Visceral, astonishing, creepy, mind blowing, a flick of nature.
EDIT: There has never been a movie like this that I didn't like but I really wanted to read and talk more about with other people. I guess Darren Aronofsky at least got people talking about his movie, even if people didn't like it.
What a weird movie. I really thought the sound design was great. Really creepy and creates great tension.
So Jenifer Lawerence is Mother Earth and Javier Bardem is God? Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer are Adam and Eve and the heart crystal is the apple of eden? I don't know much about the bible but that is what I got. I guess the message Daron Aronofsky is trying to say is we treat the Earth like shit. It is going to kill us all but its bound to repeat again? I don't know, it is a weird movie.
EDIT2: So after seeing this after a long time of not thinking about it I realized that Darren Aronofsky really hates humans. The bat shit crazy third act can not make up for the boring first two acts. And knowing that this is just the bible made it even worse. I don't hate this movie but I'm definitely not a fan.
Worse than I thought possible. Aggressively absurd and arrogant. Places a puzzle where a plot should be. Substitutes concepts for characters. Painfully pretentious. Even when you figure it out, it's not worth the effort.
Like:
- Artistic and Beautiful Cinematography
- Creepy and disturbing sequence of events
- Solid character performances
- Heavily based on metaphors and symbolism which allows open ended discussions
Dislike:
- Might turn out many viewers due to its complexity
Plot Complexity:
Complex
Flow: (Act 1, 2, 3)
Great flow
Movie Facts:
Throughout the entire movie, no one's name is ever mentioned and not a single character is ever referred to by any name, the way they are listed in the end credits is by their given role in the story.
SoundTrack:
Fact: There is no musical score for the film, and not a single bit of music appears in the film whatsoever until the end credits, where "The End of the World" plays covered by singer Patti Smith.
Tedious, pretentious mess which thinks that it’s far smarter & subtle than it really is.
Not your typical horror film, but just as horrifying. I swear so many sequences in the movie are like most of my nightmares. Trying to stop a chain of events that refuse to be stopped. Bombarded with so many people around you invading your space. Trying to escape and leave a place but never being able to. So much of it was so hard to watch, yet so intriguing and so entertaining. I get that it’s filled with metaphors and it might not be for everyone, but it truly is something else and deserves to be given a chance.
Mi casa is not su casa godamn
A fantastic, bizarre, grotesque, and invigorating experience. This is possibly the weirdest, most absurd, extraordinary film I've ever seen. It's both meaningful and ridiculous, and for me was more of an experience than a story. I've read reviews that see it as pure garbage, and others say it's groundbreaking--well, it's both and that's why I loved it. Yes is has twisted biblical allegory, male egotism, narcissism, etc. layered in truck loads upon itself; however, Don't think too much and just let it devour you. It's an explosive roller coaster of psychotic breakdown, terror and FUN . . .
About the yellow powder, Aronofsky said in an interview that it makes a reference to a book of Victorian literature called The Yellow Wallpaper.Presented in first person, the story is a woman whose physician husband has rented an old mansion for the summer as a form of treatment from what he calls a "temporary nervous depression – a slight hysterical tendency", a diagnosis common to women in that period. The unnamed woman is forbidden from working and is encouraged to eat well and get plenty of exercise and air, so she can recuperate.
The story depicts the effect of understimulation her mental health and her descent into psychosis. With nothing to stimulate her, she at first hate the yellow wallpaper and ask her husband to move for other room, which he promptly respond her request as being rubbish.
So, as times goes on, she becomes obsessed by the pattern and color of the yellow wallpaper and starts wondering about it’s secrets. "It is the strangest yellow, that wall-paper! It makes me think of all the yellow things I ever saw – not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old foul, bad yellow things. But there is something else about that paper – the smell! ... The only thing I can think of that it is like is the color of the paper! A yellow smell."
This book is classified by many as a horror story, but the intension behind it goes far beyond this. It’s a critic to how women were treated in that time, not being taken seriously, depending aways of their husband.
