[7.6/10] Very enjoyable episode. The opening bit about reparations to Jews from the Swiss was fairly meh, and the Mississippi fun bucks schtick was on the nose, but the follow-up sketch, with the obvious sting operation and oblivious criminal was great. It’s another great example of Mr. Show’s comic escalation, where Bob just makes it more and more clear that this is all a setup, but David still goes with it throughout. And the button with “America’s Dumbest Juries” was a nice way to wrap it up.
My favorite sketch of the night was the Greeley vs. McHutchence ads. The fact that they were styled like political ads, but really just guys arguing over who was better made for a fun premise. And the twist of the priest making an ad to get them to stop, and then the two of them working together to bring him down was another outstandingly ludicrous turn.
The “Hunter Describes His Lion Encounter” seemed like it was going to be a “going blue for the sake of going blue” sketch, but just got more and more ridiculous in its descriptions of scrotum-based terror that eventually it wrapped back around to being funny. The pitch perfect old timey verbiage for everything definitely helped on that front.
The world’s oldest news team was really only chuckle-worthy, but it was short enough to ride that to the end. The plane crash survivor skit was a mixed bag, with the show trying to take some place beyond its premise and never really managing it. That said, Odenkirk’s ravenous but deceased-tributing cannibal character hit some specific and absurd notes that were worth a laugh.
The Ken Burns style documentary of civil war reenactors had laughs that were a little too few and far between for my tastes, but it had some solid gags and it’s a cute idea that Community would do better a few years down the line. Bits like there being multiple Lincolns, or Star Trek nerds crashing the party, or the reenactment taking place in the parking lot were all quite good.
While I’m always up for a good pledge drive joke, the “y’all got any fake poo” finish didn’t do much for me. That said, there was plenty of very good comedy in this one as Mr. Show rounds out its run.
