A rare genuinely sweet episode from the show, to go along with its usual self-reinvention. Goodbye, the fake Good Place!
[7.8/10] It’s the end of the [Fake Good Place] as we know it, and I feel fine. That’s the spirit of this one, a slack episode that’s more of a hangout and reflection on the adventure so far. There’s not much story, just our heroes hanging out, showing appreciation for one another after all they’ve been through, and I certainly enjoyed it!
The theme, as the title portends, is being one’s best self, and I like how the show figures that out for the different characters. Chidi has helped them all become better people. Eleanor is willing to take “leaps into faith” and Tahani and Jason are kinder, more grounded folks as well.
But the crux of this one comes with Michael, who it’s revealed is becoming more and more human. It’s a solid throughline, where he finds himself having to deal with emotions beyond just “anger and confusion”, and admits that he was stalling for time to get them into the good place and couldn’t do it. (Another twist!) It’s a unique setup with him being able to feel remorse for his actions thanks to the ethics lessons, and then feeling joy at the box of useless junk that is the “being human starter kit.”
Mostly though, I just enjoyed the hangout vibe of everyone having a party atmosphere, sharing the feelings for one another, and having one last blowout in the place where they all became friends. It’s a bit of a victory lap, but it’s funny and charming.
The plot has to move though! So Tahani uses her “I’ll speak to your manager” skills to inspire a plan to go through the real bad place to get to “The Judge.” It’s foolish and full of false confidence and doomed to “fail spectacularly” but damn if that doesn’t make it promising for this wild show, that so far, has had the chutzpah to change its status quo time and time again. Color me excited.
i love michaels human starter kit
I'm getting a little tired of Chidi: even Jason has grown as a character while his whole purpose seem to create unnecessary moral dilemmas to drag 5mins of the episode.
Cool for the rest tho and nice ending
Lmao I loved that human starter kit. That banana case... I never used one :joy:
Cute how this season incorporated Michael. It’s a bit hard to believe you’d be alright with someone torturing you for this long, but hey, maybe the show is trying to make a point that it is “human to forgive” or something.
Jason’s version of hell though.
“I’ll be at a skrillex concert and waiting for the bass to come... and ... and ... breaks out in tears and it’ll never come!”
I really thought this would be the last episode, ending on another cliffhanger. I was wrong.
21 minutes too long... snoozefest
And way, way too much Eleanor.
« All I’ve really ever wanted was to know what it feels like to be human. And now we’re going to do the most human thing of all. Attempt something futile with a ton of unearned confidence and fail spectacularly!
Get up, get up! Everyone! Get rest tonight! First thing tomorrow, we are going to the Bad Place».
-
«Tutto quello che ho sempre voluto era sapere che cosa si prova a essere umani. E ora stiamo per fare la cosa più umana di tutte. Tentare qualcosa di vano, carichi di infinita fiducia ingiustificata e fallire in modo spettacolare!»
«So, in a way, it doesn’t matter if I was better in version 492 or whatever because the best version of me is just as much about my effect on the world around me, as it is about my own egocentric self-image. I really meant that much to you guys?»
—
«...non importa se sono stato migliore nella versione 492 o chissà in quale, perché la versione migliore di me riguarda più.. il mio effetto sul mondo intorno a me, che la mia egocentrica immagine di me stesso».
Upon rewatching there's some foreshadowing layered in here which I love: Chidi tells Eleanor that he wishes they've met on earth in different ways including "You come knocking on my office door asking for help with philosophy" which they indeed do in the finale!

The left nipple of Optimus Prime... Jason is adorable!
That human starter kit was eerily accurate.
I'll miss the fake Good Place... But I can't wait to see what the Bad Place will be like. I'm guessing the rest of the season will be spent there (not that many episodes left, I know). Sweet!
