The Newsroom 2012

Absolutely loved this show and it is so sad to see it wrap up after only 3 Seasons. I am, however, glad that the episodes were lengthy and full of content (not just "filler") through the length of the series.

Unfortunately I am not one to follow current events as much as I should, however this gave me insight and a fresh perspective on what is (was) "going on" in the world.

Daniels had brilliant performances and I loved the complexity he brought to Will. Would love to see him in another strong role very soon.

Nice work Sorkin. Awesome work.

This is one of the most consistently impressive shows I've had the privilege and absolute joy to watch. It carries a similar tone and feel as The West Wing, also written and created by Aaron Sorkin, which makes it no surprise why I loved this show so much. The writing is spectacular and the acting is phenomenal. This is one of those rare shows where every character grows and develops and has a moment to shine. I'm sad that the show only lasted 3 seasons, but those 25 episodes are pure gold.

87%?! This is one of the best shows that has ever been made, and it only has 87% on here?! What the hell!!! Aaron Sorkin is incredible, and this is his best work in my opinion. Being a huge huge fan of West Wing, I had no idea I would love this a million times more than that. This is so raw & real, so right & true, so deep & so interesting. The writing is absolutely superb. The fact this is only to have 3 seasons is a god damn CRIME and I don't understand for the life of me why the hell anyone would allow that to happen. I guess this is what we have to expect when the masses have become mindless idiots who enjoy crap like True Blood & Kardashians, or How I Met Your Mother....

Terrific show. Relevant even today. Perhaps even more so. The ending was a tad anticlimactic but I am at least glad they ended it while it was still good. One of the greatest shows of all time.

I hadn´t even got to the opening credits of the first episode and I was already hooked. This show is amazing in every aspect. Brilliantly written and performed by an amazing group of actors who, from top to bottom, brought their A-game in each and every episode. The acting is at times so intense that I was literally on the edge of my seat. Dialogues and the sense of humor are great. The quality of the production is on the same level, or better, with big screen movies.

I am not American or live there but the message of "The Newsroom" concerning the news and the presentation of it does work everywhere else, too. Am I dissapointed they only made 25 episodes ? Well, yes and no. Because I´d rather have 25 hours of 100% the best they could do than having 100 hours of a show where 25 % of it was the best they could do.

Why is America the greatest country in the world? It's not. That speech in the pilot was fucking amazing. Jeff Daniels is amazing.

loading replies

Is this like "Studio 60 on the Sunset Trip"?

EDIT: Ok, I've seen it has the same writer so I'm gonna enjoy this.
EDIT2: And I did.

loading replies

This will be perhaps the best TV series I've ever seen. Too bad it's over.

loading replies

My number one drama series!

loading replies

One of the best shows ever. Amazing dialogs and, as always with Aaron Sorkin, the main characters are "too good to really exist", but they rock. Viva Don Quijote!

loading replies

At first I had a little trouble with the series, but after episode 4/5 the series became really good. Jeff Daniels plays the anchorman like this, so he would be one himself. The story was implemented excellently.

loading replies

The show should be mandatory to every “news reporter” wannabe. That’s news, they can’t use it unless held by an equivalent deontological code. Until them, it would be a blatantly lie to themselves.

loading replies

Aaron Sorkin is a genius. First Sports Night, then West Wing, and now this. No one does TV better.

loading replies

Originally gave it a 9, but bumped it to a 10 after season 2 as it left the first season for dead. They cut down a bit on the romantic side of things and increased the general level of awesome.

loading replies

Really good show. Both the actors, the situations, the dialogues are great. The idea to place the show 2 years in the past really allows to give enough distance about events to get the facts right but it's close enough to remember the situation.

After 2-3 episodes to create the setting, some tensions start to appear. The hard part comes now, will they manage to do really good drama about that. They set the bar pretty high, they have to deliver a great performance or people will be disapointed.

Let's hope they continue the good job, I think that HBO signing a second season probably means they have good intel about the future. :-)

loading replies

It's very good and I graded it 10/10 when I watched the 2nd episode. I've watched it all and I don't regret it!

3rd and FINAL season just started production...
WHY FINAL?!?! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo~

loading replies

haha Sorkin read Manufacturing Consent and thought "what if that was a girlfriend/boyfriend thing".

loading replies

S01 was pretty amazing the way they fit the story around events that had taken place. Only negative would be a bit too much on the relationships.
S02 moved away from current events and focused a bit too much on the overall story line.
S03 wraps it up in a pretty little bow for all the characters except for one.
The cast is excellent throughout all seasons. Don and Sloan have great interactions and provide excellent secondary story lines.

loading replies

We lasted until the end of the second episode. There is talk, a lot of talk, and there's talk. Oh they talk as well. 85% votes, so I'm clearly not one of a talker.

loading replies

Too glib, too preachy, too much American exceptionalism. Could not finish.

loading replies

Pretty good season from a man who had no interest in making it...

loading replies

Как он странно закончили 3 сезон.

loading replies

Long story short, it's not Sorkins best work, but it's also not his worst. It's a bit of a quality roller coaster because sometimes a very good episode can be followed by a pretty bad one, but once the relationship stuff gets toned down a bit, it's a good watch when you can deal with Sorkins writing and its flaws.

loading replies

Yaaaaaaay! glad for a new season of this show. It's amazing really is and Jeff Daniels intro on the first episode was brilliantly said. Can't wait to get stuck into season 3.

loading replies

Awesome show. So smart and fast. I was hooked from the beginning and out of all of HBOs dramas I've watched (The Wire, Deadwood, GoT, True Detective etc.) this show had me wanting to binge faster than any other.

loading replies

Third and final season????? What! and it's only getting 6 episodes???? HBO, just because it doesn't have boobs and head crushing doesn't mean it's not awesome.

loading replies

Civilize me! Aaron Sorkin doing his magic again.

