Considering the high ratings of some reviewers - I persisted.
But a messy plot (albeit with strong sub-stories) combined with the trendy ending that doesn't answer any questions means I won't be investing more time in this series. Disappointing.

@jl0017 The English is Portuguese on the show. It's not rocket science, it's just so we don't have to watch 10 episodes of subtitles with actors from Portugal.
Decent show but should we assume they live in a world without vampire movies and stories? You see that thing and think Angel?!
loading replies
@magenof Yes. Much like how no one in The Walking Dead ever says the word "zombie", these people have never heard of vampires. To be fair, it started with a senile old man who didn't know who he was or where he was, who suddenly found himself restored to youth and sound mind... it's not surprising that he saw that as a gift, and then wanted to make it fit with the beliefs he'd held his whole life.
what an awful movie
90% of the film is him walking and dealing with useless and meaningless shit
it's like if you buy a game and only do side quests (not the fun ones!)
speaking of games, this film is the equivalent of Death Stranding, just walking and no action
I only gave it 3/10 because I liked the visuals other than that this movie lacks in everything
awful story, no character development and most importantly no clear vision
they just wanted to do a film and seem smart about ithuge fail

@jl0017 Convince an American production company to finance a 10 episode series with all foreign actors and no Americans, based on a book written in English based on an English pilot. I'll wait. Every time a production comes out that uses some English so that it can be produced, people come out of the woodwork to whine. This is such an old, whiny argument. Just enjoy it.
Ahhhhhh i’m so happy they are not shying away from the tough conversations on what it means to be Captain America in this decade. I love symbolism in storytelling and there’s no stronger symbol than that shield, and the way they have used it as a vehicle and representative of the different American identities (good and (really) bad) has been incredible.
Steve Rogers, John Walker, Sam Wilson and Isaiah Bradley all represent sides of the US that co-exist, and John Walker being the effective Captain America for most of this show isn’t accidental - he’s the side of America that’s most present and salient right now (in the world off the screen), but ending the show with Sam Wilson carrying that shield - and going through all the issues that that might bring up - is as powerful a message as any - one of hope and of what the US should aspire to be. Steve Rogers is no longer enough, Steve Rogers is the American Dream - Isaiah Bradley the American Reality - and Sam Wilson is both. This show, and all of Captain America’s storyline, is about so much more than just men in spandex and they’ve done a fantastic job taking it even further here. Glad Marvel is still delivering after so many years, makes me proud to be a fan!

Feels like a star wars fan fiction written by a middle schooler during lunch break. Totally unoriginal and uninspiring. Everything from dialogue to the characters and plot is mind jarringly cliched and predictable. With that being said, I don't watch much space movies if any. so I'd be lying if I said I didn't mildly enjoy it. And also credit to where credit is due. the visuals are outstanding. If a movie that looks like this costs 88 millions a pop, my kuddos to the production team. They certainly know how to handle their budget.
And to finally to sum it up, some people will say it's absolute garbage some will defend it with their lives. But the truth is... it's just... very average.

@antiwoke Well the story by Snyder is probably why it was rejected lol. His movies are probably better with the volume down all the way.

VIP4I have just seen the first episode, and that is enough. This was awful. The acting, the story, the scenery. It also feels nothing like the games in it's "atmosphere", even with all its forced references.
But probably worst of all: it was boring.
One of the worst pilots I've ever seen. Steer clear of this one if you have any standard, even if you don't care about the games.