Or it can be just a reference to animal sacrifices made in the old testament, as one friend of mine told me when we were in a discussion about the movie. Because every time someone "profanates" the house, Mother Earth drinks this powder, but when she gets pregnant, she throws it away because it is not necessary anymore since then she has her child who's the lamb who will be sacrificed to redeem for all the sins of humanity.
(ps: sorry for my poor english.)
Like it or not, these are the movies we should support. There haven't been much breakthrough in cinema for years, and believe me, Mother! is one of the forguard of movie storytelling.
That was the most wacko plot I've ever watched and i liked it XD
No amount of people trying to justify week plot, chaotic storytelling, characters that you will be unable to relate to their actions and choices, will ever justify watching this crap of a movie. It is like taking a "sh*t" in the museum and calling it an art. I like good movies, even non traditional and I can appreciate cleverness, but this is week sause. Form over the function :(
Story: (bad): The story is chaotic, one nonsense over the other. Leaps and bounds that even at the end make you feel like that was completely unnecessary.
Characters: (bad): Characters are so off-real behaving that I had real trouble connecting with them. They are with the main story why it does not work as they are not relatable. Other comments state this is great "horror", I did not experience single "horror" feeling in the whole movie I I think it stems from this as visual can be quite visceral.
Acting: (mediocre): All actors can act in the movie, sometimes it fell like over the board though. And could relate to above characters comment why they were unrelatable.
Visuals: (good/mediocre): Visuals were standard good movie grade. On other hand it seemed to me that the movie preferential visuals over the function of the movie and i think that is bad approach. I could not care for the visceral scenes as they seemed completely unnecessary, just to gross out audience.
Music: (bad): no music. I think sometimes good choice as it can provide on intensity, unfortunately if the story is bad and characters as well, it intensifies the badness of the movie. So in this case bad.
Overall: I really wish someone would give back the time and money spent on the movie. I would recommend not to watch
This movie was so boring. The only good part was Jennifer Lawrence's nipples.
What in the fucking fuck did I just watch?
WTF did I just watch and why did I keep watching till the end. Boring as f**k
This movie is really unbearable!!!
Bullshit ass movie. I didn't understood shit throughout the entire movie. Every time there was a glimpse of logical sense, the next scene throw it all by the window. When i searched the explanation of what i saw, i thought it was even dumber. 2 hours of my life to the thrash. If you are into "deep" bullshit with ulterior meaning-kind of movie, you will love this. Everyone else, don't watch it, is a waste of time
An intense and anxiety-inducing film, with pristine direction, great performances and a deeply symbolic plot, that unfolds in an unexpected manner.
Pseudo intelectual/philosophical piece of garbage of a movie.
The worst movie in the entire history of the movie making. It's literally impossible to create something worse than this. If you still want to see... I advised you.
What a stupid fucking predictable piece of shit movie
This would’ve stressed me tf out if I hadn’t read the whole synopsis first.
too weird for my taste. maybe I should have known before that this is all a metaphor for god, mother nature, cain and abel. good acting and cinematography though. the scene with the baby is not for everyone
"Baby?"
After giving it some thought, my mind has changed completely and how I admire the movie even more.
"mother!" is f**king nuts that by the end of it I was left speechless. What starts off as a slow burn thriller with sprinkle of mystery, turns into chaos of cruel humanity. Leaving a dark impression that left me shaking in shock which never happened before. Almost like I just witness murder.
The whole thing is one giant metaphor and is very clear of what it's trying to be. Despite the story being straight forward when you fully get a gasp of it, never did it come across pretentious, putting aside what people have said. The way it was told was so unique.
Darren Aronofsky brought what I call a 'disturbed honesty'. Something holy and yet so unholy. Dark and deep in the roots of humanity. Nothing this guy does feel like shock value, just a depressing portray of art.
I don't want to say anymore due to keeping things under wraps for people who know little about the film. The performances all around are fantastic and it's something that's gonna say with me for a long time.
