If "Act Your Age" was the emotional finale, "Last Day of Summer" is the narrative finale. And because of that, it's incredibly interesting to me that they decided to go back to basics for it. In a lot of ways, "Last Day of Summer" is the smallest scale of the specials, but also in a lot of ways it has the most at stake, the most about to crash down. Candace and Doof have always been the real leads of the show, and this finale understands that in order to properly end the show, it's gonna focus on them. And smartly, the show brings us to the resolutions these characters have been needing since the beginning.
Candace has been needing to put aside her obsession and enjoy the summer, while Doof needs to recognize who his true family is and stop pretending to be somebody he isn't. And no better is this showcased then when Phineas and Ferb themselves get sucked out of the plot entirely, leaving the setting itself to collapse (such a great detail!) in their wake. And the last 5 minutes are satisfying to long term fans as well as on a narrative level - the final shot will leave you sobbing in a good way. Fantastic.
