Ryan's activities impact the Coleman-Waterwood family in more ways than one. Evan deals with the reprecussions of having an unsafe work environment. Patrick Dixon, the rude and manipulative town mayor, moves back to Dixon with his daughter Lauren following the accident.
The family battles emotions that come with Ryan's funeral. Leah wonders if she is to blame for Ryan's apparent "suicide," meanwhile being questioned by the new chief of police, Jake Campbell. Evan recieves a visit from Patrick, who tells Evan that him and his company are at fault for Ryan's accident.
Jake wants to reveal his motives for taking a job in Dixon to Evan, but decides to wait until after the investigation. Meanwhile, Amanda notices a difference in Avery's mood and asks for Violet's help figuring out the problem, and Leah recieves an unexpected visit from Daniel's parents, who demand Daniel's belongings from Leah, including his house.
A Coleman family meeting surrounding the investigation puts everyone on edge. Jake tries to learn information about the Colemans through Evan, Leah conflicts with Daniel's parents, while also looking for a new place to live, and Violet rats out a family member to the police.
Mackenzie returns to Dixon as a suspect in the investigation. Lauren Dixon, the mayor's daughter, applies for a job at Waterwoods Materials. Meanwhile, Amanda finally gains the courage to ask Avery why she is acting different, and Leah gives up the fight against Daniel's parents.
When the investigation is unexpectedly dropped, Avery and Amanda look for the reason why and eventually discover Mackenzie was arrested for Ryan and Daniel's murder. Meanwhile, Lauren is welcomed by Violet on her first day at Waterwoods Minerals, and Leah looks into moving away from Dixon for good.
Leah's plans of leaving Dixon are foiled when a check-up at the doctor's office reveals a pregnancy. Patrick visits Violet's office and threatens her into giving Lauren a promotion. Evan overhears a phone call between Jake and his mother, learning the truth about why Jake came to Dixon in the first place.
When Avery faints behind the wheel and ends up in a car accident, she is taken to the hospital where the doctors diagnose a major and unoperable brain tumour pressing on her optic nerve. Leah looks into who the father of her baby could be, and Evan confronts Jake about what he heard.
In this special episode focused on Jake, he investigates a case that reminds him of his past and struggles to see it through when feelings get in the way.
Amanda and Avery are met with a solution: travel to France and meet Dr. Fiona Gardner, a world-renowned neurosurgeon who could possibly save Avery's life, or kill her in the process. Ryan and Daniel's graves are opened up to retrieve DNA from their corpses to find out whose baby Leah is carrying. Evan sends his DNA to a genetics lab, hoping for some answers.
Amanda packs for the big flight to France that could possibly save Avery's life, Leah anxiously waits for the paternity test results, and Evan gets his DNA results back which reveal that Jake is his half-brother. Meanwhile, Violet and Lauren get to know eachother.
In the beginning of the two-part winter finale, Avery and Amanda arrive in Bordeaux, France, and plan to spend some time together before the surgery, but a sudden complication sends Avery to the hospital earlier than expected. In the meantime, Leah learns that Daniel is the father of her baby, Evan shares the news with Jake, and Violet takes her own ancestry test.
In the conclusion of the two-part winter finale, Avery and Amanda fly home after the successful surgery that saved Avery's life, but celebrations end early when their plane crashes into an island in the middle of the ocean, leaving Amanda fighting for her life and Avery missing. Leah visits the stables in Dixon in an effort to bring back memories of Daniel, but gets run over by a horse and is left unconscious and bleeding.
In the spring premiere, still stuck on the island, Amanda tries to find Avery while the pilot attempts to get rescue. Meanwhile, a horse trainer at the stables finds Leah collapsed on the ground and brings her to the hospital, and Violet's results come back and she makes a shocking discovery regarding her true father.
It's been a week since the plane crash. Leah awakes from a coma and discovers she had a miscarriage from a placental abruption caused by the horse accident. A depressed and traumatized Amanda is put into a mental hospital. Evan takes care of JC, while Violet works up the courage to tell Lauren that they are half-sisters.
In this episode focused on Lauren, she deals with the infidelity of her father as she thinks back to her childhood and reflects on a car accident she was in as a child.
Violet goes down a rabbit hole of her family history and discovers a story taking place in the 60s; this episode is a backdoor pilot into the prequel series "The Ancestors".
Evan visits Leah in the hospital and helps her find a villa in Spain to move into once she recovers. Elsewhere, Violet recieves a visit from Lauren, who is upset with Patrick for cheating on her mother and wants to get back at him.
Violet and Evan take JC to visit Amanda in the mental hospital, Leah is released from the hospital, and Jake visits Waterwoods Minerals, expecting to find Evan, but instead meets Lauren, who he immediately catches feelings for.
Amanda is finally released from the mental hospital. Meanwhile, Evan helps Leah pack for her emigration to Spain, and Lauren concocts a plan to take down Patrick for cheating on her mother.
Leah ties up loose ends in Dixon to ensure her emigration to Spain is as smooth and relaxing as possible, but in order to do so, she needs to make amends with an old enemy: Sonya Petrozzini.
Leah says her final goodbye to the town of Dixon. Jake tries to flirt with Lauren while she shares her plan to take down Patrick with Violet, but with so many things on the go, Lauren is oblivious to the flirting. Meanwhile, Amanda meets a woman named Claire who went through a similar situation as her.
On the day of the blackmail against Patrick, Violet freaks out and puts it on hold until after the holidays. Jake gains the courage to ask Lauren an intense question. Evan feels a bit of a gap between him and Violet.
The holidays bring mixed feelings to the Colemans and their friends and family. Amanda deals with the emotions that come when Avery is announced "presumed deceased." Jake's mother, Madison Campbell, visits Dixon and announces her engagement but won't say to whom. Lauren and Jake go on their date.
Violet uses Patrick's affair to blackmail him into leaving the town forever - and making Violet the new mayor. Madison announces her engagement to Charlie Coleman, Evan and Violet renew their vows, and Leah returns home with Avery alive and well, who was previously thought to be deceased.
