first episode was mediocre at best and why did they make it just 37 minutes? Give us more background and development before you rush into a fight scene. Second episode was better in terms of pacing but yet it felt so disconnected to me one episode you get chased by a monster and the next you're fighting off bullies. I don't know if this is how it went in the books but I really wish this gets better in the coming episodes.
Edit: okay it does get better actually in terms of pacing and all but the show is catered towards a younger audience so I'm not gonna criticise it much but why tf does everyone has either daddy or mommy issues
The moment Anna Sawai came on screen...I did too
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!
Like I said...this is the best science fiction movie I've ever watched. Watched it a few hours ago and I still can't get my mind off of how beautifully crafted this movie is, it's not your regular science fiction movie, it does not resonate with everyone. But Dune part 2 has just reinvented the science fiction genre to a place where you never would've thought. Denis Villeneuve is the best working director in the industry right now. His mastery in worldbuilding is simply a cinematic spectacle, Dune 2 surpasses its predecessor in every way imaginable delivering a deep dive into one of the most beloved stories in fiction ever.
It cannot be stated enough, but this movie is one of the most visually stunning movies I've seen in my lifetime, although it's not as stunning as Blade Runner 2049, it's a close second. The breathtaking cinematography coupled with Hans Zimmer's score captures the grandeur of the world and immerses the viewer into the beautiful world Dune is.
Yet another stacked cast with Timothée Chalamet being the lead, delivers a captivating performance from start to end. The supporting cast including Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson and Austin Buttler is nothing short of a memorable performance.
Dune isn't without it's fair share of nitpicks, I loved all the characters but the female characters in particular felt under-written or under-developed, which seems to be a recurring issue with Denis lately, most the female characters were used for 'Sex Apeal' and lacked depth in exception to Rebecca's character, who was fleshed out really well in both movies. I loved Zendaya's portrayal of Chani, but I wasn't sold on the romance one bit, at times it felt too forced and their chemistry wasn't convincing, once again this isn't an issue in their acting but rather the chemistry was a bit off. I love Hans Zimmer but his score here is probably the most forgettable yet, there is one track that stood out to me but all the others felt like recycled tracks off his other movies.
This is now officially my 3rd favourite movie of all time.
Godzilla x Kong more like Kong ft. Godzilla. Bro didn't have any screentime in his own movie.
Anyways this doesn't even feel like you're watching the latest monsterverse movie but more like the same old movie you've seen a morbillion times. There's literally no story or plot and the added exposition does nothing to the already hollow plot. Don't get me wrong the action was fantastic, the CGI was great but as always there's so much of it. Bernie was funny as heck and I loved his performance and also that pewdiepie looking guy was fine too I guess.
Initially I wanted to give this a light 6 but there's just so much criticism. I hate that little girl she adds nothing until she's forced to, the whole movie she was like an NPC with two default emotes ☹. Scarking is probably the most underwhelming villain yet, my guy is built like damn stick, not threatening at all, also he could've been introduced way earlier in the movie. I love the action but there's just so much of it at the end, basically a CGI-fest, my head started to hurt after a while probably because I watched it in 3d. The main thing that brings the movie down is again the human characters, silly and boring dialogue and over the top humor from Trapper, like Bernie was funny but Trapper didn't really do it for me. I love Kong and his story arc was really great with mini-kong but come on we all love Godzilla more, he is just too OP. I think we all know they'll never add a story ever in a monster-verse movie but eh it is what it is I guess.
Guess I won't be beating the "bro doesn't know how to have fun" allegations.
-1 point for naming it Godzilla x Kong and not have a kiss scene at the end
4th entry of the Kung Fu Panda franchise which in many aspects seems to be a cash-grab project. Without a doubt there is some astounding animation in this movie, coupled with some memorable voice acting performances and some really good jokes that make you laugh out loud.
But all that doesn't save this movie, what made the first kung fu panda movie good they have diluted everything in this...the furious five, the writing, the villain and the side characters all look and feel heartless. The jokes do land at times but I cant shake the feeling that this was made for the money bag. It has the same conventional, predictable, boring silly story. Kid's will definitely enjoy this one but as someone who grew up with these movies, they lost their charm years ago.
Overall this series is getting progressively bad with each entry...
Just saw the trailer and I had no idea Jesse Plemons is in it, I jumped out of the seat when he appeared. It's crazy how criminally underrated Jesse Plemons is as an actor, every time this man is on screen I get chills.
This is the first time I've seen a show kill it's own hype purposefully...like we were supposed to get 8 episodes in the span of 8 weeks but they ruined it and I don't even feel like watching the rest of the season. It's sad because I loved season 1 and season 2 was okay despite the mediocre cardboard cutout looking ass animation
Alright that Mei Mei scene should've been atleast 10 seconds more longer.. just saying
Forget about mind-blowing twists and life changing themes. 'The Family Plan' is all about unadulterated fun where you grab a bucket of pop corn kick your legs up and prepare to be blown away by the action sequences and the over the top family drama with a dash of humour.