To be honest, I've started to love the film even more as time to go on. Not for everyone, but with each thought, the more brilliant it becomes.
This film is a lot. Perhaps one of the most frustrating films of all time. Very flawed, yet I can't help but be enthralled by it.
One of the most anxiety inducing movies ever with the most infuriating characters.
During the movie, I was constantly thinking wtf am I watching. Couldn't understand what genre it is, if it's like a horror, psycho-thriller, drama, no idea. The movie is so weird and I've never seen something like this before, and I don't mean it as a compliment. It's true it caused me feelings, I felt anxious, claustrophobic, and sad for the girl during the movie, like I was never in peace while watching and couldn't wait for calm parts. The first half was still nice and understandable but then it just turns into a chaotic nightmare. But I also felt bad just for the actors in general for taking part in this weird thing. I'm still happy I watched it because it was an experience and wanted to give it a try, but def not gonna watch it anytime soon, I'm sorry.
Verry stange but verry good
After 3 years I'm still in rage when I think about this movie. I hated every minute about it. And the scene with the baby was too much. That's no entertainment for me.
Excellent. Can be confusing sometimes.
Very well acted, but freightning at times. Many Bible analegies which may not please some viewers. I thought it was excellent.
Slightly paranoid prapharase of our modern times. May it not be too prophetic in its final message.
Mindblowing. Everyone who I talked to prior to watching this either loved or hated the movie, so I knew I needed to know what I would think about this, on what group I would locate myself in. I can see why people would hate it. However, I can safely say I loved it, it's a fantastic piece of work. A bit confusing for those who don't know much about the bible therefore can't tell the parallels , but still, in my opinion, an outstanding movie. Don't think I'll forget about it any time soon.
One questions: Why would anybody make such a sick movie? Crazy af!
Tem filmes que temos que agradecer por existir.
quite the trip! it can be interpreted into various of meanings. Extraordinary performance by Jennifer Lawrence
This movie is, in every way, not what you expect. It's a genius way to tell a story, it's a genius way to make a horror film, and it's downright unnerving.
Meramente o pior filme do ano!
I wanted to see this movie ever since I saw the trailer and I had high hopes due to all the rumors I've heard but I have to say, this was mind blowing and a true masterpiece. I spend the entire movie trying to figure out the plot, how it all connected. I came up with several theories and I have to admit when it ended, I was still grasping... it wasn't until five minutes after when I browsed the internet that I fully understood what I watched and that it was my mind was blown.
A strong movie with a great cast.
I love how this movie has split people down the middle. Boring and pretentious? Or is it a work of art? I err on the latter, but it's certainly not for all tastes. People have talked about the film as a Biblical allegory. That may have been the director's point, but to be honest, the theology within the film is a little confused. Still, there are moments that are spellbinding, a real waking nightmare for the mother of the title, and while overly bizarre at times, it was still beautifully made. Not perfect then, but still a treat for the patient viewer, especially those looking for something out of the mainstream. More like this please.
well this is for sure not a movie for everyone and especially not for the masses. one thing is for sure: love it or hate, you wont forget this one. Especially the crazy and insane last act. Very good for a group discussion!
The first 3/4s of Mother! impressed me for its visual aspect but frustrated me as regards the story... but then came the final 10 minutes. At the end of the film things fall into place and a lot of the symbolism is explained. I'm not saying I understood everything, but I got the main points, which was more than satisfying for a first time viewing.
As for the haters out there... Why is it when David Lynch makes an artsy film that's difficult to follow everyone applauds his audacity, yet when Darren Aronofsky does it, then it's suddenly pretentious shite? Seriously, who goes to a Darren Aronofsky film expecting "House at the End of the Street"? Have they not seen Black Swan? Aronofsky is known for his think pieces, and here we are made to think to the background of stunning imagery and thoughtful filmmaking. If you want to hate a film for not being accessible, take it out on Enemy or Under the Skin, but leave my Mother! alone.
