Really good look at what led to the GFC and why it could happen again given the lack on change in the industry. For those that are not familiar with the financial sector / trading, watching this and also a movie like 'The Big Short' will truly open your eyes the fraud that has been committed.
as I'm watching this film, even now in 2023, when we are on a brink of another complete collapse, all these people that were blatantly lying in front of a camera. Same people, same institutions, same companies, still exist and were NEVER held accountable for what they did. They should've been rotten in jail by now, while all their money should have been given to all the people that have lost everything because of their greediness.
unfortunately it's gonna happen again and it's gonna be even more disastrous.
This film won Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2011, and tries to reveal how the global financial crisis during 2007-2008 happened . To be honest, I am not familiar with economics and this problem is really difficult for me. However, I was quite interested in this because of its relation with politics since I studied political science a bit. Nowadays, the financial industry has a deep connection with the political world. Besides it, it gets on well with some significant rating firms. Moreover, they also tries to involve even academia. As a result, 1% can earn enormous money in spite of the cost of the vast majority. Because of the system, no one can stop this situation. This happens not only in USA but in many countries. Wow. Holy cow. lol
I watched this one a couple of times when I was college, it's pretty useful for any econ student. It's certainly more informative and useful than The Big Short, that's for sure. However, you can feel there's this awkward tension between the informative documentary on the one hand and the angry hit piece towards the power of Wall Street on the other. The latter might be more artistically interesting, but it's not hard to pick up on instances where the editing is manipulative or falls short (cutting away before people provide a proper answer; the constant '... refused to answer' title cards; cheap shots towards Wall Street culture). If I wanted to see a film about the infamous use of cocaine and strippers, I'd much rather watch The Wolf of Wallstreet. On top of that, the presentation is noticeably weak. Visually it's one of the most uninspired documentaries I've seen, the narration is constantly holding your hand as a viewer (which I understand when it comes to the more technical stuff, but it gets a little ridiculous) and the use of the score feels cheap and obvious. It clearly wants to shock you, but because it tries too hard the achieved effect feels like less than what it could've been.
4.5/10
" No bad deed goes unpunished " excpet modern financial crimes!! A true horror movie
it would be a 10 if matt damon is not the narrator
Great doc. Easy to understand. Should watch
Love Denzel! One of the best movies that I have seen. Didn't see that ending coming.
A must watch. Helps make sense of 2007.
Another Michael Moore documentary... It tells "a story" in a very judgmental way. Many of the interviews are clipped in such a way, that it only tells the story from one view. I don't think that people really need anybody to judge the financial sector for them, the makers of this movie should rather have focused on presenting the facts.
This is a Must watch movie for everyone
Is this Documentary anything like Micheal Moore documentaries that speaks more to American audience than the rest of the world? Don't get me wrong, i always like to see whats wrong with "the greatest nation in the world" however America is not the only country to blame for the financial crisis. I hope they show that other countries made a mess of things too.
Everyone should watch this movie
