This is easily one of the most obnoxious and worst movies of 2015. The only reason I watched this is because I was interested in seeing Juliette Binoche speaking english. BIG MISTAKE!
Juliette Binoche's performance is one of few good parts of this movie. Unfortunately, Kristen Stewart was an extremely prominent role in this movie. I went into this movie with an open mind hoping she might at least put in a good performance. NOPE. I did believe a sigle word she said. There was no point for me to completely believe in her performance whatsoever. STOP MUMBLING EVER SINGLE SCENE! It wasn't even done for the sake of comedy there was zero self-awareness.
Chloë is also in the movie. Not that much, but she's a very important character. And the character she plays is supposed to be a bratty mix between Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus. And the interviews to show how crazy the character is has laugh tracks that were edited in horribly. The ques were so unnatural and they would react to things before they would even happen.
They then did a spoof of superhero films to kind of parody the genre and what I saw was SO embarrassing. All they did was paint the background white and dye the characters hair funny colors. What we are shown on screen is what some bad film student with 900 dollars could make. Yet, the main characters go to see this movie in theatres, and it's played off as some typical hollywood movie that would be generally well-received with 3-D glasses. And not like a terrible movie. It's like this director has no perception of reality.
There are other scenes where they talk about action movies and say "It's such an inferior genre". Well, if it's inferior and you suck at it, what does that make you? I have my own gripes and criticisms with superhero films, but you're seriously pretending that you pretentious movie isn't a million times worse? What are you criticising about that genre that can't be applied to your movie?
Your plot is contrived and non-sensical. The majority of the acting sucks. And, you're no where near skilled enough to imitate the genre you say is terrible. You have basically made a movie where you are worse than terrible. Also, The editing absolutely sucked.
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE!!
I'm so confused. Can't stop thinking about this film. Thoughtful, nice script, great actresses. Nice to see these complicated female characters unfold. Still confused about the ending and some editing choices (which made the film seem quite "cheap")
A really good drama. I love the slow moving storyline and the acting by both Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart is a treat to watch. Also beautiful scenery and cinematography.
I can't remember what brought me to this movie, but I wasn't expecting that much from it as I've never thought much of Kirsten Stewart as an actor - even in movies where she's praised for her acting. But this one, she pulls through brilliantly. This has got to be the first movie where I've actually been able to feel anything from her character. And I related and felt the character from start to finish.
It's a great story and movie, with some really powerful moments. Juliette Binoche is magnificent.
I wanted to check this out after enjoying Assayas' 'Personal Shopper' so much. 'Sils Maria' doesn't deliver as much as that film, but it does have some very fine moments. Juliette Binoche (Maria) and Kristen Stewart (Valentine) are both brilliant, as is the beauty of the Swiss alps.
The film dissects Binoche's character and how she copes with age and lost love. This theme is put in place by her acting out a play within the movie. The problem with this concept is that it does rather throw the whole point of the movie in your face all the time. The script was therefore returning to the movie's concept time and time again, which, as well as being the whole point, did get a little tiresome at points. That said, I did like how Stewart's character was almost like a figment of Maria's imagination at times, and the scripts they were reading blurred the edges of reality and fiction, which was fun to try and work out.
A beautiful, but slightly flawed film. 7.2/10
This was a nice little character study that started to fade towards the end of the film.
I don't really get the reason why this movie is so well rated by some people I know (besides Juliette Binoche's performance).