Not one minute I liked. Horrible movie for a personality I have.
only intelligent people will understand this movie and i understood
Dark, twisted and incredibly disturbing. Not for everyone, but worth a watch. I liked it.
this is a normal movie in no way. the story is not straight forward and i went online afterwards to read what it was about. it's all metaphorical and ideas, and not a plot like we are used to. it's in the genre of The Fountain, Tree of Life, Knight of Cups, etc.
Its really a love it or hate it film. If you're just into casual watching - don't watch this one.
I didn't like it.
Biggest pile of turd ever. God that was awful...
Did I like it? No. Was it was disturbing as they say? Yes.
Jennifer Lawrence's intimate performance holds the whole thing together.

Dumb
Don’t waiste your time unless you like watching metaphoric crap with no plot.
WTF am I watching. I feel like the movie should be over and it says I have an hour to go. This makes no since and the dialogue is so out of place. It is recordered with over use of surround sound passsing surreal and coming off corny. Reminds me of listening to 3D audio books. So far the plot is non-existant, trying to stay awake to mark it off the list and never watch again.
I get that it has an allegorical meaning, a biblical one at that but why did it have to be so messy! The storylines went here and there and the ultimate chaos in the end got a little ridiculous and worrisome. Had some noble goals no doubt but failed to reach them.
Disgraceful and shameful how it interpreted the refugee crisis and connected to the christianity. Altough, it's not my kind of movie, I can't say it wasn't an experience.
Kristen Wiig's performance really surprised me because it was very odd and off putting.
This movie is about love.
About loving someone who doesn't love you back. Who keeps barging into your heart again and again. Callously taking whatever they want, with no respect to or for you.
About them scavenging through your heart. Taking piece by piece and leavng you with practically nothing.
And, yet, for those in love, they think they found a way to make them love you back.
But the love greedy don't.
It's about being taken for granted. And being taken from over and over until that love burns up into ashes. And the greedy for love would rip your heart out to ring out every last drop of your love from the ashes.
Sounds just like god doesn't it.
"You give, and you give, and you give. It's just never enough"
What a movie. It's so strange, unique and thought provoking, you can't help but love it. Jennifer Lawrence's performance was spectacular to say the least. Now I know why some people said that this movie isn't for everyone. I love how this movie described the humans, Mother Nature and God...
Mother: Mother Nature
Him: God
House: Probably Earth
Ed Harris: Adam
Michelle: Eve
Crystal: Forbidden Apple
"Mother!" is hands down one of the most frustrating films I have ever watched, but that's exactly what makes it a success. Aronofsky went all out in his attempt to push boundaries and make the audience feel uncomfortable, and it's safe to say that he achieved that in a surprisingly refreshing way. Unlike many horror films and thrillers that rely on overused tropes, "Mother!" takes a different approach, starting off as a black comedy before escalating into something truly painful to watch (if you care about your surroundings).
The use of voyeuristic camera angles and the dark, yellowish photography combine with the immersive sound design to create an unsettling experience that stays with you long after the credits roll. But "Mother!" isn't just a horror film - it's also a powerful allegory for the relationship between Mother Earth, God, and mankind. Aronofsky uses the Bible as a framework for his story, but adds his own unique twist by portraying the story as a home invasion. The figure of God is also presented as an artist, adding an extra layer of interpretation that transcends the biblical references on the surface.
Despite its many strengths, "Mother!" is not without its flaws. The religious allegory can sometimes feel heavy-handed, and the atrocious CGI can be distracting. However, these issues are minor compared to the film's overall impact.
Funny, Thrilling, Absurd. This film was fantastic on so many levels. The way that it was shot, with so many shots just on mother's face, we really could see everything from her perspective. Going into the movie knowing almost nothing this movie took my brain on so many twists and turns as I never knew where the movie was going until the end. Just simply how naturally the situation grew bigger and bigger is a big testament to director Darren Aronofsky to make that work.
WTF did I just watch?!