If Mission: Impossible and Spy Kids were one movie.. this is it. The plot is not a game changing, industry revolutionizing piece of art but it's one of which takes you on a rollercoaster ride. The cast, led by Mark Wahlberg was great, sure the family tropes were cringey and it wasn't one of the best performances of the year. Although filled with cliches the action sequences keeps you invested and grinning throughout the runtime.
This just instantly became my one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, I love Guy Ritchie's messy style and Henry Cavil looks so damn good in this
"You have laws for these things until they fail, then you have me"
Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. This movie's plot is about as thin as Jason Statham's hair. Speaking of Statham holy shit he has got to bee one of the best modern action stars ever. Statham is no Shakespearian actor but when you see action and Statham together you know it's gonna be good. From the get-go you can see this movie was heavily inspired by John Wick and it's not a bad thing at all.
By means the movie has one of the most mediocre plot and story ever, nothing too big and unoriginal but the direction was good in this, the action choreography and the sound design holy shit the sound design was god tier. I loved every second of it, I am glad they didn't crack many jokes because even the few ones in the movie didn't land at all.
Overall one of the better executed modern action movies but falls short in terms of script, it all depends on how you expect it to be.
"Fuck bruh!"
Oh god.. where do I even start.
The Good:
The Premise was one of the biggest strengths of the movie, aligns perfectly with the thought provoking narrative. The film captures fear and confusion as the world is crumbling around them, from the get-go the viewer is suppose to keep guessing what's happening and leaving us doubting the very meaning of existence. Director Sam Esmail does an excellent job at keeping the viewer engaged throughout the movie despite the inconsistent pacing in the later parts. The performances by all the adults are masterful.Unlike the cookie-cutter disaster movie you get most of the time, this time you are not puzzled with clear cut answers but rather invites the viewer to question the nature of the crisis befalling.
The Bad
I thought I was the only one who felt the cinematography and the camerawork was overdone but some reviews I read the same thing, the constant use of slow motion and the subtle movement of the camera while transitioning smoothly to different cuts, although unique, it's overdone and looses its magic too soon. I had the same problem with the soundtrack sometimes the film tries to overexaggerate suspense and abruptly ends.
Recommendation
If you enjoy slow-burning, thought provoking philosophical thrillers, "Leave the World Behind" is a must watch, if you are not a fan of open-ended conclusions and prefer action packed disaster movies, this is clearly not for you.
THE ANIMATION OH MY GOD
so relatable, i have mad anxiety and has been the major cause of me stressing over my studies and stuff so it's really nice to see my favourite fictional character going through the same thing as me
Kid's movie or not, modern writers should really turn off autopilot on their scripts and spread their wings more.
The only strength of the movie is its willingness to go to extreme extents of showing us some dark and disturbing gore. The plot however is so underdeveloped and the characters are not interesting at all.
Checking out When Evil Lurks is recommended if you enjoy dark, suspenseful, and extreme horror films. That being said, you might want to seek elsewhere if you're searching for a horror movie with a well-developed story and cast of characters.
Great first episode hopefully they keep this up in the coming episodes, we dont want another half baked Disney+ marvel show
Spoke to soon, this shit is ass
Absurdly and laughably bad times and enjoyably fun at times. It's dumb as hell, and even the crew knows it but there seems to be no effort to make it at least mildly tolerable. Jake Gyllenhaal looks like he doesn't even wanna be there half the time and this is definitely not his type of movie. While McGregor looks like he had the most fun in set, his performance is nothing short of terrible, with puns that don't even land and outrageous line delivery.
Aquaflop: Deep Dive into Dissapointment
Another disappointing movie from the superhero genre. Who would've guessed right? Like most superhero movies I went in with shallow expectations. Aquaman 2 is filled with CGI soaked fighting sequences, terribly done dialogue and some pun-derwater jokes (I am proud of that pun). The only good thing about the movie that got going on is Patrick Wilson's acting and Jason Momoa's charm. But not even that is enough to save this shipwreck of a movie.
Overall I would rather recommend you to skip this watery mess.
How are they still making movies like this in 2023..and there is a part 2 coming in 2024. I am actually concerned for the future of cinema as an art form. Movies like Rebel Moon or even The Creator we got early on this year both consist of visually stunning and breath-taking cinematography. However when it comes down to the script it seems like it was generated using Chat GPT. Where is the creativity in this? I missed when we used to get movies that are actually original, nowadays we only seem to get movies that have been done before with no originality.
