They should have just cancelled the show, or at most had 1 season of Alan living it up maybe with Herb getting divorced from Judith after finding out the baby wasn't his.
She somehow still gets insane alimony from Herb which makes him broke (even though he's a real doctor) and thus moves in with Alan at the beach house.

What a happy coincident for me that Charlie Sheen (who I cannot stand!) was kicked from the show in the same year that I discovered that Chuck Lorre is a great producer (The Big Bang Theory). Because otherwise I would have missed this show and let me tell you, without Charlie this show is really, really funny!