Absolutely brilliant! While the allegory and symbolism are a little obvious and on-the-nose, it's still quite a poignant film. Beautiful, graphic and intense. But when does Aronofsky disappoint really?
Amazing film. Excellent acting game, thoughtful story, the unexpected end of the movie.
I am Recommend to view it.
Damn! Ops, I did mean, God! "Motherpiece!"
I don't know where to begin with this film... I was looking forward to seeing it at the cinema, mainly because I wanted to go at the end of September and had to deceide between what was available. From what I had read I expected it to be an unnerving film with a mysterious ending. It delivered that in spades; as well as making me think. But at times mother! was pushy, absurd, unnecessary, and pointless.
I didn't expect a horror film like most viewers, so I wan't disappointed. But I also didn't expect unexplained allegory. Sometimes works of "art" need explanation or direction - mother! left me without any. The choas at the end can be explained away by many perspectives (as you may find in other comments here), but some of it certainly feels like it was added on for sheer effect. I enjoyed the cinematography and acting greatly (those get a 7-8/10) but the direction of the second half of the film is only deserving of 3/10.
She’s a Liberal twat no than thanks!
I love the poster for this one.
Not what I was expecting at all, was a little hard to follow but it made a lot more sense when I looked up the meaning of this movie. Which it honestly is a piece of art, definitely not if you want to regular horror movie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any movie like this. The story did stick for a while with me. Definitely recommend if you’re into more special type of movies. Lot of shocking scenes to me but that’s also what’s great about it. I’ll watch it again knowing the meaning behind the movie.
Man talk about a wild ride. It’s starts out a little slow, but don’t worry, once it gets going, it picks up more and more, until you realize your on a roller coaster of insanity.
Very confusing at first but when I immersed myself more, I started to understand what the mother experiences. The representation of the mother's experience is beyond the usual like it is not as typical as what we see in other dramas that's why it was hard to understand. It really uses more of symbolisms than straight out lay things to the audience. It really is a mystery :sob:
I have never wanted a character to die as much as I wanted Javier Bardem's character to FREAKING DIE.
yeah, yeah, good movie and all that. just don't.
please don't.
hell no.
One of those movies that deserve a second watch after understanding the meaning behind.
The movie is really visceral and got me uncomfortable on many moments as I was trying to understand everything that was happening but once I did understand every single scene was making a lot more sense. Very original and a really good example on how to make a movie based on a metaphor.
My only critic is that it feels a bit longer than what it needed to be, nothing that ruins the experience thought.
I think I injured my jaw from opening it too wide and too long because WTF DID I JUST WATCH. That last hour was… Whew. I don’t even have a word for it.
It was quite a ride. If you enjoy horror films and making sense of symbolism and allegory, give this a watch. Be wary of spoilers in reviews.
This movie fucked me up
This one works only on the allegorical level. Because what you see is nuts and makes no sense.
Loved the first half, hated the second half.
Visually very well made, anxiety inducing. Had to google the explanation though and the whole metaphor was absolutely lost on me while watching. The fact that the creator himself says it's all up to interpretation and it's not really set in stone while also having the movie seemingly be extremely specific at points, certainly doesn't help in this regard.
Having read what they were going for, I can see what they were going for. It's an interesting movie, creative. "It's different" is how I feel about it in the end.
The movie was difficult to watch for me. Even, after understanding the allegory behind it, it was still dragging and weird, although making more sense.
The concept behind it, is great, but it has some basic problems. As a viewer, firstly, you get the wrong expectation for the movie. The initial tone doesn't set up the movie - leading to many passages that feel jarring. It was hard to keep the suspension of disbelief when Arronofsky switches between real-time and time dilution in the same shot. Many times, it felt like Arronofsky trying to be Charlie Kaufman. The rules of the movie weren't set up.
