[6.8/10] Well, so ends another season of the league. This one is mostly fine, but veers into the show’s usual broad, easy comedy in a way that leaves “fine” as, more or less, it’s ceiling.
While I didn’t care for Ruxin roaming around polling everyone over who he should start at his flex, it did lead to the funniest part of the episode -- his interactions with Rafi’s. Jason Mantzoukas is just a font of raunchy, ridiculous comedy and his energy elevates the show in every scene. Him going MMA on Ruxin to get him to stop thinking was great. And Ruxin winning the league and having the end times come is a decent enough thought, but a little too cartoony even for this show.
I did enjoy the bit with the McArthurs. Jenny worrying about falling down on her half of the relationship while Kevin is messing with her line-up is a solid, if sitcom-y premise. Though Kevin’s whole lipreading porn thing is ridiculous and dumb. I also got a kick out of the gang trying to explain to Taco that he didn’t want to Sacko trophy, with him completely unable to understand.
The whole thing with Andre having a curse, in the form of “dre-ids” was in pretty poor taste, not especially clever, and beaten into the ground the way this show does regularly. It’s just part and parcel with everyone being a dick to Andrew for no reason. And Peter pretending to be a cop since he bought a Crown Vic is another broad sitcom idea that at least ends in a semi-clever way.
Overall, season 2 goes out with more of a whimper than a bang, but that’s kind of what I’ve come to expect from the show. We’ll see if I can make it through season 3.
