[7.3/10] Lord knows I’m a sucker for a good Star Trek parody, so the Mr. Show gang spoofing the overdubbed kid (Clint Howard!) from “The Corbomite Maneuver” got a laugh out of me. The whole content warnings hook was a little mild, but the spoof was well done, so it got a pass from me, and the wrap-around at the end with Bob and David as the kid’s show and tell project was a funny payoff.
I did get a big kick out of the “Political Debate turned Insult Comic Roast” skit. It was a slow starter, but once it got going, it really shined. The shift from David’s character taking it all with good humor to outright crying at Paul F. Thompkins’s jabs was well done. David really sold that sketch with his reactions.
The “send me classical music pieces I remembered from various movies and T.V. shows” was a pretty mild sketch, but at least it was short and went into some loony territory.
I didn’t love the Inside the Actor’s Studio skit. I know this is blasphemy to Mr. Show fans, but I think SNL did this better with Will Ferrell’s take on the fawning qualities of James Lipton than David did. And the Incredible Voyage/Land of the Lost bit was a strange place to take the skit (kind of feels like the end of the “Chip on the Shoulder Club” sketch) that didn’t get many laughs out of me.
The same goes for the “Walking” skit. It had its moments, but the parody of news magazine repetition and weird spotlight stories was pretty shallow without a lot of independent humor.
That said, the last big sketch was another slow starter, but one that earned plenty of laughs by the end. The notion of an award for saddest songs, and the escalating series of mishaps and murder involving the statuette, which naturally prompts more sad songs, is a nice high concept bit. Some of the actual song parodies were fairly mild, but the riffs on vapid awards show dialogue was pitch perfect, and the writing for the sketch was outstanding.
Overall, a few duds in the middle, but some quality Mr. Show goodness in this one too.