Although, it is part of the movie, the guests were horrible. No one would ever behave that way. Yes, of course, if they represent the people on earth, you can view it as truth. But why do they sometimes behave like normal guests and sometimes behave like idiots - constantly changing. Arronofsky uses his allegory and symbolism as an excuse to take the plot and characters to everywhere where he wants - but this is not how it works. It's not an organic process. He is just constantly bending the rules as he seems fit playing God in his own movie without thinking about audience expectation and respect. But I guess that's what he wanted anyway since it is a very pessimistic movie with heavy moralizing - so it is more acceptable if it would happen in another movie.
Streamed via Hulu (FXM)
Don't know how to rate this because I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's a really strange experience that you won't get in traditional horror films. Confusing and overly pretentious with a lot of hidden biblical references and layer but also really enjoyable. Fantastic performances from the cast, Lawrence was magnificent! Love the anxiety-inducing feel throughout with decent visual effects. This is one of those films that you'll appreciate more upon rewatch, but it's 2-hour long so I won't be rewatching this anytime soon.
Nuts.
'mother!' is an enjoyable watch, even if I didn't fully understand what was happening - I had a rough guess in my head throughout, but I was off given what I've read elsewhere online since. I'm fine with that though, I felt entertained which is all that truly matters.
Jennifer Lawrence is great, as is Javier Bardem. Those two are very much the stars of the film, though you also have Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in noteworthy roles. Excellent casting for all four. The film, meanwhile, looks superb, from the effects to the cinematography.
It's quite unsettling and wild to watch it all unfold, in a positive way though. One of the weirdest watched no doubt, and I've seen 'Rubber' (2010)...
Darren Aronofsky wrote 3 amazing films that I absolutely love dearly--Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and The Fountain. Then... he did Noah (or more appropriately, The Fellowship of the Ark). At that point, I figured he had run out of ideas so I went into Mother! (don't ever forget that exclamation point!) with some trepidation. It was definitely not Noah bad, but it did still pale in comparison to his other works. It was a bit... too on the nose with its symbolism. The actors all felt like they were overacting, which I'm sure was a stylistic choice, and the lack of subtlety rubbed me a bit in the wrong way. That being said, I did like the message of God being the enemy of nature and a few of the other naturalist themes throughout. It was just a little too...off... for me to be REALLY into it. It's worth a watch, if you go in for art house films, but not necessarily essential viewing.
Simply brilliant, I just recommend everyone to watch this movie!

To be honest, I've started to love the film even more as time to go on. Not for everyone, but with each thought, the more brilliant it becomes.
I just created an IMDB account to specifically rate this as the worst movie I have ever seen. Literally 1 star. The movie went absolutely no where. If you really want to watch this movie, start 80% through it and you will be sorted. I can't believe these 2 brilliant actors actually went through and signed to do this movie knowing the script upfront. Don't waste your time.
I picked up Mother! because I had loved Darren Aronofsky's previous work, Requiem for a Dream. That movie was haunting and I guess even today, I can not dare to see that again. It has left some lasting impact on me. I thought Mother would be something similar. It mostly is.
Mother! is a story of... well that is not clear. There are a burnt house, house owners living a happy peaceful life. We do not know that the house burning happens before or after. Then a lot of guests come in. Slowly but steadily the whole thing reaches a fever pitch. There are no names, the whole thing feels like an indie experiment. It would be unfair of me to give a comment on what that movie is about from the story, for that is an experience.
The slow atmospheric built up is both claustrophobic and restless. The camera is very close to Jennifer Lawrence almost all the time and that gets to you. She has a very peculiar voice. When she shrieks, it feels like it is not fully open and muffled in some way. This gives her hysteria a smothered quality, which I guess works perfectly at least fo this film.
When I saw the trailer, I was impressed by the cast. Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michele Pfeifer surely feel too much for this project. Especially, Ed Harris, and Michele Pfeifer, their roles are supporting in nature, and there is nothing for them to really shine. Having said that, it is always a pleasure to see Ed Harris on screen.
The ending, if you are from a certain religion, is bound to feel very allegorical. but if you are someone like me who is not from that religion, some other meanings will be obvious to you and that would be a pleasure to experience.