I never believe that a show could cover so many story lines in only one episode, and do it right!!! I just wish the season was a little more long, 9 episodes per season is be too cruel.

I love this show, the dynamic between actors is great and like a producer myself is fantastic to find a show that is true to the reality.
I like the back and forward of this second season, but I hate that none of the romantic story lines from the first season get to become a real relationship! Ok, so far favorite episode from this season was News night with will ..., I get to see Mac doing her job in the all aspects that require to be a AP, I just love her!!!

I kind of like the show, although the dialogs are often very strange and not really realistic realism really isn't everything, what they cover about the news may be a bit to much US tea party bashing I must admit. Populist in general have some very stupid statements so at some point enough is enough how stupid they may be. Other than that its a great show. I am from the Netherlands and while we have totally different parties and such we also have those damn populists assholes Wilders as the most prominent example.

loading replies

OMG the finale was amazing! ;o

Brilliant acting, amazing drama, inspiring, visually excellent, etc. Can't wait for season 2 :) (already confirmed a long time ago)

The painful thing is that most stuff they show on 'the news' is actually true. I can imagine Tea Party people not liking this show though. I also wonder if Aaron Sorkin has received any death threats or not ;o

I really love this show. Clever dialogues, loveable characters and a nice bridge to the "real world". Hope it stays on for a while.

It keeps on falling apart episode after episode. If they don't change something it won't last more than two season.

Genial!!!!! Genial!!! I love this show!!!!

This show is standard Sorkin, and as such is another great show. As always it's amusing seeing the standard criticisms of Sorkin, but it's especially interesting to see this after his recent film work. If you think this show is over-written, I'd suggest revisiting The Social Network, and to a lesser extent Moneyball. It really makes me wonder if people actually know why they like the things they do, instead of liking them because everyone else does.

Great show.. Never mind the haters that obviously don't like some of the political commentary.

Every week, the show (set in 2010) clumsily incorporates some real life news into the episode, and they always seem to get the tough calls right because they can benefit from the gift of hindsight. It's a neat gimmick, but on the screen it's handled so poorly as to be a distraction.

loading replies

Wow, what a disappointment. HBO and Sorkin, it should be out of the park. In reality, there is no one likable or interesting. I'm watching Sports Night at the same time, and it is so much better. They could have just taken all the scripts from that show, made them about news, and it would have just worked. This is awful.

loading replies

Sorkin has choked almost any relatable or enjoyable character out of the series at this point by pigeonholing all the characters.

let's see, unnecessary relationship tension & love triangles, filibuster moments, hypermoralism and overt, unwanted speeches, and some of the most onerous speechifying, from perhaps the worst kind of characters, the mary-sue writer's version of a real person, with all the flaws airbrushed out, conversation cut down to phrases and adjectives, etc.

... Boston Legal had fun with this, but i don't think they have the characters for this, ranting really relies on a charismatic, self-aware person to convey a believable morality, the characters that need to be relative and flawed, are only shallow

Will is a charismatic idiot, an empty shell with zero foresight, a drama magnet, alternating between artificially deep and offensively shallow, an obvious mary-sue character that has no actual life.

This might just be the episode i saw, but there's no depth beyond his opinions or shame/guilt/guile on show, it makes his character deeply unlikeable once he starts to talk with aaron sorkin's words.

The show is just going to revolve around his regular inevitable colossal mistakes as he puts his foot in it + content of the week + akward social lives of the staff between content of the week.

So it's west wing + studio 60 + sports night. Instead of the scifi monster of the week, it's moral drama using current/pretend events, the "human monster" without the satire of CSI or boston legal.

Portraying TV news as moral observers, guardians of truth, can only be a trainwreck.

The West Wing can pull it off, as people want to believe the whitehouse is full of better people, who are at the apex of civilisation and power, and are better, wiser, more moral people, etc.

Maybe it'll last long enough make an excellent drinking game for west wing/law show fans.

Brilliant in the same way in which The West Wing was the President you wish you had, and this is the News team you wish existed. Romantic wishful thinking, but of the best sort. Very Sorkin - exactly what you'd expect.

Anyone loving The Newsroom has to check out Sorkin's 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip'. I can never stop praising that show, it won't let me. Imagine this kind of premise but behind a Saturday Night Live type of show. Critically acclaimed but it didn't find a large enough audience at the time (too smart for its own good) to be renewed for a second series which is an absolute travesty.

I know dunpealhunter and sean (56 plays. Nice.) will agree, Sorkin has the Midas touch and Studio 60 is 22 carat.

This has been a public service announcement :)

I heard that The Newsroom has already been renewed for a second season! Good news, since i quite like the show up until now.

And i agree with BenFranklin, this is one of those shows where it all depends on dialog. And if there is one thing that the sole writer Aaron Sorkin (i am not kidding! This entire show gets written, and entirely credited to this guy. There are other writers on board, but they get virtually no credit at all) can do it is writing great pieces of dialog.

When it comes to dialog i definitely see some similarities in quality of the script between this tv show and movies from for example Quentin Tarantino, or the Coen brothers.

The pilot was good, but they lost me on the second episode because of TOOOO MUCH talking!
It's not the quantity, but the quality of dialogs that makes a show great.

I'll stay with "Boss" (http://trakt.tv/show/boss-2011) which is pretty similar, but more compelling.

loading replies

looks like it will be a decent show, if it can save itself from sorkin's political grandstanding (e.g. "worst period generation period ever period"). will watch another few episodes, solely on the basis of the west wing (which was excellent).