Review Rant (because I have nothing good to say about this movie)
Yeah the visuals are great...its fine to be honest, didn't baffle me at all. Cool spaceships, laser beam guns streaking across the dark and things exploding, whatever. Then when you look past behind all this you see recycled plot lines and lazy writing generated by ChatGPT. Take Star Wars, throw in a table spoon of Dune. Oppressed colony fighting bad king? Check. Chosen one destined for greatness? Check. It's all been done, seen and shat on before.
Don't even get me started on the characters. We got the generic "tough women warrior queen with a mysterious backstory" accompanied by a weak male. I was really excited to see Charlie Hunnam in this but god damn it he tried, the character was just boring and we all saw the betrayal coming from a mile away.
The story itself takes light years to get anywhere, first half feels so dragging and when they finally starts to pick up on the action it just ends up being soulless cluttered and just flashes and bangs, it ultimately leads up to a "final battle" where your 2 character fight to death. of course instead of making sure your opponent is dead you just throw him off somewhere and go about your day, I think we've all established where that goes. YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE HE IS DEAD.
If you seek movies with interesting plot, originality and well written characters, you won't find anything of sorts in this movie. Do yourself a favor and watch Dune.
What are these atrocious titles dawg :skull:
gotta say...that episode was Totally Ninja Kamui
3/10 (+1 for Hailee cameo)
Look, I wouldn't waste your time yapping how bad The Marvels is – the internet's got that covered. Let's just say Nick Fury could've seen the plot twist with one eye closed, blindfolded, and asleep.
To begin with,I went in expecting a lukewarm 5/10 with some good fighting scenes, but even that was too optimistic of me. Captain Marvel was also a mediocre movie for me, too bland and generic with little to no plot. The general formula for a sequel is to take everything in the prequel and make it a thousand times better. Same weak formula, tripled down on everything that made the first one meh. Poorly written female character? Triple it. Forgettable villains? Check. Corny and forced jokes? Check. Recycled plot lines? Recycle it again.
Overall its a cosmic snooze-fest.
Better be the most satisfying episode of the season, cant wait for Mahito's ass whopping
Started off really interesting.. the first chapter of the movie gave me a promising premise and I was ready to have a thrilling time, but after the first chapter the plot was getting uninteresting, the side characters were not interesting at all and it was boring as hell. Kinda expected a more thrilling action movie. Fincher did his thing, the dark gritty atmosphere was cool and the very few fighting scenes were well choreographed. By the end of the movie all I was thinking was "should this movie had been made". Its just plain boring and uninteresting. Michael Fassbender was great and Tilda Swinton was also good for the little amount of time she had.
Pros:
Fassbender's acting
Cinematography and the locations
Atmosphere
Cons:
Boring and uninteresting
Underdeveloped and a rushed ending
Uninteresting supporting characters
6/10
Peak animation, peak sound track, peak art direction. We are so back!
Alright, there it is...the "best" new anime of the season. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect from this but it would've been great if this came out a few years ago. With the release and the popularity of action shonen anime rising by the minute, it's too easy to call out these types of anime to be filled with cliche tropes so I'm gonna be slightly critical here.
Firstly, I'm really happy with the production decision they made here. Real ballsy of them to develop characters because they know there is nothing much to be discussed story-wise. I have a couple of criticisms here which I don't wanna go deeply into considering this is just the first season. But since we're here...I do not like the 'internal monologuing' here at all. It's probably a personal thing but it kinda gets annoying I feel like I'll get used to it in the coming episodes. Adding to that point there's a lot of exposition happening here in terms of the power system. At the same time, I feel like there are no other ways to go around it so I can excuse it.
Having said that, negativity aside there's a lot to like here, the later half of the show has some incredible fighting action sequences, the choreography is excellent and the powerups pack a punch. I love the character design, the voice acting is incredible and I love how they decided to expand more into characters without making it seem too rushed or too fast. The power system which is probably the biggest strength of the show is one of the best I've seen in the genre, although it follows the same weakest-to-strongest trope they add their twist to it with the power system. They also throw in a bit of fan service which I won't complain about as long as we get more of Cha Hae In.
In conclusion there's a ton of room for improvement here, I could see this being the magnum opus of new gen anime.
What the fuck even happened here :sob:
Without a doubt a technical masterpiece, the sound design rivalling movies like Oppenheimer even, the camera angles, cinematography and the colors all compliment the premise of the movie beautifully.
But here's the thing: as stunning as it looks and as horrifying as it sounds. There is absolutely no direction in terms of plot or character arcs. It's like wandering off in a beautiful landscape without any sense of direction or a map. The acting is solid and it does a good job at exploring the cruelty of war, but without any narrative development. It feels like a repetitive slob making me nod off more than twice.
