still don't feel it needed a second season, but they certainly didn't f**k it up as it delivers a mature closure, yet another lovely surprise from a delightfully nihilistic series
Quite a fitting end. I didn't know that I needed this season but now that I've got it. I just feel like I got closure. Hopefully they don't ruin it with a third season.
I think I'm one of the very few people who didn't really care about season 1 but absolutely loved season 2
I definitely didn't expect the shift in the tone, more depressing and sad with Alyssa being in the center (loved, loved, loved Jessica Barden! so good at both delivering sharp digs with a stone cold face and at being the saddest girl on TV lol) but oh how I cherished it! They're all sad and desperate to get better (each one in their own way) and my heart kept breaking for all of them (JUSTICE FOR TODD).
also, if the final episode makes me cry silently into my phone on the train, I must consider it a pretty good ending lol
The first season seemed like a complete story with a definitive ending. There was a justified question of why this continuation was necessary. I'm glad to say that the creators took the opportunity to continue the story of Alyssa and James by going in a new direction and not repeating what had come before.
The visual look of the show is still there (it really is gorgeously shot, and looks markedly different to other British TV shows; somehow more expensive) as well as the fairly unique locations. Lots of trees and green, some lovely use of low light. Alyssa and James are also the same characters but their experiences have affected them greatly.
The biggest theme of this season is consequences. The two main characters face the repercussions of their actions and not just from the law, but psychologically. They are forced to face what they did and question how they can move forward, whether they do it alone or with each other. They begin to realise how their actions affect those around them. It was a bold move and instantly compelling. Alyssa especially has some real trauma from what she went through and begins to realise that she needs help to make better decisions. James now understands what it means to take a life and how it feels to lose the life of someone close to him. These characters together are electric; they both desperately need each other while they can bring out the worst. It's only once they realise the mistakes they've made that they can build some positives with each other.
Jessica Barden is honestly so good as Alyssa, I think there's a danger of her being typecast or unable to break away from this character.
The biggest addition to the show is the new character Bonnie. She is both the biggest asset to the season while also being the biggest problem. Her story varies wildly from absolutely compelling to utterly dull. The performance from Naomi Ackie is fantastic and she finds that perfect balance between friendly and unsettling, but her character ends up being very loosely defined. In the end she's a perfect companion for the deeply damaged James and Alyssa. The show uses Bonnie extremely well by the end, but the journey there can be frustrating.
There's a bit less comedy this time around, the show feels like it's attempting to grow up in the same way James and Alyssa are. This probably isn't quite as entertaining and carefree as season 1 was, but I think the story is ultimately more satisfying. I can't see a third season being at all needed, but I admit it may be fun to check in on these two characters later down the line.
Honestly, season 2 was such an unnecessary addition to an amazing, open-ended, finale given to us by season 1. Even though she was the main villan of this season, I couldnt really care for Bonnie or how she was emotionally abused by Cline, without understanding what love waqs supposed to be, I only saw her as an intimidating, intense villan throughout the series. This season also kinda made me hate Alyssa, I understand that she went through a lot, from being almost sexually assualted, to her shitty relationship with her dad and mom, but that doesnt excuse how she behaved towards Todd, James, and even Gwen(wasting her money). James' character arc was mostly completed in season 1, the only think i liked about him in this new season was when he bonded with Phil before Phil died, it was a sweet scene seeing Phil being a better parent to James. After that, we just saw James struggling to win back Alyssa and confess to her. Also im really dissapointed that we didnt see Gwen and Alyssa's relationship explored more this season, after Alyssa realizied that Gwen sent the letters to her in season 1, I was hoping for something more regarding their relationship then just Alyssa moving back in.
I was pleasantly surprised by this season. The first season was pretty good but the second season really went to a new level. It felt like there was a brand new writer as their was some excellent use of music in the telling of the story. The addition of a third character and her story helped a lot as it gave the show a bit of balance. Hopefully that is the end of the series - it concluded right where it should.

i liked this season, the whole series, actually not a lot of people gonna like it bc its different, that's why i liked so much
Felt so sad when it was over. With that said, season two provides a perfect ending to the series and I wouldn't want another season.
I loved the first season, liked the second - mainly because of the chemistry between both main actors and its great soundtrack. Unfortunately the road movie vibe that carried the first season is gone, the whole 8 episodes feel like a quite too long sequel without any surprising or overly entertaining plot twists. It's not a disappointment at all, nobody seriously expected season two to come close to its predecessor -however, after having seen this season, I'd say, it would have been best they sticked with first seasons open end.
Actually, season 2 of this show redeemed it. What felt arbitrary in s1 was mostly explained, or at least had been attempted to have been made into actual plot. Not bad for a show that was supposed to end and had a weak first season.
Hey, this second season wasn't shit, it was pretty okay. Maybe even more than okay. I guess. We got some closure wich is nice. Definitely recommending it if you want to chill out, make a laugh or two and absolutely staying on your couch from the first episode to the end, or something. Oh, and also be a bit scared.

What I’ve loved about this season is that they didn’t change anything it goes on the same line as it was in the season 1
