This was powerful. I helped a family member through the early stages of this process earlier in the year, and watching Ordinary Love was chilling. It felt very authentic to the stages I was familiar with. It is so important that these health stories get told. I wonder how impactful it was to people with no breast cancer experiences to draw on.
I am out of touch with the Oscar race this year, but surely Lesley Manville is in contention.
Cancer is a bastard disease and its a reality for many. This film tackles the subject through a relationship drama, and does its job without resorting to easy sentimentality.

The best thing about this movie is the way it approaches a dramatic subject with subtlety. Supported by two great actors, who achieve nuances of their characters with minimal gestures, the script allows a presentation of life faced with cancer that shows the treatment process without avoiding the emotional movement it causes, but with a more realistic look. But that also causes a certain modesty in its aspirations.
