[7.5/10] The patter was so damn good in this one. You have Rory razzing Lorelai for starting project and never finishing them, with the amusing yarn about all the catalogues they’ve received. You have Taylor frantically trying to get rid of local birds and stomp on the civil rights of the Stars Hollow loner while all the rest of the town wants to do is dish about Miss Patty’s new beau. You even have Luke giving Jess the business about his new job and the town reacting to the loner’s incomprehensible protest. The dialogue is so snappy and enjoyable in this one that it makes the whole thing fun.
The only part about this one I didn’t like was the actual time at Sherri’s baby shower. I understand the narrative convenience and potential that prompted the show to do it, but it’s pretty contrived to have Lorelai there at all. (Heck, it’s a little contrived to have Rory there.) And Sherri is less like an actual person and more an obnoxiously perfect straw man designed to frustrate Lorelai.
As I often say, I like what they’re trying to do here -- make Sherri into Lorelai’s polar opposite, and have Lorelai be frustrated with how her erstwhile rival has essentially commandeered the life she never got to have with Christopher and was denied a chance to rekindle the possibility of, and how she’s even making overtures toward Rory, an understandable fault line for Lorelai.
But she’s less a human being than a construct for Lorelai to be mad at. Sure, there’s some amusing stuff at the party (mainly the African American woman’s understandable reaction to , friend saying that Sherri and Christopher are the “poster for Aryan breeding”), but it’s all really broad and just too much.
It does lead to some nice Rory/Lorelai moments, which is something the show’s always good at. The two of them exorcising their shared frustrations by (deviled) egging Jess’s car is a funny bit of the ol’ Gilmore quirk, and a nice sign of their solidarity to reassure Lorelai that her daughter is always on her side.
Once again, I even liked the Jess story! They’re slowly but surely redeeming the character in my eyes (no small feat). It’s not that big of a deal on the surface, but the fact that Jess decides he wants something, and then goes and gets a job to get it, is a noble thing from the otherwise disaffected youth. The story of Luke being suspicious of where Jess got the money for his car, and snooping around until he finds the answer (replete with some amusing repartee with Gypsy and Jackson), is a good way to tease out the reveal.
Overall, the baby shower bit is a little unbelievable and brings the episode down a notch, but there’s lots of great bits and even a nice step in maturing Jess a bit.
