I wasn't won over by this premiere, but neither am I writing off the show entirely. I can see potential here. Unfortunately, this pilot spends a bit too much time on characters that I don't think I liked very much. The young-adult angle means it's focused on teenage angst which isn't great, but some of the writing felt like it was designed to make people idiots. The hockey kids that Connor spoke to seemed to actually state that it was cool that he got to watch his dad murdered in front of him - surely even teenagers aren't that moronic?
On the plus side, I was entranced by Echo. What a great voice! Bode is very young so I guess he can be somewhat forgiven for falling for such an obvious trick, but his mother certainly can't be for just walking into the creepy mirror of doom. I wish TV characters would be allowed to have at least a little bit of common sense once in a while.
The ending mirror sequence did suggest that there is the potential for some crazy/spooky fun ahead. I'll keep watching for now.
Why the f*** would anyone follow a creepy face into a mirror? She didn't even know what the key was supposed to do...
I mean, I know I'm watching a show and I still get creeped out...
Whoever wrote the youngest kid's dialog has not recently talked to any children, that's for sure.
A great start! I was surprised at how well balanced the episode was. A little family drama, a very little school drama, and lots of mystery.
All are weird af and then i saw the woman in the well xD
Made me want to visit Nova Scotia, that's for sure.
I like the casting, and since I'm sympathetic to the demands place on a pilot episode, I'm more forgiving of any pacing problems. This one was solid all around, and while I think that a nonlinear narrative is usually a gimmick or a thin coat of paint for a weak story, I found that it worked well here.
The trailer looked interesting so I wanted to check this out. Pretty decent setting so far; big mysterious mansion with kids uncovering the magic within it reminds me of The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) and The House with a Clock in its Walls (2018). Another thing I'm noticing lately is more and more films and TV shows are taking place and being filmed around my area - Massachusetts/Boston (including The Haunting of Hill House, The Christmas Chronicles, Ghostbusters (2016), I Feel Pretty (2018), Castle Rock season two, the list goes on). Right away, I recognize the kid who played Georgie in the recent It films and from The Prodigy, a horror film I saw last year, and of course the Ice Man himself Shawn Ashmore. Wait.. scratch that last one, I just looked up the cast, and it turns out that it's actually Aaron Ashmore who is a twin brother of Shawn Ashmore, surprisingly!
I haven't read the IDW comics that this show was based on, but I'm digging the concept of each key capable of a different ability. Apparently, there was a Locke & Key pilot back in 2011 that FOX refused to pick up, and a Hulu one in 2018. I have a feeling that the youngest Locke (played by Jackson Robert Scott) will be a gullible burden to the family, similar to the youngest child in the Lost In Space series. Let's see how this goes.
:key2:
Firstly, how did Scot know Kinsey's phone number to send her anything when he found her at the school? And the mom says nothing when her youngest son flips her off and says aloha? Nevermind the fact that she leaves him by himself.
The guy that stabbed himself with the key and died in the beginning is the kid in the photo on the left and the girl that is with Kinsey's father in the photo appears to be wearing the bracelet that Kinsey's father gave to her the Bode got the key from. Is that really their mom at the end, or did Tyler pull out something else? Interesting start so far.
I hate mirror mazes. So I am deeply uncomfortable right now.
Hmm I can see how this has got a lot of potential, but I’m also seeing how this can easily become underwhelming. The story is great, but possibly better on paper than on screen.
A lot of exposition (hoping that's an EP 1 thing only), some of the kids dialogue was very weak. But the mystery so far is a lot of fun. Enjoyed it.
Why is Ice Cream guy trying so hard to befriend the daughter?
The stupidest series, with the stupidest characters. Every time they do something stupid just to move the story. Everyone on this show is a complete idiots

Feels like you’re watching a fantasy for the whole family at first. Like Spiderwick Chronicles for example. Except Locke & Key is from Joe Hill “Stephen King’s son”, so it’s occasionally pretty creepy and messed up.