Bottom line is that Darren Aronofsky continues to impress me. If he did that multiple crazed edits in the movie I mentioned earlier, in this one he did that with context and ability to keep you engaged.
Overall, surely recommended, if you are someone who likes to be a little challenged and does not find uncomfortable scenes.
From writer/director Darren Aronofsky comes Mother!, an incredibly confusing piece of artistic douchebaggery. It starts out as a psychological thriller about a couple living in a house in the country who are visited by a mysterious stranger, but then it quickly devolves into a heavy handed allegory about creation. And as an allegory, there’s not really a plot or developed characters; which makes the film extremely hard to follow and get a grasp on. Additionally, the pacing is so fast that the audience is left feeling disoriented much of the time. Mother! is a chaotic mess that’s just not worth the aggravation.
Watched this bc bdk said disturbing and weird. Too art house for me, like Tisch senior thesis but somehow got famous actors. Fine allegory , interesting ideas, fun surreal, then intense ending. Not too disturbing tho, just burned face and body (like Anakin) and pulling live heart from body (like Temple of Doom).
it's a master piece. One of the best movies I've ever seen. The most of the people hated it, but I think it's because they didn't get it, or it was too hard for them to watch. Best movie of the century. Thank you Aronofsky.
Una de las mejores peliculas que vi en mi vida.
I was in a fibro flare while watching this so I don't know if that added to the confusion of this or what but...WHAT?! I don't know! And that's the gist of my feelings of this movie. I just don't understand what's going on! Lol!
Very disappointing and tediously protracted sort of horry. Probably works for the younger generation, but when you’ve seen them all, this was just belaboured chaos containing mostly displaced human interactions. In trying hard to be all mysterious and disorienting, along with a dash of hard hitting bits, it just feels like seriously lazy story writing. There's a clever little twist at the very end, but it's a seriously long wait, it is only just worth it.
However, Khawlah's review (Oct 11, 2018) is an alternative review I also consider accurate, and can totally agree with! :-)
You have to watch it more than once to fully understand everything you see on this one.
WTF did I just watch?
Weird. I mean I think I get the overall idea behind the story and just how bad Humans really are.
Inquisitive film about a humanized house in the form of a woman and a poet. It is a curious renovation of the myth of the haunted house.
A few too many allegories mixed up and confusingly shoved into one package, but the last act makes it all worth it.
Two hours plus of impenetrable pretentious piffle. The writer/director has made a movie that does not entertain, inform nor relate to any persons normal experiences and actions. Call it "art" but it's certainly not entertaining. You can make what you like of the story such as it is but it is overlong and tedious and presumably trying to tell us something. But what?
Amazing!
That's all I can say. Maybe i'll say a bit more ...
At face value the story is about a loving couple where the wife loves and supports the husband but the husband uses her strength to follow his own path.
However the allegory behind this movie is the Christian religion. There is God, Adam, Eve, Cain, Able, Jesus, the Bible, pagans and believers. But this story is from the point of view of an unknown character, the mother (God is usually the Father) and how his decisions broke her and her love. I believe the Mother represents the destroyer (in Christianity this character is often attributed to temptation, the devil, sin and evil) as a character, she brought the great flood (although only for a short time) and will bring the Apocalypse.
There is a lot more I can write about this movie, which I probably will after a second viewing.
Yes, we are destroying Mother Earth, thank you for pointing that out so vividly, lol.
I think it was God. And what we are supposed to do for him.
I really wanted to like this movie. I thought the writing was really good through most of the movie but certain scenes went on way too long. Not sure how I felt about Jennifer Lawrence's performance either.
Very impressive movie! Watched it without knowing anything about it and without watching trailers. Don't see trailers for this one!

A really disturbing, mind blowing and emotional piece. Now I regret not having seen this in the cinema.

Mother! was a moving experience. I think if you go in with an open mind you won’t be disappointed. If you’re looking for a standard horror film then see something else. If you want to see something original, Mother! is one of the best I’ve seen this year.