Your standards must be stupid high. First episode was great. The entire show was great and deeply respected the vibe of Fallout.
This is a fascinating watch, it’s such a great insight into filmmaking.
I’d advise anyone to watch this and the theatrical cut back to back, you’ll learn so much about the process, rearranging scenes, editing, etc.Pros:
- Compared to BvS: the script is much more structured, coherent, and simple. Also, this film doesn’t try to have any political depth or social commentary, which is a plus because that requires a filmmaker with subtlety, and Snyder is no such filmmaker. Finally, it doesn’t make any major mistakes like the Martha scene or Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.
- Compared to the theatrical cut: it does a much better job at fleshing out the characters. This particularly helps for Cyborg and Steppenwolf. It kinda turns Cyborg into the coolest character of the DCEU. Also, the editing of the action scenes is much better.
- I love that it has a big, epic tone. The storytelling feels like it takes a lot of inspiration from Lord of the Rings.
- Some great character moments, particularly with Alfred (I also liked Flash running back in time, the killing of Steppenwolf and Aquaman’s scene with Vulko ). There are actually quite a few laughs in this, more so than you’d expect from a Snyder film.
- The score is good (ignoring the overplayed WW theme).Cons:
- It looks kinda hideous. There is an artificial and fake feeling to most of the scenes. The way it’s directed and shot can only be described as cheap and a visual overkill.
- Casting. Some of the main actors aren’t competent enough to star in a film like this. As long as they keep Momoa, Gadot and Miller, these films will always feel like discount Avengers films.
- It kinda drags, there are some scenes that could’ve been cut or shortened in order to improve the pacing. This is one of the things the theatrical cut does way better, even if it’s much more bland as a cut.
- The Flash still runs and acts like a moron. It particularly stands out in this cut because his Looney Tunes-esque antics are cringeworthy and don’t fit here, and his character still feels very barebones.
- Like BvS, the setting up of future films feels very clunky and forced.
- Though nowhere near as bad as in BvS, I once again noticed some painfully overwritten and forced dialogue. In short:
Is it better than the theatrical cut, or BvS? Yes.
Is it a good movie? Not by any metric.3.5/10

Didn’t this entire show start with Sam throwing terrorists out of planes left and right?
The writing in this show is just laughable.
Everything happens because the writers want it to happen.

@jordyep They weren't "upset" about him killing that kid lol. They even said "we get it" or something along the way. Sam and Bucky wanted the shield back and nothing more. John Walker got repercussions because he's an active member of the US military that got recorded killing a kid in cold blood in a foreign country that happens to be in Europe. Sam was a paid mercenary killing other mercenaries over the skies bordering two war-torn Middle East countries. If you think those are the same scenarios then i'm sorry for you.
Honestly this episode could have been condensed into 5 or 10 minutes. Too much talking and just in general nothing really going on until the end, and then we get a predictable plot twist. I mean just a bad season finale. It just sprinkles enough at the end to keep you interested for the second season. Unless season two is better, this show ain’t worth it at all. But on the other hand I’m tired of waiting for the second season every damn time. It used to be that the pilot is supposed to hook you. And don’t get me started how much of a scam 6 episodes in one season is.
Overall this episode was just meh, which doesn’t make it look very good since it’s the season finale.loading replies
@wingedmando Agreed. While the revelation was interesting in hindsight, the execution felt like the Architect scene from The Matrix Revolution -- drawn out and overindulgent, compounded by all too hammy He Who Remains.
Season 1 was tolerable, but season 2 is boring and mind-numbing. Got to the first 15 minutes of episode 3 and couldn't take it anymore. Goodbye.
This show started with promise - the Russians getting to the moon before the Americans, but they're now changing history. Reagan president in 1976?! Margret Thatcher also PM in 76?! Emails and colour monitors in the late 70's. Please.

I don’t get the negativity. Honestly you people are so entitled. The lack of context is intentional and there are several clues as to why it’s that way. It’s not a 50s to show (we haven’t seen them imitate a 60s tv show yet, that’s next week). It’s going to change probably every week, even up to the point of imitating modern tv shows like the office from what they’ve said. And the context is clear enough by the end of the second episode. Even without reading additional articles to explain the more subtle hints, you can tell what’s going on at least loosely. Plus it does a great job lampooning the absurdity of 50s tv and ideals about homemaking and marriage. To hilarious effect

@cbucher1 The problem is not with the lack of context. It's just that the rest of the show is boring. I see what they are going for but the show is just not fun to watch. Maybe it's because I've never watched old American TV so I don't have the nostalgia factor but I feel like there is no stakes or anything interesting going on beyond the "something strange is going on" elements (which are rare).

