The Witches 1990

A classic film from the story of Roald Dahl. Love Rowan Atkinson in this, and Anjelica Huston is amazing!

Not what I was expecting but I had fun. The witch makeup is great and the mouse stuff didn't look terrible.

A wicked little children's chiller. Holds up surprisingly well, with great great effects from Jim Henson. One of the better Roald Dahl adaptations, even with the cop-out ending. May be too scary for the really little ones though...

The new version had potential but it’s not so good next this movie. Once was enough and I went back to only watching this version.
The new probably is more faithful. I do like that this one has a good witch though. The ending just is better here too.

Not bad. Possibly the worst Jim Henson creations(the mice) ever.

If you are curious about the 2021 ROALD DAHL’s THE WITCHES, here is it’s precursor from 1990, with Angelica Huston, Rowan Atkinson and the magic of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop (there are some other lovely surprises in the cast, as well). It’s a little dated and the script which is based on the same Roald Dahl book has some different plot threads but those who saw it first highly recommend it (and I think it is a little less terrifying for children than the 2021 production). I give the film a 7 (good) out of 10.

A good film for kids before trick or treating, even if I didn't fall under its spell.

Do you just love it when you revisit childhood movies, but realize now (as an adult) how disturbing and scary it is.

Roald Dahl doesn't mess around.

I read the book by Roald Dahl multiple times when I was younger, it used to be one of my favorite books to read. For many years I didn't know this film exicted, since I learned there was a film based on the classic Roald Dahl book, I wanted to see this film. I enjoyed other films based on his books, so I was curious if this was a good film as well. It did not dissapoint. I really enjoyed it and I thought it was a good addaptation of the book. The face you see when the witch takes of her mask looks real, the make up artist did a great job. If you grew up with the Roald Dahl books, you are definitely going to enjoy this film.
