It wasn't the most memorable finale ever, but it also didn't need to be. When you have an ensemble cast this size, it's difficult to incorporate all 11 main players in a heartfelt goodbye that encapsulates everyone's feelings of family, togetherness, and finality. After having watched this, I read an interview w/ co-creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, where they explained that they were both fans of finales, where the characters were saying goodbye, b/c that's what the audience was doing, as well, and I agree w/ this premise.
The last montage was of the camera panning over framed pictures of all the characters taken from the past 11 years, finally settling on a family portrait taken in the season one finale w/ their white outfits splattered w/ mud. This was the only keepsake Christopher Lloyd took from the set, fittingly saying of it, "I thought that if we had to land on one image, that's a good one because it is sort of metaphorical: Families are messy, but beautiful at the same time."
the finale was okay, typical for a sitcom! bye bye Modern Family
Can't believe it's over. 11 years of this family and now it's over. Always a bittersweet feeling when a show ends but I do like it when they go out on a high rather than drag it along for as long as possible. The moment was right and the stories 'ended' nicely.
Overall I felt like this season was rushed, we needed those extra 5 episodes to make a 22 episodes season, like we never saw mitch and cam introducing their new baby to the family, luke was always in the background and dylan never got any solo scenes, also I waited 12 years to see what those testimonials were about and they didn’t acknowledge it!!! It would’ve been cool if the last scene was Jay turning off the camera or like a flash forward with the twins and Rexford and maybe an extra kid a few years older and they are watching the tapes or something!!! Like what’s the point of a mockumentary if you don’t acknowledge it at some point.
I liked all the endings, Luke going to college and having a business project, Alex living out to her expectations and trying out different jobs and going away to a new one, Manny finally experiencing real life to have real adventures, Hayley’s had a chance for improvement instead of making her just the mom, Claire getting her dream job on her own merits, Phil always happy, Gloria and Jay growing as a couple and switching the roles and Jay finally opening up to Gloria’s culture... BUT MITCH AND CAM’s???? honestly they are the worst couple ever, super toxic and I resent Cam for breaking up the family and making Mitch give up on their dream life, Mitch never forced Cam to be on California, Cam lived there when they met and fast forward to the present they both have great jobs, their dream house, just adopted a baby and just give up on everything for Cam to coach in hillbilly college?? I know Mitch is divorcing him, coming back to california and live his best life with Lily. Also it was shocking seeing that Gloria doesn’t care about Cam at all, I thought they were close and she was like “we’ve interacted 8 times, good trip.”
Cute show, cute ending but I’ll always complain about the testimonials!!
God, I cried my eyes out at my job, in the middle of the night. I'll miss this show so much! :sob:
I am SO sad. Goodbye, 11 years of Modern Family
Good finale. Something that apparently it hard to achieve nowadays
I already miss Phil (aka Modern Family’s MVP):cry::cry:
I will miss this show so much! Farewell Modern Family!
Modern Family was a great show that never failed to deliver.
Sad to see it end.
i will miss this series so much my post series depression is kicking real hard. i wanna see another season of them… if only it’s possible. anyway, i’m really thankful of this show. it has brought me great comfort on days i wasn’t feeling good and wanted an escape with something light, witty & funny all at the same time. modern family gave me that. i will miss the three families, i swear. thank you so much to the whole team and its cast. i will miss this so much.
At least a normal good ending but the last 2 or 3 season where just bad..........
an end to one of the greatest series ever. au revoir, modern family!
It was a rush finale, I expected something way more overwhelming. Something huge. And it was just a double episode on double speed.

It was a beautiful finale. Nothing truly groundbreaking but I thought they did a great job wrapping the show. So many sweet moments – the Dunphy siblings, Phil and Jay, Claire and Mitch’s misadventure, Jay learning Spanish, and the ending shot - leaving that porch light on, symbolism of how Claire and Phil know their kids will return at some point.
I liked it for the most part but I think the ending seemed rushed and it’s a little unrealistic that so many family members are leaving at once. I’m glad they didn’t go with Jay passing away and I really loved the parallels between the first and last scenes of the show - Phil and Claire going over their calendar, Jay and Gloria at the football match, and Mitch and Cam on a flight. I expected Cam to top the first baby reveal. The Lion King one will forever go down in history.
A hugely missed opportunity not to address the documentary element. We'll never know why these people have been interviewed for 11 years.
