[7.6/10] Another solid episode in a row! How about it?
As someone who’s Jewish and married to a shiksa, I was cringing at the humor the show was going to try to wring from the Ruxin family civil war over what faith Baby Geoffrey would be raised in, but it turned out pretty well! I got a big kick out of Sofia referring to latkes as “Jewish hashbrowns” and Ruxin’s sister not only doing the “hrm” but doing the usual Ruxin family takedowns of “The Rod Man” and his friends was a treat. Plus, I loved the way Ruxin bringing a Rabbi to try to win Baby Geoffrey’s soul backfires on him when the Rabbi questions the ethics of his fantasy football league shenanigans.
I also got a kick out of the Andre/Taco/Vernon Davis situation. I’m rooting for Andre to finally get some payback on Pete after years (decades?) of humiliation, even if the laws of sitcoms suggest that it’s hard to expect his revenge to come to fruition. But I like the whole fake twitter account scheme, and the fact that the actual Vernon Davis gets involved, but wants Taco to run his twitter account, is a little contrived but still a fun wrinkle to everything. Taco’s complete inability to understand the subterfuge of it is a laugh.
I was less enamored with Kevin thinking that Jenny was cheating on him with her ex, Ben (Ryan Hansen!), if only because it seemed like such an obvious misdirect. But the other side of the coin is that the flashback montage to Kevin being inattentive, and the continuing gags about his goldfish memory got a laugh out of me, so I suppose I can’t complain too hard. Plus, him being just as mad that Ben’s giving her fantasy football advice in lieu of him, and it adding to the chaos of the Chanukah celebration, is a good beat.
Overall, this was a fun episode that felt in line with what The League normally does, and gives me hope that maybe the show is in a bit of an upswing at the end of the season.
