“We're reviving a cancelled undercover police program from the '80s and revamping it for modern times. See, the guys in charge of this stuff lack creativity and are completely out of ideas. So all they do now is recycle shit from the past, and hope that nobody notices.”
― Capt. Hardy, '21 Jump Street' (2012)
A collection of films wherein things become either mildly self-aware, or crazily self-referential.
Many of these films are aware that they are films, and the very act of movie-making (or movie-watching) is factored into the experience, or coded into the narrative.

Shows that take place in a modern setting
This is England (2006): A story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight. They become his new best friends even like family. Based on experiences of director Shane Meadows. This is England '88 (2011): Set during Christmas 1988, Lol is haunted by the devastating events that took place two and a half years before. She and Woody both find themselves struggling to cope with their lives without each other after he leaves the gang. This is England '90 (2015): Following on from This Is England ’86 and ‘88, this much-anticipated final chapter finds the gang embracing the rave scene of a new decade. But the utter hilarity and unadulterated joy of the second ‘summer of love’ soon gives way to a war torn winter. As the stark reality of life takes hold and, ultimately, takes life.
Inspired by shock-documentaries like Mondo Cane, these 3 films looks at the wilder side of life in America.
The greatest war movies of all time.
July 2021-
A room, a house, a city, a country, a planet. This month we turn our gaze to environments: internal/external, familial/cultural, artificial/natural, terrestrial/cosmic. The environment enriches, but also punishes. Some try to change it, others embrace it. It’s a big ol’ world, and a crazy, crazy place. Join us for a walk through (im)material space as we explore THIS ISLAND EARTH.
