A hillbilly (Earl) decides to turn his life around when karma finally catches up with his ways. He wins $100,000 in the lottery, only to get run over by a car and loose the winning ticket. Immediately afterwards, his wife divorces him and takes his home. This leads Earl to conclude that he didn't deserve the winning ticket because of all the bad he has done on his life. Henceforth, he decides to make up for everything bad he has done --- and he has written a list to keep track.
In this pilot episode, he regrets having bullied Kenny as a child when they were in school together, so he decides to help him experience happiness --- since Earl had been the source of so much unhappiness. Comic relief ensues after it is discovered that Kenny is gay. Earl tries to back out of his resolution, citing special circumstances, but immediately bad things start happening to him again. Therefore he encourages Kenny to attend a gay bar in the city by accompanying him there. With the support of Earl, Kenny visits a gay bar, and ends up gaining confidence into living openly as a gay man. And very soon after, as if to reward Earl's decision to continue redressing his wrongs, the wining lottery ticket that he had lost in the accident is blown by the wind to his feet --- giving him the means to actually follow through on his resolution.
Hilarious show with hilarious characters! I specially like Crab-man, a black friend of Earl with whom Earl's ex-wife had an affair (and a child while married to Earl), and for whom she left Earl. And yet Earl is quite friendly to wards him... That detail in itself is funny because is so out of character with expectations.