Drama to action ratio is high. Even in the rare occasions there is some action, it's not impressive. Lies, manipulation, and pornographic violence, needless to say, with the instillation typical Hollywood-driven western criticism of Japanese culture due to its nonconformity with western misandry. Intriguing at first but the overdramatic acting, application of western morality or lack thereof on eastern culture, and lack of creativity turn it into a tedious watch. If you enjoy drama, feeling better about yourself because you're not in the east, and the usual backstabbing plot, you might enjoy. Otherwise, a sleeping aid.
Edit:
after watching additional episodes, had to reduce the rating from a 6 to a 5. So much overdrama in every single scene. So boring. How can you be a man and watch this thing!? That Mariko and her pretentious whiny voice. Ugh. I hope that she doesn't miraculously survive the door bombing even though I don't intend to watch this series anyway.
loading replies
Drama to action ratio is just the same as Game of Thrones S01. Battles are so much greater after an appropriate period of story building. So I would have some patience and watch the season fully before determining it's al drama and no suspense.
Also, where do you see Western superior morale in this production? There's a single Western role and you can see the clash between two cultures there at times, which is fairly realistic, no? He's constantly called a barbarian and so all his ways and morales. I really don't see where Western morales are supposedly depicted as superior.

I'm pre-emptively giving this a meh cause I'm sure this show is not gonna surprise me. Halfway through we have one filler episode and one of the most uninteresting reveals possible and cliches so expected and boring that I feel I know exactly how this will end
I dunno why I expect anything interesting from these shows. I keep hoping that we'd get Legion again cause Disney owns Fox and Legion was an X-Men property. I don't mean we'd get a reboot or whatever of Legion, just that they'd take the interesting ideas from Legion and make something interesting and zany and truly whacky and avante-garde. Instead, WandaVision was uninteresting and terrible and this takes a genuinely interesting character and flanderizes the shit out of him
I should probably give up on the MCU shows and just watch the movies. At least they're short
Edit: watched the last episode. Yeah I'm not changing my rating. The pacing was awful. The finale was messy and the cliffhanger ending was unearned. The fights were heavily edited poorly choreographed chaos

@jl0017 I think you all are also missing the fact of actor urgency. If it were actually in Portuguese, they would need to find various actors who can speak a degree of both Japanese and Portuguese, especially for the more demanding characters that are meant to sound fluent in both (Mariko, for example) it'd increase the standards needlessly high during casting. When really, English is a big part of Japan, so asking that in the case of speaking English is much less demanding. Not just casting, but in terms of overall production member qualifications (like assistant writers for example), those who qualify for both Eng/Jap are much more common.
Seriously, it's not just a creative decision, but a very large decision that people seem entitled and spoiled for thinking they deserve.

@jordyep I agree with the whole sentiment, how ever I must point out that Momoa and Miller are only terrible because their part is terrible in itself. Miller have played a great part in the movie We need to talk about Kevin. He wasn't the MC, it was his mom played by Tilda Swinton but it was a good part nonetheless. Even though I believe this, I grant that Miller hasn't really put in the effort to make part in good movies.
Then, Momoa really do need to step up his game. However, I still believe he could do it with a better script and a better director.
I cannot even get in talking about Gadot since I really like Wonder Woman 1, but hated the second. She also lacks parts in good to great movies as she basically just started her Stardom (I mean, really started). I don't know if her accent gets in the way, but I hope she isn't just another pretty face (similar with Miller).

All the people watching this and commenting here have attached themselves to the idea of Mr & Mrs Smith from 2005 with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie when this IP is far older than that and has historically never been as action packed as the 2005 one. This is a similar take on spies and love when forced to be with one another but is far more similar to Donald Glover's other project Atlanta. There's shades of magical realism, bold faced satire into modern life and a lot of dry humour but dialed back on the "magical" a fair bit. The show is not meant to show these hyper-competent super assassins, it's a look into two people navigating a torrid relationship filled with ups and downs. The spying is background noise and mostly pure setup considering how ridiculous it is and how clearly incompetent everyone involved in the org is despite all the cloak and dagger. It's also hilarious.
People truly are missing the point by asking for "more action" and one idiot calling it "woke" and other nonsense. It's not for everyone but I'd say give it a chance, especially when it's just 8 fairly short episodes.

@cbucher1 They should've stolen/based it on good stuff from Seinfeld/Friends/Simpsons. Instead it feels like if someone took the most boring jokes from "Married with Children". Though IMO they hint that it's not supposed to be actually funny. So ~60 min of bad jokes and a couple seconds of reveals.
(Then again MwC hasn't aged well, or it just never was my kind of humour, and I don't rewatch it.)
